The Behavior Of Partially Coherent Twisted Space-Time Beams In Atmospheric Turbulence, Milo W. Hyde Iv Jan 2023

The Behavior Of Partially Coherent Twisted Space-Time Beams In Atmospheric Turbulence, Milo W. Hyde Iv

Faculty Publications

We study how atmospheric turbulence affects twisted space-time beams, which are non-stationary random optical fields whose space and time dimensions are coupled with a stochastic twist. Applying the extended Huygens–Fresnel principle, we derive the mutual coherence function of a twisted space-time beam after propagating a distance z through atmospheric turbulence of arbitrary strength. We specialize the result to derive the ensemble-averaged irradiance and discuss how turbulence affects the beam’s spatial size, pulse width, and space-time twist. Lastly, we generate, in simulation, twisted space-time beam field realizations and propagate them through atmospheric phase screens to validate our analysis.

The researcher utilized the Suburban Midwestern School District as a case study to investigate how systematic and consistent implementation of a MTSS can reduce disproportionate identification, evaluation, and representation of subgroups within special education and simultaneously studied the perceptions of staff implementing the …

Obtaining The Transfer Function Of A Camera Mount Using Ansys And Matlab, Ikechukwu Stanley Nwade Jan 2023

Obtaining The Transfer Function Of A Camera Mount Using Ansys And Matlab, Ikechukwu Stanley Nwade

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, the transfer function of a camera mount is obtained using ANSYS and MATLAB. In a heads-up display (HUD) application, achieving precise image registration requires careful consideration of the camera's position relative to the vehicle. Vibrations can alter the camera's position, with tilt being the most impactful due to its increased displacement effect as objects are further away. This research tackles vibration by predicting the position of the camera using transfer function. To determine the transfer function for complex structures, such as camera mounts, this study aims to first establish a transfer function for a simpler model, like …

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Lie algebra L = sl2(C) consists of the 2 × 2 complex matrices that have trace zero, together with the Lie bracket [y, z] = yz − zy. In this thesis we study a relationship between L and Krawtchouk polynomials. We consider a type of element in L said to be normalized semisimple. Let a, a^∗ be normalized semisimple elements that generate L. We show that a, a^∗ satisfy a pair of relations, called the Askey-Wilson relations. For a positive integer N, we consider an (N + 1)-dimensional irreducible L-module V consisting of the homogeneous polynomials in two variables …

Women completing math tasks under stereotype threat underperform and experience increased negative outcomes compared to women under no threat and men. While previous interventions for stereotype threat focus on self-affirmation or role models as a means to reduce the effects of stereotype threat, the current study examines whether using a strategic mindset to increase self-reflection mitigates the negative effects of stereotype threat on women in math. Undergraduate women (N=149) were randomly assigned to read an article about the benefits of having a strategic mindset or taking cold showers. Participants were then randomly assigned to a stereotype threat condition (women perform …

Apparent Contours For Piecewise Smooth Surfaces, Sarah Marie Jackman Jan 2023

Apparent Contours For Piecewise Smooth Surfaces, Sarah Marie Jackman

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The set of points on an embedded surface $M$ that are tangent to a set viewing direction $\mathbf{v}$ is called the contour generator of $M$. The projection of those points to an image plane is called a surface's apparent contour. Apparent contours hold certain properties that allow for reconstruction of the original surface using only the information of the apparent contour. In this paper, we explore the structure of the apparent contour through contact classes and singularity types. Additionally we examine the properties of apparent contours that allow for 3 dimensional reconstruction. Our goal is to extend the properties of …

Thermal Temperatures And Social Network Position In Bonobos, Dain Rust Jan 2023

Thermal Temperatures And Social Network Position In Bonobos, Dain Rust

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In a variety of species, the maintenance of stable social connections is associated with lower levels of stress in individuals. Understanding how physiological stress responses interact reciprocally with social connections in bonobos, humans closest living relative, can provide useful information about both the emergence of social connections in our own species, as well as provide guidance for animal welfare procedures. Infrared thermography (IRT) has been shown to be a reliable non-invasive measure of stress response in some species, specifically non-human primates. The current study examines the relationship between baseline facial temperatures, social network position, and demographic variables in a population …

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Teacher preparation program agendas include culturally responsive teaching (CRT) due to the student diversity in modern elementary classrooms. Overwhelmingly, White, middle-class English-speaking women who may not completely understand their students' cultural backgrounds are teachers in those culturally diverse classrooms. In schools where Eurocentric values, assumptions, beliefs, and methodologies are being taught, many students of color are not performing well academically. Black teachers and teachers with a good understanding of students' cultural experiences and backgrounds have higher expectations and counter the racial stereotypes about Black students. This multiple case study examined how two teacher interns understand Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) and …

Many previous efforts surrounding faculty issues have focused on individual faculty research productivity. This study reimagined the definition of productivity as an academic’s impact on scholarly research, evidenced by their h-index.

At the same time, the need for diversity of faculty populations is becoming more urgent, even in a time when the number of tenure-earning faculty positions is diminishing and those which remain are occupied mainly by white men. To add to the disparities, it is reported that only 4% of full-time faculty are Black women. Black …

Ovulation Prediction Using Random Forest Algorithm On Physiological Data, Kimberly D. Laynes Jan 2023

Ovulation Prediction Using Random Forest Algorithm On Physiological Data, Kimberly D. Laynes

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Human infertility rates are on the rise -- studies have shown that one in every four women have trouble conceiving and every year those rates are rising [Halleran22]. This trend motivates procedures such as in-vitro fertilization (IVF) and intrauterine insemination (IUI) to produce a pregnancy. Such procedures are not only intricate and expensive but also carry potential unintended consequences for women's physical and mental well-being. A more profound comprehension of the menstrual cycle and its multiple phases, particularly detecting the ovulation period itself, promotes optimized treatment outcomes and reduces associated risks. To facilitate ovulation detection, new sensing technologies built into …

Development Of High Kinetic Inductance Superconducting Nanowire Devices On High Permittivity Strontium Titanate Substrates, Jamie Timmons

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis involves the fabrication and characterization of devices made from two different superconducting materials: yttrium barium copper oxide (YBCO), a high-TC complex oxide, and niobium nitride (NbN), a low-TC transition metal nitride. Both types of devices are fabricated on strontium titanate substrates, which provides a good lattice match to YBCO and also an extremely large permittivity at low temperature. We demonstrate that wet etching of YBCO thin films via bromine can be a viable microfrabriation technique for the material. Using approximately 35 nm thick epitaxially grown YBCO on an STO substrate, we were able to fabricate YBCO “microwires” with …
