Photojournalism, Public Health, And Politicization: Analyzing Photographic News Coverage Of Health Crises In The 20th And 21st Centuries, Hans C. Schmidt
Photojournalism, Public Health, And Politicization: Analyzing Photographic News Coverage Of Health Crises In The 20th And 21st Centuries, Hans C. Schmidt
Iowa Journal of Communication
While political division has been present in the American press since its start, politicized and polarized content is now stretching beyond straightforward political news – where such content might be expected – and is increasingly seen in other news categories, including science, medical, and health journalism. This development has been especially notable during the COVID-19 pandemic, when medical and health reporting frequently became coopted by a political narrative. This study builds on research into the politicization of pandemic and medical reporting with an investigation of pandemic-era photojournalism. Using a content analysis, this study aims to provide greater insight into the …
Cognitive Challenge As A Probe To Expose Sex- And Age-Related Differences During Static Contractions, Hugo M. Pereira, Sandra K. Hunter
Cognitive Challenge As A Probe To Expose Sex- And Age-Related Differences During Static Contractions, Hugo M. Pereira, Sandra K. Hunter
Exercise Science Faculty Research and Publications
Despite activities of daily living being frequently performed simultaneously with a cognitive task, motor function is often investigated in isolation, which can hinder the applicability of findings. This brief review presents evidence that 1) performing a cognitive challenge simultaneously with a motor task can negatively impact force steadiness and fatigability of limb muscles during a static contraction, 2) the negative impact on old adults (>65 years old), particularly older women is greater than young when a cognitive challenge is simultaneously performed with a static motor task, 3) age-related mechanisms potentially explain impairments in motor performance in the presence of …

Best Management And Egg Washing Practices For Small-Scale Poultry Producers To Improve Food Safety, Julie Bosland
Open Access Dissertations
The goal of this dissertation research was to determine the best management and egg washing practices for small-scale egg producers and backyard chicken owners to help improve food safety. The main goals were to establish the most effective management and egg washing procedures to reduce total coliform bacteria load on eggshells and increase egg cleanliness. To determine the methods used for experiments in chapters 3-5, a survey was conducted on egg handling, washing and management techniques in backyard poultry and small-scale producers within the Northeastern U.S. The effect of management practices and egg washing methods on the eggshell cuticle was …

Bee Visitation To Three Clover Species (Trifolium Spp.), Common Selfheal (Prunella Vulgaris) And Creeping Thyme (Thymus Serpyllum), Julia J. Vieira
Open Access Master's Theses
Native bees are experiencing global declines due to multiple factors including habitat loss, pesticide use, pathogens, and climate change. Several recent bumble bee studies across New England have documented declines in species richness throughout the region. Bee visitation to different flower species in bloom concurrently can be influenced by actual floral preferences, timing of nectar and pollen presentation, relative abundances of the flower species, and other factors. I assessed bee abundance, diversity, and selective foraging patterns in southern Rhode Island on four planted flower species: white clover (Trifolium repens L.), medium and mammoth red clover (Trifolium pratense L.), …
Better Solutions To Increasing Covid-19 Vaccine Access: Giving Away Vaccines Rather Than Vaccine Formulas, Tristen Prouse
Better Solutions To Increasing Covid-19 Vaccine Access: Giving Away Vaccines Rather Than Vaccine Formulas, Tristen Prouse
Honors Program Theses
The debate over giving away the COVID-19 vaccine formulas is a political hot topic. Mention of a Trade-Related Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) waiver proposed in early 2021 suggested violating patent law to give away the vaccine formulas. While a tempting option, many problems exist with this solution. Violating patent law to give away the vaccine formulas disincentivizes innovation, undermines confidence in vaccine safety, and harms America’s geopolitical objectives. Patent law can be inefficient and is not the only way to incentivize innovation, but it is here to stay. Instead, the United States should give away vaccines rather than vaccine formulas …
Constitutional Review Of Federal Tax Legislation, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah, Yoseph M. Edrey
Constitutional Review Of Federal Tax Legislation, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah, Yoseph M. Edrey
Articles
What does the Constitution mean when it says that “The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States” (U.S. Const. Article I, Section 8, Clause 1)?
The definition of “tax” for constitutional purposes has become important considering the Supreme Court’s 2012 decision in National Federation of Independent Business v. Sebelius (“NFIB”), in which Chief Justice Roberts for the Court upheld the constitutionality of the individual mandate of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (“ACA”) under the taxing …

Imperfect Interventions: A Review Of Current And Novel Treatment Approaches For Maladaptive Perfectionism, Sarah Loew
Imperfect Interventions: A Review Of Current And Novel Treatment Approaches For Maladaptive Perfectionism, Sarah Loew
Research Papers
Transdiagnostic in nature, perfectionism acts as a predisposing and maintaining factor for various psychological and health conditions affecting individuals worldwide. With the prevalence of maladaptive perfectionism increasing, the implications of individuals struggling with perfectionism are significant. Consequently, it is incumbent upon researchers to continue examining the complexities of perfectionism as a construct and develop effective treatments to decrease perfectionism and associated symptoms. Thus, the current review of literature examines current and novel psychotherapy interventions from a categorical or dimensional viewpoint and the efficacy of the intervention for perfectionism and co-occurring symptoms. Further, the review discusses and proposes future research recommendations …
Economic Analysis Of Alexander County, Jeffrey Myers
Economic Analysis Of Alexander County, Jeffrey Myers
Research Papers
Since 2020, economies across the country and world have been recovering from one of the most unique and impactful events in modern history, COVID-19. The pandemic had an impact on both regional economies and national economies alike. Unlike most counties, Alexander County, Illinois was struggling before the pandemic. There were plans in place by the state government to hopefully improve the economic well-being of the area, but most of those projects were paused in the wake of COVID-19. This paper will examine the history of the county, various economic sectors, and the challenges faced ahead. The paper will conclude with …

The Lethal Impact Of Defendant And Victim Characteristics On Capital Punishment, Mackenzie Meyer
Research Papers
The current paper reviews the key points of research on the impact of defendant race, victim race, and victim gender on capital sentencing decisions. Each of these factors, as well as a theoretical framework applicable to the factors of defendant race, victim race, and victim gender on capital sentencing decisions, are explored and examined in this effort. All of the sections are intended to complement each other and provide a more comprehensive look into how and why demographic characteristics may shape capital punishment outcomes and where to go from here. It is important to understand disparities in capital punishment because …

Curriculum Strategy To Increase College Student’S Motivation, Ability And Opportunity Resulting In Reduction In Wasted Food, Sarah D. Brunnig
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Concerns about Food Loss and Waste (FLW) have been rapidly growing worldwide as it came to be understood how the loss of about one-third of the edible food produced globally leads to environmental damage, leads to loss of about USD 1 trillion and keeps food from hungry people. Consumers in developed countries account for the largest majority of food that is wasted. College presents an excellent opportunity to reach young adults as they are developing their identity, self-efficacy and life skills. Utilizing the Motivation-Ability-Opportunity Framework, this research’s overall goal was to find a Curriculum Strategy to engage allied health students …

Case Study And Evaluation Of The Implementation Of Restorative Family Conferences In An Alternative Placement School, Linda Faye Mcghghy
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Despite the lack of research supporting zero tolerance policies and practices, these exclusionary practices and policies have resulted in the doubling of the number of students suspended from school. They contribute to exclusionary consequences and, in effect, these practices create negative academic, social and emotional outcomes for students often resulting in students entering the criminal justice system (school-to-prison-pipeline), which disproportionately impact Black students, students with disabilities, and children living in poverty. These facts are especially troubling since there is ample research that discipline practices supporting student physical, mental and social well being such as Social Emotional Learning (SEL), Multi-Tiered System …

"I'M Just Very Open To Trying New Things": Past Sexual Experiences And Sexual Curiosity In Bisexual Women, Rosalyn Zacarias
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Bisexuals make up a large percentage of the LGBTQ+ community. Despite this, they remain invisible in the literature. Sexual curiosity is also a concept with limited and confusing literature. The purpose of the study is to look past sexual experiences and their influence on sexual curiosity in bisexual women. The contribution of this study aims to better understand how bisexual women make meaning out of their experiences and highlight the importance of sexual health research. Data was gathered with a sample of 6 bisexual women ranging from 19-29 years old using semi-structured interviews. Three superordinate themes and five subordinate themes …

The Blue Wall Of Conformity: The Experiences Of Marginalized Police Officers, Jamie Stephens
The Blue Wall Of Conformity: The Experiences Of Marginalized Police Officers, Jamie Stephens
Research Papers
Intersectionality describes the lived experiences that are uniquely shaped by an individual’s intersecting identities. Understanding these experiences and how they vary from context to context can be insightful for society in understanding mechanisms of oppression. Police departments have historically upheld toxic masculine standards that lead to discrimination against society and those within their walls. This paper seeks to understand why marginalized officers commit to the police subculture and behave in similar fashions as their privileged counterparts despite being discriminated against on and off the job and experiencing job stress and dissatisfaction. I argue that marginalized officers commit to the culture …

Insects are a readily available source of chitosan due to their high reproductive rates, ease of breeding, and resistance to changes in their ecosystem. This study aimed to extract chitosan from several widespread insects: Blaps lethifera (CS-BL), Pimelia fernandezlopezi (CS-PF), and Musca domestica (CS-MD). The study was also extended to using the obtained chitosans in removing methylene blue dye (MB) from wastewater. The source of the chitosan, the initial concentration of MB dye, and the reaction time were chosen as the working parameters. The experiments were designed using a central composite design (CCD) based on the dye removal efficiency as …

Unraveling The Hispanic Health Paradox, Jose Fernandez, Monica Garcia-Perez, Sandra Orozco-Aleman
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
In 2019, Hispanics in the US had a life expectancy advantage of 3.0 years and 7.1 years over non-Hispanic Whites and non-Hispanic Blacks, respectively, despite having real-household income values 26 percentage points lower than Non-Hispanic White households. Hispanics appear to have equal or even better health outcomes relative to non-Hispanic Whites across various health measures. This is known as the Hispanic health paradox. This paper underscores the importance of disaggregating Hispanics by ancestry and age profile when discussing the paradox across key health outcomes. It also provides an overview of the leading explanations, such as the salmon bias and the …

Supreme Court Legitimacy Under Threat? The Role Of Cues In How The Public Responds To Supreme Court Decisions., Laura Moyer, Scott S. Boddery, Jeff Yates, Lindsay Caudill
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Understanding how the public views the Court and its rulings is crucial to assessing its institutional stability. However, as scholars note, “People are broadly supportive of the court and believe in its ‘legitimacy’—that is, that Supreme Court rulings should be respected and followed. But we don’t know that much about whether people actually agree with the case outcomes themselves.” In this article, we highlight empirical research investigating the factors that affect public agreement with Court decisions, highlighting recent developments from our work. At the onset, it is to note that the public generally hears about the Court’s decisions from media …

Adopting Nationality, Irina D. Manta, Cassandra Burke Robertson

Contrary to popular belief, when a child is adopted from abroad by an American citizen and brought to the United States, that child does not always become an American citizen. Many adoptees have not discovered until years later (sometimes far into adulthood) that they are not actually citizens, and some likely still do not know. To address this problem, the Child Citizenship Act of 2000 (CCA) was enacted to automate citizenship for certain international adoptees, but it does not cover everyone. Tens of thousands of adoptees still live under the assumption that they are American citizens when, in fact, they …

927: Dabbing Lung Injury Managed By Vv Ecmo, Eric Snowden, Amanda Godfrey
Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Meeting Abstracts
INTRODUCTION: E-cigarette or vaping-associated lung injury (EVALI) is an uncommon complication of e-cigarettes or vaping. Most cases are associated with tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) containing products. “Dabbing” refers to the process of ingesting high concentrations of THC-containing oils or waxes with butane solvents to vaporize cannabinoids for inhalation. Another distinction is the presence of impurities and unpurged butane in the vapors inhaled by the users.
DESCRIPTION: A 29-year-old male presented with cough, dyspnea, and fever seven days prior to admission. He reported smoking marijuana but denied vaping. Initial chest radiograph demonstrated multifocal pneumonia. PCR for SARS-CoV-2 was negative. He required four liters …

Research Review: "Food Insecurity Among Veterans Examining The Discrepancy Between Veteran Food Insecurity And Use Of The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (Snap)", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University
Institute for Veterans and Military Families
This research review addresses food insecurity among veterans, linking it to adverse health outcomes and increased suicide risk. Despite routine screenings by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, food-insecure veterans have lower enrollment in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) than nonveterans. The research examines nuanced reasons for veterans' SNAP participation, highlighting disparities in initiation, termination, and benefit utilization patterns. Older veterans and those with disabilities are identified as underserved groups, emphasizing the need to improve SNAP accessibility for them. The findings also stress the importance of early interventions to support at-risk service members. This IVMF review also provides valuable …

Research Review: "Risk Factors Explaining Military Deaths From Suicide, 2008-2017: A Latent Class Analysis", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University
Institute for Veterans and Military Families
This research review is an analysis of a study of 2,660 military suicides from 2008 to 2017 identified relationship dissolution as the most prevalent risk factor, often combined with mental health issues, job problems, or combat experience. The research underscores the need for comprehensive suicide prevention strategies that address both individual and relationship-related factors. Future research should explore the interplay of risk factors, the effectiveness of relationship-based interventions, and improved data collection for better prevention.
Orienting Toward Party Choice: A Simple Self-Determination Tool For Mediators, Robert A. Baruch Bush, Dan Berstein
Orienting Toward Party Choice: A Simple Self-Determination Tool For Mediators, Robert A. Baruch Bush, Dan Berstein
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
This paper introduces a new method and tool for mediators to use as a way of keeping party self-determination foremost in their practice. The tool is based on the "checklist" model used to ensure best practices for healthcare professionals in hospitals, and also on discourse analysis methods to identify key markers of party actions to exercise self-determination in mediation sessions. The self-determination checklist is a simple way for mediators to orient their interventions so as to support the parties' own deliberation and decision-making efforts.
