Solving Electromagnetic Inverse Scattering Problems In Inhomogeneous Media By Deep Convolutional Encoder-Decoder Structure, Huan Huan Zhang, He Ming Yao, Lijun Jiang, Michael Ng

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This communication proposes a novel deep learning (DL) approach to solve electromagnetic inverse scattering (EMIS) problems in inhomogeneous media. The conventional approaches for solving inhomogeneous EMIS problems generally have to consider inhomogeneous Green’s functions or conduct approximation operations to media, which inevitably introduces various challenges, including complex mathematical derivation, high computation cost, unavoidable nonlinearity, and even strong ill-posedness. To avoid these challenges, we propose a DL approach based on the complex-valued deep convolutional neural networks (DConvNets), which comprise the deep convolutional encoder–decoder (DCED) structure. Its training data are collected based on the simple synthetic dataset. While the scattered fields received …

Lifelong Deep Learning-Based Control Of Robot Manipulators, Irfan Ganie, Jagannathan Sarangapani Jan 2023

Lifelong Deep Learning-Based Control Of Robot Manipulators, Irfan Ganie, Jagannathan Sarangapani

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This study proposes a lifelong deep learning control scheme for robotic manipulators with bounded disturbances. This scheme involves the use of an online tunable deep neural network (DNN) to approximate the unknown nonlinear dynamics of the robot. The control scheme is developed by using a singular value decomposition-based direct tracking error-driven approach, which is utilized to derive the weight update laws for the DNN. To avoid catastrophic forgetting in multi-task scenarios and to ensure lifelong learning (LL), a novel online LL scheme based on elastic weight consolidation is included in the DNN weight-tuning laws. Our results demonstrate that the resulting …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Recently, the utilization of Radio Frequency (RF) devices has increased exponentially over numerous vertical platforms. This rise has led to an abundance of Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) continues to plague RF systems today. The continued crowding of the RF spectrum makes RFI efficient and lightweight mitigation critical. Detecting and localizing the interfering signals is the foremost step for mitigating RFI concerns. Addressing these challenges, we propose a novel and lightweight approach, namely RaFID, to detect and locate the RFI by incorporating deep neural networks (DNNs) and statistical analysis via batch-wise mean aggregation and standard deviation (SD) calculations. RaFID investigates the …

OTA (Over-The-Air) Testing is Essential for Developing Assisted and Autonomous Driving Systems in Vehicles, as It Plays a Crucial Role in the Localization, Perception, and Intelligent Driving Capabilities of ICVs (Intelligent Connected Vehicles). Automotive Antennas, Typically Much Smaller in Size Than the Vehicle itself and Can Be Located in Various Positions, Require Spherical Near-Field Measurement for OTA Testing. While There Are Established Standards for OTA Testing Methods and Uncertainties for Mobile Devices, Base Stations, and Satellite Components, There Are Still Many Challenges in the OTA Testing of Automotive Systems. These Challenges, specifically in SISO (Single Input Single Output) and MIMO …

Towards Robust Consensus For Intelligent Decision-Making In Iot Blockchain Networks, Charles Rawlins, S. (Sarangapani) Jagannathan Jan 2023

Towards Robust Consensus For Intelligent Decision-Making In Iot Blockchain Networks, Charles Rawlins, S. (Sarangapani) Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Distributed consensus is the core aspect of blockchain protocol security design. Recent protocols like IOTA have improved concurrency and scalability over Proof-of-work (PoW) with Bitcoin but have core design decisions that are inefficient for limited devices and do not take advantage of previous network experience to reduce calculations. This work proposes the first blockchain consensus protocol based on active machine-learning decisions, called Proof-of-history (PoH). PoH is setup as a distributed reinforcement-learning task for monitoring classification and training of blockchain transactions with an inner deep classifier. Early theoretical analysis and simulations show that PoH is robust to uncoordinated byzantine attacks through …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Scalability is essential for next generation blockchain technology to integrate with large mobile networks like Internet of Things (IoT). The IOTA distributed ledger protocol has combined transaction generation and verification to address this, but at the expense of increased reliance on connectivity to resolve conflicts with a novel ledger data structure. Intelligent Ledger Construction (ILC) was proposed as an auditable lightweight reinforcement-learning scheme to address this constraint with proposal of local conflict resolution with machine-learning classification. This effort presents an improved reliability reward model to enhance training for ILC and further reduce adversarial gaming and resource usage. Testing this revision …

Accelerated Statistical Eye Diagram Estimation Method For Efficient Signal Integrity Analysis, Junyong Park, Youngwoo Kim, Donghyun Kim

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This article proposes an accelerated statistical eye diagram estimation method for efficient signal integrity (SI) analysis. An eye diagram is a critical metric in the SI analysis, however obtaining an eye diagram is time-consuming in simulation. The required time might be a few weeks depending on the complexity. Because the eye diagram is obtained by superposition of the received waveforms. Statistical eye diagram estimation methods were proposed to make the eye diagram acquisition efficient, however, it still has a limited improvement due to a large number of convolution operations. To address this limitation, the proposed method includes two approaches: (i) …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

High latency in teleoperation has a significant negative impact on operator performance. While deep learning has revolutionized many domains recently, it has not previously been applied to teleoperation enhancement. We propose a novel approach to predict video frames deep into the future using neural networks informed by synthetically generated optical flow information. This can be employed in teleoperated robotic systems that rely on video feeds for operator situational awareness. We have used the image-to-image translation technique as a basis for the prediction of future frames. The Pix2Pix conditional generative adversarial network (cGAN) has been selected as a base network. Optical …

Multivariate Cross-Validation And Measures Of Accuracy And Precision, Ute Mueller, Sangga Rima Roman Selia, Raimon Tolosana-Delgado

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Cross-validation and performance measures are standard components in the evaluation of a geostatistical model. These are well established in the univariate case, but measures for multivariate geostatistical modeling have not received as much attention. In the case of a single target variable, the univariate approaches remain valid, but in the fully multivariate case where a vector of variables needs to be estimated, the evaluation needs to be based on all estimates simultaneously. An extension of cross-validation and associated performance measures to the fully multivariate case is presented and discussed for the case of regionalized compositions. The method is demonstrated by …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Seagrass meadows are natural carbon storage hotspots at risk from global change threats, and their loss can result in the remineralization of soil carbon stocks and CO2 emissions fueling climate change. Here we used expert elicitation and empirical evidence to assess the risk of CO2 emissions from seagrass soils caused by multiple human-induced, biological and climate change threats. Judgments from 41 experts were synthesized into a seagrass CO2 emission risk score based on vulnerability factors (i.e., spatial scale, frequency, magnitude, resistance and recovery) to seagrass soil organic carbon stocks. Experts perceived that climate change threats (e.g., gradual ocean warming and …
