Neutrophil Cd64 Index As A Good Biomarker For Early Diagnosis Of Bacterial Infection In Pregnant Women During The Flu Season, Lifei Yu, Panpan Cen, Linjian Zhang, Jianfei Ke, Xiangfei Xu, Jiexia Ding, Jie Jin, Jianhang Leng, Yunsong Yu

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

BACKGROUND: Pregnant women are at high risk of developing febrile illness during the flu season. Early identification of a viral or bacterial infection is crucial in the management of febrile pregnant patients. Neutrophil CD64 (nCD64) has been shown to have more important diagnostic value in sepsis than traditional inflammatory indicators.

METHODS: The pregnant women enrolled were divided into three groups according to disease: influenza A infection, bacterial infection and healthy controls. Peripheral blood CD64, leukocyte, C-reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin (PCT) and human Th1/Th2-related cytokines levels were routinely measured. The correlation between and diagnostic value of the nCD64 index and other …

The Remains Of The Establishment Clause, Ira C. Lupu, Robert W. Tuttle Aug 2023

The Remains Of The Establishment Clause, Ira C. Lupu, Robert W. Tuttle

UC Law Journal

The very first words of the Bill of Rights mark religion as constitutionally distinctive. Congress may not enact laws respecting an establishment of religion—in particular, acts of worship, religious instruction, or proselytizing. A pluralist, liberal democracy requires separation of civil government from these distinctively religious activities. From the middle of the twentieth century until Justice O’Connor’s retirement in 2005, the Supreme Court energetically animated that principle of distinctiveness. In a series of decisions in the last decade, however, the Court has upended its longstanding approach to what is distinctive about religion in constitutional law. Notably, this process of change has …

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

Objective:

Black communities have disproportionately experienced adverse health effects from the COVID-19 pandemic while simultaneously having less vaccination access and decreased vaccine utilization. As such, predictors of vaccination uptake within Black communities are a public health imperative. Black Americans from socio-geographic regions associated with health inequities (e.g., Appalachia), including vaccination disparities, represent an intersection of racial, economic, and ethnic social identities. To better understand the preventive health needs of Black communities in Appalachia and elsewhere, this study examined psychosocial predictors of vaccination intention or behavior.

Method:

Adults (n = 336) identifying as Black or African American from West …

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) has been classified by the World Health Organization as being in the critical category of pathogens requiring urgent new antibiotic treatment options. Cefiderocol, the first approved siderophore cephalosporin, was designed for the treatment of carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative pathogens, particularly the non-fermenting species A. baumannii and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Cefiderocol is mostly stable against hydrolysis by serine β-lactamases and metallo-β-lactamases, which are leading causes of carbapenem resistance. This review collates the available evidence on the in vitro activity, pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics, and efficacy and safety of cefiderocol, and outlines its current role in the management of CRAB infections. In vitro surveillance …

INTRODUCTION: Proteinuria is one of the classical criteria for the diagnosis of pre-eclampsia. The gold standard remains the measurement of 24-h urine protein which is time consuming and prone to preanalytical errors. Random urine protein creatinine ratio (UPCR) is endorsed by clinical practice guidelines as a faster alternative. The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation between the 24-h urine protein excretion and UPCR in the identification of proteinuria in suspected preeclamptic patients.

METHOD: A total of 51 women with suspected pre-eclampsia from the maternal fetal clinic of our institution were retrospectively studied. The correlation between the UPCR …

BACKGROUND: Immune checkpoint inhibitors have revolutionized cancer treatment. However, they are associated with a unique spectrum of side effects, called immune-related adverse events (irAEs), which can cause significant morbidity and quickly progress to severe or life-threatening events if not treated promptly. Identifying predictive biomarkers for irAEs before immunotherapy initiation is therefore a critical area of research. Polymorphisms within the T-cell receptor beta (TCRB) variable (TRBV) gene have been implicated in autoimmune disease and may be mechanistically linked to irAEs. Objectives: To investigate the usability of neopterin in demonstrating the progression of COVID-19. As a result of uncontrolled activation of COVID-19 monocytes and macrophages, IFN gamma increases and the resulting inflammatory response causes organ damage. IFN released from T cells causes an increase in gamma neopterin levels. Therefore, measurement of neopterin levels can be used to indicate immune system activation and disease progression. Methods: The study was carried out prospectively in two different centers. The patients were divided into two groups (mild-moderate and severe) and clinical, laboratory, imaging findings and neopterin levels at hospitalization were compared. Results: 100 patients were …

Objectives: To assess the prevalence of these resistant strains in the overall isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae ( K. pneumoniae ) in hospital settings. Methods: This retrospective study was conducted from November 2020 to November 2021. The identification and antibiotic susceptibility testing were performed using standard laboratory methods according to the EUCAST standards. The detection of ESBL and carbapenemase production was performed using phenotypic methods such as E-test, combined-disk test with various inhibitors (ROSCO Diagnostica A/S), chromogenic medium for the detection of ESBL/carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) isolates, and the VITEK 2 Compact system (BioMerieux). Results: 944 isolates of K. pneumoniae were detected …

IMPORTANCE: Many pulse oximeters have been shown to overestimate oxygen saturation in persons of color, and this phenomenon has potential clinical implications. The relationship between overestimation of oxygen saturation with timing of COVID-19 medication delivery and clinical outcomes remains unknown.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between overestimation of oxygen saturation by pulse oximetry and delay in administration of COVID-19 therapy, hospital length of stay, risk of hospital readmission, and in-hospital mortality.

DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study included patients hospitalized for COVID-19 at 186 acute care facilities in the US with at least 1 functional arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2) …
