Spectrophotometric Quantification Of Paracetamol And Tramadol Hydrochloride By Chemometric Calibration Methods, Faysal Seli̇moğlu, Nermi̇n Pinarcik

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The results of UV spectrophotometric analysis were analysed using partial least squares (PLS) and principal component regression (PCR) techniques to allow simultaneous evaluation of tramadol hydrochloride (TRA) and p-acetaminophen (PAR) in tablets. A calibration set of 16 mixtures, each containing PAR and TRA in various amounts, was created using a 24-full fractional design. The absorbance data set for the calibration set were obtained between 215?280 nm (?? = 0.1 nm). Subsequently, the concentration and absorbance sets were used to generate PCR and PLS calibrations. The ratio spectra- first derivative method was devised as a solution to the same problem to …

Mysci Impact: Student Outcomes Overview, Maia Elkana, Alison Brockhouse Jan 2023

Mysci Impact: Student Outcomes Overview, Maia Elkana, Alison Brockhouse

Institute for School Partnership: Research & Publications

In 2016, Missouri released the Missouri Learning Standards (MLS) for science based on the NGSS. Like the NGSS, the MLS diverges from previous approaches to K-12 science education, shifting the burden placed on teachers to change their classroom practices to schools to provide materials, supplies, and support. Despite the increased need for time and materials to meet more rigorous standards, schools across the country have decreased the resources allocated to and time spent on science instruction, which has negative implications for student achievement. As a design-based implementation research-practice partnership (RPP), the mySci program is regularly updated to reflect advances in …

BACKGROUND: Demand for head and neck cancer (HNC) radiotherapy data in algorithmic development has prompted increased image dataset sharing. Medical images must comply with data protection requirements so that re-use is enabled without disclosing patient identifiers. Defacing, i.e., the removal of facial features from images, is often considered a reasonable compromise between data protection and re-usability for neuroimaging data. While defacing tools have been developed by the neuroimaging community, their acceptability for radiotherapy applications have not been explored. Therefore, this study systematically investigated the impact of available defacing algorithms on HNC organs at risk (OARs).

METHODS: A publicly available dataset …

Comparison Of Permafrost Thaw-Related Changes To Hydrological Response And Land Cover In Subarctic Peatland-Dominated Landscapes, Mikhail Mack Jan 2023

Comparison Of Permafrost Thaw-Related Changes To Hydrological Response And Land Cover In Subarctic Peatland-Dominated Landscapes, Mikhail Mack

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The hydrological implications of discontinuous permafrost thaw in peatland-dominated basins are not well understood. While there is evidence suggesting that permafrost-thaw-driven land cover change increases annual runoff and the runoff ratio in the Taiga Plains of northwestern Canada, few studies have evaluated the impact on small to medium-sized basins (< 105 km2) outside this ecoregion. Here, we assess runoff, runoff ratio, and precipitation trends for 34 peatland-dominated basins, of which 28 are in the discontinuous and sporadic permafrost zones and 6 in adjacent permafrost-free environments. We calculated annual and monthly trends between 1970 and 2016 using the Mann-Kendall …

Winter Dynamics Of Storm Water Management Ponds And Winter Tolerance In Three Aquatic Plant Species, Patrick Strzalkowski Jan 2023

Winter Dynamics Of Storm Water Management Ponds And Winter Tolerance In Three Aquatic Plant Species, Patrick Strzalkowski

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The vast majority of the research into the performance of stormwater management ponds (SWMPs) has been performed in warm regions or during the warmer seasons in temperate regions. It is presumed that SWMPs are inactive in the winter as any potential stormwater is trapped in snow and ice. The main goal of this thesis was to test this presumption and to study the dynamics and performance of three SWMPs during the winter. Remote water level loggers were installed into the three SWMPs and daily grab samples from the influents and effluents were taken and analyzed for total phosphorus (TP), chloride, …

Controls On Thermokarst Lake Water Balances In The Inuvik - Tuktoyaktuk Region, Evan J. Wilcox Jan 2023

Controls On Thermokarst Lake Water Balances In The Inuvik - Tuktoyaktuk Region, Evan J. Wilcox

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

There are tens of thousands of thermokarst lakes in the Inuvik-Tuktoyaktuk region, located in the northwest corner of the Northwest Territories, Canada. These lakes formed following the last glacial period in areas where ice-rich permafrost thawed and created depressions in the landscape. The Inuvik-Tuktoyaktuk region is one of the fastest warming regions in the world, leading to changing precipitation patterns, permafrost thaw and deciduous shrub expansion, all of which are affecting the water balance of thermokarst lakes. During the past several decades, lake expansion and contraction have been observed in response to fluctuations in precipitation. While these changes in lake …

Contrasting Seasonal Cycling Of Arsenic In A Series Of Subarctic Shield Lakes With Different Morphometric Properties, Jeremy Harbinson Jan 2023

Contrasting Seasonal Cycling Of Arsenic In A Series Of Subarctic Shield Lakes With Different Morphometric Properties, Jeremy Harbinson

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The subarctic shield near Yellowknife, Northwest Territories (NWT), is populated with thousands of small lakes (<1.5 km2) and several large lakes. Historic mining activities in the region have left a legacy of environmental impacts and widespread arsenic (As) contamination in both aquatic and terrestrial environments. In particular, several small subarctic lakes near Yellowknife have been previously documented to be contaminated with high levels of As. Subarctic lakes are characterized by seasonal ice-cover that can persist for more than half of the year, yet little is known about the under-ice spatial and seasonal dynamics of As cycling. The objective of …

Distinctiveness And Similarity: How The Sub-Trait Facets Of The Big Five Self-Organize To Create Personality Types, Jonathan Thiessen Jan 2023

Distinctiveness And Similarity: How The Sub-Trait Facets Of The Big Five Self-Organize To Create Personality Types, Jonathan Thiessen

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The belief that people can be placed within a personality typology has persisted for millennia. At least as far back as Hippocrates (ca. 460 BCE–370 BCE) people were believed to be of a kind based on the four humors—blood, yellow bile, black bile, and phlegm. Since then, there have been many conceptions of personality typologies. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and the Enneagram of Personality are likely the most well-known personality typologies among the general public. Despite their wide public usage, neither typology boasts strong empirical support. However, psychology continues to investigate personality for evidence of a typology of personality. In …

Assessing The Most Vulnerable Subgroup To Type Ii Diabetes Associated With Statin Usage: Evidence From Electronic Health Record Data, Xinzhou Guo, Waverly Wei, Molei Liu, Tianxi Cai, Chong Wu, Jingshen Wang

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

There have been increased concerns that the use of statins, one of the most commonly prescribed drugs for treating coronary artery disease, is potentially associated with the increased risk of new-onset Type II diabetes (T2D). Nevertheless, to date, there is no robust evidence supporting as to whether and what kind of populations are indeed vulnerable for developing T2D after taking statins. In this case study, leveraging the biobank and electronic health record data in the Partner Health System, we introduce a new data analysis pipeline and a novel statistical methodology that address existing limitations by (i) designing a rigorous causal …

Interlace Polynomials Of 4n-Snowflake Graphs, Jyoti Champanerkar, Aihua Li Jan 2023

Interlace Polynomials Of 4n-Snowflake Graphs, Jyoti Champanerkar, Aihua Li

Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

In this paper, we study the interlace polynomial of a special graph with n vertices, called 4nsnowflake graph. It is similar as the friendship graph Fn of n vertices, which is made of n 3-cycles sharing one center vertex. In stead of 3-cycles, the 4n-snowflake graph Qn is constructed by gluing n 4-cycles to one center vertex. We describe certain properties of such graphs, provide recursive and explicit formulas for the interlace polynomials, and give some properties of such polynomials such as special values and patterns for certain coefficients.

Efficient High Order Ensemble For Fluid Flow, John Carter Jan 2023

Efficient High Order Ensemble For Fluid Flow, John Carter

Doctoral Dissertations

"This thesis proposes efficient ensemble-based algorithms for solving the full and reduced Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations. The proposed ensemble methods require solving only one linear system with multiple right-hand sides for different realizations, reducing computational cost and simulation time. Four algorithms utilize a Generalized Positive Auxiliary Variable (GPAV) approach and are demonstrated to be second-order accurate and unconditionally stable with respect to the system energy through comprehensive stability analyses and error tests. Two algorithms make use of Artificial Compressibility (AC) to update pressure and a solenoidal constraint for the magnetic field. Numerical simulations are provided to illustrate theoretical results and demonstrate …

Advances In Differentially Methylated Region Detection And Cure Survival Models, Daniel Ahmed Alhassan Jan 2023

Advances In Differentially Methylated Region Detection And Cure Survival Models, Daniel Ahmed Alhassan

Doctoral Dissertations

"This dissertation focuses on two areas of statistics: DNA methylation and survival analysis. The first part of the dissertation pertains to the detection of differentially methylated regions in the human genome. The varying distribution of gaps between succeeding genomic locations, which are represented on the microarray used to quantify methylation, makes it challenging to identify regions that have differential methylation. This emphasizes the need to properly account for the correlation in methylation shared by nearby locations within a specific genomic distance. In this work, a normalized kernel-weighted statistic is proposed to obtain an optimal amount of "information" from neighboring locations …

Introduction Of A Variable Inductance Transformer For The Design Of Resonant Power Converters, Angshuman Sharma Jan 2023

Introduction Of A Variable Inductance Transformer For The Design Of Resonant Power Converters, Angshuman Sharma

Doctoral Dissertations

"Magnetic integration is a hot topic in power electronics that concerns the use of a transformer's leakage and magnetizing inductances purposefully in isolated power electronic converters, thereby giving the opportunity to save the cost and footprint of any additional inductor. This is of prime interest, especially in CLLLC resonant converters which require up to three inductors. For a complete integration of these inductances, the concept of a variable inductance transformer (VIT) is introduced in this thesis. A VIT is an adaptive magnetic structure that facilitates an easy adjustment of both magnetizing and leakage inductances to meet their desired values. However, …

Near-Ir Spectroscopic Analysis Of The Primary Volatile Composition Of Long And Short-Period Comets, Younas Khan Jan 2023

Near-Ir Spectroscopic Analysis Of The Primary Volatile Composition Of Long And Short-Period Comets, Younas Khan

Doctoral Dissertations

"Comets are among the most well-preserved objects that formed in the protosolar nebula ∼4.5 Gyr ago. Hence, they are important for understanding various aspects of the formation, evolution, and habitability of the solar system. Multiple primary volatiles (molecules directly sublimating into the coma from the nucleus) emit via rovibrational transitions in the near-IR, providing opportunities to calculate their abundances. To date, only ∼50 comets have been characterized for their primary volatiles, with the short-period Jupiter-family comets (JFCs) being significantly underrepresented. In contrast, hundreds of comets have been sampled at optical/UV wavelengths, primarily for the composition of daughter species, leading to …

Promoting Enhanced Decision-Making And Proactive Management For Modularization In The Construction Industry Using Risk-Based Approach, Analytical Hierarchy Process, And Graph Theory, Mohamad Abdul Nabi Jan 2023

Promoting Enhanced Decision-Making And Proactive Management For Modularization In The Construction Industry Using Risk-Based Approach, Analytical Hierarchy Process, And Graph Theory, Mohamad Abdul Nabi

Doctoral Dissertations

"Modularization is an approach that can potentially mitigate many of the current construction industry’s challenges. Despite the documented advantages of modularization, the industry is still not able to capitalize on its full potential and benefits. The latter is due to the outdated decision-making models that may not reflect the multiple factors involved in modular construction, the unique source of risks associated with modular construction methods, need for continuous improvement, and complex contractual requirements and disputes. As such, the goal is to promote the use of modularization in the construction industry by enhancing decision-making and proactive risk management. The associated objectives …

Essays On Conditional Heteroscedastic Time Series Models With Asymmetry, Long Memory, And Structural Changes, K C M R Anjana Bandara Yatawara Jan 2023

Essays On Conditional Heteroscedastic Time Series Models With Asymmetry, Long Memory, And Structural Changes, K C M R Anjana Bandara Yatawara

Doctoral Dissertations

"The volatility of asset returns is usually time-varying, necessitating the introduction of models with a conditional heteroskedastic variance structure. In this dissertation, several existing formulations, motivated by the Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroskedastic (GARCH) type models, are further generalized to accommodate more dynamic features of asset returns such as asymmetry, long memory, and structural breaks. First, we introduce a hybrid structure that combines short-memory asymmetric Glosten, Jagannathan, and Runkle (GJR) formulation and the long-memory fractionally integrated GARCH (FIGARCH) process for modeling financial volatility. This formulation not only can model volatility clusters and capture asymmetry but also considers the characteristic of long …

Recurrent Event Data Analysis With Mismeasured Covariates, Ravinath Alahakoon Mudiyanselage Jan 2023

Recurrent Event Data Analysis With Mismeasured Covariates, Ravinath Alahakoon Mudiyanselage

Doctoral Dissertations

"Consider a study with n units wherein every unit is monitored for the occurrence of an event that can recur with random end of monitoring. At each recurrence, p concomitant variables associated to the event recurrence are recorded with q (q ≤ p) collected with errors. Of interest in this dissertation is the estimation of the regression parameters of event time regression models accounting for the covariates. To circumvent the problem of bias and consistency associated with model's parameter estimation in the presence of measurement errors, we propose inference for corrected estimating functions with well-behaved roots under additive measurement errors …

Frederick Douglass And The Original Originalists, Bradley Rebeiro Jan 2023

Frederick Douglass And The Original Originalists, Bradley Rebeiro

Faculty Scholarship

Constitutional scholars incessantly grapple over the significance of the Constitution’s original meaning. More specifically, they are preoccupied with, on the one hand, what that meaning is (if such meaning exists) and, on the other hand, the exact nature of that meaning’s authority (if any) over the Constitution and its interpreters. But this debate is hardly novel. In fact, one of the most compelling voices in U.S. history was immersed in similar debates and, out of the constitutional sparring of his time, forged an arresting theory of constitutional interpretation. Frederick Douglass, once a fierce opponent of the U.S. Constitution, evolved into …

Scale-Free Behavioral Dynamics Directly Linked With Scale-Free Cortical Dynamics, Sabrina A. Jones, Jacob H. Barfield, V. Kindler Norman, Woodrow L. Shew

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Naturally occurring body movements and collective neural activity both exhibit complex dynamics, often with scale-free, fractal spatiotemporal structure. Scale-free dynamics of both brain and behavior are important because each is associated with functional benefits to the organism. Despite their similarities, scale-free brain activity and scale-free behavior have been studied separately, without a unified explanation. Here, we show that scale-free dynamics of mouse behavior and neurons in the visual cortex are strongly related. Surprisingly, the scale-free neural activity is limited to specific subsets of neurons, and these scale-free subsets exhibit stochastic winner-take-all competition with other neural subsets. This observation is inconsistent …
