The gut microbiome is a potentially important mechanism that links prenatal disaster exposures with increased disease risks. However, whether prenatal disaster exposures are associated with alterations in the infant's gut microbiome remains unknown. We established a birth cohort study named Hurricane as the Origin of Later Alterations in Microbiome (HOLA) after Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico in 2017. We enrolled vaginally born Latino term infants aged 2 to 6 months, including

Health Policy & Community Health: Faculty Publications
Background
Young children living in poor rural areas in Honduras are susceptible to suffering from undernutrition. About 1 in every 4 children under age 5 have stunting. Stunting during early childhood has negative consequences on an individual's life that can have short-term and lasting effects. This study's purpose was to explore the perceptions of the mothers of children that participate in a community-based nutrition-agriculture program that offers 1 egg daily to all children ages 6 to 24 months in 13 communities. Methods
Using community-engaged methods, we implemented a SWOT analysis to identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats using a semi-structured …
Molecular Mechanisms Underlying Host Immunity In The Drosophila-Parasitoid System And Its Application In A Course-Based Research Experience, Ashley Waring-Sparks
Molecular Mechanisms Underlying Host Immunity In The Drosophila-Parasitoid System And Its Application In A Course-Based Research Experience, Ashley Waring-Sparks
Theses and Dissertations
A functional immune response is essential for the survival of all living organisms. The fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster is a well-established model for studying host immunity as well as metabolic regulation during an immune response. Fruit fly larvae, in nature, are commonly infected by parasitoid wasps whose survival is dependent on the successful parasitization of their host. The immune response that the fly elicits toward the wasp egg is a primitive yet effective process. I characterized the genes induced by a host during infection, identified metabolites present in a host during infection, investigated the role of Ab in the cellular …

"Intervention" is central to global health, but the significance and effects of how intervention is practiced are often taken for granted. This review takes interventions into health and medicine as subjects for ethnographic inquiry. We highlight three lines of anthropological contributions: studies of global health interventions that serve imperial and military objectives, studies of "magic bullet" interventions arising from laboratory science, and studies of interventions based on deterministic modeling techniques. We then outline examples of "intervention otherwise," in which people build relations of solidarity and care through global health programming, design interventions to be interactive and adaptable, and use data …

For over a decade, beekeepers have experienced high losses of honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) colonies due to a variety of stressors including pesticide exposure. Some of these chemical stressors may residually remain in the colony comb and food resources (pollen and nectar) of failed colonies and be later re-used by beekeepers when splitting and building back new colonies. The practice of re-using comb from previously perished colonies (termed “deadout”) is common in beekeeping practice, but its role in affecting colony health is not well understood. Here, we evaluate the impact of reused, pesticide-contaminated “deadout” combs on colony function …

The direct relationship between facilitative glucose transporters (GLUTs) and metabolic diseases opens new avenues for sensing metabolic deregulations and drives the development of molecular probes for GLUT-targeted detection of metabolic diseases. Radiotracer-based molecular imaging probes have been effectively utilized in reporting alterations in sugar uptake as an indication of metabolic deregulations, cancer development, or inflammation. Progress in developing fluorophore-based tools facilitated GLUT-specific analyses using more accessible fluorescence-based instrumentation. However, restrictions on the emission range of fluorophores and the requirement for substantial post-treatments to reduce background fluorescence have brought to light the critical directions for improvement of the technology for broader …

Discussing causes in science, if we are to do so in a way that is sensible, begins at the root. All too often, we jump to discussing specific postulated causes but do not first consider what we mean by, for example, causes of obesity or how we discern whether something is a cause. In this paper, we address what we mean by a cause, discuss what might and might not constitute a reasonable causal model in the abstract, speculate about what the causal structure of obesity might be like overall and the types of things we should be looking …

Older people are at high risk of developing and dying from pulmonary infections like tuberculosis (TB), but there are few studies among them, particularly in Hispanics. To address these gaps, we sought to identify host factors associated with TB and adverse treatment outcomes in older Hispanics by conducting a cross-sectional study of TB surveillance data from Tamaulipas, Mexico (2006–2013; n = 8381). Multivariable logistic regressions were assessed for older adults (OA ≥65 years) when compared to young (YA, 18–39 years) and middle-aged adults (40–64 years). We found that the OA had features associated with a less complicated TB (e.g., lower …

In this paper, we present an optimal classifier for beef quality discrimination by a low-cost optical apparatus. Detecting beef spoilage in beef factories is a sophisticated process because beef spoilage is a mixture of physical and chemical changes. A low-cost Light-Dependent Resistor (LDR), and a light source were used to collect reflection spectra during the analysis of beef. The LabVIEW platform was programmed to acquire the obtained data from the microcontroller (Arduino) to predict beef quality. For the beef quality discrimination process, un-supervising machine learning called Principal Components Analysis (PCA) was used, and the score plot percentage was of the …
