Synthesis Of Novel Disulfide Triazole Organophosphate Containing Fire Retardants, Parsa Asaei, Jun Yong Kang
Synthesis Of Novel Disulfide Triazole Organophosphate Containing Fire Retardants, Parsa Asaei, Jun Yong Kang
Undergraduate Research Symposium Posters
Fire Retardants (FR) play a pivotal role in reducing smoke plume generation in wildland fires, which coincides with one of NSF EPSCoR’s HDRFS project objectives: investigating smoke plume dynamics. With the San Antonio Statement from 2010 banning halogenated FRs, there has been a push in research towards safer and better alternatives. The synthesis of a novel disulfide triazole organophosphate fire retardant (DSTP) would aid in NSF EPSCoR’s HDRFS research as a greener and better alternative. Therefore, our research aimed to i) develop a novel FR that harnesses the synergistic effects of phosphate-, disulfide-, and triazole-functionality that can be applied to …

Finding Diffs Of Pull Request Commits, Chalinee Karawek, John Businge
Undergraduate Research Symposium Posters
Github is a social network that allows developers' projects to be forked for various uses, such as developing the existing repository or use the code to steer development into a new direction. As more forks are made, the more bugs that can occur due to new pull requests not synchronizing with the upstream repository. PaReco is a clone detection tool by Ramkisoen et al. (Ramkisoen et al. 2022) that identifies the changes inside the files inside a pull request by performing diff on every file. However, in this study, we take a different approach to identifying the changes inside the …

Different Canopy Covers Effect Microclimate: How The Urban Heat Island Effect Can Be Reduced In Las Vegas, Melanie Sanchez, Alison Sloat
Undergraduate Research Symposium Posters
The purpose of my research was to investigate the effects that different canopy covers have on desert cities microclimates and how the City of Las Vegas can implement the best techniques to reduce temperatures in the hottest parts of town. I collected data on the different temperatures in two separate parts of the city (East Las Vegas, Midtown UNLV area) in one-hour intervals during two and three in the afternoon and surveyed four different areas on its tree canopy coverage. I also analyzed scientific peer reviewed studies which helped me see what other arid cities, like Phoenix, AZ, have done …
Third-Order Harmonic Generation In Few-Layer Graphene, Nicholas T. Pereira, Timothy Chung, Joshua O. Island
Third-Order Harmonic Generation In Few-Layer Graphene, Nicholas T. Pereira, Timothy Chung, Joshua O. Island
Undergraduate Research Symposium Posters
Optical harmonic generation is a phenomena that occurs in nonlinear materials and can be used to study the properties of those materials. For example, the nonlinear response of layered, two-dimensional (2D) materials can be used to characterize flake thickness, lattice and stacking symmetries, and crystal strain. Here, we study third harmonic generation (THG) in graphene and few-layer graphite as a precursor to investigating nonlinear optical properties of other 2D materials. We present a custom scanning setup for optical harmonic generation and present our results on few-layer flakes. These results provide a solid basis for future measurements of other new 2D …

Advancing Air Filtration Analysis: A Comprehensive Approach To Particle Loading Models, Gentry Nathaniel Berry
Advancing Air Filtration Analysis: A Comprehensive Approach To Particle Loading Models, Gentry Nathaniel Berry
Theses and Dissertations
Fibrous air filters are commonly used to capture airborne particles due to their potential for a relatively high capture efficiency and low airflow resistance. Their performance characteristics make them ideal candidates in many instances, spanning a wide range from residential to sensitive industrial applications. However, as more particles are captured, the performance of the filter will evolve. This evolution of performance typically manifests as a higher capture efficiency and higher airflow resistance resulting from the additional particulate deposits. The prediction of fibrous filter performance has been the focus of research for many decades, resulting in numerous analytical, numerical, and empirical …
Phenotyping Cotton Compactness Using Machine Learning And Uas Multispectral Imagery, Joshua Carl Waldbieser
Phenotyping Cotton Compactness Using Machine Learning And Uas Multispectral Imagery, Joshua Carl Waldbieser
Theses and Dissertations
Breeding compact cotton plants is desirable for many reasons, but current research for this is restricted by manual data collection. Using unmanned aircraft system imagery shows potential for high-throughput automation of this process. Using multispectral orthomosaics and ground truth measurements, I developed supervised models with a wide range of hyperparameters to predict three compactness traits. Extreme gradient boosting using a feature matrix as input was able to predict the height-related metric with R2=0.829 and RMSE=0.331. The breadth metrics require higher-detailed data and more complex models to predict accurately.
Dynamic Segmental Kinematics Of The Lumbar Spine During Diagnostic Movements, Paul Mcmullin
Dynamic Segmental Kinematics Of The Lumbar Spine During Diagnostic Movements, Paul Mcmullin
Theses and Dissertations
While lumbar kinematics can be measured in vivo, most measurements are invasive (such as percutaneous bone pins), provide high doses of radiation (such as biplane fluoroscopy), or are taken with the patient in a static position (such as MRIs). Recent work suggests that lumbar kinematics can be determined by dynamic measurements of epidermal strain in the lower back. This work aims to develop and examine a method of examining lumbar kinematics via optoelectronic motion capture utilizing skin-mounted markers in the lumbar region. Two studies were performed. One study examined lumbar epidermal strain in 28 asymptomatic subjects during diagnostic movements, while …
Privacy Within Autonomous Vehicle Cameras, Joshua Montgomery
Privacy Within Autonomous Vehicle Cameras, Joshua Montgomery
Honors Theses
In recent years, cameras have become ubiquitous in daily life, constantly surveilling, and taking in information. This leads to a potential security risk of the invasion in one’s privacy without their knowledge or any ability to prevent the privacy threat. While cameras alone are an issue, they are often only in locations where a user has some expectation of a loss of privacy, such as public locations with security systems. However, systems that rely on cameras to operate correctly, including autonomous vehicles, are becoming a more prominently used technology while often appearing in places where an average person has some …
Adaptive Social Distancing Strategies For Controlling Infection Inequality In Emerging Infectious Diseases, Asma Azizi, Caner Kazanci, Sunmi Lee
Adaptive Social Distancing Strategies For Controlling Infection Inequality In Emerging Infectious Diseases, Asma Azizi, Caner Kazanci, Sunmi Lee
Faculty Articles
People fare in outbreaks of emerging infections based on social factors shaping their exposure and vulnerability to the virus. This different exposure cause a disproportionate share of prevalence among people with various socioeconomic statuses. Therefore, socioeconomic-based control strategies are needed to control the discrepancy in prevalence among socioeconomic groups. We propose and analyze a SIR mathematical model that is grouped based on individuals' income level (representing socioeconomic status). For the model's parameter, we use properties of a real-world social network of individuals residing in New Orleans, Louisiana. We then distribute the social distancing practice among different groups to minimize a …

Soft Robot Trajectory Generation: Enabling Soft Robot Arms To Reliably And Effectively Perform Real World Tasks Through Optimization, Haley P. Sanders
Soft Robot Trajectory Generation: Enabling Soft Robot Arms To Reliably And Effectively Perform Real World Tasks Through Optimization, Haley P. Sanders
Theses and Dissertations
The robotic platform presented in this thesis is underdamped with high inertia and can store potential energy in its compliant joints, making it ideal for many different types of real-world tasks for which traditional rigid-robots are ill-suited. Some real-world tasks suited to soft robots include high impact tasks like hammering a nail into a wall or moving heavy objects with other robot or human teammates while using relatively little power. Some of the same characteristics which make soft robots useful, such as their underdamped, highly compliant joints, also make motion planning and control for soft robots difficult. In this thesis, …
Measurements Of The Sunyaev- Zel'dovich Effect In A Herschel- Spire Survey Of Galaxy Clusters, Ryan Wills
Measurements Of The Sunyaev- Zel'dovich Effect In A Herschel- Spire Survey Of Galaxy Clusters, Ryan Wills
Theses
As the largest gravitationally bound objects in the modern universe, galaxy clusters are excellent environments for studying the large-scale structure and evolution of matter in the cosmos. The environments of galaxy clusters change significantly over time from sites of intense star formation at z ~ 2-4 to mostly quenched objects with very little star formation in the current epoch. During this evolution, galaxy clusters also establish an intra-cluster medium (ICM) of hot plasma, which is typically firmly in place by a redshift of z ~ 1. The properties of the ICM are intimately tied to the formation history of the …
In What Ways Does The Proliferation Of Neoliberal Reform Initiatives (Nclb) Perpetuate The Marginalization Of Students In Urban Inner-City Schools? A Critical Discourse Analysis On Supplemental Education Services (Ses) And Adequate Yearly Progress (Ayp) In Izones Schools Cohorts 1 And 2., Rodney Jarrell Rowan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) has been cited as the pinnacle of the high-stakes accountability movement. NCLB required all students (subgroups) in public education to achieve 100% proficiency in reading and mathematics by 2014 on individual state-mandated standardized tests. The federal government authorized each state the right to define the measures that constituted proficiency (USDOE, 2002, NCLB ACT, Section 1111(2) B). This study revealed how the proliferation of neoliberal reform initiatives perpetuates the marginalization of urban inner-city school students. Under the guise of student subgroups, NCLB labeled students by race and ethnicity, academic status, and social identity. The …

The intermittent fasting diet has a historical past, but recently, it has regained popularity as a weight loss strategy for the general public. Athletes have also picked up this specialized diet in search of a competitive edge. There are ample studies testing athletes of all levels, but most do not include females or report sex-specific results. This systematic review aimed to identify current research on the effects of intermittent fasting in the understudied population of female athletes. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, a comprehensive search was conducted in three databases, including PubMed, Cochrane, …
High Temperature Materials From Bis-Ortho-Diynylarene (Boda)-Derived Resins And Perfluorocyclobutyl (Pfcb) Aryl Ether Polymers, Ernesto Isaac Borrego
High Temperature Materials From Bis-Ortho-Diynylarene (Boda)-Derived Resins And Perfluorocyclobutyl (Pfcb) Aryl Ether Polymers, Ernesto Isaac Borrego
Theses and Dissertations
This work expands the current understanding of materials chemistry and engineering capabilities of two synthetic platforms: 1.) bis-ortho-diynylarenes (BODA) and 2.) trifluorovinylaryl ethers (TFVE). Each platform possesses a unique chemistry which paradoxically enables the development of high-performance materials therefrom while simultaneously retaining exceptional melt and solution processability. Leveraging the apparent dichotomy in properties (performance/processability) obtainable from these two synthetics platforms, we have pursued and achieved a practical approach to high-temperature resistant materials with an immense potential for technology transfer and commercialization:
1.) BODA-derived resins (BDR) constitute a versatile platform of melt-processable resins capable of rapidly producing high performance …
Radiative Alpha Capture On Carbon-12, Ling Gan
Radiative Alpha Capture On Carbon-12, Ling Gan
Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, we used Effective Field Theory (EFT) to calculate the radiative ALPHA capture on 12C . This reaction is considered the “holy grail” in nuclear astrophysics because it determines the relevant abundance of 16O and 12C . We considered the E1 transition from initial p-wave at energy around the Gamow energy EG =0.3MeV.The theoretical formula for the cross section is obtained by fitting the EFT parameters to the phase shift and S-factor data. We find the Effective Range Expansion (ERE) parameters describing the ALPHA-wave phase shift are fine tuned. The shallow bound state and the resonance ALPHA-wave …
The Experiences Of Teachers In Predominantly Black Schools, Kennetra Smith
The Experiences Of Teachers In Predominantly Black Schools, Kennetra Smith
Theses and Dissertations
Teachers want to be in schools where their identities are authentically affirmed. However, some educators in predominantly Black schools perceive that they are not always afforded the same level of value and respect as their colleagues in mostly White or mixed schools. Instead, teachers in predominantly Black schools seem to have experiences associated with frustrations that often go unheard of or dismissed for various reasons. Schools with predominantly Black student populations are often associated with challenges in retaining teachers, commonly referred to as teacher retention or teacher turnover. This turnover can have an impact on the academic progress of the …

Development Of An Automated Delivery System To Apply Copper Sulfate Crystals Using Precision Dry Fertilizer Application Technology, Kevin Charles Wise
Theses and Dissertations
The digenetic trematode, Bolbophorus damnificus, poses a substantial threat to catfish aquaculture, causing significant economic losses. Infestations lead to suppressed feed consumption, secondary bacterial infections and poor production performance. Survey data reveals widespread infestation in the in the southeastern United States. Current control strategies involve the application of a concentrated copper sulfate solution to reduce snail populations which serve as the first intermediate host of the trematode life cycle. This study aimed to improve treatment efficacy by developing a granular copper sulfate application system. A modified Gandy fertilizer applicator, equipped with a programmable control system, demonstrated accurate distribution of copper …
Sign-Symmetry And Frustration Index In Signed Graphs, Abdulaziz Alotaibi
Sign-Symmetry And Frustration Index In Signed Graphs, Abdulaziz Alotaibi
Theses and Dissertations
A graph in which every edge is labeled positive or negative is called a signed graph. We determine the number of ways to sign the edges of the McGee graph with exactly two negative edges up to switching isomorphism. We characterize signed graphs that are both sign-symmetric and have a frustration index of 1. We prove some results about which signed graphs on complete multipartite graphs have frustration indices 2 and 3. In the final part, we derive the relationship between the frustration index and the number of parts in a sign-symmetric signed graph on complete multipartite graphs.

As Internet of Things (IoT) becomes increasingly integrated into our every day lives, we widen our attack surface and expose more of our personal lives to risk. In the same way the Human Immune System (HIS) safeguards our physical self, a similar solution is needed to safeguard our digital self. This thesis presents the Artificial Immune inspired Intrusion Detection System (AIS-IDS), an IDS modeled after the HIS. This thesis proposes an architecture for AIS-IDS, instantiates an AIS-IDS model …
Identifying The Shortest Log Trucking Routes And Optimizing Those Constrained By Low-Weight Bridges In Mississippi, Swagat Attreya
Identifying The Shortest Log Trucking Routes And Optimizing Those Constrained By Low-Weight Bridges In Mississippi, Swagat Attreya
Theses and Dissertations
Timber haulage in Mississippi incurs the greatest portion of logging expenses because of a myriad of closed and posted (restricted) bridges. This study utilized Dijkstra's algorithm method in ArcGIS Pro to derive 129 feasible shortest optimal trucking routes between 46 harvest sites and 32 softwood sawmills in Mississippi. Among these routes, 30 of them had restricted bridges along the way; however, only 13 viable alternative routes were identified due to distance and weight restrictions. The additional trucking distance for alternative routes ranged between 1.5 to 12.9 miles, whose effect on transportation cost was determined using a Mixed Integer Linear Programming …

Investigation And Control Of Görtler Vortices In High-Speed Flows, Omar Es-Sahli
Investigation And Control Of Görtler Vortices In High-Speed Flows, Omar Es-Sahli
Theses and Dissertations
High-amplitude freestream turbulence and surface roughness elements can excite a laminar boundary-layer flow sufficiently enough to cause streamwise-oriented vortices to develop. These vortices resemble elongated streaks having alternate spanwise variations of the streamwise velocity. Following the transient growth phase, the fully developed vortex structures downstream undergo an inviscid secondary instability mechanism and, ultimately, transition to turbulence. This mechanism becomes much more complicated in high-speed boundary layer flows due to compressibility and thermal effects, which become more significant for higher Mach numbers. In this research, we formulate and test an optimal control algorithm to suppress the growth rate of the aforementioned …
