Advances In Off-Resonance Distortion Correction For Echo Planar Imaging, Andrew Nathan Van
Advances In Off-Resonance Distortion Correction For Echo Planar Imaging, Andrew Nathan Van
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Functional MRI (fMRI) data, acquired through echo-planar imaging (EPI), are consistently distorted by main (B0) magnetic field inhomogeneities which are driven by differences in tissue susceptibility. Traditionally, these distortions are corrected using separately acquired field map data, which provide an estimate of the B0 inhomogeneity. However, factors such as head position changes during scans, corrupted field maps due to movement, or even the absence of field map data can impede this correction process. In this work, we present two new solutions to address these challenges and evaluated them using several quality metrics (Chapter 2). First, Synth, a field map-less correction …

Manganese (Mn) oxides are strong oxidants that are ubiquitous in soils and can oxidize redox-active metals, including chromium (Cr). In soil environments, trivalent chromium (Cr(III)) is a benign, immobile micronutrient, whereas the hexavalent Cr(VI) form is present as a highly mobile, toxic chromate oxyanion. Although many studies have characterized the capacity of Mn(III/IV) oxides to oxidize Cr(III) to toxic Cr(VI), the oxidative capacity of Mn oxides in the presence of potentially passivating soil constituents, specifically reduced soluble iron (Fe(II)aq), remains unresolved. We hypothesized that chemical processes at redox interfaces, such as diffusion-limited environments within soil aggregates, can lead to decreased …

Georgia Journal of Science
Hox genes are evolutionarily conserved developmental regulatory genes that function, in part, to pattern the anterior-posterior (AP) axis of organs and organ systems during animal embryonic development. Hoxa5, specifically, is shown to be expressed in the spinal cord, somites, or transient compartments giving rise to the vertebrae and ribs, developing gut, lungs, and limbs of the mouse (Mus musculus). The cis-regulatory elements (CREs), or short DNA sequences, that direct Hoxa5 expression in these embryonic domains have been mapped and functionally tested in the mouse as well. Similar Hoxa5 expression patterns have been observed in chicken ( …

Multi-messenger astrophysics combines observations from multiple instruments to study transient astrophysical phenomena, many occurring at seconds-level timescales. To identify and precisely localize these events in the sky, current systems often search through extensive sensor data, requiring resource-intensive computation to achieve results on the timescale of the events themselves. We seek to reduce computational requirements so as to perform real-time event localization with limited computational resources suitable for an orbital platform. This work studies the performance of a computational pipeline for real-time gamma-ray burst (GRB) detection and localization aboard the Antarctic Demonstrator for the Advanced Particle-astro-physics Telescope (ADAPT), a balloon-borne prototype …

In dynamic networks, where continuous topological changes are prevalent, it becomes paramount to find and update different graph properties without the computational burden of recalculating from the ground up. However finding or updating a multi-objective shortest path (MOSP) in such a network is challenging, as it involves simultaneously optimizing multiple (conflicting) objectives. In light of this, our paper focuses on shortest path search and proposes parallel algorithms tailored specifically for large incremental graphs. We first present an efficient algorithm that updates the single-objective shortest path (SOSP) whenever a new set of edges are introduced. Leveraging this SOSP update algorithm, we …
