Here, There, And In-Between: On The Civilizing Process And Civilizational Analysis, Michael Palencia-Roth
Here, There, And In-Between: On The Civilizing Process And Civilizational Analysis, Michael Palencia-Roth
Comparative Civilizations Review
This essay presents a cautionary tale about certain problems with systematization and abstraction in comparative civilizational studies. It advocates instead for the analysis of single works, limited events, or particular figures, within larger issues pertaining to what is understood as a “civilization” or “culture”. It prioritizes certain aspects of the civilizing process: the here, or the civilizing and interpretive gaze; the there, or the Other that is the object of that gaze; and the in-between. It further suggests that insights and methods from Mikhail Bakhtin, Hans-Georg Gadamer and others from the humanities, social sciences, and philosophy can …
The Applicability Of Lessons From American Society For The European Union: Tolerance, Demographic Change, And Social Structure, Joseph Drew
Comparative Civilizations Review
While Americans have long tended to see our society and civilization as exceptional, in fact the civilization is primarily based on European precedent. We see ourselves, in the words of one of our most significant poets, Emma Lazarus, as the new colossus, “Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp cries she... I lift my lamp beside the golden door.” We claim to be an exception; that means that we are unique, different, what many, alluding to the New Testament as viewed by the Pilgrim founding fathers, have called “a shining city upon a hill.”2 And as “a beacon of hope.”

Material Consumption Of An 18th-Century Middling Urban Craftsman In Boston, Massachusetts, Lauryn E. Sharp
Material Consumption Of An 18th-Century Middling Urban Craftsman In Boston, Massachusetts, Lauryn E. Sharp
Graduate Masters Theses
This thesis studies how Caleb Parker, a blacksmith and craftsman who lived in the early- to mid-18th century, viewed and utilized refinement and genteel behaviors using the glass and ceramic artifacts recovered from a privy at his home at 23 Unity Street in Boston’s North End. Background research explores the concept of “partible refinement,” which speaks to the notion that the “middling sorts'' at this time, including craftspeople like Caleb Parker, had the agency to selectively use different components of refined gentility according to their personal consumer choice and tastes. This resulted in middling sorts incorporating both traditional and modern …
Limitations & Liberation: Republican Motherhood And Female Advancement In Nineteenth Century America, Hannah Russell
Limitations & Liberation: Republican Motherhood And Female Advancement In Nineteenth Century America, Hannah Russell
Graduate Masters Theses
First introduced by Linda Kerber in the 1970s, Republican Motherhood is the idea that described the role women were expected to play in the years following the American Revolution. Characterized by an expanded sphere of influence through the education of her sons to be prosperous future leaders of the nation and her daughters to be future mothers of American sons, Republican Motherhood played a significant role in the continuing development of gender relations in the early republic. To show the ways in which women utilized Republican Motherhood to reach self-actualization, I analyze the lives of Judith Sargent Murray, Catharine Beecher, …

On Monday 22 June 1772, the English jurist William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield, delivered his oral verdict as Chief Justice of the Court of King’s Bench in the famous case involving the enslaved Afro-British servant James Somerset to declare that only an Act of Parliament could legalize domestic bondage and that Somerset was a free man. For the estimated 15,000 captives living in the English metropole, Somerset v. Stewart effectively undercut the Anglo-Atlantic slavocracy that had hid behind legal technicalities and extrajudicial decrees defending domestic bondage since the last quarter of the seventeenth century. In order to offer a …

Examining The Relationship Between Spelling Achievement And Academic Achievement In Community College Students, Tambra Lee Riggs-Gutiérrez
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
The relationship between spelling achievement and academic achievement in community college students was investigated in this quantitative study. The research questions focused on whether a brief (under 15 minutes) spelling screening assessment may or may not predict student academic achievement of course grade points earned in an entry-level English class or cumulative grade point average. Demographic and descriptive data were also analyzed. A linear regression analysis design was used in this study. Participants for the study were 55 students from two geographically distant campuses of one community college in the Commonwealth of Virginia in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United …

We integrated a mechanistic wildfire simulation system with an agent-based landscape change model to investigate the feedbacks among climate change, population growth, development, landowner decision-making, vegetative succession, and wildfire. Our goal was to develop an adaptable simulation platform for anticipating risk-mitigation tradeoffs in a fire-prone wildland– urban interface (WUI) facing conditions outside the bounds of experience. We describe how five social and ecological system (SES) submodels interact over time and space to generate highly variable alternative futures even within the same scenario as stochastic elements in simulated wildfire, succession, and landowner decisions create large sets of unique, path-dependent futures for …
Disaffection And Othering: Beyond Our Coordinates, Christen Kadkhodai
Disaffection And Othering: Beyond Our Coordinates, Christen Kadkhodai
War, Diplomacy, and Society (MA) Theses
"Othering” is just one of many tools nations use during war time to garner support for the war effort. “Othering” in media often goes undetected, a subtle framing of one’s own viewpoint as the viewpoint and the gaze, often at the exclusion and alienation of others. This collection of essays explores how individuals and institutions “Othered” during wartime. Essays “A Review of Walt Disney’s Life and ‘Othering’” and “Walt Disney’s ‘Reluctant Dragon’ and the 1941 Strike,” study how and why Walt Disney “Othered” certain audiences in his films The Reluctant Dragon, Saludos Amigos, and The Three Caballeros. …
Bankers As Immoral? Some Parallels And Differences Between Aquinas’S Views On Usury And Marxian Views Of Banking And Credit, Thomas E. Lambert
Bankers As Immoral? Some Parallels And Differences Between Aquinas’S Views On Usury And Marxian Views Of Banking And Credit, Thomas E. Lambert
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Since ancient times the practices and ethics of bankers and banking in general have undergone a great deal of criticism. While lending is motivated by profit, and while households are not explicitly coerced into borrowing money, the justice of a system which exploits workers and at the same time encourages them to borrow money in order to maintain a certain standard of living can be viewed as sometimes unfair and perhaps immoral. The value of goods, according to St. Thomas Aquinas and Karl Marx, should mostly reflect the value of labor embodied in them, and for that reason, labor should …

Exploring The Effects Of Cannabidiol On Psychological Health, Cognitive Function, Neural Health, And Natural Killer Cells, Arjun Ramani
Dissertations
Cannabidiol (CBD), a non-psychotropic cannabis sativa derivative, is gaining attention as a potential promotor of neurological function and cognitive health and as a potential anti-inflammatory compound, although these claims lack evidence-based support from the scientific community. The purpose of this study was to determine whether 8 weeks of 2 doses, 40 mg (CB40) or 20 mg (CB20), of CBD containing beverages will improve psychological health, cognitive function, neural health as well as NK and NKT cell quantity and NK cell function when compared to a control vehicle beverage (CBDV) and a calorie-matched placebo beverage (PLAC) in a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, …

Central American Saints: The Formation And Preservation Of Latter-Day Saint Community And Identity In El Salvador And Guatemala, 1960–1992, Hovan T. Lawton
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
After World War II, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints grew dramatically throughout Latin America, with much of this growth happening after 1960. My thesis studies how the growing numbers of Latter-day Saints in Guatemala and El Salvador (between 1960 and 1992) developed strong and meaningful religious community and became more and more committed to their new Latter-day Saint identity. Being a Latter-day Saint in these two countries was similar in many ways to the experience of being a Latter-day Saint in the U.S., but there were also some important differences. My thesis considers what made the Salvadoran …

Satellite-Based Shoreline Detection Along High-Energy Macrotidal Coasts And Influence Of Beach State, Aikaterini Konstantinou, Tim Scott, Gerd Masselink, Kit Stokes, Daniel Conley, Bruno Castelle
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Earth observation coupled with novel image analysis techniques now present a unique and powerful tool for the historical study of shoreline change at local to global scale. However, satellite-derived shoreline (SDS) data is limited in certain areas and is associated with large uncertainties relating to environmental factors, tidal range, and wave action. We use 14 years of monthly topographic surveys at two macrotidal sites in the UK representing end members of beach type (reflective, dissipative) to investigate the influence of tidal elevation and wave action on SDS accuracy. We find that applying appropriate water level corrections can significantly improve SDS …
The Influence Of Climate And Landscape On Allocapnia Mohri Distribution In Arkansas, Brianna Leigh Annaratone
The Influence Of Climate And Landscape On Allocapnia Mohri Distribution In Arkansas, Brianna Leigh Annaratone
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Stoneflies are a globally threatened aquatic insect order. In Arkansas, a diverse group of winter stonefly (Capniidae: Allocapnia) have not been surveyed since the 1980s, likely because species-level identification requires the rarely-collected adult form. Allocapnia mohri, a regional endemic, was previously commonly found in mountainous, intermittent streams from the Ouachita Mountains ecoregion north to the Ozark Highlands, but no species distributional models including land use or climate variables exist to our knowledge. We collected adults from 70 stream reaches from the historic Arkansas range from November to April 2020 and 2021. We modeled distributions using random forest (RF) models populated …

Traversing The Inner Courtyard To The Public Sphere: Exploring Lalithambika Antharjanam’S Short Stories As Narratives Of Protest In Early Twentieth Century Kerala, Revathy Hemachandran, Maya Vinai
Journal of International Women's Studies
This essay analyzes women writing about their experience in the changing socio-cultural and political context of the early twentieth century and especially in the face of the global, national, and regional transformations that Kerala underwent. The essay argues that the short stories of Lalithambika Antharjanam subverted the popular representation of antharjanams in the early 20th century as impassive, oppressed, and vulnerable subjects and provided alternative ways to conceptualize an antharjanam as a feminist trailblazer with a strong voice of protest. Her writing exposes her first-hand experiences of gender discrimination practiced in families as related to her caste and family lineage. …

BACKGROUND: In an analysis of the primary outcome of this phase 3 trial, patients with early relapsed or refractory large B-cell lymphoma who received axicabtagene ciloleucel (axi-cel), an autologous anti-CD19 chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy, as second-line treatment had significantly longer event-free survival than those who received standard care. Data were needed on longer-term outcomes.
METHODS: In this trial, we randomly assigned patients with early relapsed or refractory large B-cell lymphoma in a 1:1 ratio to receive either axi-cel or standard care (two to three cycles of chemoimmunotherapy followed by high-dose chemotherapy with autologous stem-cell transplantation in patients who had …
Writing Trauma At Home: The Poetics Of Testimony In Iraq’S Literary And Cultural Production, Imran Alkhalifah
Writing Trauma At Home: The Poetics Of Testimony In Iraq’S Literary And Cultural Production, Imran Alkhalifah
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This dissertation explores the unconventional forms of testimony to trauma in Iraq. Due to a long history of war and/or sectarian violence, Iraq’s literary and cultural production provide unique ways of representing traumatic experience. These representations, I argue, challenge the predominate western notions of representing trauma. The unique ways of writing/expressing trauma examined in this dissertation offer a new perspective of reading trauma as opposed to the postmodern trauma aesthetics that highlights fragmentation, repetition, and dissociation as symptoms of traumatic experience. This hegemonic approach has led to a deprived investigation of the unique social and historical contexts in which trauma …

Abul Kalam Azad And His Political Role In India (1905-1922), Naim Kadhim Abed Hammadi, Asaad Hameed Abu Shanna
Uruk Journal of Human Sciences
Abu Al-Kalam Azad was considered one of the prominent political figures in India. He began his political activity after the partition of Bengal in 1905 AD, organizing secret Hindu organizations against British colonialism. However, his political philosophy changed after he traveled to the Arab and Muslim countries in 1908 AD, and informed him about their revolutionary ideas, so he took the path of the press. He established the two magazines (Al-Hilal and Al-Balagh) in the Urdu language, which had a prominent role in mobilizing the Indians (Hindu and Muslims) together against Britain, which disturbed the latter, and they had to …

Cosmic Hamartiology: Using An Apocalyptic Paul Hermeneutic To Exposit Chaos Monster Passages, Peter Terrell Bingham Jr.
Cosmic Hamartiology: Using An Apocalyptic Paul Hermeneutic To Exposit Chaos Monster Passages, Peter Terrell Bingham Jr.
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Ancient mythology, precisely that of the Ancient Near East, includes the treacherous characters of chaos monsters who cause disorder due to their destructive supernatural influence in the natural world. Scripture includes chaos monsters of various sorts that cause the same destruction in the wake of their cosmic work. While an array of methodologies has been developed to study chaos monsters in the Ancient Near East considering their sources—i.e., Mesopotamian, Babylonian, Akkadian, etc.—there is a lack of a Biblical hermeneutic to adequately exposit chaos monster passages in Scripture. In the Apocalyptic Perspective on Paul, scholars have sought to develop a way …

The Leadership Effectiveness Of The Judean Kings/Queen, Charles H. Gaulden
PhD in Organizational Leadership
In this study, the leadership effectiveness of the Judean kings/queen during the divided kingdom was examined. The research methodology utilized was a multi-case study of the Judean rulers through an exegetical analysis of 2 Chronicles 10-36. A multifaceted method was utilized for genre inquiry to explore the unique properties of the book of Chronicles. The study placed biblical literature into the history genre through the Chronicler’s varied conveyance methods. The textual units linked with the narrative analysis of the discovered location, repetition, and themes. Some intertextual engagement overlapped with archaeology, Kings’ records, and prophetic literature. The researcher identified seven leadership …

A Tribal Chief And A Colonial Legislation: The Excluded Areas Act Of 1846, Amrita Tulika
A Tribal Chief And A Colonial Legislation: The Excluded Areas Act Of 1846, Amrita Tulika
Socio-Legal Review
This article explores the nature of colonial sovereignty from a Hobbesian lens of ‘state necessity’ by taking the example of the Excluded Areas Act of 1846. This Act was a special law that placed the Bhil tribes of the Khandesh and Ahmadnagar districts (in present-day Maharashtra) outside the purview of the general laws in the Bombay Presidency. By drawing from archival sources, including records of the East India Company and legislative proceedings, the paper contrasts pre-colonial tribal autonomy with authoritarian and paternalistic colonial rule by a British Agent under the Act. First, the paper locates its argument on colonial rule …

Etiologies And Predictors Of 30-Day Readmission In Heart Failure: An Updated Analysis, Akhil Jain, Shilpkumar Arora, Viral Patel, Maharshi Raval, Karnav Modi, Nirav Arora, Rupak Desai, Behnam Bozorgnia, Raphael Bonita
Einstein Health Papers
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Readmissions in heart failure (HF), historically reported as 20%, contribute to significant patient morbidity and high financial cost to the healthcare system. The changing population landscape and risk factor dynamics mandate periodic epidemiologic reassessment of HF readmissions.
METHODS: National Readmission Database (NRD, 2019) was used to identify HF-related hospitalizations and evaluated for demographic, admission characteristics, and comorbidity differences between patients readmitted vs. those not readmitted at 30-days. Causes of readmission and predictors of all-cause, HF-specific, and non-HF-related readmissions were analyzed.
RESULTS: Of 48,971 HF patients, the readmitted cohort was younger (mean 67.4 vs. 68.9 years, p≤0.001), had …

Make All The Laws You Want: The Catholic Left Against Legal Liberalism, Circa 1968, Sara Mayeux
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
In this article, I bring the history of Catholic radicalism into conversation with legal history. Although there is an extensive historical literature on Catholic responses to the Vietnam War and other 1960s upheavals, this historiography has remained siloed from legal scholarship. Legal scholars (particularly outside of Catholic legal circles) have devoted little attention to figures like Merton, Furfey, and participants in the Catholic “ultraresistance” against the Vietnam War. In scholarly accounts of how social movements remade and reacted to constitutional law, Catholic activism is typically discussed, if at all, in the context of contraception and abortion debates. In broad outlines, …
