Theological Implications Of The Symbols And Signs In The Sacrament Of Matrimony Of The Syro-Malabar Church, Nelson Mathew O. Carm.

Journal of Global Catholicism

This article discusses the significance of the signs and symbols used in the sacrament of the marriage of the Syro-Malabar Church and the adaptations from different cultures, particularly the Hindu culture of India. It concentrates on the specific elements found in the marriage celebration of the St. Thomas Christians. The rituals that are unique to the Sacrament of Matrimony of the Syro-Malabar Church, mainly expressed through symbols and signs, remain a significant contribution to the liturgy, spirituality, and theology of the Sacrament of Matrimony, and to the theology of inculturation. In the Syro-Malabar liturgy, marriage rituals, and signs and symbols …

Family Welfare And Pernicious Property: White Womanhood And Catholic Social Thought In The United States, Kate Ward Jun 2023

Family Welfare And Pernicious Property: White Womanhood And Catholic Social Thought In The United States, Kate Ward

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

A significant literature presents the Catholic social thought tradition (CST) as a resource for combating racism and white supremacy, and an equally important body of work critiques the documentary tradition for the ways it fails to adequately address these pernicious social sins. This essay will combine elements of both approaches to address a topic relatively modest in scope: showing how attention to the historical and contemporary operation of white womanhood, exposed by sociologist Jessie Daniels in her book Nice White Ladies, informs, critiques, and presents opportunities for Catholic social thought on gender and family, both in the ecclesial documents and …

Eudaimonist Exemplarism And Saints, Brian C. Clark May 2023

Eudaimonist Exemplarism And Saints, Brian C. Clark

Religious Studies Theses and Dissertations

Contemporary moral philosophy tends to treat saints as either maximally moral and thus exemplary only for those who share their ideals or as so morally excellent that they are inimitable and “Other.” Thus, the saint is practically useless as a model for plain persons. Moreover, in the case of Christian saints, modern moral theories tend not to account for their religious and theological dimensions. As a remedy, this dissertation argues for thinking about the exemplarity of saints in eudaimonist and theologically naturalist terms. Christian saints exemplify what Christians consider human flourishing, revising natural accounts of human flourishing but preserving the …

Eschatology And Christian Ethics: An Argument For Disabled Beatitude, Marco Peter Spataro May 2023

Eschatology And Christian Ethics: An Argument For Disabled Beatitude, Marco Peter Spataro

Religious Studies Honors Theses

Catholic eschatology studies four elements of the afterlife: Death, Judgement, Heaven, and Hell. The primary purpose of this paper will be to evaluate the prerequisites for beatification, the state of being for souls elevated to heavenly status. This paper will seek to argue in favor of disabled beatification, particularly for the souls whose mental illness prohibited their use of right reason in this life, through an examination of malignant theology, mental illness, a Catholic definition of God, and the implications such a definition has on the wider study and care of the mentally ill. I will then suggest a path …

African Spirituality For Ecological Conversion: The Case Of Mining In The Western Region Of Ghana, Nana Kofi Agyapong May 2023

African Spirituality For Ecological Conversion: The Case Of Mining In The Western Region Of Ghana, Nana Kofi Agyapong

Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations

Gold mining in the Western Region of Ghana poses a major dilemma. On the one hand, it serves as a great source of revenue for the region and the country at large. It also provides employment for millions of people. On the other hand, indiscriminate gold mining methods destroy ecological resources like land, water, and air, as well as the quality of life of people in the region. Consequently, the negative impacts of these environmentally hostile practices challenge us to re-evaluate our relationship with the environment. It is a call not to see the environment and its resources as something …

Contingency And Contestation In Christianity And Liberalism, Michael P. Moreland

Notre Dame Law Review

What is the relationship of Christianity to liberalism? Answers include: Liberalism is a product of the moral legacy of Christianity, such as the dignity of individual human persons, equality, rights, perhaps even some forms of democratic institutionalism. Or liberalism is a hostile reaction against Christianity by way of an autonomous individualism set against divinely ordained creatureliness and dependence, democracy against authority, egalitarianism against hierarchy. Or liberalism is in a modus vivendi relationship with Christianity and vice versa. Or perhaps there is something true about each of these answers.

Critiques of liberalism in law and politics come in waves. The liberal-communitarian …

Counter Narratives: A Phenomenological Study Of Inner-City Catholic School Teachers, Staci Wadlington Apr 2023

Counter Narratives: A Phenomenological Study Of Inner-City Catholic School Teachers, Staci Wadlington

Dissertations

Educational experiences of children can have positive or negative impacts on their future. This study used a method, counter-narratives, identified by Critical Race theorists to document the shared experiences of inner-city Catholic school educators during one of the most important time periods of education in our country, post Brown v Board of Education (1954). Using a qualitative and phenomenological approach, the researcher interviewed educators from an inner-city Catholic school to investigate their experiences during the post-restructuring phase, which essentially segregated a select group of schools from the larger archdiocese school system. These targeted schools were renamed, provided an alternate governing …

C.S. Lewis, Public Intellectual, Samuel Joeckel Apr 2023

C.S. Lewis, Public Intellectual, Samuel Joeckel

Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal

Despite such hints and evocations, it appears that no one has attempted a systematic analysis of Lewis as a public intellectual. That is, no one has methodically employed extant theories on the concept of the public intellectual to assess how (or even whether) he fits the bill. No one has used these theories as an interpretive lens for analyzing Lewis’ writings. No one has analyzed the historical conditions during Lewis’ lifetime that pushed him into the role of public intellectual. No one has explored how Lewis adheres to the conventions of public discourse, the language of the public intellectual. And …

Person And Society: The Trinitarian Anthropology Of Henri De Lubac, Sara Hulse Apr 2023

Person And Society: The Trinitarian Anthropology Of Henri De Lubac, Sara Hulse

Dissertations (1934 -)

This dissertation argues that the Trinity is central to the theological anthropology of Henri de Lubac. Although the Trinitarian dimension of his thought receives scant attention in secondary scholarship, de Lubac insists on the centrality of the Trinity to anthropology from his first public lecture through his final, post-conciliar works. This dissertation further illustrates how de Lubac’s Trinitarian anthropology shapes his anthropological works, concluding that he deserves to be counted among the Trinitarian thinkers of the twentieth century. To make this argument, Chapter One defines Trinitarian anthropology as the application of the Trinitarian mystery to the human person, and sketches …

“That They All May Be One”: A Virtuous Community, A Paradigm For Environmental Sustainability, Abundio R. Babor Jr. Jan 2023

“That They All May Be One”: A Virtuous Community, A Paradigm For Environmental Sustainability, Abundio R. Babor Jr.

Landas

The impact of human actions on the environment has created a myriad of problems. We need a moral paradigm that can facilitate an essential and substantial transformation to recover the bond between one another in the common home. Communal and environmental sustainability happens when human beings in the community live prudently, justly, steadfastly, and moderately with faith, hope, and charity. A virtuous community focused on the habitual practice of the virtues sustains the environment because when human beings treat each other prudently, justly, steadfastly, and moderately with faith, hope, and charity, they act in the same manner toward non-human species. …

A Reframed Consistent Ethic Of Life On Nuclear Energy: Exploring The Moral Implications Of The Revival Of The Bataan Nuclear Power Plant, Archie R. Magarao Jan 2023

A Reframed Consistent Ethic Of Life On Nuclear Energy: Exploring The Moral Implications Of The Revival Of The Bataan Nuclear Power Plant, Archie R. Magarao

Landas

This paper critically examines the moral implications of reviving the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP) through the lens of the Reframed Consistent Ethic of Life (RCEL). While the Philippine government highlights its potential economic benefits, the study raises serious concerns about nuclear waste and its risks to human and nonhuman life. It evaluates both the advantages and dangers of nuclear energy, emphasizing threats to ecological integrity and long-term safety. The paper also questions the adequacy of existing plans for nuclear waste disposal, particularly in light of geopolitical and security challenges. In response, it proposes key moral perspectives: rethinking God’s presence …

Commercialization Of Separated Human Body Parts - Unpacking Instrumentalization Approach, Arseny Shevelev, Georgy Shevelev Jan 2023

Commercialization Of Separated Human Body Parts - Unpacking Instrumentalization Approach, Arseny Shevelev, Georgy Shevelev

Pace International Law Review

The principle of non-commercialization, which prohibits trade in separated human body parts, has long been firmly embedded in many European legal orders and has become an integral part of them. However, many new uses for human biomaterials have now been discovered, and the need for them has reached a historical climax. This paper aims to explain the main tenets of non-commercialization theory, including such principles as human dignity and need to protect human’s health, and to show that these categories have so far been understood in a very one-sided and visceral way, and largely in contradiction to their true spirit. …

Foundations And Principles Of A Reframed Consistent Ethic Of Life, Anatoly Angelo R. Aseneta Jan 2023

Foundations And Principles Of A Reframed Consistent Ethic Of Life, Anatoly Angelo R. Aseneta

Landas

Joseph Cardinal Bernardin’s Consistent Ethic of Life (CEL) is a moral vision that can be used to uphold the value and dignity of human life consistently in all its stages and circumstances. However, it must be reframed to acknowledge the new ways in which life is threatened today; these include the modern ecological crisis of our common home. This essay seeks to paint a more concrete picture of a reframed CEL. The first part rebuilds the original foundations of Bernardin’s moral vision in light of the crisis of our common home. The second part identifies and reframes principles from Catholic …

Catholic Higher Education And Student Formation In A Post-Roe World: A Modest Proposal For Women’S Personhood And Reproductive Autonomy, M.T. Davila Jan 2023

Catholic Higher Education And Student Formation In A Post-Roe World: A Modest Proposal For Women’S Personhood And Reproductive Autonomy, M.T. Davila

Religious & Theological Studies Faculty Publications

Student formation is a key missional goal for Catholic colleges and universities. In many instances this involves requiring coursework in theology and ethics that exposes students to the essentials of the tradition and key themes of Christian life such as vocation, marriage, family, work, and society. And yet, historically we fail to consider the changing landscape of life in community, especially for women and other gender minorities. The personhood of women and reproductive autonomy, both topics that have been tangled in the culture war of the abortion debate, is a particular challenge to the goal of formation. The US Supreme …

The Common Good In The Vision Of John Paul Ii And Francis: From Solidarity To Care For Creation, Martial Tatchim Fotso Jan 2023

The Common Good In The Vision Of John Paul Ii And Francis: From Solidarity To Care For Creation, Martial Tatchim Fotso

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis focuses on the evolution of the understanding of the common good in Catholic Social Teaching (CST) from John Paul II to Francis. I demonstrate that while the vision of John Paul II on the common good stressed the principle of solidarity for the good of all people and each individual, Francis made a significant change by expanding the concept of common good beyond the human good to an integral ecology. The principles of common good and solidarity are essentially related in the social vision of John Paul II. Solidarity is “a firm and persevering determination to commit oneself …
