Machine Learning Techniques For Credit Card Fraud Detection, Amal Alamri Jan 2023

Machine Learning Techniques For Credit Card Fraud Detection, Amal Alamri

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Credit card fraudulent transactions are becoming an ever-growing problem in the financial market. There has been a rapid increase in the rate of fraudulent transactional activities in recent years producing considerable financial loss to many companies, organizations, and government agencies. These numbers are anticipated to increase in the near future and many scholars in this field are focused on detecting fraudulent transactions early on, using advanced Machine Learning techniques. However, credit card fraud transaction detection is not easy for two reasons: (I) fraudulent methods usually vary for each attempt, and (II) the dataset is extremely imbalanced with many more normal …

Design And Synthesis Of Acetyl Coa Synthetase-1 Inhibitors, Theodore Cormac Jones Jan 2023

Design And Synthesis Of Acetyl Coa Synthetase-1 Inhibitors, Theodore Cormac Jones

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Pathogenic fungi pose a severe threat to patients in developing countries. Although these fungi claim the lives of millions every year, modern healthcare is sorely lacking in ways to control them. This work will explore the development and synthesis of four series of compounds with potential antifungal activity via inhibition of ACS1. The first is based on a thienopyrimidine moiety and was discovered in a screen of compounds from the Hagen Group’s in-house compound library. Analogs in this series demonstrated some degree of improvement in activity over the lead compound, but they were held back by solubility issues and poor …

Simulations Of Electro-Optically Sampled Arbitrarily Shaped Electron Bunches For Wakefield Acceleratiors, Spencer Joseph Kelham Jan 2023

Simulations Of Electro-Optically Sampled Arbitrarily Shaped Electron Bunches For Wakefield Acceleratiors, Spencer Joseph Kelham

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The measurement and recording of terahertz (THz) electric fields is of specialinterest to particle-accelerator science, as the electric fields of temporally short rela- tivistic electron bunches have frequency components that extend into the THz range. A single-shot, non-destructive measurement of such fields can be made using THz time-domain spectroscopy and electro-optic sampling. At the Argonne Wakefield Ac- celerator, arbitrary electron-bunch shapes are being explored to enhance the efficiency of advanced wakefield-accelerator schemes. In this report, we develop a framework for numerically modeling an implementation of electro-optical sampling – dubbed phase-diversity electro-optic sampling [1] – and apply the model to understand …

Advancements In Engineered Nanomaterial Synthesis For Selective Oxygen Reduction Reaction Catalysts And Fundamental Electrochemical Studies Of Lead Acid Batteries, Jacob Kaelin Jan 2023

Advancements In Engineered Nanomaterial Synthesis For Selective Oxygen Reduction Reaction Catalysts And Fundamental Electrochemical Studies Of Lead Acid Batteries, Jacob Kaelin

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

It has long been known that the catalysis of water and its constituent elements could provide an effective means of storing and producing electricity. The deceptively simple process of producing electricity from Hydrogen and Oxygen is composed of two primary reactions, namely the Hydrogen Oxidation Reaction (HOR) and the Oxygen Reduction Reaction (ORR). While the HOR has largely been optimized on a variety of catalytic materials, the ORR has been plagued by sluggish kinetics and high overpotentials to the point where it is the bottleneck in implementing water catalysis-based technologies in practical scenarios. To help meet these challenges a bevy …

Measuring The Impact Of Youth Research In The Us Policy Documents, Miftahul Jannat Mokarrama

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

With the growing demand for aligning research with society, in recent years, researchers and policymakers have been unequivocal in increasing research use in the policy-making process. Integrating research into policy formulation not only results in more effective policies but also allows researchers to extend the reach and influence of their work to a broaderand more diverse audience. In the US, as youth comprise a substantial portion of the population, their perspectives, needs, and aspirations must be understood and addressed in policymaking. Therefore, in this thesis, we assessed the impact of youth-focused research on US policy documents using state-of-the-art pre-trained Large …

A State Space Modeling Approach To Eeg Artifact Removal, Patrick B. Rafael Jan 2023

A State Space Modeling Approach To Eeg Artifact Removal, Patrick B. Rafael

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

In this work, a state space modeling approach is applied to an Electroencephalography(EEG) recording for the purpose of artifact removal, and is compared against Independent Components Analysis (ICA), the current gold standard. Issues of model identifiability are touched on, and Hamiltonian Monte Carlo (HMC) is used to estimate a linear non-Gaussian state space model. Results show that estimating such a model is a nontrivial matter, and the full utility of the state space approach remains to be demonstrated.

Exploring The Relationships Between Student Perceptions And Educational Technology Utilization In Higher Education, Ana-Paula Correia, Karly Good

Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)

This study examines the perceptions of educational technology use among college students at a small liberal arts university in the United States. Using institutional data analytics, 34,480 survey responses were analyzed to understand how students perceive the use of technology in the classroom and its relationship with teaching methods, progress on learning objectives, and course features. Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were conducted, revealing a positive correlation between the use of educational technology and effective teaching methods, progress on learning objectives, and overall satisfaction with instructors and courses. However, it is important to note that the study is correlational in …

Using The Best - Worst Scale To Assess The Relative Impact Of These Behaviors On Other Passengers On The Same Flight: The Disruptive Passenger Behavior, Quynh Thi Nhu Phan, Vi Tran, Nhan Huu Huynh, Thao Phuong Huynh, Duc Nhan Ho

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

A method called the best-worst scaling method is proposed to overcome these problems by asking respondents to make tradeoffs among the variables being assessed. This paper raises issues in respect of supplementing and developing a block of disruptive behaviors exhibited by passengers during flights and assesses the impact of these behaviors on other passengers. To illustrate the proposed method and evaluate its performance, we surveyed 240 passengers, and data from 203 survey samples were analyzed. The data analysis results revealed three behaviors that were considered the most disruptive, including (1) Threatening and causing distress, (2) Harassment and disrupting public order, …

Concept Connectivity: An Educational And Research Framework For Scientific Learning In Optics, Photonics, And Electronic Education, Benjamin Dingel, John Gabriel C. Rivera, Francesca De Guzman Palabrica, Clint Dominic Bennett

Physics Faculty Publications

We present a novel framework referred to as Concept Connectivity that aids in educating and engaging students by presenting the topic of the Special Theory of Relativity (STR) in a coherent and unified manner. It uses different analogue implementations of the STR coming from seemingly distinct fields of study such as (i) Optics, (ii) Photonics, and (iii) Electronics to connect not only to the concepts of the STR but to the various concepts from these different fields. In these analogue implementations, the fundamental characteristics of the different STR phenomena can be mimicked in many different ways. Concept Connectivity has two …

Smartphone-Based Approach To Demonstrating Relativistic Aberration Of Light Using Electronic Circuit Analogues For Undergraduates In The Philippines, Samuel Martirez, June Capin, Shayne Venancio, Perine Bianzon, John Gabriel Rivera, Benjamin Dingel, Clint Dominic Bennett

Physics Faculty Publications

Previously, we demonstrated an electronic circuit analogue of one of Special Relativity's (SR) phenomena called the Relativistic Aberration of Light (RAL) (European Journal of Physics, 42, 015605, 2021), which describes the change in the angle an observer sees a light source relative to their direction of motion at relativistic speeds. It used typical bulky laboratory equipment such as (i) function generators, (ii) oscilloscopes, and (iii) power supplies together with our all-pass filter (APF)-based electronic circuit analogue to perform experiments. In this paper, we present a novel smartphone-based experimental set-up performing the same experiment, but we replace the bulky and expensive …

Commutative And 2-Divisible Subvarieties Of Rings Of Bol-Moufang Type, J.D. Phillips Jan 2023

Commutative And 2-Divisible Subvarieties Of Rings Of Bol-Moufang Type, J.D. Phillips

Journal Articles

In the two subvarieties of commutative not necessarily associative rings, and 2-divisible not necessarily associative rings, we show that the sixty Bol-Moufang identities determine exactly five subvarieties in each case, and we completely determine all inclusions and necessary counterexamples. The historically important nonassociative rings of octonions and sedenions may be used as counterexamples in our classification. We utilize both associator and linear forms of each Bol-Moufang identity. The results are analogous to the classification of varieties of loops or quasigroups of Bol-Moufang type (Phillips, Vojtěchovský-2005)

A Shifty Approach To Little Theorems, J.D. Phillips Jan 2023

A Shifty Approach To Little Theorems, J.D. Phillips

Journal Articles

Herein, we offer a gentle yet rigorous introduction to both modular arithmetic and the elementary combinatorics of the common shift mapping, culminating in self-contained and accessible proofs of various cases of a general Euler Totient Function Theorem, Fermat’s Little Theorem included. The reader may consider this an homage to T.P. Kirkman and W.S.B. Woolhouse for their pioneering work in elementary combinatorics [2], [3]. We recommend [1] both as a primer on the shift mapping and as an engaging example of elementary mathematics transmogrified.

Application Of Superdarn Assimilative Mapping Technique To Ts18 Plasma Convection Model, Chloe J. Baker Jan 2023

Application Of Superdarn Assimilative Mapping Technique To Ts18 Plasma Convection Model, Chloe J. Baker

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Specification of ionospheric convection over the entire high-latitude region using only measurements is desirable for space weather nowcasting but is not feasible. Instead, assimilative techniques are used to combine spatially sparse measurements with a complete background model. The Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN) Assimilative Mapping technique (SAM) is one such technique [Cousins et al., 2013a]. The SAM technique combines available line-of-sight velocity measurements from SuperDARN with a climatological high-latitude convection model producing a global solution of the electrostatic potential for a given period of interest (typically 1-2 minutes). The background model and velocity measurements are weighted according to each …

On The Relation Between Oscillation Of Solutions Of Differential Equations And Corresponding Equations On Time Scales, Olexandr Stanzhytskyi, Roza Uteshova, Victoriia Tsan, Zoia Khaletska Jan 2023

On The Relation Between Oscillation Of Solutions Of Differential Equations And Corresponding Equations On Time Scales, Olexandr Stanzhytskyi, Roza Uteshova, Victoriia Tsan, Zoia Khaletska

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

This paper studies oscillatory properties of solutions of a dynamic equation on the set of time scales $\mathbf{T}_\lambda$ provided that the graininess function $\mu_\lambda$ approaches zero as $\lambda\to 0$. We derived the conditions under which oscillation of solutions of differential equations implies that of solutions of the corresponding equations defined on time scales with the same initial data, and vice versa.

Notes On Totally Geodesic Foliations Of A Complete Semi-Riemannian Manifold, An Sook Shin, Hyelim Han, Hobum Kim

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, we prove that the orthogonal complement $\mathcal{F}^{\perp}$ of a totally geodesic foliation $\mathcal{F}$ on a complete semi-Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ satisfying a certain inequality between mixed sectional curvatures and the integrability tensor of $\mathcal{F}^{\perp}$ is totally geodesic. We also obtain conditions for the existence of totally geodesic foliations on a complete semi-Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ with bundle-like metric $g$.

Some Remarks On Parameterized Inequalities Involving Conformable Fractional Operators, Ci̇han Ünal, Fati̇h Hezenci̇, Hüseyi̇n Budak Jan 2023

Some Remarks On Parameterized Inequalities Involving Conformable Fractional Operators, Ci̇han Ünal, Fati̇h Hezenci̇, Hüseyi̇n Budak

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, we prove an identity for differentiable convex functions related to conformable fractional integrals. Moreover, some parameterized inequalities are established by using conformable fractional integrals. To be more precise, parameterized inequalities are obtained by taking advantage of the convexity, the Hölder inequality, and the power mean inequality. Furthermore, previous and new results are presented by using special cases of the obtained theorems.

The Normalized Miller-Ross Function And Its Geometric Properties, Khaled Mehrez

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

The main objective of this paper is to study certain geometric properties (like univalence, starlikeness, convexity, close-to-convexity) for the normalized Miller-Ross function. The various results, which we have established in the present investigation, are believed to be new, and their importance is illustrated by several interesting consequences and examples. Furthermore, some of the main results improve the corresponding results available in the literature [15].

A Calculus For Intuitionistic Fuzzy Values, Enes Yavuz Jan 2023

A Calculus For Intuitionistic Fuzzy Values, Enes Yavuz

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

We introduce $^\oplus$calculus and $^\otimes$calculus for intuitionistic fuzzy values and prove some basic theorems by using multiplicative calculus which has useful tools to represent the concepts of introduced calculi. Besides, we construct some isomorphic mappings to interpret the relationships between $^\oplus$calculus and $^\otimes$calculus. This paper reveals also new calculi for fuzzy sets in particular.

Atomic Systems In Krein Spaces, Osmin Ferrer Villar, Edilberto Arroyo Ortiz, José Naranjo Martínez

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In the present article, we establish a definition of atomic systems in the Krein spaces, specifically, we establish the fundamental tools of the theory of atomic systems in the formalism of the Krein spaces and give a complete characterization of them. We also show that the atomic systems do not depend on the decomposition of the Krein space.

The Set Of Arf Numerical Semigroups With Given Frobenius Number, María Ángeles Moreno-Frías, Jose Carlos Rosales Jan 2023

The Set Of Arf Numerical Semigroups With Given Frobenius Number, María Ángeles Moreno-Frías, Jose Carlos Rosales

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

A covariety is a nonempty family $C$ of numerical semigroups that satisfies a certain conditions. In this work we will show that if $F$ is a positive integer, then the set of Arf numerical semigroup with Frobenius number $F$, denoted by $(F)$, is a covatiety. The previous results will be used to give an algorithm which calculates the set $(F).$ Also we will see that if $X\subseteq S\backslash \Delta(F)$ for some $S\in (F),$ then there is the smallest element of $(F)$ containing $X.$

A Note On Half Of Some Med Semigroups Of Maximal Or Almost Maximal Length, Ahmet Çeli̇k Jan 2023

A Note On Half Of Some Med Semigroups Of Maximal Or Almost Maximal Length, Ahmet Çeli̇k

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this study, we have shown that numerical semigroups $M=<3,C+1,C+2>$ and $M=<3,C,C+2>$ have maximal or almost maximal length, with conductor $C$, where $C\equiv0(3)$ and $C\equiv2(3),$ respectively. We also examined whether half of these numerical semigroups were of maximal or almost maximal length.

The Systems Measurement Of Mammalian Biotas, Part Two, Charles H. Smith, Patrick Georges, Ngoc Nguyen Jan 2023

The Systems Measurement Of Mammalian Biotas, Part Two, Charles H. Smith, Patrick Georges, Ngoc Nguyen

Faculty/Staff Personal Papers

For a recent publication, the authors identified a seven-region model of mammal family distribution patterns, in which each unit contributes equally to the system’s overall statistical characteristics of diversity, despite its individual units having measurably different levels of diversity and endemism. This systemization presents a highly efficient descriptive model that can possibly be interpreted as a form of natural classification. An additional analysis of the same mode is described here, in which the seven-region model of the distribution of mammal families’ spatial affinities is shown to closely approach a most-probable-state arrangement, as assessed through combinatorics, raising some important questions about …

A Class Of Regression Models For Pairwise Comparisons Of Forensic Handwriting Comparison Systems, Cami M. Fuglsby Jan 2023

A Class Of Regression Models For Pairwise Comparisons Of Forensic Handwriting Comparison Systems, Cami M. Fuglsby

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Handwriting analysis is a complex field largely living in forensic science and the legal realm. One task of a forensic document examiner (FDE) may be to determine the writer(s) of handwritten documents. Automated identification systems (AIS) were built to aid FDEs in their examinations. Part of the uses of these AIS (such as FISH[5] [7],WANDA [6], CEDAR-FOX [17], and FLASHID®2) are tomeasure features about a handwriting sample and to provide the user with a numeric value of the evidence. These systems use their own algorithms and definitions of features to quantify the writing and can be considered a black-box. The …

Addressing Soil Carbon Sequestration Response From Multispecies Dairy Forage Systems And Modeling Rangeland Beef Cow Dry Matter Intake Using Precision Enteric Emissions Measurements, Lillian J. Mcfadden Jan 2023

Addressing Soil Carbon Sequestration Response From Multispecies Dairy Forage Systems And Modeling Rangeland Beef Cow Dry Matter Intake Using Precision Enteric Emissions Measurements, Lillian J. Mcfadden

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Regenerative agriculture is a pressing matter for the dairy industry to address cropland sustainability and carbon sequestration. One regenerative management practice that has been identified to help with row crop sustainability for key metrics like soil organic carbon (SOC) is complex covers. When producers use complex covers one of the main challenges is that it takes time to detect a change in SOC. However, simulation models are a tool that can be used to help determine if a regenerative practice is a strategy that gives the best results (i.e., increased SOC) while aligning with long-term production goals. Therefore, our objectives …
