Safety Of Domestic Ferries: A Scoping Study Of Seven High-Risk Countries, Anish Hebbar, Serdar Yildiz, Nadhir Kahlouche, Jens-Uwe Schröder-Hinrichs

Reports

Ferry accidents are fairly common globally, causing countless deaths and injuries. Whereas ferry transportation is an integral part of the domestic transport infrastructure in many countries, particularly archipelagic countries such as Indonesia and the Philippines, river deltaic countries like Bangladesh, countries with extensive riverine systems such as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Nigeria and Senegal, or even a combination of great lakes, rivers and archipelago such as Tanzania, these countries are experiencing a high number of ferry accidents and fatalities over the past two decades and, therefore, considered high-risk countries in the ferry transport sector. International community continuously seeks …

Longevity, as a complex life-history trait, shares an ontogenetic relationship with other quantitative traits, such as epigenetic and environmental factors. Therefore, it is important to identify environmental factors that may modify the epigenome to establish healthy aging. This study explored the association between tap drinking water and longevity in Cilento, Italy, to understand whether trace elements in local drinking water may have an influence on old, nonagenarian, and centenarian people and promote their health and longevity. Data on population and water sources were collected through the National Demographic Statistics, the Cilento Municipal Archives, and the Cilento Integrated Water Service. Ordinary …

Medication Initiation, Patient-Directed Discharges, And Hospital Readmissions Before And After Implementing Guidelines For Opioid Withdrawal Management, Jillian Zavodnick, Md, Nicolette M. Heinsinger, Angelo C. Lepore, Robert C. Sterling Jan 2023

Medication Initiation, Patient-Directed Discharges, And Hospital Readmissions Before And After Implementing Guidelines For Opioid Withdrawal Management, Jillian Zavodnick, Md, Nicolette M. Heinsinger, Angelo C. Lepore, Robert C. Sterling

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

OBJECTIVES: Rising rates of hospitalization for patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) result in high rates of patient-directed discharge (PDD, also called "discharge against medical advice") and 30-day readmissions. Interdisciplinary addiction consult services are an emerging criterion standard to improve care for these patients, but these services are resource- and expertise-intensive. A set of withdrawal guidelines was developed to guide generalists in caring for patients with opioid withdrawal at a hospital without an addiction consult service.

METHODS: Retrospective chart review was performed to determine PDD, 30-day readmission, and psychiatry consult rates for hospitalized patients with OUD during periods before (July …

Perioperative Outcomes Of Patients With Bleeding Disorders Undergoing Major Surgery At An Academic Hemophilia Treatment Center, Ruben Rhoades, Zachary French, Amy Yang, Karen Walsh, Douglass A. Drelich, Steven E. Mckenzie

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

Persons with bleeding disorders (PwBD) are at high risk for bleeding with invasive procedures. However, the risk of bleeding in PwBD undergoing major surgery and outcomes of patients managed perioperatively at a hemophilia treatment center (HTC) are not well described. We performed a retrospective review of surgical outcomes among PwBD undergoing major surgery between January 1st, 2017 and December 31st, 2019 at the Cardeza Foundation Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center in Philadelphia, PA. The primary outcome was postoperative bleeding, assessed according to the ISTH-SSC's 2010 definition. Secondary outcomes included use of unplanned postoperative hemostatic therapy, LOS, and 30-day readmission rate. Results …

Small Modular Reactors, Joshua P. Schlegel, P. K. Bhowmik

Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) have been a very promising development in nuclear power over the last two decades. SMRs are defined as nuclear reactors with a power output of less than 300MWe. This is in comparison to gigawatt-size reactors, which can have electrical output of 1000–1500MWe or more. This chapter will consist of two major sections. the first will be a detailed summary of the small modular reactor designs being proposed around the world. This section will focus on those that are the furthest along in their development but will also include some information about the wide variety of proposed …

Halloween 2023: It's A Barbie World!, Jin-A Choi, Yi Luo, Bond Benton, Keith Green

College of Communication and Media Scholarship and Creative Works

Move over, black and orange, and step aside for the color that is going to dominate Halloween this year, “Barbie Pink.” And yes, Ken, “it won’t matter what you do, you will always be number two,” at least when it comes to Halloween costumes in 2023. And those wildly popular Star Wars and Marvel character costumes traditionally seen during the “spookiest” time of the year? It seems they won’t match the popularity of the fictional character, Barbie, who reemerged this year on the pop culture scene after the incredible success of the Warner Bros. film “Barbie” released in July.

2023 Scotus Report: Americans Reacted With Disgust And Sadness Toward The Scotus' Recent Rulings, Yi Luo, Bond Benton, Jin-A Choi, Keith Strudler, Keith Green

College of Communication and Media Scholarship and Creative Works

On June 29, SCOTUS struck down affirmative action, ruling the race-conscious admissions programs at colleges and universities unconstitutional. Then, on June 30, SCOTUS handed down another landmark ruling which outlawed student loan forgiveness and terminated President Biden’s plan to provide student loan reliefs for tens of millions of Americans. This high court’s decision on student loans will likely affect one in eight Americans, leaving student loan borrowers feeling frustrated, defeated, and angry. As online media have increasingly played a central role in facilitating civic engagement and shaping individuals’ decisions on contested issues, this study thus examines how social media users …

A Strategy To Increase Spiritual Maturity By Practicing Spiritual Disciplines At Berean Seventh-Day Adventist Church In Houston, Texas, Robert W. Norwood Jan 2023

A Strategy To Increase Spiritual Maturity By Practicing Spiritual Disciplines At Berean Seventh-Day Adventist Church In Houston, Texas, Robert W. Norwood

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

Berean Seventh-day Adventist Church has been a pillar in the Third Ward community of Houston since the 1900s. Berean has two distinctions. It is the only Seventh-day Adventist church in downtown Houston. It is also the only predominantly African American Seventh-day church in the area. Its DNA has always been community and civic minded. Like many other churches, Berean is a commuter church. There are two individuals who live near the church; however, the majority of the members who attend Berean commute to the church to minister to the community. Berean was established by individuals who had a desire …

Premarital Education : A Comprehensive Approach For Seventh-Day Adventist Pastors In The Italian Union, Roberto Ianno Jan 2023

Premarital Education : A Comprehensive Approach For Seventh-Day Adventist Pastors In The Italian Union, Roberto Ianno

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

Although the Adventist Church upholds the importance of a Christlike and stable marriage, the Italian Union historically never developed a systematic and comprehensive approach to both premarital counseling and enrichment programs for married couples, whose preparation is aleatory and depends on both/either the pastor’s approach and/or the couple’s request. The results could be a weakening of both marital stability and marital satisfaction. We assume that the root problem is a naïve understanding of marriage which causes couples to put more effort into preparing for the wedding day rather than for the marital journey.

Method

An action research intervention was …

Moments Of Excess: Type 1 Diabetes And The Myth Of Control In Adolescent Fiction For Girls, Michelle E. Legault

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This thesis is the first academic work to analyze the stories of the Type 1 diabetic teen girls of adolescent fiction. In novels for adolescent readers, these girls are often White, female, heterosexual, and middle class—resulting in a collective disability narrative that portrays an “every girl” and lacks cultural or political dimensions. This thesis explores the narratives of five fictional teen protagonists with Type 1 diabetes. They are: Stacey McGill from the Baby-Sitters Club series by Ann M. Martin, Rachel Deering in Lurlene McDaniel’s Will I Ever Dance Again? (1982), Mackenzie “Zie” Clark in Sarah White’s Let Me List the …

Know Thyself - Embracing The Ambiguity Of War By Other Means, Anne Leslie

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

On paper, nothing predestined me for a career in cybersecurity. Much in the same way as nothing on paper predestined me for being involved in a multinational effort like Project Seshat to study and respond to the rising threats of 'hybrid warfare' and 'gray zone conflict', or to give a keynote address at the Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution Melnick Symposium themed "Negotiation Strategies for War by Other Means."

How To Undermine A Nation-State In 120 Days: Mediation And Negotiation In A Hybrid Warfare World, Christopher A. Corpora Jan 2023

How To Undermine A Nation-State In 120 Days: Mediation And Negotiation In A Hybrid Warfare World, Christopher A. Corpora

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

The original and admittedly provocative title for this essay was "How to Take Down a State in 120 days" and the original November 2022, 20-minute presentation at Cardozo Law School was so titled. The intention behind the provocations was to demonstrate the speed of growing investment in and multi-disciplinary nature of the current hybrid war threat. We have not yet witnessed many state takedowns through this form of warfare; but we have seen states significantly undermined and captured in timelines almost as aggressive as the title suggests. We have seen authoritarian states and criminal organizations significantly weaken more vulnerable states, …

Negotiation Theories Engage Hybrid Warfare, Nancy A. Welsh, Sharon Press, Andrea Kupfer Schneider Jan 2023

Negotiation Theories Engage Hybrid Warfare, Nancy A. Welsh, Sharon Press, Andrea Kupfer Schneider

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

When Calvin Chrustie and Chris Honeyman first approached the authors of this Article regarding the potential application of negotiation scholars' expertise to the problem of hybrid warfare, our first reaction was confusion. First, what exactly was hybrid warfare? Second, since "war" was in its name, what did our field have to say that could even potentially be useful? This Article, in some sense, is designed to begin to respond to those questions and, hopefully, to encourage other scholars in our field to weigh in with their contributions and criticisms. This Article represents only a start.

Thinking Ahead In The Grey Zone, Chris Honeyman, Ellen Parker

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

Readers who have recently begun to consider the implications of grey zone conflict or hybrid warfare for their own companies, law firms, or other organizations could be forgiven for seeing the entire subject as startling if not downright alarming. But some of our colleagues in this issue, notably Chris Corpora and Anne Leslie, have taken pains to point out how hybrid warfare could be seen instead as merely the latest and most technologically sophisticated version of attempts to undermine other countries which go back millennia. And the specific techniques that might help your company-or law firm, municipal government, university or …

A Portrait Of The Artist’S Heirs In Mediation: Adr Techniques To Prevent And Resolve Disputes Following An Author’S Death, Nicholas Beudert

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

If an author's work is powerful enough, or popular enough, it's likely that at some point someone will want to write about her. For scholars embarking upon these projects, the author's body of published work can provide insight into her psyche, but correspondence and other unpublished materials can also be valuable. Copyright law covers all of these materials, and when the author dies, she can bequest her copyright as she would the rest of her estate (if she hasn't transferred it during her lifetime). The recipient of these copyrights may now treat the copyrights as her own, as though she …

Big Screen Or Bust?: How Contractual Negotiations In Hollywood Must Adapt In The Streaming Era, Alexis Narotzky

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

Scarlett Johansson made her first appearance as her superhero alter-ego, the Black Widow, on May 7, 2010, in the movie Iron Man 2. Over the next intervening eleven years, Johansson appeared in several of Disney's Marvel ("Disney" or "Marvel") movies in supporting roles. On July 9, 2021, Marvel released the Black Widow with Scarlett Johansson as the lead character. Johansson's agreement for her character's eponymous film was built upon the expectation of large bonuses based on profit from outsized box-office receipts, understood as a profit-participation or contingent compensation contract. Johansson's lawyers negotiated for a "wide theatrical release" to protect …

Learning Performance Efficiency Of College Basketball Players Using Tvae, Nasim Yahyasoltani, Priyanka Annapureddy, Manzur Rahman Farazi

Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Monitoring workload is essential to evaluate possibility of fatigue or injuries and overall performance of the players. Large player’s workload in any game including basketball can contribute to the stress and fatigue and overloaded players may get exhausted and exhibit burnout symptoms, which eventually result in their lower efficiency in the game. This paper aims at predicting the efficiency of the basketball players in all positions (guard, forward and center) based on their workload information. Machine learning (ML) methods for regression and classification are applied to the dataset for predictive modelling of the variables. The analysis includes: (i) one-model for …

When Do Data Collection And Use Become A Matter Of Concern? A Cross-Cultural Comparison Of U.S. And Dutch Privacy Attitudes, Jessica Vitak, Yuting Liao, Anouk Mols, Daniel Trottier, Michael Zimmer, Priya C. Kumar, Jason Pridmore

Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Around the world, people increasingly generate data through their everyday activities. Much of this happens unwittingly through sensors, cameras, and other surveillance tools on roads, in cities, and at the workplace. However, how individuals and governments think about privacy varies significantly around the world. In this article, we explore differences between people’s attitudes toward privacy and data collection practices in the United States and the Netherlands, two countries with very different regulatory approaches to governing consumer privacy. Through a factorial vignette survey deployed in the two countries, we identify specific contextual factors associated with concerns regarding how personal data are …

Boundary Regulation Processes And Privacy Concerns With (Non-)Use Of Voice-Based Assistants, Jessica Vitak, Priya C. Kumar, Yuting Liao, Michael Zimmer

Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

An exemplar of human-machine communication, voice-based assistants (VBAs) embedded in smartphones and smart speakers simplify everyday tasks while collecting significant data about users and their environment. In recent years, devices using VBAs have continued to add new features and collect more data—in potentially invasive ways. Using Communication Privacy Management theory as a guiding framework, we analyze data from 11 focus groups with 65 US adult VBA users and nonusers. Findings highlight differences in attitudes and concerns toward VBAs broadly and provide insights into how attitudes are influenced by device features. We conclude with considerations for how to address boundary regulation …

Power, Stress, And Uncertainty: Experiences With And Attitudes Toward Workplace Surveillance During A Pandemic, Jessica Vitak, Michael Zimmer

Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

There is a rich literature on technology’s role in facilitating employee monitoring in the workplace. The COVID-19 pandemic created many challenges for employers, and many companies turned to new forms of monitoring to ensure remote workers remained productive; however, these technologies raise important privacy concerns as the boundaries between work and home are further blurred. In this paper, we present findings from a study of 645 US workers who spent at least part of 2020 working remotely due to the pandemic. We explore how their work experiences (job satisfaction, stress, and security) changed between January and November 2020, as well …

Graph-Based Multi-Task Learning For Fault Detection In Smart Grid, Dibaloke Chanda, Nasim Yahyasoltani Jan 2023

Graph-Based Multi-Task Learning For Fault Detection In Smart Grid, Dibaloke Chanda, Nasim Yahyasoltani

Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Timely detection of electrical faults is of paramount importance for efficient operation of the smart grid. To better equip the power grid operators to prevent grid-wide cascading failures, the detection of fault occurrence and its type must be accompanied by accurately locating the fault. In this work, we propose a multi-task learning architecture that encodes the graph structure of the distribution network through a shared graph neural network (GNN) to both classify and detect faults and their locations simultaneously. Deploying GNNs allows for representation learning of the grid structure which can later be used to optimize grid operation. The proposed …
