BACKGROUND: Breast milk (BM) provides complete nutrition for infants for the first six months of life and is essential for the development of the newborn's immature immune and digestive systems. While BM was conventionally believed to be sterile, recent advanced high throughput technologies have unveiled the presence of diverse microbial communities in BM. These insights into the BM microbiota have mainly originated from uncomplicated pregnancies, possibly not reflecting the circumstances of mothers with pregnancy complications like preterm birth (PTB).
METHODS: In this article, we investigated the BM microbial communities in mothers with preterm deliveries (before 37 weeks of gestation). We …

Height With Age Affects Body Mass Index (Bmi) Assessment Of Chronic Disease Risk, Peter R Holt, Osama Altayar, David H Alpers
Height With Age Affects Body Mass Index (Bmi) Assessment Of Chronic Disease Risk, Peter R Holt, Osama Altayar, David H Alpers
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Body mass index (BMI) is a function of weight and height, but changing height has not been emphasized. Using the Framingham Heart Study with 5 decades of data on anthropomorphic measurements and disease states, changing height with age was extracted, and BMI was calculated using current and "young" height (calculated as height at age < 40 years). Decreased height began at age 40, with a mean loss from ages 40 to 80 of 4.8 cm for women and 3.6 cm for men. Using cutoff values of 25 and 30 for overweight and obesity, ~12.5% of women and ~10% of men were misclassified. Comparable figures for obesity classification were ~10 and 8%. At age 70, ~20% of women and ~15% of men were misclassified. Using the BMI corrected to "young" height, obese subjects had an increased risk for developing pre-diabetes and diabetes, with a higher risk for women than men. Using corrected BMI, obese subjects had a higher risk for developing hypertension, lower than for diabetes and higher for men than for women. These data do not establish whether the increased disease risk is clinically important but demonstrate that there is an advantage to using BMI corrected for "young" height when compared with BMI using current age-related height.

Teens in rural communities are at greater risk of obesity than teens in urban areas. Diet and physical activity influence obesity risk. Understanding their perspectives is an important step in intervention design. This qualitative investigation explored teen perspectives on how living in a rural community influenced their diet and physical activity choices. Forty parent-teen pairs were recruited. Data collection included surveys and telephone interviews. This paper reports teen perspectives identified in the first interview. Thematic analysis was used to code and analyze the data. Findings revealed that the primary factor driving teens' diet and physical activity behaviors was the teens …

The Effect Of Obesity On Comorbidities: A Benchmark Study, Kaley Nolen
MSN Capstone Projects
Obesity is distinguished by a body mass index (BMI) greater than 30. Tremmel et al. (2017) reports obese individuals are at a greater risk for developing cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer. In 2014, approximately 641 million adults were classified as obese (Zhang et al., 2018). This epidemic has drastically worsened over the last two decades resulting in obesity ranking as the fifth most common cause of death globally (Safaei et al., 2021). Okunogbe et al. (2021) states, slowing the incidence rate of obesity by 5% will save approximately $3.3 billion annually between 2020-2060. The pathophysiology and cause of obesity is …

Journal of Community Hospital Internal Medicine Perspectives
Leukopenia on routine laboratory testing creates a concerning situation for primary care providers due to its association with hematological malignancies. Although not all leukopenia is due to underlying cancer, it can trigger an expensive and exhausting work-up in the process of ruling it out. There is neither real-world data on the prevalent causes of leukopenia as seen in the community nor definitive guidelines on the utilization of flow-cytometry in this setting. We conducted this retrospective study at our community academic center to demonstrate the distribution of various causes of leukopenia as well as the utility of flow-cytometry. Our study demonstrates …

This review article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of recent epidemiology, pathogenesis, risk factors, and premalignant conditions of gastric cancer. Worldwide, gastric cancer is one of the most common and most fatal cancers. The incidence and mortality remain high in regions such as East Asia and Eastern Europe. Although there is a lower incidence in the United States, it remains a deadly disease. Age, gender, and race are non-modifiable demographic risk factors for developing gastric cancer. There have been several dietary and lifestyle risk factors such as salt preserved foods, N-nitroso compounds containing foods, tobacco smoke, alcohol use, and …

Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin cofactor for many enzymatic reactions in the body. It plays a vital role in the normal maturation of red blood cells and in producing proteins needed for normal neurological function. The most common presentations of vitamin B12 deficiency are hematological abnormalities and neurological manifestations. Pseudo-thrombotic microangiopathy, a syndrome of hemolysis and thrombocytopenia, may mimic the presentation of thrombotic microangiopathies such as thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, an uncommon presentation of vitamin B12 deficiency. We present the case of a 58-year-old male with no significant past medical history who presented with severe macrocytic anemia and thrombocytopenia with …

Climate change has adversely affected maize productivity. Thereby, a holistic understanding of metabolic crosstalk among its organs is important to address this issue. Thus, we reconstructed the first multi-organ maize metabolicmodel, iZMA6517, and contextualized itwith heat and cold stress transcriptomics data using expression distributed reaction flux measurement (EXTREAM) algorithm. Furthermore, implementing metabolic bottleneck analysis on contextualized models revealed differences between these stresses. While both stresses had reducing power bottlenecks, heat stress had additional energy generation bottlenecks. We also performed thermodynamic driving force analysis, revealing thermodynamics-reducing power-energy generation axis dictating the nature of temperature stress responses. Thus, a temperaturetolerant maize ideotype can …

Two of the most prevalent neurodegenerative disorders (NDDs), Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD), present significant challenges to healthcare systems worldwide. While the etiologies of AD and PD differ, both diseases share commonalities in synaptic dysfunction, thereby focusing attention on the role of neurotransmitters. The possible functions that platelets may play in neurodegenerative illnesses including PD and AD are becoming more acknowledged. In AD, platelets have been investigated for their ability to generate amyloid-ß (Aß) peptides, contributing to the formation of neurotoxic plaques. Moreover, platelets are considered biomarkers for early AD diagnosis. In PD, platelets have been studied for …

Hospital acquired pressure injuries (HAPIs) contribute to longer length of stay, poor clinical outcomes and increased healthcare costs.
A literature review showed that the implementation of visual cues to identify patients who require assistance with mobility and positioning in addition to the implementation of scheduled turn teams could have a positive health impact for the patients at RGH and reduce HAPIs incidence. Research suggests that educating unlicensed staff to recognize patient Braden Scale scores and to provide daily care based on risk factors for skin breakdown may lead to improved clinical outcomes.

In this study, we investigated the metabolic alterations associated with clinical response to chemotherapy in patients with ovarian cancer. Pre- and post-neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) tissues from patients with high-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSC) who had poor response (PR) or excellent response (ER) to NACT were examined. Desorption electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (DESI-MS) was performed on sections of HGSC tissues collected according to a rigorous laparoscopic triage algorithm. Quantitative MS-based proteomics and phosphoproteomics were performed on a subgroup of pre-NACT samples. Highly abundant metabolites in the pre-NACT PR tumors were related to pyrimidine metabolism in the epithelial regions and oxygen-dependent proline …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
INTRODUCTION: Wearable technology is a quickly evolving field, and new devices with new features to measure/estimate physiological variables are being released constantly. Despite their use, the validity of the devices are largely unknown to the users or researchers, and the quality of the studies that do test validity and reliability vary widely. PURPOSE: Therefore, the purpose of this systematic review was to review the current validity and reliability literature concerning consumer-grade wearable technology measurements/estimates of physiological variables during exercise. Additionally, we sought to perform risk of bias assessments utilizing the novel WEArable technology Risk of Bias and Objectivity Tool (WEAR-BOT). …

The Effect Of Ibuprofen On Thermoregulatory Responses And Gastrointestinal Distress To Exercise In Hot Environments, Alyssa Bailly, Jonathan Specht, Serena Garcia, Steven Klepacz, Suzana Andrade De Oliveira, David Lucero, Fabiano Amorim
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Ibuprofen, a commonly used nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) among athletes to alleviate pain and inflammation during exercise, is hypothesized to mitigate exercise-induced increases core temperature (Tc) and improve heat tolerance during exercise in hot environments. However, its prophylactic use specially during exercise associated with heat stress may lead to harmful effects specifically inducing gastrointestinal complications such upper-GI bleeding. PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of ibuprofen on thermoregulatory responses and the occurrence of gastrointestinal symptoms to exercise in a hot environment. METHODS: In a double-blind, randomized, counterbalanced cross-over design, 6 endurance trained males and females (n=12) completed 60-minutes of treadmill running …
Phenotypic Correlations Between Enteric Methane Emissions And Feeding Behaviour Traits In Beef Cattle, Sean Crowley
Phenotypic Correlations Between Enteric Methane Emissions And Feeding Behaviour Traits In Beef Cattle, Sean Crowley
ORBioM (Open Research BioSciences Meeting)
Background
Animal breeding for methane mitigation offers the unique potential to make cumulative and permanent improvements, setting it apart from nutritional or management strategies that require ongoing investment. Internationally multiple phenotypes for enteric methane emissions have been defined, however the complexity of the relationship between methane and feed intake and ultimately animal performance, has meant there has been little consensus on which methane definition should be used in breeding goals.
Aims
Previous enteric methane research focused on traditional methane metrics like yield, intensity and residual emissions, leaving a gap in understanding how alternative traits, such as feeding behaviour, impact methane …
