Rate-Of-Penetration (Rop) Prediction Model Based On Formation Characteristics Of Extremely Thick Plastic Mudstone In South China Sea, Zeng Xiaolong, Li Qian, Wei Hongchao, Chen Jiahao, Zhu Haiyan
Coal Geology & Exploration
In terms of petroleum and gas resources, South China Sea is the important energy replacement area in China. However, most of the reservoirs are buried deep, and the strong plasticity of the formation under high confining pressure and the complex geological environment seriously affect the drilling efficiency. It is also very difficult to accurately predict the ROP. Hence, a set of intelligent ROP prediction model was established for the extremely thick mudstone formation with unique viscoelastic and strong plastic characteristics in South China Sea. The model took the actual data of 10 wells in an area of South China Sea …
A Typology Of Illustration, Jeffrey Strayer
A Typology Of Illustration, Jeffrey Strayer
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
This article introduces the notions of technique-based, problem-based, and history-based illustrations as kinds of illustration relevant to art and philosophy that are intended to complement those recognized by Wartenberg. In doing so, it considers the possible illustration of different ideas within a single work, and the possibility that the complex interrelation of certain ideas may require a number of works for the success of their illustration. These different possibilities raise the issue of how illustration is related to artistic intention and understanding and to the history of art, with its settled and novel kinds of artistic production. Art as philosophy …

Further Reflections On Visual Illustrations Of Philosophy: A Response To Freeland, Schellekens, And Strayer, Thomas E. Wartenberg
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
The incisive commentaries about Thoughtful Images by Cynthia Freeland, Elisabeth Schellekens, and Jeff Strayer provide the occasion for a rethinking of some of the fundamental claims about visual illustrations of philosophy that I made in the book. The essay begins with a discussion of the “logic” of the term ‘illustration’ and then discusses the relationship between illustrations and technology. A variety of different themes are then addressed, such as the possibility of musical illustrations of philosophy; differences in the processing of written texts and visual images; additions to fidelity and felicity as norms applying to successful illustrations of philosophy; and …

Optimization Of Biomedical Imaging Filters For Use In Recaptured Identity Document Classification, John Magee, Stephen Sheridan Phd, Christina Thorpe Phd
Conference papers
As banks and online financial institutions move toward full remote onboarding services, the attack vectors for bad actors increases to include those of recaptured identity documents. This type of fraud opens banking customers to potential crimes of identity theft, as well as causing reputational damage to the institutions involved. In this paper we extend existing research focusing on the use of biomedical imaging filters and their usefulness when classifying recaptured identity documents. We perform a grid search and demonstrate that different filter configurations exist that dramatically reduce the classification error rates compared to those achieved using only the default filter …

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research
Improving object manipulation skills through hand-object interaction exercises is crucial for rehabilitation. Despite limited healthcare resources, physical therapists propose remote exercise routines followed up by remote monitoring. However, remote motor skills assessment remains challenging due to the lack of effective motion visualizations. Therefore, exploring innovative ways of visualization is crucial, and virtual reality (VR) has shown the potential to address this limitation. However, it is unclear how VR visualization can represent understandable hand-object interactions. To address this gap, in this paper, we present VRMoVi, a VR visualization system that incorporates multiple levels of 3D visualization layers to depict movements. In …
Disentangling Trend Risk And Basis Risk With Functional Time Series, Yanxin Liu, Johnny Siu-Hang Li
Disentangling Trend Risk And Basis Risk With Functional Time Series, Yanxin Liu, Johnny Siu-Hang Li
Department of Finance: Faculty Publications
In recent multi-population stochastic mortality models, one critical scientific issue is the vague distinction between trend risk and population basis risk. In particular, the cross- and auto-correlations between the innovations of the latent factors representing the common trend and the population-specific trends are often assumed to be non-existent, although they are possibly statistically significant. While it is theoretically possible to capture such correlations by treating the latent factors as a vector time series, the resulting model would contain a large number of parameters, which may in turn lead to robustness problems. In this paper, we address these issues by the …

Imprisoned By Algorithms: Risk Assessment Instruments And Predictive Sentencing In The Criminal Legal System, Thomas Johnson
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Tools for predicting an individual’s risk of recidivism are implemented throughout the criminal legal system, from informing decisions about release pretrial to identifying appropriate treatment plans for successful reentry. Data-driven risk assessment is increasingly being incorporated during sentencing proceedings across the United States. There is significant variation across jurisdictions in how these tools are constructed and what they aim to predict. The use of algorithmic risk assessment at sentencing is hotly contested due to concerns over the opacity of algorithms developed by private corporations, the potential for perpetuating disparities present in the criminal legal system, and violations of the constitutional …

In several regions across the globe, snow has a significant impact on hydrology. The amounts of water that infiltrate the ground and flow as runoff are driven by the melting of snow. Therefore, it is crucial to study the magnitude and effect of snowmelt. Snow droughts, resulting from reduced snow storage, can drastically impact the water supplies in basins where snow predominates, such as in the western United States. Hence, it is important to detect the time and severity of snow droughts efficiently. We propose the Snow Drought Response Index or SnoDRI, a novel indicator that could be used to …

Lattice Investigations Of The Chimera Baryon Spectrum In The Sp(4) Gauge Theory, Ed Bennett, Deog Ki Hong, Ho Hsiao, Jong-Wan Lee, C. -J. David Lin, Biagio Lucini, Maurizio Piai, Davide Vadacchino
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
We report the results of lattice numerical studies of the Sp(4) gauge theory coupled to fermions (hyperquarks) transforming in the fundamental and two-index antisymmetric representations of the gauge group. This strongly-coupled theory is the minimal candidate for the ultraviolet completion of composite Higgs models that facilitate the mechanism of partial compositeness for generating the top-quark mass. We measure the spectrum of the low-lying, half-integer spin, bound states composed of two fundamental and one antisymmetric hyperquarks, dubbed chimera baryons, in the quenched approximation. In this first systematic, non-perturbative study, we focus on the three lightest parity-even chimera-baryon states, in analogy with …

Acoustic levitation has become a crucial technique for contactless manipulation in several fields, particularly in biological applications. However, its application in the photonics field remains largely unexplored. In this study, we implement an affordable and innovative phased-array levitator that enables stable trapping in the air of micrometer dye-doped droplets, thereby enabling the creation of microlasers. For the first time, this paper presents a detailed performance of the levitated microlaser cavity, supported by theoretical analysis concerning the hybrid technology based on the combination of whispering-gallery modes and acoustic fields. The pressure field distribution inside the acoustic cavity is numerically solved and …

Enhancing Inter-Document Similarity Using Sub Max, Richard Imorobebh Igbiriki
Theses and Dissertations
Document similarity, a core theme in Information Retrieval (IR), is a machine learning (ML) task associated with natural language processing (NLP). It is a measure of the distance between two documents given a set of rules. For the purpose of this thesis, two documents are similar if they are semantically alike, and describe similar concepts. While document similarity can be applied to multiple tasks, we focus our work on the accuracy of models in detecting referenced papers as similar documents using their sub max similarity. Multiple approaches have been used to determine the similarity of documents in regards to literature …
