Small Satellite Conference

Recently, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) capabilities have seen an exponential increase in interest from academia and industry that can be a disruptive, transformative development for future missions. Specifically, AI/ML concepts for edge computing can be integrated into future missions for autonomous operation, constellation missions, and onboard data analysis. However, using commercial AI software frameworks onboard spacecraft is challenging because traditional radiation-hardened processors and common spacecraft processors cannot provide the necessary onboard processing capability to effectively deploy complex AI models. Advantageously, embedded AI microchips being developed for the mobile market demonstrate remarkable capability and follow similar size, weight, …

Small Satellite Conference

This paper presents the main characteristics of the new Scout framework in ESA's Earth Observation directorate aimed to exploit and support the New Space initiative in Europe in the frame of Earth science missions. In particular, details will be provided to explain the subtle balance between the commercial new space aspects and the science traditional aspects of the Scout framework. An overview of the 4 missions selected during the first consolidation round will be given as well as the one under development highlighting for each one the innovations, applications as well as the challenges and the achievements of the development …

A Small Satellite Constellation For Monitoring Of The Aurora, Giada Staniscia, Bastiaan Lagaune, Sten Berge, Milan Battelino, Stefan Kraft

Small Satellite Conference

As part of the European Space Agency's D3S (Distributed Space Weather Sensor System), a small satellite constellation is currently being designed by OHB Sweden which will observe space weather impacts in Earth's vicinity by monitoring of the auroral oval. The primary objective of the Aurora mission is to observe the Aurora Borealis and Australis continuously and as complete as possible. The auroral emissions are the result of interactions of the Solar Wind and Coronal Mass Ejections with the Earth which drive the location and strength of electron precipitation on the ionosphere. Such observations will thereby allow the identification, characterization and …

Thirty Years After The Council: The Catholic Church In The Philippines' Reception Of Pcp Ii And Remembrance Of Martial Law, Kenjie I. Cortez Jun 2023

Thirty Years After The Council: The Catholic Church In The Philippines' Reception Of Pcp Ii And Remembrance Of Martial Law, Kenjie I. Cortez

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

2021 was a momentous time for the Catholic Church in the Philippines as it commemorated the thirtieth anniversary of the Second Plenary Council of the Philippines (PCP II).2 Nonetheless, the following year was in no way inconsequential because it marked both thirty years since the promulgation of the Council's Decrees and fifty years since the declaration of martial law. While one may find this a sheer coincidence, one must not forget that the country’s martial law experience significantly shaped PCP II’s and its vision of renewal for the Philippine Church.3 With the election of the dictator’s son and namesake to …

Synodality, Community, And The Margins, Gemma Tulud Cruz Jun 2023

Synodality, Community, And The Margins, Gemma Tulud Cruz

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

Synodality is generally understood to represent a process of discernment-with the aid of the Holy Spirit-involving bishops, priests, religious, and lay Catholics, each according to the gifts and charisms of their vocation. As Gaudium et Spes reminds us it is for God’s people as a whole, with the help of the Holy Spirit, and especially for pastors and theologians, to listen to the various voices of our day, discerning them and interpreting them, and to evaluate them in the light of the divine word, so that the revealed truth can be increasingly appropriated, better understood, and more suitably expressed (GS, …

"I Think It's Biblically Wrong, But Temptation Gets The Better Of Me": A Survey On Out-Of-Control Sexual Behavior In A Christian Cohort Of Men In The Uk, Timothy C Y Lau, Glenn M. Miles May 2023

"I Think It's Biblically Wrong, But Temptation Gets The Better Of Me": A Survey On Out-Of-Control Sexual Behavior In A Christian Cohort Of Men In The Uk, Timothy C Y Lau, Glenn M. Miles

Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence

The current study aims to better understand influences on men within the UK Christian community on their engagement with pornography and prostitution. The authors utilized the Carnes (2012) survey to examine the landscape of sexual knowledge and behaviours, and to identify symptoms, and the propensity towards, “out-of-control sexual behavior” among participants. Data from a survey sent to the Christian community through church networks and word of mouth was used for this study. Of the 491 men who participated, the majority (94%, 460) described their personal Christian faith as “strong.” Despite the Christian faith community's moral code of conduct, the survey …

Exploring Learning Experiences Of Community College Faculty Short-Term Study Abroad Leaders Using Ipa And Visual Research, Rachel Ann Simpson May 2023

Exploring Learning Experiences Of Community College Faculty Short-Term Study Abroad Leaders Using Ipa And Visual Research, Rachel Ann Simpson

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations

As short-term study abroad programs increase in popularity and number at community colleges, it is vital to examine the effect on the faculty who lead these programs. The purpose of this research study was to explore how community college faculty who lead short-term study abroad programs perceive personal learning including social and cultural factors and how they apply any change in perspectives to their non-study abroad courses. At the community college level, faculty-led short-term study abroad courses play a key role in addressing the growing importance of intercultural competence within undergraduate education. Despite the critical role that faculty play in …

A Mixed Methods Study Of Faculty Perceptions And Self Assessments Of Constructivist Teaching Methods At A Regional University In The State Of Georgia, Santha Kumari Jetty

Theses and Dissertations

The study, "A Mixed Methods Study of Faculty Perceptions and Self-Assessments of Constructivist Teaching Methods at a Regional University in the State of Georgia” examined the self-assessments and perceptions of faculty at a regional university in the State of Georgia. The study followed a sequential mixed-methods study with three phases of the study, namely, a quantitative ‘descriptive’ phase, a qualitative ‘bounded case study’ phase, and a mixed-methods phase in a joint display table. The purpose of this sequential mixed methods study was to examine the understanding and implementation of constructivist teaching practices by faculty in their classrooms at a regional …

Class, Politics And Family Life: A Study Of Progressive Working-Class Parenting, Elise Danielle West Mar 2023

Class, Politics And Family Life: A Study Of Progressive Working-Class Parenting, Elise Danielle West

Theses and Dissertations

Parenting is entwined with political and social class realities, but rarely is this intersection explored. Seminal research in social reproduction theory finds that working-class parents pass on to their kids a “sense of constraint,” while middle-class parents successfully transmit class advantages that reproduce inequality (Lareau, 2011, p. 3). This research could be enriched by a political analysis that considers parents’ political ideology. On the other hand, research addressing ideological reproduction describes a model of progressive parenting that takes a stand against inequality, but it is not known how this model applies to working-class parents (Lakoff 2002). In this exploratory project, …

Using Tonga Proverbs In Presenting Biblical Concepts, Johan Siachibila Mar 2023

Using Tonga Proverbs In Presenting Biblical Concepts, Johan Siachibila

Journal of Adventist Mission Studies

The Tonga tribe, located in the Southern part of Zambia, is rich in cultural communication. The Tonga people often use proverbs to communicate important ideas with each other, to solve problems among themselves, during common conversations, and when teaching Tonga children. They also are proud that their proverbs are a source of wisdom, with every phase of life having important proverbs attached to them. The Tongas have more than 500 proverbs, however, in this article I will only look at some of them to illustrate how they could be used in presenting biblical principles in the Tonga cultural setting. This …
