Nursing Research & Professional Development Conference

Background

Cesarean section (C-section) delivery can be a lifesaving procedure but is overused and can also be dangerous. Improvements focused on ‘first births’ (nulliparous, term, singleton, vertex (NTSV) deliveries) help prevent repeat C-sections.

Local Problem

The C-section rate for NTSV births in the Labor and Delivery (L&D) unit at a large, urban, Level 1 trauma center was 31.9% in January 2022, indicating C-section overuse and initiating a a unit goal to reduce the rate.

Method

We shared current C-section rates, required computer-based training modules about C-sections and vaginal births, discussed vaginal versus C-section criteria for each patient during morning huddles, …

Understanding Incarcerated Education: A Review Of The Digital And Gender Inequality Impacts Of Accessibility And Inclusivity Of Higher Education For Incarcerated Students, Bianca R. Parry Phd

Journal of Prison Education Research

Education in the correctional environment is endorsed as an effective rehabilitative tool linked to reducing recidivism and improving reintegration. Unfortunately, while researchers from the Global North are particularly active on the subject of the accessibility of digital education in corrections, the same cannot be said for the Global South. Of further concern is that few of the studies conducted have focused specifically on incarcerated women’s access to education. As discussed in the literature review to follow, research regarding higher education in corrections has the potential for expanding academics, stakeholders, and policy makers understanding of incarcerated students’ pathways towards education attainment. …

The Challenges Of Minoritized Contingent Faculty In Higher Education, Edna Chun, Alvin Evans Nov 2023

The Challenges Of Minoritized Contingent Faculty In Higher Education, Edna Chun, Alvin Evans

Navigating Careers in Higher Education Series

The Challenges of Minoritized Contingent Faculty in Higher Education offers a probing and unvarnished look at the employment challenges of these faculty members in four-year institutions. With dramatic shifts in the faculty workforce and nearly three-quarters of instructional positions in United States institutions now off the tenure track, contingent faculty have become the essential, frontline workers of higher education. Remarkably little research attention has focused on the experiences of minoritized contingent faculty in this new academic underclass. Based on in-depth interviews coupled with extensive research, the book highlights the double marginalization that can occur due to secondary employment status in …

Co-Limitation Of Resources Reveals Adaptations Of A Tropical Tree To Heterogeneous Environments Along An Elevational Cline, Indira Paudel, Kyle M.E. Rose, Simon M. Landhausser, Douglass F. Jacobs

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

Introduction: Plant species often exhibit significant variation in functional traits in populations along elevational gradients to cope with varying stress conditions. While plant development has been assumed to be most limited by a single resource, growing evidence suggests the potential for interactions of co-limiting resources to impact plant performance. Here, we aimed to determine how light, nitrogen, and water availability influence the growth and physiology of different populations of koa (Acacia koa), a tree species of concern that occurs across a large elevational gradient in tropical Hawaii, United States.

Methods: Populations from three seed sources [low (L), mid (M), and …

Identification Of Biomarkers Of Sub-Lethal Algal Toxin Exposure In Atlantic Salmon (Salmo Salar) And Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus Tshawytscha) Using Differential Gene Expression Analysis, Brandon Ellingson

Biology Theses

Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar) and Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) are important culturally, recreationally, economically, and are a common aquaculture species in Canada and the United States. In the Pacific Northwest, blooms of toxic algae result in millions of dollars annually in losses for salmonid aquaculture producers. Blooms of harmful cyanobacteria produce microcystins which have been linked to net-pen liver disease which has large financial impacts on net pen salmon operations. Microcystin-LR, the most toxic variant, bioaccumulates in the liver and disrupts normal cellular activity by inhibiting protein phosphatases leading to deleterious effects on growth, immune status, and liver function. To …

Use Of The Mmpi-3 With Catholic And Episcopal Seminary And Religious Life Applicants, Thomas G. Plante, Elena Peng

Psychology

Psychological evaluations and testing using the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) among other instruments have been used to screen clerical and religious life applicants for decades. While much research has been conducted and published regarding these evaluations, the newer MMPI-3 has not been examined among this population. This study reviewed MMPI-3 results from 18 applicants to seminary and religious life from the Roman Catholic and Episcopal faith traditions to determine if the participants are generally psychological healthy and if they have any consistent elevations in their MMPI-3 testing scores. Additionally, we examined MMPI-3 differences among Catholics versus Episcopal applicants. Our …

Keep Calm And Labor On! Use Of Aromatherapy In Labor And Delivery, Erica Biancalana, Tricia Green

Nursing Research & Professional Development Conference

Background and/or rationale

Labor pain is unavoidable and can be the biggest determining factor of the labor experience. In labor, a patient’s anxiety stimulates the sympathetic nervous system and releases stress related hormones, which increases the severity of pain. Nonpharmacologic interventions can decrease anxiety and the perception of pain. Benefits to nonpharmacologic strategies include sense of control when patients actively manage their pain, lack of serious side effects, minimal expense, and ease of use. Lavender aromatherapy can decrease labor anxiety while also decreasing pain perception.

Aim or purpose of the initiative

This EBP project purpose: Does utilizing aromatherapy with birthing …
