Introduction: Take-home naloxone (THN) is being made available across rural Appalachia to curb opioid overdose fatalities. Despite this initiative, some opioid users do not possess naloxone, and if they do, do not administer it to others.

Purpose: Research findings on risk factors that contribute to opioid overdose are presented. These factors, identified in a sample of 16 overdose cases, are (1) early onset age of opioid use; (2) progressive opioid use; (3) a transition from pain medication to heroin and fentanyl; (4) fears of being arrested at a naloxone intervention if first responders are contacted, and (5) limited knowledge of …

Dobbs, Abortion Laws, And In Vitro Fertilization, Kerry L. Macintosh

Faculty Publications

Health Organization1 has upended abortion jurisprudence. The case concerned a Mississippi law barring most abortions when the probable gestational age of the fetus was greater than fifteen weeks.2 Holding that the U.S. Constitution did not protect a right to abortion through the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment,3 the Court overruled Roe v. Wade4 and Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania v. Casey.

5 Abortion, it explained, differed from other protected acts because abortion destroyed potential life.6 Deeming rational basis review appropriate,7 the Court concluded that the Mississippi law was rationally related to what the Court accepted as legitimate state …

Persepsi Remaja Indonesia Terhadap Kebijakan Efisiensi Energi Listrik, Arius Krypton Onarelly

Jurnal Sosial Humaniora Terapan

Indonesia, rich in natural resources, is also a significant energy contributor to the global economy. However, despite having large fossil fuel reserves, Indonesia has topped the ranking of oil importers for the last 20 years. Indonesia is facing the Energy Trilemma. The first point is energy security. A condition when a country has a stable and adequate energy supply at a reasonable price for the short and long term. Energy poverty is the second aspect of the Indonesian Energy Trilemma and this is still common in Indonesia, especially outside Java and Bali. Even though in 2020 the Indonesian government has …

The Public’S Companies, Andrew K. Jennings

Fordham Journal of Corporate & Financial Law

This Essay uses a series of survey studies to consider how public understandings of public and private companies map into urgent debates over the role of the corporation in American society. Does a social-media company, for example, owe it to its users to follow the free-speech principles embodied in the First Amendment? May corporate managers pursue environmental, social, and governance (“ESG”) policies that could reduce short-term or long-term profits? How should companies respond to political pushback against their approaches to free expression or ESG?

The studies’ results are consistent with understandings that both public and private companies have greater public …

Loophole Entrepreneurship, Brian M. Sirman Dec 2023

Loophole Entrepreneurship, Brian M. Sirman

Fordham Journal of Corporate & Financial Law

All entrepreneurs seek favorable legal or regulatory treatment for their businesses. Sometimes this leads an entrepreneur to build a business within a gap in the law—a loophole. In so doing, these “loophole entrepreneurs” may avoid steep regulatory compliance costs that otherwise would beset (or perhaps prohibit) their businesses, thereby gaining advantages over competitors. Despite these benefits, loophole entrepreneurship is fraught with risks. Loopholes, by nature, are fragile, and their contours are often uncertain. Moreover, the stigma of “exploiting a loophole” (which connotes unfairness or deception) can provoke ill will among competitors, policymakers, and the public.

The ranks of loophole entrepreneurs …

The Investigation Of The Antimicrobial And Biofilm-Disrupting Properties Of Synthesized Hemibastadin Derivatives, Antonio Harvey, Andrew A. Yeagley Dec 2023

The Investigation Of The Antimicrobial And Biofilm-Disrupting Properties Of Synthesized Hemibastadin Derivatives, Antonio Harvey, Andrew A. Yeagley

Longwood Senior Thesis Proposal

We want to investigate structural changes to the core hemibastadin structure while attempting to make these derivatives biologically safer. Since these modifications have never been done before, we will need to design a synthesis of these new molecules. Due to the nature of the molecules (dimers), a divergent synthesis that allows for the creation of both halves simultaneously seems most appropriate. A successful synthesis of these compounds will allow us to further investigate these derivatives for their antimicrobial and biofilm-disrupting properties.

Optical instruments play a crucial role in physics education, providing essential material for students to understand complex concepts. This study aims to evaluate the scientific argumentation abilities of high school students regarding optical instruments. Conducted as a quantitative descriptive study, the research involved 60 eleventh-grade MIPA students from SMA Laboratorium UM. The research instrument was a scientific argumentation test comprising 12 essay questions, designed according to the Toulmin Argumentation Pattern (TAP) adaptation indicators, with a reliability coefficient of 0.332. Student responses were classified into five levels of scientific argumentation based on the TAP model, as developed by Sampson, Enderle, and …

Identifying Students’ Incorrect Common-Sense Knowledge In Forces And Motion: Recommendations For Developing Computer-Based Learning Media, Ahmad Ridlotul Adha, Sutopo Sutopo, Nasikhuddin Nasikhuddin

Jurnal Pendidikan Sains

Conceptual understanding is a crucial area in physics education research, focusing on students’ comprehension of fundamental principles. Force and motion, integral topics within this field, are inherently linked to students’ daily experiences. Numerous studies have identified the persistence of common sense knowledge among students. This research presents a literature review aimed at identifying such consistently held misconceptions. We analyzed 17 papers sourced from Publish or Perish 8, Google Scholar, and Scopus. Our analysis revealed that the concepts of impetus and active force are the most persistent forms of common sense knowledge, influenced by real-life experiences. Additionally, students’ difficulties with kinematics …

The Influence Of Predict, Observe, And Explain (Poe) Learning Accompanied By Formative Assessment On Misconceptions And Mastery Of Students’ Concepts Of Temperature And Heat Material, Ahmad Ilmar, Sentot Kusairi, Khusaini Khusaini Dec 2023

The Influence Of Predict, Observe, And Explain (Poe) Learning Accompanied By Formative Assessment On Misconceptions And Mastery Of Students’ Concepts Of Temperature And Heat Material, Ahmad Ilmar, Sentot Kusairi, Khusaini Khusaini

Jurnal Pendidikan Sains

High misconceptions and students’ mastery of concepts that are low enough are detected in temperature and heat material. To overcome this, teachers must apply learning strategies that are able to actively involve students in observation activities, namely the POE learning strategy. However, POE learning is not always easy to apply, students are still weak in communicating the results of their experiments. Therefore, a way is needed that helps students during the learning process to be more confident and not afraid when asked to argue, namely with formative assessment. POE learning accompanied by formative assessment aims to enable students to understand …

These regions also have a Regional People’s Representative Council (DPRD) to represent citizens and help create local laws with the regional heads. However, in 2022, Indonesia planned to move its capital, introducing a unique regional government setup not outlined in the Constitution. Under Law No. 3 of 2022, the new capital, called Nusantara, will have a special government run by an Authority Body at the ministerial level, headed by a President-appointed leader, not elected by the …
