Activity 3: Build It Fast!, Patrick Young

Theme 1: Structure and Process

One of the costs of any road project is the economic impact of rerouting traffic during the construction. Methods that minimize the disruption will reduce costs and often improve safety. Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) methods include prefabricating as much of the bridge as possible at an off-site location. Large parts are brought to the site and installed according to a plan that minimizes the time required to reroute traffic.

Analytical Fundamentals For Advancing Aero-Road/Terrain Multibody Morphing Dynamics And Stability Of Autonomous Utility Truck In Hazardous Environments, Parth Y. Patel Jan 2023

Analytical Fundamentals For Advancing Aero-Road/Terrain Multibody Morphing Dynamics And Stability Of Autonomous Utility Truck In Hazardous Environments, Parth Y. Patel

All ETDs from UAB

Severe weather conditions have steadily increased over the last two decades. Therefore, the safety of the rescue and repair team is of paramount importance while they attend to emergencies due to these severe weather conditions. Utility trucks are the first responders in these extreme climate and weather situations for cutting trees to restore traffic, recovering life beings from destroyed properties, repairing electric posts, and restoring power. Such trucks with morphing capabilities of the boom equipment can increase the possibility of road accidents in several ways and create hazardous situations on the roads and off-road conditions while moving and performing critical …

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Small details of natural history often go undocumented to science if those details are not parts of larger studies. However, knowledge of small details can provide insights that lead to interesting questions about ecological relationships or environmental change. We have compiled recent important observations of natural history of vertebrates, including several distributional and size records of fishes, atypical carapace shape in a common snapping turtle, an unusual support structure for a bird nest, healed damage to a broken jaw of a young deer, and numerous distributional records of bats.

Robotic Inspection And Data Analytics To Localize And Visualize The Structural Defects Of Civil Infrastructure, Jinglun Feng Jan 2023

Robotic Inspection And Data Analytics To Localize And Visualize The Structural Defects Of Civil Infrastructure, Jinglun Feng

Dissertations and Theses

Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) serves as a significant nondestructive evaluation (NDE) technique to inspect and survey underground objects (e.g., rebars, utility pipes) in complex urban environments. In addition to GPR, visual-based surface defect detection plays a crucial role in assessing and maintaining civil infrastructure. To facilitate deployment on a robotic platform and enhance inspection capabilities, the integration of GPR and visual-based sensors, such as RGB-D cameras, is crucial to obtain accurate subsurface and surface information. This thesis presents a novel robotic-based inspection system for the efficient collection of NDE data and accurate 3D reconstruction of both subsurface and surface infrastructure …

Organic Culture Media For Sustainable Carotenoid Production From Microalgae, Wa Iba, Nur Illyin Akib, Ilham, La Ode Muhammad Jumardin, Bolo Arif, Nursainuddin, Sendry Yosalina, Jumtrisnanda Asmin Andas Jan 2023

Organic Culture Media For Sustainable Carotenoid Production From Microalgae, Wa Iba, Nur Illyin Akib, Ilham, La Ode Muhammad Jumardin, Bolo Arif, Nursainuddin, Sendry Yosalina, Jumtrisnanda Asmin Andas

Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Sciences Faculty Publications

Antioxidants, particularly those carotenoid produced in microalgae, can be increased by induced stress, including light, nutrients, and salinity. Nutrient stress can be achieved by using imbalanced nutrients to boost antioxidant production without compromising the growth, that is, biomass. Culture media is an important factor in microalgae production because it is affecting growth and biomass production, as well as the biochemical content of microalgae. Synthetic or conventional culture media is considerably expensive for mass culture and the supply is limited, especially for developing countries. Therefore, there is a need for cheap and easily available culture media. This chapter discusses the use …

New Insights Into Binocular Rivalry From The Reconstruction Of Evolving Percepts Using Model Network Dynamics, Kenneth Barkdoll , '24, Yuhua Lu , '24, Victor J. Barranca Jan 2023

New Insights Into Binocular Rivalry From The Reconstruction Of Evolving Percepts Using Model Network Dynamics, Kenneth Barkdoll , '24, Yuhua Lu , '24, Victor J. Barranca

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Works

When the two eyes are presented with highly distinct stimuli, the resulting visual percept generally switches every few seconds between the two monocular images in an irregular fashion, giving rise to a phenomenon known as binocular rivalry. While a host of theoretical studies have explored potential mechanisms for binocular rivalry in the context of evoked model dynamics in response to simple stimuli, here we investigate binocular rivalry directly through complex stimulus reconstructions based on the activity of a two-layer neuronal network model with competing downstream pools driven by disparate monocular stimuli composed of image pixels. To estimate the dynamic percept, …

Quantum Hooks And Mirror Symmetry For Flag Varieties, Linda Chen, E. Kalashnikov Jan 2023

Quantum Hooks And Mirror Symmetry For Flag Varieties, Linda Chen, E. Kalashnikov

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Works

Given a flag variety F1 (n; r1,...,rp), there is natural ring morphism from the symmetric polynomial ring in r1 variables to the quantum cohomology of the flag variety. In this paper, we show that for a large class of partitions λ, the image of sλ under the ring homomorphism is a Schubert class which is described by partitioning λ into a quantum hook (or q-hook) and a tuple of smaller partitions. We use this result to show that the Plücker coordinate mirror of the flag variety describes quantum cohomology relations. This gives new …

Structure And Dynamics That Specialize Neurons For High-Frequency Coincidence Detection In The Barn Owl Nucleus Laminaris, Ben Drucker , '22, Joshua H. Goldwyn Jan 2023

Structure And Dynamics That Specialize Neurons For High-Frequency Coincidence Detection In The Barn Owl Nucleus Laminaris, Ben Drucker , '22, Joshua H. Goldwyn

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Works

A principal cue for sound source localization is the difference in arrival times of sounds at an animal’s two ears (interaural time difference, ITD). Neurons that process ITDs are specialized to compare the timing of inputs with submillisecond precision. In the barn owl, ITD processing begins in the nucleus laminaris (NL) region of the auditory brain stem. Remarkably, NL neurons are sensitive to ITDs in high-frequency sounds (kilohertz-range). This contrasts with ITD-based sound localization in analogous regions in mammals where ITD sensitivity is typically restricted to lower-frequency sounds. Guided by previous experiments and modeling studies of tone-evoked responses of NL …

A Method For Quantifying Individual Decision Thresholds Of Latent Print Examiners, Amanda Luby Jan 2023

A Method For Quantifying Individual Decision Thresholds Of Latent Print Examiners, Amanda Luby

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Works

In recent years, ‘black box’ studies in forensic science have emerged as the preferred way to provide information about the overall validity of forensic disciplines in practice. These studies provide aggregated error rates over many examiners and comparisons, but errors are not equally likely on all comparisons. Furthermore, inconclusive responses are common and vary across examiners and comparisons, but do not fit neatly into the error rate framework. This work introduces Item Response Theory (IRT) and variants for the forensic setting to account for these two issues. In the IRT framework, participant proficiency and item difficulty are estimated directly from …

Generalized Sasakian Structures From A Poisson Geometry Viewpoint, Janet Talvacchia Jan 2023

Generalized Sasakian Structures From A Poisson Geometry Viewpoint, Janet Talvacchia

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Works

In this paper we define a canonical Poisson structure on a normal generalized contact metric space and use this structure to define a generalized Sasakian structure. We show also that this canonical Poisson structure enables us to distinguish generalized Sasakian structures from generalized coKähler structures.

An Exploration Of Parameter Duality In Statistical Inference, Suzanne Thornton, M. Xie Jan 2023

An Exploration Of Parameter Duality In Statistical Inference, Suzanne Thornton, M. Xie

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Works

Well-known debates among statistical inferential paradigms emerge from conflicting views on the notion of probability. One dominant view understands probability as a representation of sampling variability; another prominent view understands probability as a measure of belief. The former generally describes model parameters as fixed values, in contrast to the latter. We propose that there are actually two versions of a parameter within both paradigms: a fixed unknown value that generated the data and a random version to describe the uncertainty in estimating the unknown value. An inferential approach based on CDs deciphers seemingly conflicting perspectives on parameters and probabilities.

Utilization Of Large-Scale Genomic Data And Phylogenetic Methods In Studying Evolutionary Radiations, Eren Ada Jan 2023

Utilization Of Large-Scale Genomic Data And Phylogenetic Methods In Studying Evolutionary Radiations, Eren Ada

Open Access Dissertations

The remarkable biodiversity of the Earth fascinated natural scientists for centuries. Studying this biodiversity has been a major occupation of the life sciences because deciphering the underlying biological mechanisms of diversification provides fundamental knowledge for biological evolution. A significant body of evidence shows that today’s biodiversity originated from successive adaptive diversification periods (i.e.: evolutionary radiations) which are generally characterized by the rapid multiplication of lineages with a variety of adaptations and ecological roles. Some of the most well-known examples of evolutionary radiations include the striking wing pattern diversity of Heliconius butterflies, the great body form variety of Caribbean anole lizards, …

An accurate economic loss assessment for natural hazards is vital for planning, mitigation, and actuarial purposes. The widespread and costly nature of flood hazards, with the economically disadvantaged disproportionately victimized population, makes flood risk assessment particularly important. Here, flood risk is assessed as incurred by the homeowner vs. the flood insurer for insured U.S. properties through the derivation of average annual loss (AAL). AAL is estimated and partitioned using Monte Carlo simulation at the individual home scale, considering insurance coverage and deductible, and the first-floor height (i.e., height of the first floor above the ground), to determine the AAL proportion …

Flood Damage And Shutdown Times For Industrial Process Facilities: A Vulnerability Assessment Process Framework, Carol J. Friedland, Fatemeh Orooji, Ayat Al Assi, Matthew L. Flynn, Rubayet Bin Mostafiz

Much of the U.S. petrochemical infrastructure is heavily concentrated along the western coast of the Gulf of Mexico within the impact zone of major tropical cyclone events. Flood impacts of recent tropical disturbances have been exacerbated by an overall lack of recognition of the vulnerabilities to process systems from water intrusion, as well as insufficient disaster mitigation planning. Vulnerability assessment methods currently call for the aggregation of qualitative data to survey the susceptibility of industrial systems to floodwater damage. A means to quantify these consequences is less often employed, resulting in a poor translation of the threat of flood hazards …

Homeowner Flood Risk And Risk Reduction From Home Elevation Between The Limits Of The 100- And 500-Year Floodplains, Ayat Al Assi, Rubayet Bin Mostafiz, Carol J. Friedland, Robert V. Rohli, Md Adilur Rahim Jan 2023

Homeowner Flood Risk And Risk Reduction From Home Elevation Between The Limits Of The 100- And 500-Year Floodplains, Ayat Al Assi, Rubayet Bin Mostafiz, Carol J. Friedland, Robert V. Rohli, Md Adilur Rahim

Floods inflict significant damage even outside the 100-year floodplain. Thus, restricting flood risk analysis to the 100-year floodplain (Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA) in the United States of America) is misleading. Flood risk outside the SFHA is often underestimated because of minimal flood-related insurance requirements and regulations and sparse flood depth data. This study proposes a systematic approach to predict flood risk for a single-family home using average annual loss (AAL) in the shaded X Zone–the area immediately outside the SFHA (i.e., the 500-year floodplain), which lies between the limits of the 1.0- and 0.2-percent annual flood probability. To further …

Unpacking Elementary Preservice Teachers’ Ways Of Reflecting On Conceptual Mistakes, Nicole Wessman-Enzinger, Natasha Gerstenschlager Jan 2023

Unpacking Elementary Preservice Teachers’ Ways Of Reflecting On Conceptual Mistakes, Nicole Wessman-Enzinger, Natasha Gerstenschlager

Faculty Publications - College of Education

We know that making mistakes in mathematics is an inherent attribute of doing mathematics deeply. Yet, making mistakes is at the root of mathema- tical fear and anxiety for elementary preservice teachers (PSTs). Valuing mistakes in mathematics is an essential part of shifting from deficient views to asset views of mistakes and having better mathematical learning experi- ences. In two mathematics content courses at different universities, we implemented a project, “My Favorite Conceptual Mistake,” as a tool for supporting PSTs in reflecting on conceptual mistakes about mathematics. In this article, we describe the ways that the PSTs reflected on mistakes. …
