Exploration Of Nurses' Knowledge About Healthcare For Transgender Patients, Elizabeth Kempt
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractThe transgender population is growing, and along with the population growth, the healthcare needs for gender transitioning of both medical and surgical procedures. Registered nurses (RNs) who care for hospitalized transgender patients are required to be knowledgeable about their care, yet little is known about what nurses know about the healthcare of the transgender patient. The purpose of this basic qualitative study, guided by Benner’s novice to expert theory, was to explore the knowledge and perceptions of RNs regarding healthcare of transgender persons undergoing transition to the opposite gender. Social media and snowball sampling were used to recruit 10 RNs …

Factors Influencing Newly Licensed Nurse Position Selection And Retention, Melinda S. Kidder
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Newly licensed nurse turnover can be costly, causing a mismatch between supply and demand for nurse staffing needs, lowering quality outcomes, and decreasing patient satisfaction. This quantitative study was conducted to identify the relationship between why newly licensed nurses selected their first position and their retention in that initial position. Other factors examined in relation to retention were unit most worked, age, race, sex, and education level. Irvine and Evans’s theory of job satisfaction and Maslow’s hierarchy of needs guided the analysis of the data. Secondary data used were the Newly Licensed Registered Nurse New Cohort 3 Survey from 2016 …
The Reconciliation Of Cognitive Dissonance Among Social Workers In Substance Use Treatment Settings, Miranda Ashley Kieler
The Reconciliation Of Cognitive Dissonance Among Social Workers In Substance Use Treatment Settings, Miranda Ashley Kieler
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Although harm reduction (HR) and abstinence-based treatment approaches are both useful in addiction treatment, the former is less accepted and integrated into practice. Social workers who embrace an HR approach but who work at substance abuse treatment facilities that are abstinence based may experience cognitive dissonance because they perceive their work role to be incompatible with social work practice values and education. Little was known regarding how practitioners with a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree experience and reconcile cognitive dissonance related to their HR education and abstinence-only practice in substance use treatment centers. To address this gap in the …
The Association Between Working Habits And Hypertension Among First Generation African Immigrants, Olalekan Kilo
The Association Between Working Habits And Hypertension Among First Generation African Immigrants, Olalekan Kilo
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Even though hypertension affects people of all races, it is more prevalent among African Americans. However, recent research has revealed that the prevalence of hypertension is progressively increasing across Africa. African immigrants in the United States are the least-studied immigrant group prone to health inequalities when compared to their African American counterparts. To help bridge this gap, a secondary data analysis of a cross-sectional study was conducted to investigate the association between working habits (hours worked, diet at work), length of stay in the United States, and hypertension rates for first-generation African immigrants residing in the United States. The study …

Relationship Experiences Of Long-Term Partners Of Individuals With Narcissistic Traits, Tamara Betty-Jean Knott
Relationship Experiences Of Long-Term Partners Of Individuals With Narcissistic Traits, Tamara Betty-Jean Knott
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The phenomenon of narcissism is well-documented and has garnered much attention from the scientific community. However, a facet of this subject that has been largely unstudied involves the consequences that narcissistic relationships have on intimates. Typically, an individual with narcissistic traits (INT) most negatively affects the romantic partner. Still, there has been very little in the way of academic knowledge, understanding of partner experiences, or how to help from a mental health standpoint. Research has implied that partnering with an INT entails distinct forms of emotional abuse (EA), resulting in the development of unique psychological distress. This qualitative narrative study …

Gang Diversion Programs In The Success Of Reducing Youth Gang Membership, Francis Songtiib Laari
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractThe rate of youth involvement in gang membership and crime has become a problem in Fairfax County, Virginia. It has increased violent crimes, drug trade, and incarceration rates for youths and decreased child school graduation rates. Youth gang membership is a significant public issue with broad mental and psychological implications for the child, family, and community because of the potential to commit a crime. Early exposure to gangs and violent neighborhoods can profoundly and negatively impact the residents. Researchers have explored why many children join gangs, but none have examined gang diversion programs' success in reducing youth gang membership. In …

Relationships Between Stress, Family Support, And Resources Among Custodial Grandparents In Appalachia, Yvonne Sherii Lee
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The Appalachian region has experienced a substantial increase in the number of grandparent-headed households providing care to grandchildren. Custodial parenting is not a typical responsibility for many grandparents and can be challenging. The specific problem addressed in this research study was the high level of stress experienced by many custodial grandparents. The theoretical foundation of the current study was based on Selye’s stress theory, which was introduced in 1936 and examined biological stress that he referred to as “the syndrome of being sick.” The purpose of this quantitative, nonexperimental, and correlational study was to examine the predictive relationship that custodial …
Mental Health Treatment And The Criminal Justice System, Susana Lehan-Trasente
Mental Health Treatment And The Criminal Justice System, Susana Lehan-Trasente
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The criminal justice system has established interventions for those who have mental illness and have been charged with criminal complaints. In New York State, the Mental Health Court has been established to address these issues and is to be used by all counties. However, the treatment and probation interventions vary from county to county. Saratoga County uses a Single Point of Access (SPOA) which receives referrals from the general court and probation officers. SPOA refers clients to a variety of treatment interventions available in the county. In Monroe County, the Mental Health Court refers the criminally involved/mentally ill individual to …
I’M Ok: Black Women’S Perceptions Of Vulnerability And Coping, Bridget Lewis
I’M Ok: Black Women’S Perceptions Of Vulnerability And Coping, Bridget Lewis
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Within the social work profession, there has been limited understanding of tailoring treatment and coping strategies specific to Black women. The parallelism of Black women and strength has created a generational, internal conflict with maintaining the cultural label known as the strong Black woman (SBW) and stigma related to seeking help to improve mental health. The stigma associated with seeking help has hindered Black women from communicating thoughts or behaviors that categorize vulnerability. Grounded in the SBW collective theory and Black womanist theory, this study explored how the SBW stereotype impacts the communication on vulnerability and coping strategies Black women …

Strategies Organizational Leaders Use To Engage Employees, Latisha Valencia Lewis
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
For many organizations, employee engagement is a major component that drives a business’s productivity, performance, and profitability. Some healthcare leaders lack strategies to engage employees. Grounded in Kahn’s employee engagement theory, the purpose of this qualitative single case study was to explore strategies healthcare leaders use to engage employees. The participants were eight healthcare leaders in a greater Atlanta, Georgia, healthcare facility who successfully implemented strategies to engage employees. Data were collected from Press Ganey quarterly engagement scores and semistructured interviews. Data were analyzed using Yin’s five-phase process, from which three themes emerged: (a) mentorship, (b) leadership, and (c) teamwork. …
Association Between Antidepressant Adherence And Major Depressive Disorder Complications, Philip Lisinge
Association Between Antidepressant Adherence And Major Depressive Disorder Complications, Philip Lisinge
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Despite evidence that antidepressants are more effective at treating major depressive disorder (MDD) symptoms, there is growing evidence that MDD management is still hampered by nonadherence to antidepressant treatment regimens. Researchers have suggested that MDD, if untreated, might lead to MDD-related complications, but other researchers have argued that adherence to antidepressants can lead to these same MDD-related complications. This quantitative cross-sectional study used primary data collected from 298 volunteers to examine the association between MDD-related complications and antidepressant adherence to clarify these diverging opinions. The study’s objective was to provide evidence to accept or reject the premise that antidepressant adherence …

Stories Of Licensed Counseling Supervisors Who Identify As Wounded Healers, Carolyn Litteral
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Although a large percentage of counselors who are wounded healers eventually become clinical counseling supervisors, little is known about the effects on clinical supervision. Counseling supervisors have the responsibility of gatekeeping, managing client care, and modeling counseling for counselors-in-training; the process is likely affected by woundedness as is the counseling process. The purpose of the current qualitative narrative study was to identify the stories of wounded healers as clinical counseling supervisors to recognize how supervision is affected and influenced by being a wounded healer. The data were analyzed using the theoretical lens of existentialism and the conceptual framework of the …

Quality Improvement Initiatives And Interventions For Decreasing Falls In The Hospital Setting, Fredlyn Lolange
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Patient falls in health care settings are a widespread and severe problem, and they often happen as a result of a complex set of causes. In the United States, between 3.3 and 11.5 falls occur per 1,000 patient days. Reducing the incidence of falls in a health care setting would bring significant positive change and decrease the incidence of harm to patients in the hospital setting. This staff education project’s purpose is based on addressing falls, a safety concern and a health issue that continues to put patients at an increased risk. Theories used to inform the project include the …
