Faculty Research 2024
We identified a de novo heterozygous transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily M (melastatin) member 3 (TRPM3) missense variant, p.(Asn1126Asp), in a patient with developmental delay and manifestations of cerebral palsy (CP) using phenotype-driven prioritization analysis of whole-genome sequencing data with Exomiser. The variant is local- ized in the functionally important ion transport domain of the TRPM3 protein and predicted to impact the protein structure. Our report adds TRPM3 to the list of Mendelian disease– associated genes that can be associated with CP and provides further evidence for the path- ogenicity of the variant p.(Asn1126Asp).
Aging And Urinary Control: Alterations In The Brain-Bladder Axis., Cara C Hardy, Ron Korstanje
Aging And Urinary Control: Alterations In The Brain-Bladder Axis., Cara C Hardy, Ron Korstanje
Faculty Research 2023
Age-associated alterations in bladder control affect millions of older adults, with a heavy burden added to families both economically and in quality of life. Therapeutic options are limited with poor efficacy in older adults, lending to a growing need to address the gaps in our current understanding of urinary tract aging. This review summarizes the current knowledge of age-associated alterations in the structure and function of the brain-bladder axis and identifies important gaps in the field that have yet to be addressed. Urinary aging is associated with decreased tissue responsiveness, decreased control over the voiding reflex, signaling dysfunction along the …

Bridging The Gap: Analyzing The Relationship Between Environmental Justice Awareness On Twitter And Socio-Environmental Factors Using Remote Sensing And Big Data, Charles Knoble, Danlin Yu
Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Mounting awareness of the discriminatory distribution of environmental factors has increasingly placed environmental justice at the forefront of discussions on sustainable development, but responses to these disparities are often too little, too late. Remote sensing has emerged as a potential solution to this problem, capitalizing on the ability to capture high-resolution, spatially explicit data in near-real time. However, a conventional reliance on physical measurements and surface-level analyses risks overlooking the experiences and perceptions of affected communities. It is against this backdrop that the potential integration of remote sensing imagery and socially sensed big data such as social media data assumes …

Sembrando Semillas, Sowing Seeds: Reflections On Latinx Representations In Us Community Psychology's Ajcp, Jesica S. Fernandez, Ireri Bernal, Bianca L. Guzmán
Ethnic Studies
Latinx have contributed to the foundation and formation of the United States, and as this demographic increases, overlooking their unique experiences and lived conditions can limit community psychology's potential to better support them in their wellbeing. Thus, in alignment with the call for a virtual special issue highlighting critical themes in the American Journal of Community Psychology (AJCP), we take an exemplar approach to reviewing 15 articles published between 1979 and 2023. We highlight these articles for their unique contributions in laying the foundation or shifting the discourses of Latinx in the United States. We organize each article under one …
Fostering Self-Advocacy In Primary School-Aged Children With Cerebral Palsy, Meagan Ellner
Fostering Self-Advocacy In Primary School-Aged Children With Cerebral Palsy, Meagan Ellner
Occupational Therapy Doctoral Capstones
Developing self-advocacy skills in individuals with disabilities promotes lifelong independence and disability awareness. Introducing and implementing opportunities to engage in self-advocacy at an early age allows children to understand their diagnosis, strengths, and needs. Early self-advocacy equips children to determine and request accommodations that may benefit them. Children with cerebral palsy often face challenges in communication, ambulation, and social participation, making the need for self-advocacy prominent in encouraging their success in the school setting. In implementing a tool built during school-based occupational therapy services, children with cerebral palsy learned to recognize and voice their academic and social needs while informing …

Clinical Practice Skills For Incorporating Animal-Assisted Therapy In Occupational Therapy, Erin Wilhelm
Occupational Therapy Doctoral Capstones
The aim of my capstone project was to advance the field of animal-assisted therapy (AAT) and promote the incorporation of AAT within occupational therapy (OT) services. Existing research notably supports the implementation of AAT in OT practice in many settings and for a wide variety of diagnoses to promote occupational performance, build therapeutic rapport, and encourage motivation and engagement in therapy, but stronger evidence is needed to promote the incorporation of AAT (Andreason et al., 2017; Fine et al., 2019b). Despite the growth of AAT over the past two decades, there are few resources tailored specifically to the implementation of …

Novel Implementation Of Additive Manufacturing To Visualize The Human Brain Connectome, Greg Tyler
Computational and Data Sciences (MS) Theses
Additive manufacturing (AM) is an emerging technology with diverse areas of application. In this paper we explore a new application of AM that uses a subset of AM known as 3D printing, to create real life models of the human connectome. The human connectome is a color coded map of the connections in the human brain where directions are indicated by colors and the density of connections are indicated by color intensity.
There are several different algorithms for mapping the connections and describing the output. The Neu- roImaging Tools and Resource Collaboratory (NITRC) provides one such algorithm. It uses probabilistic …

Adaptation And Coping Mechanisms To Financial Constraints Among Socially Disadvantaged Farmers In South Carolina: A Qualitative Study, Akanksha Rathi
Adaptation And Coping Mechanisms To Financial Constraints Among Socially Disadvantaged Farmers In South Carolina: A Qualitative Study, Akanksha Rathi
All Theses
Abstract
Throughout American history, Socially Disadvantaged Farmers and Ranchers (SDFRs) have faced systemic discrimination, often leading to their intentional exclusion from federal programs. This has contributed to a decline in the number of farms operated by SDFRs. Even though certain policies led to a gradual increase in their numbers, the average acreage of SDFR-owned farms has diminished over time. Recognizing the impact of racial disadvantages on the diminished participation of SDFRs, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has instituted programs specifically tailored for minority farmers, offering financial aid and outreach initiatives. However, persistent and emerging barriers continue to impede …

Pathology Research and Scholarship
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer and is also the third leading cause of cancer-related death in the USA. Understanding the mechanisms of growth and progression of CRC is essential to improve treatment. Macronutrients such as glucose are energy source for a cell. Many tumor cells exhibit increased aerobic glycolysis. Increased tissue micronutrient iron levels in both mice and humans are also associated with increased colon tumorigenesis. However, if iron drives colon carcinogenesis via affecting glucose metabolism is still not clear. Here we found the intracellular glucose levels in tumor colonoids were significantly increased after iron treatment.

Green spaces represent the only natural areas in several cities around the world, providing good shelters for the local fauna. Based on this premise, many ecological studies have been conducted focused on these areas. Most of these works are about insects, particularly butterflies and beetles. Our study is centered on a different group: green lacewings (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae). These insects exhibit a similar feeding behavior to some other groups, such as beetles. We estimated diversity, richness, distribution, abundance and similarity employing two methods: sweep netting and suction trapping. Also, oviposition hosts were identified in 20 different green spaces. Approximately 740 specimens …

The Discovery Of Diverse Picophytoplankton Populations In The Columbia And Willamette Rivers Using Flow Cytometry, Kylee M. Lamberson
Chemistry Undergraduate Departmental Honors Theses
As important primary producers, picophytoplankton determine the flow of carbon and energy in aquatic ecosystems. Picocyanobacteria are one picophytoplankton group known to be dominant in oceans and lakes, but they are still poorly understood in river systems. This project examined picophytoplankton communities in two distinct river systems: the Columbia and Willamette Rivers in Portland, Oregon. I aimed to characterize and quantify the picophytoplankton populations in the context of the environmental conditions of the two rivers. I used flow cytometry to detect cells based on their relative size and pigment fluorescence. I sampled nearly weekly for ten months to capture population …

“The Debt Is Suffocating To Be Honest”: Student Loan Debt, Prospective Sensemaking, And The Social Psychology Of Precarity In An Allopathic Medical School, William Burr, Judson G. Everitt, James Johnson
Sociology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Confronted with soaring medical school costs and intensifying disparities in physician compensation by specialty, medical students are forced to make sense of medical education debt during the nascent stages of their careers in medicine. Few studies, however, have examined exactly how medical students make sense of these constraints or how this process might influence decisions about which specialty to pursue or affect doctors’ wellbeing. Leveraging qualitative data collected from current students across all four years of medical education at a Midwestern allopathic medical school, we document how medical students collectively engage in prospective sensemaking about their debt and how it …

Methods: This study used a qualitative research method due …
Preparing Students For Social Work Practice With Grieving Clients, Lisa Battle
Preparing Students For Social Work Practice With Grieving Clients, Lisa Battle
Social Work Theses - Archive
Social workers will encounter grief, death, and dying in their professional careers. Whether or not it is integral to the practice setting, it is integral to life, and clients in all settings will be impacted by grief and death. Rapidly increasing research in this area has uncovered grief and death as an important competency that new social workers are lacking (Pomeroy et al., 2019). This shortfall impacts social workers through increased risk of vicarious grief and trauma, and their clients through decreased level of care provided (Richmond et al., 2021). Extricating social workers and clients from this burden is a …
Former And Present Military Service Members' Perceptions Of The Use Of Psychedelic Substances For The Treatment Of Mental Health Conditions, Chloe Seay
Social Work Theses - Archive
Now more than ever, Americans are experiencing a serious mental health crisis. However, it can be asserted that veterans are even more in need of effective interventions to address mental health concerns. Veterans experience disproportionally high rates of anxiety, depression, substance abuse disorders, PTSD, and death by suicide. They often do not find significant symptom reduction from traditional mental health intervention methods. Psychedelics are re-emerging as an option for mental health treatment, however our knowledge of veterans’ attitudes toward the use of psychedelics for treatment for various mental health conditions is currently limited. This work presents the results of an …

The emergence and proliferation of Gram-negative bacterial infections has become a serious public health concern due to their rapid rise of resistant to all the clinically available antibiotics. The increasing incidence of bacterial infections has prioritized the invention of new therapeutics to prevent the antibiotic treatment failure. Typically, Gram-negative bacteria use several defensive strategies such as modification of the cell envelope to escape the lethal effects of bactericidal antibiotics. Carbapenem beta-lactam considered last resort antibiotic to treat Gram-negative bacteria infections, while they are considered first line prescription against nosocomial pathogen Acinetobacter baumannii (denoted as Ab). Beside resistance, the susceptible populations …
