Structural And Dielectrical Behavior Of Polypyrrole/Huntite Composites, Zeynep Türk, Nazlican Şahi̇n, Seyfullah Madakbaş, Ferhat Şen, Kadi̇r Esmer
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
In order to characterize stable composites that will contribute to industrial applications, polypyrrole (PPy)/huntite composites were prepared by the physical method. Polypyrrole (PPy)/huntite composites were produced at various huntite concentrations (10, 20, 30, 40 wt.%). Polypyrrole/huntite was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Thermal Gravimetric Analyses (TGA), Differential Thermal Analyses (DTA), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and dielectrical properties were investigated by Impedance Analyzer at the room temperature. The FTIR spectra show that huntite mineral coordinate with polymers through carbonate groups. TGA results indicate the main cause of mass loss can be moisture in the samples and unreacted pyrrole monomer. …

Surfactant Incorporated Preyssler Polyoxoanion: A Transition Metal Substituted Mo-Php Complex And Its Applications, Bharath Samannan, Jothi Selvam, Yi-Li Lin, Praveen Peter, Jeyabalan Thavasikani
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
The complex was prepared with preyssler polyoxoanion and transition metal (Mo), a cationic surfactant as a connector. It has tuneable physical and chemical potential which has been exploited to study novel properties. A new technique of shock wave impulses is also used on the Mo-PHP complex. Extensive use of cationic surfactants could impact accumulation in the environment set off the surfacing of bacterial resistance. Due to the electrostatic binding to bacterial surface, the hydrophobic parts of cationic surfactants tend to penetrate bacterial cell walls and may cause membrane lysis and bacteria death. The surfactant-supported and direct release of metal ions …

Dual-Reactive Hydrogels Functionalizable Using ?Huisgen Click? And ?Schiff Base? Reactions, Nergi̇z Cengi̇z
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Hydrogels incorporating different reactive groups are important platforms for the fabrication of functional materials through the conjugation of diverse molecules. In this study, a dual-reactive hydrogel system was designed utilizing aldehyde and azide groups containing methacrylate monomers. Hydrogels were obtained in the presence of a dimethacrylate crosslinker with a combination of hydrophilic PEG-based monomers via free-radical polymerization. The azide and aldehyde sites of the hydrogel network are reactive towards alkyne and amine functional groups, respectively. The advantage of the different reactivities of these functional groups was demonstrated through the attachment of two different dye molecules onto the hydrogel platform via …

Facile Preparation Of Polyolefin-Based Amphiphilic Graft Copolymer Fibers By Combination Of Photoinduced Graft Copolymerization And Electrospinning, Çağatay Altinkök
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
A novel amphiphilic graft copolymer possessing polypropylene (PP) main chain and poly(oligoethylene glycol methacrylate) (POEGMA) pendant units was synthesized starting from chlorinated polypropylene (PP-Cl), and characterized. PP-Cl produced macroradicals at chlorine bounded carbon atoms by visible light irradiation in the presence of dimanganese decacarbonyl [Mn2(CO)10] and initiated the free-radical photopolymerization of an acrylate monomer, namely oligoethylene glycol methacrylate (OEGMA). Furthermore, fiber formation ability of PP-g-POEGMA was tested by electrospinning technique. The chemical structure and some features of the corresponding amphiphilic graft copolymer PP-g-POEGMA was characterized by implementing spectral (FT-IR, 1H-NMR), chromatographic (GPC), morphological (SEM), water wettability (WCA), and thermal (TGA) …

Superhydrophobic and oleophilic modification of commercial acoustic melamine foam (MF) was made in this study. The modification was carried out with chitosan (CHI) and silica particles (SiO2), by using both a layer-by-layer-like approach (LbL) and dip coating technique. Subsequently, 1-octadecanethiol was used as a secondary modification agent. QCM-D, SEM, and FTIR analyses confirmed that the coating was successfully performed. After the modification, the column wall thicknesses increased than that of MF and they ranged from 25% to 48% for modified MF with an LbL-like approach (MMF) and modified MF via dip coating technique (MMFd), respectively. The sorption experiments showed that …

Spectrophotometric Quantification Of Paracetamol And Tramadol Hydrochloride By Chemometric Calibration Methods, Faysal Seli̇moğlu, Nermi̇n Pinarcik
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
The results of UV spectrophotometric analysis were analysed using partial least squares (PLS) and principal component regression (PCR) techniques to allow simultaneous evaluation of tramadol hydrochloride (TRA) and p-acetaminophen (PAR) in tablets. A calibration set of 16 mixtures, each containing PAR and TRA in various amounts, was created using a 24-full fractional design. The absorbance data set for the calibration set were obtained between 215?280 nm (?? = 0.1 nm). Subsequently, the concentration and absorbance sets were used to generate PCR and PLS calibrations. The ratio spectra- first derivative method was devised as a solution to the same problem to …

Occupational health and safety are critical in promoting the wellness of organizations and employees. The COVID-19 pandemic is one of the most life-threatening viruses encountered in recent history, providing a unique opportunity for research to examine factors that drive employee safety behavior. Drawing from terror management theory, we propose and test a moderated mediation model using data collected from employees working during a peak of the pandemic. We identify two sources of influence - one external (i.e., media exposure), and one internal (i.e., HR practices) to the organization - that shape employees' mortality salience and safety behaviors. We find that …
Temperature Regulation Of Pipecolic Acid-Mediated Plant Systemic Immunity In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Alyssa Shields
Temperature Regulation Of Pipecolic Acid-Mediated Plant Systemic Immunity In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Alyssa Shields
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Significant crop losses are caused by pathogenic infections annually, which are exacerbated by increasing global temperatures due to climate change. One way by which plants respond to pathogenic attacks is through the activation of pattern-triggered immunity (PTI), effector-triggered immunity (ETI), and systemic acquired resistance (SAR), which lead to production of the central defence phytohormone salicylic acid (SA). Accompanying SA release is the putative mobilization of pipecolic acid (Pip), which acts as an immune regulatory plant metabolite that works with and independently from SA. As demonstrated in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana following infection with the model bacterial pathogen Pseudomonas syringae …

“To Be Involved In A Meaningful Way”: Mobilizing Indigenous Knowledge In Environmental Monitoring Practices In Northern Ontario, Alanna Robbins
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
A steady shift in the environmental management literature encourages greater inclusion of traditional knowledge (TK) alongside Western science, much of it seeking to directly support Indigenous communities develop their own frameworks for environmental monitoring and stewardship. To date, little attention has been placed on research practices themselves as sites where interdisciplinary and intercultural work takes place to bridge between different knowledge systems and develop best practices for effective collaboration. Matawa Water Futures (MWF), the object of study for this thesis project, is a three-year water stewardship project involving Indigenous and non-Indigenous researchers, environmental managers, and community interns, working with the …

Characterization Of The Clostridioides Difficile Glycosyl Hydrolase Ccsz, Brian Lowrance
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Bacteria inhabit many of the harshest environments on Earth; persisting and thriving in conditions thought to be unsuitable for life. One common strategy to withstand these environments is the formation of a biofilm. Biofilm composition varies greatly, depending on the underlying community that produces it. Cellulose, a polymer consistently prevalent in biofilms, has been identified as a virulence factor in many pathogens and is suspected to be involved in pathogenesis by Clostridioides difficile. C. difficile is the #1 cause of hospital acquired diarrhea, which can range from mild to life-threatening infections. Biofilm formation is hypothesized to be involved in …
Towards Ending Incarceration Of Indigenous Peoples In Canada: A Critical, Narrative Inquiry Of Hegemonic Power In The Gladue Report Process, Judah Oudshoorn
Towards Ending Incarceration Of Indigenous Peoples In Canada: A Critical, Narrative Inquiry Of Hegemonic Power In The Gladue Report Process, Judah Oudshoorn
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Abstract
This study is concerned with the possibility that Gladue perpetuates the hegemonic powers of settler colonialism, white supremacy, patriarchy, and neoliberalism. Gladue is intended to remediate systemic anti-Indigenous racism by requiring judges to consider all alternatives to incarceration when sentencing Indigenous peoples, yet Indigenous incarceration rates continue to rise precipitously. On the surface, Gladue does not appear to disrupt the hegemonic status quo. How is it that the Canadian state, even when ‘remediating,’ keeps producing the same – colonial, oppressive, and tyrannical – result?
This qualitative study used a critical, narrative methodology, interviewing Gladue report writers (n=9) and judges …

Inspirational Bullshit: The Good, The Bad, And The Vacuous, Esther Abel
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
There are myriad methods offered in the “self-help industry” and on social media promising to improve happiness. Some messages are evidence-based, often drawn from positive psychology research, and suggest actions requiring time and effort, while other messages may offer feel-good platitudes that are devoid of meaningful guidance; we label this latter type of content “inspirational bullshit.” Across two manuscripts, we investigate the predictors of liking different kinds of positive self-help content, from meaningless randomly-generated phrases to vacuous positivity to evidence-based advice. In the first manuscript, across three studies, bullshit receptivity (a tendency to judge pseudo-profound statements as profound) and people’s …
Navigating Waters: Experiences Of Filipino Canadian Identity Making In The Diaspora, John Felix Tolentino
Navigating Waters: Experiences Of Filipino Canadian Identity Making In The Diaspora, John Felix Tolentino
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Research states that while Filipino Canadians are the largest growing migrant population in Canada, they are the least represented and understudied subjects in the academy. The primary purpose of this qualitative study is to better understand the experiences of Filipino Canadians and how they create their identities in the diaspora. Since few studies take on a social work lens to explore these important stories, I attempt to unearth these experiences using these guiding questions: (1) How do Filipino Canadians integrate their cultural identity in the diaspora? (2) What are the sociopolitical and historical conditions that inform these identities? Following Charmaz’s …
The Power Of Dissent: Mitigating False Polarization And Cross-Party Dislike In Online Interactions, Victoria Parker
The Power Of Dissent: Mitigating False Polarization And Cross-Party Dislike In Online Interactions, Victoria Parker
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
While actual polarization is on the rise in the United States, perceived polarization (i.e., false polarization) is growing at an even faster rate, contributing to increased cross-party hostility. A meaningful amount of out-party dislike may be produced by partisans’ dramatic overestimates of the prevalence of extreme, undesirable views among political opponents. In the current research, we examine whether exposing people to out-party dissenters who challenge their copartisans’ extreme views might help reduce people’s misperceptions of their opponents’ extreme views, and possibly mitigate animosity. Across five studies (N = 3789), we explore how seeing public ingroup dissent (in the form of …
(Re)Mediating History In Canadian Auto/Biographic Long Poems Since 1970, Heather Olaveson
(Re)Mediating History In Canadian Auto/Biographic Long Poems Since 1970, Heather Olaveson
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Responding to current topics of national debate around cultural appropriation, authenticity of voice and identity, historical commemoration, and foundational systems of social injustice, this dissertation takes as its launching point the question of how we are implicated in each other's histories. It examines the politics of rewriting history in Canadian auto/biographic long poems from 1970 to the present, reconsidering historiography as it intersects with life writing, gender, race, and the performance of voice. What narratives are reimagined about the lives of Canadian historical figures, how are such stories articulated, and who is permitted to perform the telling? As a whole, …
Functional Residues Of Cjpata, Robert Lamont
Functional Residues Of Cjpata, Robert Lamont
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Antibiotic resistance in pathogenic bacteria continues to challenge clinicians and threaten the lives of infected individuals. For this reason, new classes of antibiotics or new targets for antibiotic therapy are needed to circumvent this global health crisis. In Gram-negative bacteria, the enzymes peptidoglycan O-acetyltransferase A and B (PatA and PatB), are responsible for adding acetyl groups to the C-6 hydroxyl group of N-acetyl muramic acid (MurNAc) in peptidoglycan (PG). These acetyl groups are responsible for inhibiting the activity of lysozyme from host organisms that hydrolyze the β1-4 glycosidic linkage between MurNAc and N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc). The acetyl groups …

Effect Of Stretch And Release On Myofascial Stem Cell Function In Vitro: A Putative Model To Understand The Molecular Benefits Of The Myofascial Release (Mfr) Technique, Ben Smith, Shahn Notta, Debasis Mondal
Research Day
Despite the beneficial effects of osteopathic manipulative techniques (OMT), there is a lack of in vitro models to understand the molecular mechanisms associated with these time-tested therapies. The Myofascial Release (MFR) technique is a non-invasive approach that involves passive stretching, hold and release, of the soft tissue to achieve myofascial homeostasis. Tissue-resident mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) can regulate the myofascial microenvironment by altering their secreted factors following stretch and release. Therefore, we initiated studies to develop an in vitro model to investigate the possible effects of stretch and release on MSC function, i.e. proliferation and differentiation capabilities, and changes in …

The so-called “meme stock” phenomenon of early 2021 was an unexpected, riveting, short-lived, and ultimately tragicomic (or maybe just tragic) event. It was the product of many things but, on some level and for some investors, it was political protest: grassroots “voice” in the form of online stock purchases.
The modern regulatory state does not have effective mechanisms for absorbing public perspectives in all their variety and nuance. Public input mechanisms (including but not limited to notice and comment rulemaking) are embedded within what Julie Cohen and Ari Waldman have called the “regulatory managerialist” model. Within this paradigm, non-expert knowledges …

Moving Between Entitlement And Co-Conspiracy: A Study Of How Support, Skills, And Community Can Advance Anti-Racism Efforts Of White Parents, Karin Marianne Cotterman
Doctoral Dissertations
Many white parents of white children (WPWC) do not know how to engage in conversations about race and racism with their children. Simultaneously, the lived realities of white identity are embodied and enacted in material and cultural terms in the lives of all white-identified folk who continue to be re-socialized into our dominant culture of white supremacy. As such, racism and white supremacy are taught through socialization via media, schooling, familial relationships and other social interactions (Harro, 2000). And as a result, whiteness and white supremacy are pervasive and endemic (Bell 2016; Delgado, & Stefanick, 2012; Ladson-Billings 2013, 2016; Ladson-Billings …

Working Towards Promotion To Full Professor: Strategies, Time Management, And Habits For Academic Librarian Mothers, Marta Bladek
Publications and Research
After briefly sharing my experience as an academic librarian mother, the chapter places it within the larger context of academia in which women, especially mothers, lag behind men in attaining the full professor rank. It then outlines the strategies that have enabled me to gradually make progress towards promotion. The chapter discusses strategies to use at the institutional level (familiarity with local requirements, personnel process and related trainings, as well as the availability of leaves and grants), at the departmental level (workflow adjustments, scheduling arrangements, and strategic choice of projects and service commitments), and then at the individual/personal level (seeking …

In the American system of government, courts are designed to operate within the legal sphere, with limited political interference. Is it possible, though, that a behavior that is at the heart of the political process can be influenced directly by a judicial decision? Focusing on voter registration big data for the universe of voters in North Carolina around the time of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the authors assess the roles of gender, political party affiliation, and age in voter registration. North Carolina is the only state whose voter registry has the necessary granularity over time and information needed. …

Differences In Religious Framing Of Muslims And Islam In American Media Coverage Before And After The Trump Campaign, Emily Greene-Colozzi, Amy Adamczyk, Senahan Kiyal Keles
Publications and Research
Over the last 20 years Muslims have received a disproportionate amount of news media attention. In 2017 they were again thrust into the spotlight when the Trump administration issued a travel ban blocking entry from seven predominately-Muslim countries. With our hand coding of over 900 newspaper articles and mixed modeling techniques, we examine the newspaper rhetoric surrounding Muslims before and during the Trump administration and across US states. We find that after President Trump’s election, fewer newspapers mentioned religion or referenced Muslim claimsmakers. We also reveal that higher state-level religious salience was associated with more newspapers referencing religious claimsmakers in …

Background: Tracheal reconstruction presents a challenge because of the difficulty in maintaining the rigidity of the trachea to ensure an open lumen and in achieving an intact luminal lining that secretes mucus to protect against infection.
Methods: On the basis of the finding that tracheal cartilage has immune privilege, researchers recently started subjecting tracheal allografts to "partial decellularization" (in which only the epithelium and its antigenicity are removed), rather than complete decellularization, to maintain the tracheal cartilage as an ideal scaffold for tracheal tissue engineering and reconstruction. In the present study, we combined a bioengineering approach and a cryopreservation technique …
