Abstract

Background: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) support groups are vital to TBI survivors in the community and provide resources to family caregivers (FCs) to mitigate caregiver burden. Resiliency is a necessary characteristic to cope with chronic diseases and the demands of caregiving. However, a gap exists in how TBI support groups mitigate family stress and empower coping and resiliency for the TBI survivor and FCs. Method: The quality improvement project assessed TBI survivors' and FCs' coping and resiliency before and after an educational module on coping, resiliency, and self-care strategies. Intervention: A quality improvement project in a support group of …

The Adaptation And Implementation Of A Comprehensive Retirement Transition Program For Members Of Law Enforcement, Renee White Jan 2023

The Adaptation And Implementation Of A Comprehensive Retirement Transition Program For Members Of Law Enforcement, Renee White

Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses

Due to job related PTSD and identification with their intense careers, police officers areat risk for substance use disorder and mental illness when they transition into retirement. This DNP project implemented a retirement transition program modeled from a successful federal program for military personnel that was structured as a five day, in-person experience designed to be efficient and cost effective. The aims of the project were to: 1) modify an existing comprehensive retirement transition program used by the US military for police officers in an unnamed state within 5 years of their projected retirement date; 2) implement and evaluate this …

Pollution by chemicals and waste impacts human and ecosystem health on regional, national, and global scales, resulting, together with climate change and biodiversity loss, in a triple planetary crisis. Consequently, in 2022, countries agreed to establish an intergovernmental science–policy panel (SPP) on chemicals, waste, and pollution prevention, complementary to the existing intergovernmental science–policy bodies on climate change and biodiversity. To ensure the SPP’s success, it is imperative to protect it from conflicts of interest (COI). Here, we (i) define and review the implications of COI, and its relevance for the management of chemicals, waste, and pollution; (ii) summarize established tactics …

Adaptive Multiple Distributed Bidirectional Spiral Path Planning For Foraging Robot Swarms, Qi Lu, Ryan Luna Jan 2023

Adaptive Multiple Distributed Bidirectional Spiral Path Planning For Foraging Robot Swarms, Qi Lu, Ryan Luna

Computer Science Faculty Publications

The Distributed Deterministic Spiral Algorithm (DDSA) has shown great foraging efficiency in robot swarms. However, when the number of robots in the swarm increases, scalability becomes a significant bottleneck due to increased collisions among robots, making it challenging to deploy them in the search space (e.g., 20 robots). To address this issue, we propose an adaptive Multiple-Distributed Bidirectional Spiral Algorithm (MDBSA) that enhances scalability. Our proposed algorithm partitions the squared search arena into multiple identical squared regions and assigns robots to regions dynamically based on the number of regions. In each region, a bidirectional spiral search path is planned, and …

The Universe Of Fluorinated Polymers And Polymeric Substances And Potential Environmental Impacts And Concerns, Rainer Lohmann, Robert J. Letcher Jan 2023

The Universe Of Fluorinated Polymers And Polymeric Substances And Potential Environmental Impacts And Concerns, Rainer Lohmann, Robert J. Letcher

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a diverse group of surface treatment chemicals falling under non-polymeric and polymeric categories. Polymeric PFAS are comprised of fluoropolymers, perfluoropolyethers, and side-chain fluorinated polymers (SCFPs). Fluorinated polymers and polymeric substances have gained a significant market due to their chemical stability. To date, research and regulatory concern has primarily focused on the environmental occurrence and health effects of non-polymeric PFAS, particularly perfluoroalkyl acids and precursors. Industries consider most fluoropolymers as being “polymers of low concern”, although there is already a considerable environmental burden and widespread contamination resulting from their production, manufacturing, and use. For example, …

Aqueous film-forming foams historically were used during fire training activities on Joint Base Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and created an extensive per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) groundwater contamination plume. The potential for PFAS bioconcentration from exposure to the contaminated groundwater, which discharges to surface water bodies, was assessed with mobile-laboratory experiments using groundwater from the contamination plume and a nearby reference location. The on-site continuous-flow 21-day exposures used male and female fathead minnows, freshwater mussels, polar organic chemical integrative samplers (POCIS), and polyethylene tube samplers (PETS) to evaluate biotic and abiotic uptake. The composition of the PFAS-contaminated groundwater was complex and …

Proof-Of-Stake For Spartangold, Nimesh Ashok Doolani

Master's Projects

Consensus protocols are critical for any blockchain technology, and Proof-of- Stake (PoS) protocols have gained popularity due to their advantages over Proof-of- Work (PoW) protocols in terms of scalability and efficiency. However, existing PoS mechanisms, such as delegated and bonded PoS, suffer from security and usability issues. Pure PoS (PPoS) protocols provide a stronger decentralization and offer a potential solution to these problems. Algorand, a well-known cryptocurrency, employs a PPoS protocol that utilizes a new Byzantine Agreement (BA) mechanism for consensus and Verifiable Random Functions (VRFs) to securely scale the protocol to accommodate many participants, making it possible to handle …

Unlearning Hidden Bias Between Refugees : An Initial Empirical Investigation, Akshay Sunil Gurnaney Jan 2023

Unlearning Hidden Bias Between Refugees : An Initial Empirical Investigation, Akshay Sunil Gurnaney

Master's Projects

The challenges that refugees in various regions encounter are common knowledge. One such challenge is a bias among refugees on ethnocentric grounds. In particular, there are various articles that have pointed out the struggles faced by Syrian refugees in countries like Europe as a result of implicit bias. In fact, the media coverage of Syrian crises and the government responses to the same shed negative light on the refugees themselves. On the contrary, the media coverage of Ukrainian crises is very different with lesser restrictions from the governments.

This research attempts to identify the extent of implicit bias between Ukrainian …

Mild Cognitive Impairment And Alzheimer’S Disease Detection And Testing Interface (Mci-Addti) Modeller10.4 Integrating Structure-Function Prediction Modules, Grant Galileo Jacobson

Master's Projects

In the population of adult human patients who over express Beta and Tau Amyloids, it is unclear why 40% of them do not have Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), when all patients with AD have an overexpression of Beta and Tau Amyloids. The MCI-AD-DTI project’s epigenetic pipeline is an evolving computation tool that seeks epigenetic-related information related to the observed disparity. The MCI-AD-DTI’s epigenetic pipeline’s ability to identify mutations currently relies solely on PyPDB for verification of its protein functionality evaluation. The assessment process of the industry standard application, Modeller10.4, is independent from the current epigenetic pipeline’s protein evaluation algorithm. Thus, this …

To answer these questions models are developed using data collected from a household online survey of e-commerce …

Crash Landing: The Airline Industry’S Failing Efforts To Remedy Its Sexist And Discriminatory Practices Towards Flight Attendants, Elise Gonzalez Jan 2023

Crash Landing: The Airline Industry’S Failing Efforts To Remedy Its Sexist And Discriminatory Practices Towards Flight Attendants, Elise Gonzalez

Journal of Air Law and Commerce

Since the deregulation of the airline industry, flight attendants have become the friendly faces and hallmark of airline brands across the globe. However, airlines went to unconstitutional heights to ensure that flight attendants looked, behaved, and acted in compliance with conservative and outdated notions about gender and sexuality. Piece by piece, the airline industry’s strict and misogynist policies that regulated female flight attendants’ appearance were declared a violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act; however, the sexist policies and attitudes maintain a pervasive and insidious presence in the modern airline industry.

Moreover, the airline industry’s dress and appearance …

The Drone Star State: How A Challenge To Texas Drone Law Became The Latest Battleground Between The First Amendment And The Right To Privacy, Edward W. "Ted" Tooley Jan 2023

The Drone Star State: How A Challenge To Texas Drone Law Became The Latest Battleground Between The First Amendment And The Right To Privacy, Edward W. "Ted" Tooley

Journal of Air Law and Commerce

Texas is unconstitutionally infringing upon the First Amendment in the form of its overly restrictive drone regulations. While the state originally set out to create a robust privacy law providing maximum protection to its citizens, its overbroad statute instead produced the latest constitutional conflict between two of our nation’s oldest and most sacred rights. For almost a decade, Texas drone law stood unchallenged, garnering the state a reputation as arguably the least friendly jurisdiction for drone journalism. These regulations, however, have never been more vulnerable. There is a constitutional challenge unfolding in federal district court that, if successful, will redefine …

Delayed Flights And Delayed Rights: It Is Time For The United States To Follow The European Union’S Lead And Enact More Regulations To Protect Airline Passengers, Hannah Foote Jan 2023

Delayed Flights And Delayed Rights: It Is Time For The United States To Follow The European Union’S Lead And Enact More Regulations To Protect Airline Passengers, Hannah Foote

Journal of Air Law and Commerce

Since Congress passed the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978, travelers have benefitted from airline deregulation through discounted prices and greater access to air travel, but these benefits have largely been offset by the reality that many airline passengers are unsatisfied with the airline industry’s customer service, or lack thereof. This Comment argues that the United States should follow the European Union’s lead and, in accordance with Regulation EC 261, require airlines to compensate passengers when their flights are delayed or canceled. The concentrated aviation industry has created a market that does not adequately protect airline passengers, and the courts have …

Flying Towards Extinction: The Role Of The Aviation Industry In Perpetuating International Wildlife Trafficking, Isabelle Dominguez

Journal of Air Law and Commerce

In the past sixty years, the world has developed significant concern for burgeoning environmental issues. Starting in the 1960s, governments, industries, and the public have embraced efforts to set standards for public and private actors in areas of environmental concern. Particularly, increased globalization has led to an increase in the trade of wildlife and its products, including endangered species.

Unregulated wildlife trade implicates various issues, such as conservation concerns, the spread of diseases, and even funding for criminal organizations. While sovereign governments work independently and together to combat wildlife trafficking and its effects, current law leaves significant gaps in the …

Rethinking Spectrum Governance After The Faa And Fcc’S Turf War Over 5g, Jace Breedlove

Journal of Air Law and Commerce

The rollout of 5G technology promised transformative benefits for consumers and the economy. But a protracted dispute between the FCC and FAA relating to 5G interference with airplane safety equipment prevented a smooth 5G rollout. While the FCC was giving wireless companies the green light to roll out 5G service, the FAA was warning of apocalypse if they did. What resulted was a turf war between the FAA and FCC, revealing a dysfunctional process (or lack thereof) for handling spectrum interference concerns. This Comment argues that the United States’ spectrum management system needs an overhaul to prevent similar agency turf …
