Testimony Advocating For Those Affected By Mental Illness In The Landscape Of American Gun Violence, Nels Faul
Testimony Advocating For Those Affected By Mental Illness In The Landscape Of American Gun Violence, Nels Faul
Why Is It Important To Know About Gun Control?
This is a mock testimony that was crafted to advocate for those affected by mental illness and dispel misconceptions about tackling the American gun violence issue through the avenues of mental health infrastructure. This mock testimony advocates for a fictitious government body to take action in response to the mass shooting tragedy that occurred in Lewiston on October 25th, 2023. Moreover, my testimony looks to warn about stigmatizations of those affected by mental illness to be exacerbated by painting them as a violent threat when discussing issues of gun violence. Lastly, I share an anecdote while reflecting on how gun …

The Role Of Safety Interventions In Decreasing Unplanned Extubations In Pediatrics: A Benchmark Study, Wesley Bray
The Role Of Safety Interventions In Decreasing Unplanned Extubations In Pediatrics: A Benchmark Study, Wesley Bray
MSN Capstone Projects
Unplanned extubation (UE) is the removal of an endotracheal tube from a patient any time before their planned extubation. In layman’s terms it is when a patient loses their airway before they were ready. These events lead to longer hospital stays, cost hospitals thousands of dollars for each case and can cause severe complications for the patient including death. Pediatric patients are a population that are at risk of UEs more so than the general population due to their inability to understand what is going on in the hospital due to their age and development, as well as their ability …

Charter School Funding: Did Initial Pandemic Relief Advance Equity In The City?, Alison H. Johnson, Josh B. Mcgee, Patrick Wolf, Jay F. May, Larry D. Maloney
School Choice Demonstration Project
In early 2020, the global COVID-19 pandemic closed schools for the rest of the 2019-20 school year (fiscal year 2020 or FY20). The United States Congress deployed funds to help K-12 schools adjust and plan for reopening via the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, including the initial $13.2 billion installment through the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund (ESSER I) and initial $2.95 billion installment through the Governor’s Emergency Education Relief (GEER I) Fund. Private sector and non-profit organizations, including charter schools, were also eligible for loans through the Small Business Administration’s Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), …

The article examines the gender discourse channelled through Suara Aisyiyah magazine, which is part of Aisiyah, a women’s organization, with a focus on the gender perspective discourse presented via online media. However, representations of gender discourse vary across different spaces, times, agents, and contexts, as well as in the ways ideas about gender are channelled in alignment with the organization’s vision. To capture the evolution of gender discourse with online media, this study adopted a historical approach combined with discourse analysis. The discourse analysis method, which describes both text and context, was employed in data analysis. The research period begins …

The Impact Of Covid-19 On Hispanic Restaurants In South-Central Texas: A Qualitative Study, Javier Apolinar
Theses & Dissertations
Research Focus. The COVID-19 pandemic generated a major crisis for the restaurant industry in 2020 and 2021. The nationwide shutdown resulted in widespread restrictions on social gatherings, significantly impacting this industry. Hispanic businesses were not immune to this crisis, and its impact had profound effects on small businesses.
Most of the research in this field has primarily concentrated on small businesses and entrepreneurship under favorable circumstances, highlighting factors such as entrepreneurial drive, maximizing profits, taking risks, developing ideas, and promoting fair competition. Consequently, the current body of research is insufficient and fails to address the specific experiences of minority small …

Examining High School Girls’ Experiences In A Global Leadership Program: A Constructivist Grounded Theory Study, Erika Haskins
Theses & Dissertations
The proportion of women in influential leadership positions continues to grow at a slow pace (Beaupre, 2022; Hoyt & Johnson, 2012). Inequalities are still present in the representation of leadership and salary wages (Catalyst, Inc., 2022; Choi, 2018). While progress is evident in regard to diversity and inclusion policies and practices in the workplace, barriers continue to exist that hinder opportunities for women who strive to achieve higher-level positions (Elias, 2018). With more women in leadership positions, advocacy for women and girls can occur, such as access to leadership development programs in schools and organizations (Beaupre, 2022; Shier et al., …

Automation Complacency On Humans And Cyber-Physical Systems In The Energy Sector, Shannon Olaveson
Cyber Operations and Resilience Program Graduate Projects
Cyber-physical systems (CPS) and the Industrial Internet of Things (IoT) enable industrial systems and technology to work together to achieve increased connectivity and operational efficiency through the use of automation. Because automation requires less human interaction to run industrial tasks, a reliance may form on this integration to take over an otherwise manual process. This reliance can cause human behavior to affect operational safety and security, leading to unintentional outcomes or vulnerable areas of adversarial opportunity. The energy sector is one of the most critical infrastructure areas becoming a part of the rise to automation, resourcing gas, oil, and electricity …

Using Behavior Skills Training And A Group Contingency To Promote Mask-Wearing In An Early Childhood Special Education Classroom, Kaitlyn Smith, Hannah Macnaul, Marie Kirkpatrick
The Journal of Special Education Apprenticeship
Coronavirus (COVID-19) and the resulting pandemic had widespread implications on the safety of the job tasks teachers are charged with each day. The Center for Disease Control (CDC, 2020) recommends people age 2 years and older should wear masks in public settings; however, for children with disabilities, wearing a mask may be difficult and as such, is not required. Special education teachers and students in particular are at high risk for exposure and contracting COVID-19. Therefore, behavior-analytic strategies that can teach and reinforce appropriate mask-wearing should be evaluated. Given the environment of schools at the time of the study, mask-wearing …

Teachers' Perceptions Of The Effectiveness Of Culturally Responsive Practices, Kimberly M. Burks
Dissertations (2016-Present)
Over the years, research regarding racial disproportionalities in the assignment of disciplinary consequences has been evaluated. Evaluation of the ever-increasing Black-White achievement gap has been at the forefront of educational research for decades. Gaining a better understanding of why this gap persists not only benefits schools but students as well. By enforcing certain policies, Black students are frequently removed from the educational environment due to subjective disciplinary infractions and perceived negative behaviors. Negative stereotypes often perpetuate teacher perceptions and expectations; as a result, minority students, especially Black students, are at the receiving end of those lowered expectations. Teachers must understand …

Using Remote Sensing To Determine Riparian Resilience In Beaver Dammed Versus Un-Dammed Corridors Following Whiplash Weather, Sophie Charlotte Valérie Aubry
Master of Science in Environmental Sciences and Management Projects
Beaver complexes slow and store water allowing for riparian growth which in turn fosters biodiversity, retains carbon, and enhances resistance to fires and drought. Given the benefits associated with beaver complexes and the potential they have for climate mitigation, California hopes to reintroduce beavers and restore their habitat throughout the state. However, the impact of high peak flow events on beaver complexes and their adjacent riparian corridors is less understood and requires more documentation at various spatial scales. To better understand the potential beavers may have as climate change mitigators it is important to understand beaver complex resiliency following a …

Background: Large-river decision-makers are charged with maintaining diverse ecosystem services through unprecedented social-ecological transformations as climate change and other global stressors intensify. The interconnected, dendritic habitats of rivers, which often demarcate jurisdictional boundaries, generate complex management challenges. Here, we explore how the Resist–Accept–Direct (RAD) framework may enhance large-river management by promoting coordinated and deliberate responses to social-ecological trajectories of change. The RAD framework identifies the full decision space of potential management approaches, wherein managers may resist change to maintain historical conditions, accept change toward different conditions, or direct change to a specified future with novel conditions. In the Upper Mississippi …

Effects Of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi Inoculation And Cover Crop On Soil Carbon Dynamics And Microbial Communities In A Mediterranean Lemon Orchard., Anna Rodriguez-Paiatsyka
Master of Science in Environmental Sciences and Management Projects
Plant-associated fungi such as arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) have the potential to sequester carbon (C), improve soil aggregation, and promote plant health. Due to multiple benefits of AMF to plant and soil health, AMF has gained much attention leading to a rapidly expanding market in mycorrhizal bio-stimulants intended to improve crop yield, root development, and soil health in horticultural crops, including citrus. However, there is limited information on how to inoculate a mature citrus orchard, and how inoculation of a mature orchard with AMF affects C sequestration. In this study, we planted a cover crop inoculated with AMF in a …

Soil Burn Severity And Environmental Covariate Effects On Soil Health Two Years Postfire In The Sierra Nevada, Julie A. Lewis
Master of Science in Environmental Sciences and Management Projects
Wildfires have been steadily increasing in both size and severity in recent decades. This global trend is most evident in California, especially the North Coast and Sierra Nevada. Although these trends are rising, there is little known about the effects of these wildfires on forest soils. Soil is the 2nd largest C sink on the planet, and the largest terrestrial bank. Without understanding the implication of rising wildfire severities on these soils, we cannot understand how to help protect this resource in the future. Due to the rapid increase in wildfire size and intensity, there is little known about the …
