The Impact Of A Literacy Program On Summer Reading Setback: Providing Access To Books And Project-Based Learning, Tiffany Gayle Robles

Theses and Dissertations

This action research study examined the impact of a summer literacy program on summer reading setback. Gaining Ground is a summer intervention program designed primarily for economically disadvantaged students in Grades K–5. By granting access to self-selected books and implementing project-based curriculum, Gaining Ground aims to improve reading proficiency during the summer break. Faucet theory illuminated the challenge of reaching and maintaining proficiency over break, and constructivism and self-determination theory framed the program’s efforts to resolve this problem.

As the curriculum director, I used mixed methods to assess Gaining Ground’s impact. Quantitative methods revealed maintenance, improvement, or decline in student …

The Thai Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences

In Thailand, Tetragonula pagdeni (TP) Schwarz is one of the most common and abundantly cultured stingless bee species in mangosteen orchards. The propolis extract of TP has been used as a traditional medicine to treat inflammation. TP propolis extract also exhibited antioxidant, antiproliferative, and antimicrobial properties in scientific reports. However, the anti-inflammatory effect of TP propolis extract has been limited. Thus, this study aims to evaluate the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of TP propolis extract through alteration of mRNA expression of genes involved in inflammatory processes, including cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), and cytokines (e.g., tumor necrosis factor-α …

Cultural Orientations Of Northerners And Southerners, Evert Van De Vliert Jul 2023

Cultural Orientations Of Northerners And Southerners, Evert Van De Vliert

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

A growing group of psychologists recognizes that many collective mindsets and practices are functionally linked to natural habitats, which predominantly differ from north to south. Notably, cultural collectivism, power distance and aggression increase from the South Pole toward the Equator but decrease from the Equator toward the North Pole; conversely, cultural creativity, gender equality and life satisfaction decrease from the South Pole toward the Equator but increase from the Equator toward the North Pole. None of these cultural orientations varies considerably in east-west direction. Both theoretically and empirically, the most plausible explanation is that societies at higher latitudes adopt greater …

The Impact Of Covid-19 On Psychosocial Services And Perceived Supports For Pediatric Patients, Samantha Martinez Jul 2023

The Impact Of Covid-19 On Psychosocial Services And Perceived Supports For Pediatric Patients, Samantha Martinez

Theses and Dissertations

In March 2020, the World Health Organization named severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) a global pandemic. While the physiological damage of COVID-19 on individuals and communities is itself immeasurable, both because variants continue to spread and because of the unpredictable nature of “long COVID,” we know even less about the long-term psychological impacts on individuals. Lockdown procedures, including school closures, were necessary to prevent transmission of the virus and to protect the most vulnerable bodies (namely, the elderly and immuno-compromised). However, the effect of the closures disproportionately resulted in psychological damage to children and adolescents. Previous studies have …

Babe (Body Appreciation And Better Eating), Just Add A Dash Of Self-Compassion: A Randomized Controlled Pilot Study For Black/African American Teenage Girls, Nkechi Bianca Okpara Jul 2023

Babe (Body Appreciation And Better Eating), Just Add A Dash Of Self-Compassion: A Randomized Controlled Pilot Study For Black/African American Teenage Girls, Nkechi Bianca Okpara

Theses and Dissertations

Introduction

Body dissatisfaction contributes to disproportionately high rates of disordered eating behaviors observed in Black teenagers. Given that self-compassion is found to buffer against eating pathology and body dissatisfaction and is linked to reduced incidences of binge eating and disordered eating behavior. Incorporating the self-compassion construct, specifically centering on nutrition, with a program that combats negative body image, like the Body Project, may further help decrease body dissatisfaction and improve overall nutrition.

Purpose

The aim of this dissertation was to test (1) the acceptability and feasibility of a novel program, Body Appreciation and Better Eating, add self-compassion (BABE+SC), and to …

Src Stimulates Abl-Dependent Phosphorylation Of The Guanine Exchange Factor Net1a To Promote Its Cytosolic Localization And Cell Motility, Ashabari Sprenger, Heather S Carr, Arzu Ulu, Jeffrey A Frost Jul 2023

Src Stimulates Abl-Dependent Phosphorylation Of The Guanine Exchange Factor Net1a To Promote Its Cytosolic Localization And Cell Motility, Ashabari Sprenger, Heather S Carr, Arzu Ulu, Jeffrey A Frost

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The neuroepithelial cell transforming gene 1 (Net1) is a guanine nucleotide exchange factor for the small GTPase RhoA that promotes cancer cell motility and metastasis. Two isoforms of Net1 exist, Net1 and Net1A, both of which are sequestered in the nucleus in quiescent cells to prevent aberrant RhoA activation. Many cell motility stimuli drive cytosolic relocalization of Net1A, but mechanisms controlling this event are not fully understood. Here, we demonstrate that epithelial growth factor stimulates protein kinase Src- and Abl1-dependent phosphorylation of Net1A to promote its cytosolic localization. We show that Abl1 efficiently phosphorylates Net1A on Y373, and that phenylalanine …

Endoscopic Mucosal Resection: Tips And Tricks For Gastrointestinal Trainees, Tessa Herman, Bryant Megna, Kumar Pallav, Mohammad Bilal

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) is a minimally invasive, specialized endoscopic technique that is useful in resecting superficial gastrointestinal lesions that are unable to be removed by standard polypectomy. This is typically accomplished using a submucosal injection that lifts the lesion away from the muscularis propria to allow for safe resection of the polyp, either via piecemeal or en bloc resection. Over the years, several techniques exist to perform EMR including conventional EMR or hot EMR, cold EMR and underwater EMR. Despite its established advantages and safety over conventional techniques such as surgery, the adoption of endoscopic resection (and thus the …

Leveraging Church Environments To Promote Rural Physical Activity And Healthy Eating, Kelsey Rothera Day Jul 2023

Leveraging Church Environments To Promote Rural Physical Activity And Healthy Eating, Kelsey Rothera Day

Theses and Dissertations

Rural residents experience a greater burden of chronic disease related to physical inactivity and poor diet than their urban counterparts. A promising strategy to improve these health behaviors in rural areas is to leverage existing structures that may support physical activity and healthy eating, such as churches, in public health interventions. Three studies were conducted as part of this dissertation. They were designed to: 1) examine whether the walkability and healthy food density of neighborhoods surrounding rural and urban churches are associated with race, socioeconomic status, and rural/urban status; 2) examine rural church leaders’ views on the role of faith-based …
