Countries worldwide are experiencing shifts in their population structures. Aging has a significant impact on healthcare and elderly care provision. COVID-19 indirectly promoted the development of telemedicine and smart healthcare industries. Numerous intelligent software has been designed to enable elderly individuals to live independently. However, elderly individuals face physical challenges when using advanced technological products. Therefore, paying attention to their needs and user experiences during the design and development stages is essential. In this study, we designed and developed a game-based rehabilitation app (Formosa Explore). We integrated the concept of gamified rehabilitation into the lives of community-dwelling elderly individuals and …

Mild Cognitive impairment (MCI) is the stage between healthy cognitive functioning and Dementia, in which individuals still live independently at home but develop difficulties related to memory, executive functioning, and decision-making. MCI is mainly managed with therapeutic activities such as physical exercise, cognitive training, nutrition, and occupational therapies. While individuals living with MCI tend to isolate themselves, social interactions are known for their potential to slow or interrupt cognitive decline, being an important therapeutic component for MCI. Previous studies show how the built environment affects social interactions for Dementia patients living in residential care facilities, specifically through the layout of …

Convergence Research And Participatory Design Of A Study Furniture System For Small Living Environments, Tulio Maximo, Chi Hang Paul Lo, Wen Zhan
IASDR Conference Series
With limited space, lack of natural lighting and restrictive internal layout, children living in subdivided units and other similar small living spaces are often left with no choice but to study, play and sleep on the bed for a prolonged period. Such environmental conditions often damage children’s development, particularly their eyesight, muscles, and bones, and harm their concentration, self-worth, and, thus, academic attainment. Early interventions are of the utmost urgency. This project adopted continued convergence research collaboration and participatory design to understand critical issues and develop and test interventions to improve the studying environment of children living in subdivided units …
Domestic Infrastructure Of Food: Thoughts On Community Engagement Through Food, Furniture, And Architectural Exhibition, Leyuan Li
IASDR Conference Series
Over the past decades, the attention towards fresh food ingredients has promoted the emergence of growing vegetables in domestic spaces and sharing homemade ingredients with neighbors. The introduction of producing and exchanging food in domestic territories not only creates new forms of recreation, but also foregrounds inhabitants' anxieties concerning food security and community engagement, especially amidst global unrest during the pandemic. Within this imperative context, the pictorial essay intends to introduce food as a collective medium and a social act. By showing a series of representations and photographs of an installation project, the essay speculates on the performative and spatial …

Women’S Empowerment As A Determinant Of Child’S Nutrition: Evidence From A Cambodia Demographic And Health Survey, Vatana Chea, Socheata Sar
Journal of Demography
Does the empowerment of women improve a child’s long-term health outcome? Although the relationship seems intuitive in daily life, most studies done globally have found no association. This paper explicates the relationship between women’s empowerment and children’s malnutrition by taking Cambodia as a case study and adding new empirical evidence to the debate. Data were drawn from the Cambodia Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) 2014, with a sample of 4,118 children nationwide. To measure children’s nutritional status, this study employed the WHO’s height-for-age (HFA) and weight-for-age (WFA) metrics, and at the same time, used the Survey-Based Women’s emPowERment Index (SWPER), …

Critical Questions
Article I, Section 7 of the Constitution of the United States reads, “All Bills for raising Revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives.” Article I, Section 8 continues to name the powers of Congress, most essentially, “to lay and collect taxes… to borrow Money… and to coin Money.” In the United States, the power of the purse resolutely rests in the legislature’s hands, but this power does not come without restraint. The final clause of Article I, Section 9 states, “No money shall be drawn from the Treasury, but in Consequence of Appropriations made by Law.” As such, Congress …

Unlike many other hematologic malignancies, Richter syndrome (RS), an aggressive B cell lymphoma originating from indolent chronic lymphocytic leukemia, is responsive to PD-1 blockade. To discover the determinants of response, we analyze single-cell transcriptome data generated from 17 bone marrow samples longitudinally collected from 6 patients with RS. Response is associated with intermediate exhausted CD8 effector/effector memory T cells marked by high expression of the transcription factor ZNF683, determined to be evolving from stem-like memory cells and divergent from terminally exhausted cells. This signature overlaps with that of tumor-infiltrating populations from anti-PD-1 responsive solid tumors. ZNF683 is found to directly …

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) in bovine milk confer beneficial physiologic effects to consumers. Industrial processing treatments may affect the amount or bioactivity of EVs intrinsic to bovine milk. We investigated how the content and concentration of EVs were affected by homogenization and thermal processing of raw bovine milk. Raw milk was processed by homogenization, low-temperature (LT) heat, or pasteurization [high-temperature short-time (HTST) and ultra-high-temperature (UHT)] in a pilot processing facility. EVs were isolated from the raw and processed bovine milk using differential ultracentrifugation and quantified using a nanoparticle tracking analyzer. Bovine milk EVs were assessed for total miRNA and protein concentrations …

Context or problem: A trade-off between seed protein concentration (SPC) and yield has been reported for soybean. Therefore, assessing management practices that can nullify this trade-off is relevant to avoid further declines in SPC in the future as yield continues to increase. While the positive effect of irrigation on yield is well documented, only a few studies have assessed the impact of irrigation on SPC, showing conflicting results.
Objective or research question: The objective was to determine if the trade-off between seed yield and SPC persists when irrigation is applied and how management, soil, and weather factors influence the trade-off. …

Enhancing Exploration-Exploitation In Harmony Search For Airborne Hyperspectral Imaging Band Selection (E3hs), Mohammed Abdulmajeed Moharram, Divya Meena Sundaram
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Hyperspectral imaging has emerged as a prominent area of research in the field of remote sensing science. However, hyperspectral images (HSIs) pose a notable challenge due to the presence of numerous irrelevant and redundant spectral bands exhibiting high correlation. Therefore, it is necessary to enhance the classification performance for HSI processing by selecting the most relevant discriminative spectral bands. To this end, this paper introduces a metaheuristic search method called enhancing exploration-exploitation in harmony search (E3HS). The standard harmony search suffers from many weaknesses, such as premature convergence and falling easily into the local optimum. Consequently, E3HS was proposed to …

Dissecting The Daily Feeding Pattern: Peripheral Clock/Cycle Generate The Feeding/Fasting Episodes And Neuronal Molecular Clocks Synchronize Them, Akiko Maruko, Koichi M Iijima, Kanae Ando
Department of Neuroscience Faculty Papers
A 24-h rhythm of feeding behavior, or synchronized feeding/fasting episodes during the day, is crucial for survival. Internal clocks and light input regulate rhythmic behaviors, but how they generate feeding rhythms is not fully understood. Here we aimed to dissect the molecular pathways that generate daily feeding patterns. By measuring the semidiurnal amount of food ingested by single flies, we demonstrate that the generation of feeding rhythms under light:dark conditions requires quasimodo (qsm) but not molecular clocks. Under constant darkness, rhythmic feeding patterns consist of two components: CLOCK (CLK) in digestive/metabolic tissues generating feeding/fasting episodes, and the …

Covid 19 pandemic sheds light on the entanglement of urban planning and public health in neoliberal urban contexts with special attention to justice. “Good health and wellbeing” is one of the sustainable development goals. This article argues that neoliberal urban practices result in a good Quality of Life for privileged populations, but negatively affect the vulnerable and lead to health injustice from the perspective of urban planning. Hence, Quality of Life is negatively affected since health is a crucial aspect within the discipline of Quality of Life. The spatial determinants of health-related Quality of Life are essential to be considered …
