Examining The Impact Of Covid-19 On Elementary-Aged Minoritized Students, Ashlynn Ramirez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
The Coronavirus Disease [COVID-19] pandemic was a public health crisis. As of January 2022, there were over 314 million infections and over 5.5 million deaths (Assefa et al., 2022). Unfortunately, COVID-19 disproportionately impacted minoritized populations. This study will investigate the relationship between COVID-19 and the impact on minoritized students attending Title I elementary schools in one urban school district. According to Lopez-Ibor (2006), "disasters are diverse events as a consequence of a danger that affects social groups and produces material and human losses resulting in insufficient resources of the community and insufficient coping through social mechanisms" (p. 22). COVID-19 affected …

Learning Gains Post Covid-19 Disruption: The Predictive Value Of Sense Of Belonging, Teacher Efficacy, And School Fit, Deborah Izzo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
The study explores predictive associations between student perceptions of a sense of belonging, teacher perceptions of teaching efficacy, family perceptions of school fit, and academic growth within a post-COVID-19 shutdown landscape. Learning loss due to the COVID-19 pandemic instructional disruption can have long-lasting impacts, necessitating instructional interventions that aim to close learning gaps and increase learning gains (UNESCO, 2020). Drawing from 5 global datasets, the World Bank simulation conducted in 2021 projected a COVID-19 school closure learning loss range of .3 to 1.1 years, the range attributed to 4 possible scenarios with converse intervals of closure and effectiveness of mitigation …

Assessing The Barriers To Reintegration Among Returnees In Nigeria, Itunu Ilesanmi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Reintegration for internally displaced returnees in Nigeria needs improvement due to the barrier returnees encounter when returning to their communities of origin. As a path to recovery following the unsettling experiences of generalized violence caused by Boko Haram terrorist attacks in Northeastern Nigeria, there is a need for best practices to mitigate challenges during reintegration for internally displaced returnees. With an estimated 2.5 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Northeastern Nigeria at the end of 2022, 1.98 million have returned to their prior residence, where they must cope and survive while attempting to reintegrate without effective and efficient support to …
How Plants Cope With Stress, Nabila Riaz
How Plants Cope With Stress, Nabila Riaz
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Iron (Fe) is one of the essential micronutrients required by both plants and animals. In humans, Fe deficiency causes anemia, the most prevalent nutritional disorder in the world today. Most people rely on plant-based foods as their major Fe source, but plants are a poor source of dietary Fe.
Fe deficiency has many adverse effects on photosynthesis, which is not surprising given that 95% of foliar Fe is found in chloroplast. The Gueirnot lab had previously showed that the bHLH transcription factors ILR3 and PYE are required for photoprotection during Fe deficiency by preventing ROS damage to photosystem II (PSII). …

The advances in cancer research achieved in the last 50 years have been remarkable and have provided a deeper knowledge of this disease in many of its conceptual and biochemical aspects. From viewing a tumor as a 'simple' aggregate of mutant cells and focusing on detecting key cell changes leading to the tumorigenesis, the understanding of cancer has broadened to consider it as a complex organ interacting with its close and far surroundings through tumor and non-tumor cells, metabolic mechanisms, and immune processes. Metabolism and the immune system have been linked to tumorigenesis and malignancy progression along with cancer-specific genetic …

Protein–energy malnutrition (PEM), which leads to a reduced ability of tissues to regenerate and repair themselves, may exacerbate many chronic diseases, including atrial fibrillation (AF), which occurs as a response of the heart to chronic inflammation. However, population-based studies examining the association between PEM and the prevalence and health care burden of AF are lacking. The aim of this retrospective cohort study was to estimate the impact of PEM on the prevalence and clinical outcomes of hospitalization for AF. The National Inpatient Sample (NIS) 2016 and 2017 datasets were searched for data on hospitalized adult patients with AF as a …
Biofilm Detachment As A Passive Method To Survive Bacterial Predation, Alice Wren Goldstein-Plesser
Biofilm Detachment As A Passive Method To Survive Bacterial Predation, Alice Wren Goldstein-Plesser
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
Bacterial biofilms are held together by various, often species specific, secreted proteins, polysaccharides, and DNA – collectively termed the biofilm matrix. Although biofilms have many fitness advantages conferred to them, matrix mutants are abundant within natural isolates, implying context-dependent disadvantages inherent to the production of some matrix components. Here we explore how biofilm architecture controls a tradeoff in the context of different predation pressures. The model organism Escherichia coli is used as a prey species, due to its highly characterized protection against bacteriophages, and the motile bacterial predator Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus as the predatory exposure. We use microfluidics paired with confocal …

Potential Clean-Label Astringency Maskers For Acidic Whey Protein Beverages, Jozxelle Tongson Gao
Potential Clean-Label Astringency Maskers For Acidic Whey Protein Beverages, Jozxelle Tongson Gao
Theses and Dissertations
Whey Protein Ready-to-Drink (RTD) beverages are popular nutritional products due to their high protein content, complete amino acid profile, convenience, and flavor. However, astringency imparted by whey protein at low pH (pH <4.5) can significantly reduce consumer liking. Astringency is a complex problem, so it may require a multi-faceted solution. Samples were created through Response Surface Methodology (RSM), utilizing parameters determined through literature review and preliminary testing. There is evidence that sucrose may help to reduce astringency in wine. Various natural sweeteners like stevia, monk fruit extract, and sweet proteins: thaumatin and brazzein were evaluated to observe if they may reduce the astringency in acidic whey protein RTD beverages. Samples were assessed by trained quantitative descriptive analysis (QDA), consumer acceptance, and focus group panels. Formulas were instrumentally measured for pH, brix, zeta potential, and particle size. pH and brix were useful measures for monitoring processing consistency, but neither related to level of astringency of samples. Zeta potential instrumental data coincided with results of previous studies finding that a decrease in zeta potential within the range of pH 3-5 correlated with less astringency with whey protein isolates. Particle size relation to astringency is dependent on the zeta potential. A large particle size measurement does not lead to higher astringency if the molecules do not interact due to electrostatic repulsion. Analytical measurements of the samples were statistically compared for differences that may relate to less astringent beverages. The QDA panel determined the combination of 0.20% thaumatin and 0.22% stevia rebaudioside M to most reduce astringency, however this did not correlate with higher acceptability as its acceptability remained as a neither like nor dislike rating. Consumers evaluated thaumatin, brazzein, and monk fruit to be clean-label ingredients after learning about their natural sources and flavor functionalities. More research about thaumatin, monk fruit, and especially brazzein is needed to find the ideal usage levels in AWB formulation. Brazzein was least preferred according to the focus group panel, who felt it did not reduce astringency. Future research could evaluate whether a higher concentration would be more effective. These findings aim to help sensorially improve acidic whey protein beverage formulations and provide the dairy beverage industry insight on creating and marketing more clean-label products.

One of the central roles in the design, development, and application advances in mediator-Based microbial electrochemical systems, such as microbial fuel cells (MFCs), is the establishment of efficient and successful communication between conductive electrode surfaces and microorganisms via modes of extracellular electron transfer (EET). Most microbial-Based systems require the use of artificial electroactive mediators in order to facilitate and/or enhance electron transfer. Our previous work established an exogenous phenazine-Based library as a mediator system to enable EET from the model microorganism Escherichia coli as a promising biotechnological host. However, the addition of exogenous mediators to a microbial electrochemical system has …

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Eukaryotic cells are building blocks to complex living systems, characterized by membrane-bound organelles. Studying how eukaryotic organelles react to cellular growth and size increase is crucial, but it demands biochemical and biophysical manipulations, as well as quantitative observation tools in microscopy. We developed a multi-color yeast strain with tagged fluorescent proteins, enabling systematic measurements of 6 organelles inside each cell using spectral confocal microscopy. These measurements provided insights into how organelle biogenesis is coordinated with cellular size and growth rate regulation via different signaling pathways. To explore cellular growth under dynamic conditions, I utilized deep learning for organelle recognition using …

Exploring The Role Of Salt-Tolerant Halomonas Inoculant In Altering Plant Gene Expression To Improve Salt Tolerance In Alfalfa., Ashley Kay Miller
Theses and Dissertations
Soil salinity is an increasing problem facing agriculture in many parts of the world. Climate change and irrigation practices have led to decreased yields of large areas of farmland due to increased salt levels in the soil. Irrigation introduces salts to the soil that with time accumulate and threaten crop yield. In arid climates like Utah, the practice of irrigation is especially threatening to salt-sensitive crops including alfalfa (Medicago sativa). Plants that have tolerance to salt are needed to feed livestock and the world's population. One approach to address this problem is to introduce genes encoding salt tolerance into the …
