Multi-Level Barriers And Opportunities For Nutrition Access In New Hampshire Hispanic Communities, Brooke Kelleher
Multi-Level Barriers And Opportunities For Nutrition Access In New Hampshire Hispanic Communities, Brooke Kelleher
Master's Theses and Capstones
The US Hispanic population, which has doubled in size in New Hampshire (NH) over the last decade, experiences a high prevalence of cardiometabolic disease and food insecurity. Fiber intake, which can be protective against cardiometabolic disease, decreases in Hispanics after a period of living in US food environments. Multi-level approaches have been effective at addressing diet quality and cardiometabolic disease in vulnerable populations and are warranted in NH Hispanic communities. Using the Socioecological Model (SEM), this thesis examined the influences of the individual, setting, sector, and social/cultural SEM levels on access to nutritious foods in Hispanic/Latino communities in NH. Additionally, …
Movement Patterns, Habitat Use, And Survival Of Anadromous Rainbow Smelt In Great Bay Estuary, Nh, Chloe Pearson
Movement Patterns, Habitat Use, And Survival Of Anadromous Rainbow Smelt In Great Bay Estuary, Nh, Chloe Pearson
Master's Theses and Capstones
Anadromous rainbow smelt in the northeastern USA have experienced range contraction over the past few decades, and are now restricted to waters in Massachusetts and northwards. In their current range, populations appear to be in decline, including in New Hampshire; in Great Bay, New Hampshire, conservation methods such as habitat restoration and stocking efforts have been suggested to improve populations, with projects underway to implement these methods. To optimize these conservation efforts, specific knowledge regarding rainbow smelt habitat use in estuaries is needed, including the specific habitats used as well as timing and duration of use. In March 2021, we …

Evaluating Growth Patterns Of Beech Bark Disease Fungal Agents Neonectria Faginata And Neonectria Ditissima Under Different In Vitro Conditions, Santiago Rivera Reyes
Master's Theses and Capstones
The co –occurring fungal species Neonectria ditissima and Neonectria faginata are major canker-forming pathogens in the beech bark disease (BBD) systems which has caused restructuring of forests throughout northeastern North America. The role of nutrients in structuring microbial community interactions has been studied in BBD forests stands but has yet to be fully understood and examined under specific in-vitro conditions. This study aimed to investigate how nitrogen, phosphorus, and temperature levels influence the growth, reproduction, and competitive hierarchies between N. ditissima and N. faginata. We performed in-vitro assays where species were first individually and then jointly grown under different concentrations …
Mechanistic Models Of Human Decision-Making And Ecological Dynamics In Small-Scale Fisheries, Sophie Wulfing
Mechanistic Models Of Human Decision-Making And Ecological Dynamics In Small-Scale Fisheries, Sophie Wulfing
Master's Theses and Capstones
Small-scale fisheries are essential to the livelihoods of 40 million people worldwide. They are key sources of nutrients and income for these communities that rely on them. However, understanding the status of these fisheries requires in-depth data collection, often in remote areas. Further, each small-scale fishery is very individualized, and external groups attempting to impose fishing restrictions are often met with low compliance or are unsuccessful in their efforts to conserve fish stocks due to a lack of understanding of either fishing culture or the ecology of the harvested species. In this thesis, I employ various mechanistic models to small-scale …

Biomedical Sciences Faculty Publications
Mechanisms linking intestinal bacteria and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD) are still unclear. We hypothesized that intestinal dysbiosis might potentiate AD, and manipulating the microbiome to promote intestinal eubiosis and immune homeostasis may improve AD-related brain changes. This study assessed sex differences in the effects of oral probiotic, antibiotics, and synbiotic treatments in the AppNL-G-F mouse model of AD. The fecal microbiome demonstrated significant correlations between bacterial genera in AppNL-G-F mice and Aβ plaque load, gliosis, and memory performance. Female and not male AppNL-G-F mice fed probiotic but not synbiotic exhibited a decrease in Aβ plaques, microgliosis, brain …

The symptoms of food allergies vary significantly between individuals, likely due to genetic determinants. In humans, allergy development is initiated by antigen-presenting cells via class II human leukocyte antigen (HLA-II). The HLA-II gene is highly polymorphic, and its allelic variance is thought to influence the susceptibility of individuals to a particular allergen. However, whether antigen presentation by different HLA-II variants contributes to symptom variation is not clear. We hypothesized that HLA-II allelic variance affects symptom phenotypes, including immediate physical reactions and delayed behavioral changes, in individuals with food hypersensitivity. To test our hypothesis, male and female mice of three transgenic …
Sleep, Body Dissatisfaction, And Eating Among Adolescents, Megan White
Sleep, Body Dissatisfaction, And Eating Among Adolescents, Megan White
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Sleep difficulties in adolescence have been linked to greater impulsivity, negative affect, propensity to interpret neutral stimuli as negative, and higher rates of anxiety and depressive symptomatology (Van Dyk, 2016). However, minimal research has looked at the relationship among sleep difficulties, emotional eating, and body dissatisfaction within this population. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to explore the relationship among sleep difficulties, emotional eating, and body dissatisfaction among adolescents aged 12-18 years. Specifically, the current study stands to 1) confirm the relationship between emotional eating and body dissatisfaction; 2) test if sleep difficulties are related to emotional eating; …
Replacing Ground Corn With Liquid Molasses In Diets Of Jersey Cows Fed Red Clover Baleage: Effects On Milk Production, Nitrogen Efficiency, Energy Utilization, And Enteric Methane Emissions, Adam Lee Konopka
Master's Theses and Capstones
Molasses is a food byproduct rich in sucrose commonly added to the diets of cattle which has been reported to enhance milk production, promote rumen microbial growth, and increase digestibility of nutrients. Variable results obtained when partially replacing starch sources with molasses have led to an increased interest in the dietary conditions under which molasses could optimize the production of dairy cows. We aimed to investigate the effect of partially replacing ground corn with sugarcane liquid molasses on dry matter intake, milk yield and composition, enteric methane emissions, and N utilization in lactating Jersey cows fed red clover baleage. Eighteen …

Rights And Remedies: Rental Housing For Low-Income Households In The United States, David Ray Papke, Mary Elise Papke
Rights And Remedies: Rental Housing For Low-Income Households In The United States, David Ray Papke, Mary Elise Papke
Marquette Benefits and Social Welfare Law Review
The state of rental housing for low-income households in the United States is deplorable. Unaffordable, unsanitary, and insecure, this housing violates the internationally recognized right of housing. While the United States has never formally recognized that right, the right guarantees not only a roof overhead but also affordability, habitability, and security of tenure. Policies and programs seeking to remedy the problems in rental housing might consciously address these aspects of rental housing. Policies and programs of this sort will not be enough to eliminate all problems, but they would alleviate a matter of great embarrassment, namely, the most affluent country …

The futures of human and nonhuman primates are closely tied in protected areas. Understanding this interconnectedness is especially urgent in Madagascar, one of the world’s most impoverished biodiversity hotspots. Yet, no study has evaluated the relationship between poverty and lemur hunting and consumption using a composite poverty metric that includes health, education, and living standards. To address this gap, and to inform primate conservation practice and policy, we administered annual surveys to 81 households over six consecutive months (September 2018 to March 2019) in a village on the border of Kirindy Mitea National Park, Madagascar. We observed extreme deprivation scores …

Antibiotic-Induced Gut Dysbiosis And Cognitive, Emotional, And Behavioral Changes In Rodents: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Shivdeep S. Hayer, Soonjo Hwang, Jonathan B. Clayton
Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications
There are previous epidemiological studies reporting associations between antibiotic use and psychiatric symptoms. Antibiotic-induced gut dysbiosis and alteration of microbiota-gut-brain axis communication has been proposed to play a role in this association. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we reviewed published articles that have presented results on changes in cognition, emotion, and behavior in rodents (rats and mice) after antibiotic-induced gut dysbiosis. We searched three databases—PubMed, Web of Science, and SCOPUS to identify such articles using dedicated search strings and extracted data from 48 articles. Increase in anxiety and depression-like behavior was reported in 32.7 and 40.7 percent of the …
The Dangers Of Staphylococcus Aureus And Antimicrobial Resistance, Madison Pines
The Dangers Of Staphylococcus Aureus And Antimicrobial Resistance, Madison Pines
Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is the etiological agent responsible for many problematic infections. The signs and symptoms of an infection caused by MRSA differ based on the route of transmission and type of infection. Staphylococcus aureus can secrete toxins that act as virulence factors and aid host invasion. Obesity, old age, being a health care worker, playing contact sports, living in a crowded place, hospitalization, recent antibiotic use, and HIV patients are more at risk of developing an infection caused by MRSA. An abundance of factors has contributed to antimicrobial resistance, like misuse of antibiotics in clinical and agricultural settings …
Trauma Mediating The Severity Of Depressive Symptoms In Veterans With Ptsd, Meghan Curtin
Trauma Mediating The Severity Of Depressive Symptoms In Veterans With Ptsd, Meghan Curtin
Dissertations
Trauma serves as a risk factor for developing both posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. The purpose of this study was to examine trauma type as a mediator in the relationship between gender and severity of depressive symptoms among veterans with PTSD. The literature shows trauma type plays a role in developing PTSD and depressive symptoms. The first hypothesis was that female veterans who met the diagnostic criteria for PTSD would report higher levels of depressive symptoms than their male counterparts. The second hypothesis was that this gender difference would be partly mediated by levels of interpersonal trauma experience. Self-report …

Interleukin-10 In Cancer Immunotherapy: From Bench To Bedside, Mohamad Adham Salkeni, Aung Naing
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Interleukin (IL)-10 was one of the first cytokines to be recognized. However, its functionality in promoting antitumor immunity was described more recently. Context- and concentration-dependent biological effects are the hallmarks of the pleiotropic role of IL-10. Despite reducing tumor-promoting inflammation, IL-10 may have a role in rejuvenating exhausted tumor-resident T cells. Contrary to the assumption that IL-10 produces an immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME), it promotes activation of tumor-resident CD8+ T cells, which aids tumor rejection. Emerging data from published early-Phase trials have shown mixed results in different tumor types. In this review, we summarize the biological effects of IL-10 and …

Supervisory Impact On Counselor-In-Training Wellness, Erin Brumfield Grima
Dissertations
Counselors being able to engage in self-care practices to establish and maintain their wellness is a well-documented need. The risks of neglecting self-care are also well documented, yet counselors struggle to engage in consistent self-care practices (Baker & Gabriel, 2021; Posluns & Gall, 2020). When demand for counselors is constant (Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor, 2020) an examination of how to impact counselor wellness through supervision discussion of self-care is needed. The purpose of the study was to examine supervision discussion of self-care, support of mastery of counselors-in-training’s emotions and any resulting impact on counselor wellness. Data …

Objective: To summarize absorbance and impedance angles from normal-hearing ears within the 2015–2016 and 2017–2020 US National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES).
Design: Two publicly available NHANES datasets were analyzed. Ears meeting criteria for normal hearing and valid absorbance and impedance angle measurements were identified. Measurements were summarized via descriptive statistics within categories of age cohort, race/ethnicity cohort, sex (male, female), and ear (left, right).
Results: A total of 7029 ears from 4150 subjects, ages 6 to 80 years, met inclusion criteria. Differences between subgroups within all categories (age, race/ethnicity, sex, and ear) were fractions of the sample SDs. …
