Perception Regarding Respectful Maternity Care Among Postnatal Mothers, Rithughosh K P, Sreeja G. Pillai
Manipal Journal of Nursing and Health Sciences
Introduction: Every woman has the right to receive Respectful Maternity Care(RMC). Evidence of disrespect and abuse is reported globally. In India, almost every woman goes through some level of disrespect and abuse during childbirth, even though studies on RMC among postnatal mothers of Indian and Kerala origin are scarce. So, exploring this would be of great use in evidence-based fine-tuning of RMC services to promote quality maternal and newborn care. Objective: Assess the perceptions regarding RMC among postnatal mothers. Methodology: Quantitative approach with descriptive cross-sectional design was used to collect data from 250 postnatal mothers based on consecutive sampling …

Stress And Coping Strategies Adopted By Mothers Of Children Admitted In Pediatric Intensive Care Unit., Anisha P. R, Remya U R
Manipal Journal of Nursing and Health Sciences
Introduction: Planned or unplanned hospitalization increases the family’s stress and anxiety level. Hospitalization creates stress as they interrupt normal routines and place increased demands on parents who must further divide their time between the normal responsibilities and their hospitalized child. Many parents feel a lack of control and sense of powerlessness when their child is hospitalized. Objectives: The objectives of the study were to identify the stressors and coping strategies adopted by mothers of children admitted in pediatric intensive care unit and to determine the co-relation between stressors and coping strategies adopted by mothers of children admitted in PICU. Methods: …

Manipal Journal of Nursing and Health Sciences
Abstract
Postnatal is the period beginning immediately after the birth of a child and extending for about six weeks. Tradition, ritual pollution, and lack of experience mean mothers have relatively little autonomy over newborn care and grandmothers and elders are important decision makers and care takers.
Objectives
- To determine the level of knowledge regarding home based postnatal practices among primigravid women using structured interview schedule and to find the effectiveness of awareness programme on knowledge regarding home based postnatal practices among primigravid women in terms of gain in knowledge scores.
Method
A pre-experimental study was conducted among 30 primigravid women …

Objectives: Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a major public health concern in the USA, resulting in high rates of overdose and other negative outcomes. Methadone, an OUD treatment, has been shown to be effective in reducing the risk of overdose and improving overall health and quality of life. This study analysed the distribution of methadone for the treatment of OUD across the USA over the past decade and through the COVID-19 pandemic. Design: Retrospective observational study using secondary data analysis of the Drug Enforcement Administration and Medicaid Databases. Setting: USA. Participants: Patients who were dispensed methadone at US opioid treatment …

Provoking Gut-Level Reactions: A Study On Journalistic Framing During The 2020 Meatpacking Crisis, Michelle Rossi, Patrick Ferrucci
Journalism and Communication Faculty Publications
This study investigates news frames used by mainstream news media in the United States to portray the 2020 meatpacking crisis. By integrating framing and animal standpoint theory, it reveals the mechanisms that perpetuate social ignorance about daily practices within the meat industry, particularly those that exclude the perspectives of farmed animals. Through an engagement with intersectional ecofeminism and Critical Animal and Media Studies (CAMS), the investigation probes the cyclical patterns of violence inflicted upon farmed animals in the meat industry as portrayed by news outlets, a phenomenon that simultaneously impacts marginalized human communities. The inclusion of farmed animals as news …

Social Capital Associates With Better Cognitive Health, Oral Health And Epigenetic Age Deceleration: Findings From The Canadian Longitudinal Study On Aging., Aileen Liang, Noha Gomaa
Department of Medicine Publications
Background: Social exposures are linked to an array of health outcomes, especially around aging. In this study, we examined the association of social capital, defined as social relationships and networks, with clinical and biological outcomes including cognitive health, oral inflammation, and epigenetic aging. Methods: We used data from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA) (n =1,479; aged 45–85 years), categorizing social capital as structural and cognitive capital. Oral inflammation was determined as the presence of gum bleeding. Epigenetic aging was computed as the difference between chronological age and DNA methylation age. We constructed multivariable regression models adjusted for covariates …

Underlying Mechanisms Of Generalized Anxiety Disorder In An Experimental Fear-Conditioning Paradigm, Melissa Hartnell
Underlying Mechanisms Of Generalized Anxiety Disorder In An Experimental Fear-Conditioning Paradigm, Melissa Hartnell
Theses and Graduate Projects
The purpose of this study was to examine the potential underlying mechanisms of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) including fear generalization, maladaptive avoidance, and intolerance of uncertainty (IU) in a sample of adults with GAD, as compared to healthy controls in the context of a lab-based fear conditioning paradigm. The current study utilized data from the University of Minnesota ANGST Laboratory’s Danger Zone – Research Domain Criteria (DZ-RDoC) neuroimaging study. Participants consisted of 40 individuals ranging from ages 18-60, with 19 meeting criteria for GAD (M age = 30.57, SD = 11.70) and 21 healthy controls (M age = …

Objective Doxorubicin (DOX) is a highly effective chemotherapeutic used to treat many adult and pediatric cancers. However, its use is limited due to a dose-dependent cardiotoxicity, which can lead to lethal cardiomyopathy. In contrast to the extensive research efforts on toxic effects of DOX in cardiomyocytes, its effects and mechanisms on cardiac extracellular matrix (ECM) homeostasis and remodeling are poorly understood. In this study, we examined the potential effects of DOX on cardiac ECM to further our mechanistic understanding of DOX-induced cardiotoxicity.
Results DOX-induced significant down-regulation of several ECM related genes in primary cardiac fibroblasts, including Adamts1, Adamts5, Col4a1, Col4a2, …

Background
In industrialized populations, low male testosterone is associated with higher rates of cardiovascular mortality. However, coronary risk factors like obesity impact both testosterone and cardiovascular outcomes. Here, we assess the role of endogenous testosterone on coronary artery calcium in an active subsistence population with relatively low testosterone levels, low cardiovascular risk and low coronary artery calcium scores.
Methodology
In this cross-sectional community-based study, 719 Tsimane forager-horticulturalists in the Bolivian Amazon aged 40+ years underwent computed tomography (49.8% male, mean age 57.6 years).
Results
Coronary artery calcium levels were low; 84.5% had no coronary artery calcium. Zero-inflated negative binomial models …

A Scoping Review And Thematic Analysis Of The Use Of Technology In Everyday Occupations Amongst Adults Aged 55 Years Or Older In Supported Housing, Rachael Malthouse, Tanja Križaj, Alison Warren, Katherine Turner
School of Health Professions
Increasingly technology is used in everyday occupations and the value of technology in active ageing is a growing area of interest. People aged fifty-five years and older who reside in supported housing and support staff are key stakeholders to involve in further exploration of the use of technology. A scoping review mapped out key findings relating to how adults aged fifty-five years and older who reside in supported housing use technology in their everyday occupations. A data extraction tool and thematic analysis approach was applied to the data to identify challenges and opportunities to technology use for this population. Three …
