A Comparative Analysis Of The Water Use And Nutritional Value For California Commodities, Helen M. Lee, Giselle A. Pignotti, Kasuen Mauldin, John Gieng
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
To create a more sustainable food system, this study analyzed the water use and nutritional data for California commodities. The data were separated into quadrants based on median scores, with results that include a list of commodities lower in agricultural water use while being higher in nutritional value. Because the agricultural sector is the dominant water user, there is an opportunity here to influence growers, consumers and policymakers to choose and support the growth of foods that would reduce water consumption while still providing beneficial nutrients. The goal of this paper is to educate the public on this important issue.

SARS-CoV-2 infection-induced aggravation of host innate immune response not only causes tissue damage and multiorgan failure in COVID-19 patients but also induces host genome damage and activates DNA damage response pathways. To test whether the compromised DNA repair capacity of individuals modulates the severity of COVID-19 infection, we analyze DNA repair gene expression in publicly available patient datasets and observe a lower level of the DNA glycosylase NEIL2 in the lungs of severely infected COVID-19 patients. This observation of lower NEIL2 levels is further validated in infected patients, hamsters and ACE2 receptor-expressing human A549 (A549-ACE2) cells. Furthermore, delivery of recombinant …

Introduction Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a debilitating neurological disorder for which the identification of disease-modifying interventions represents a major unmet need. Diverse trial designs have attempted to mitigate challenges of population heterogeneity, efficacious symptomatic therapy and lack of outcome measures that are objective and sensitive to change in a disease modification setting. It is not clear whether consensus is emerging regarding trial design choices. Here, we report the protocol of a scoping review that will provide a contemporary update on trial design variability for disease-modifying interventions in PD. Methods and analysis The Population, Intervention, Comparator, Outcome and Study design (PICOS) …

The heart of the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, is a particularly suitable model for cardiac studies. Optical coherence microscopy (OCM) captures in vivo cross-sectional videos of the beating Drosophila heart for cardiac function quantification. To analyze those large-size multi-frame OCM recordings, human labelling has been employed, leading to low efficiency and poor reproducibility. Here, we introduce a robust and accurate automated Drosophila heart segmentation algorithm, called FlyNet 2.0+, which utilizes a long short-term memory (LSTM) convolutional neural network to leverage time series information in the videos, ensuring consistent, high-quality segmentation. We present a dataset of 213 Drosophila heart videos, equivalent …

Doctor Of Physical Therapy Students’ Experience With Microaggressions In The Clinic: A Call To Action, Jocelin T. Friedman, Todd E. Davenport
Pacific Journal of Health
As Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students fulfill off-campus clinical experience requirements at healthcare institutions, they are mentored by clinical instructors who are employees of said healthcare institutions. Clinical instructors, patients, or other staff members there may commit microaggressions against physical therapy students with varying subject matters, intentions, and effects on the students. Microaggressions are brief verbal humiliations which may or may not be intentional, but nonetheless convey derogatory slights or insults towards a target group. This article explores DPT students’ real-life experiences with microaggressions within the clinical education realm and the challenges a Director of Clinical Education faced in …

An Efficient Non-Parametric Item Selection Method For Polytomous Scoring Cd-Cat, Junjie Li, Huijing Zheng, Chunhua Kang, Pingfei Zeng
Chinese/English Journal of Educational Measurement and Evaluation | 教育测量与评估双语期刊
In educational evaluations at home and abroad, polytomous scoring items are becoming increasingly important. They can provide richer and more valuable information, with unmatched advantages compared to binary (0-1 scoring) items. If used as a tool for teachers to diagnose and assess students in the classroom, CD-CAT (Cognitive Diagnostic Computerized Adaptive Testing) has significant implications for improving teaching effectiveness. However, in classroom teaching situations, it is not feasible to estimate item parameters accurately with a large sample, as in large-scale assessments. In such cases, non-parametric CD-CAT becomes the only viable option. Compared to parametric CD-CAT, non-parametric CD-CAT started later and …

Criminal Justice Interventions For Individuals With Mental Health Disabilities: A Systematic Literature Review, Fidelis Azeke, Nassrine Noureddine
Criminal Justice Interventions For Individuals With Mental Health Disabilities: A Systematic Literature Review, Fidelis Azeke, Nassrine Noureddine
Pacific Journal of Health
In the criminal law, with few exceptions, for a finding of guilt, the physical act and the state of mind to commit the offense must be present at the time of the commission of the offense. People with mental disabilities often lack the state of mind required to commit the offense for which they are eventually charged for and or convicted. This paper examines the effectiveness of some past and present criminal justice system interventions that addresses the mental health disabilities of criminal offenders pre-adjudicative proceedings. A systematic review of the literature was used to examine past and present criminal …

Muhammadiyah is considered a radical conservative movement among the Malaysian Muslim community. The education system in Malaysia is generally exclusive. The majority of Malaysian society is resistant to the Muhammadiyah sect except in certain states. This research used the theory from Servaes and Malikhao, the modernization paradigm that influenced academia from 1945 to 1965 was supported by the transition of sociopolitical technology and culture from advanced societies to traditional societies. Development is explained as economic growth. The main idea in the modernization perspective shows that development is interpreted as first, planned, and overlapping. The results showed ideologically, the principle of …

Faculty Research 2023
BACKGROUND: Navigating the clinical literature to determine the optimal clinical management for rare diseases presents significant challenges. We introduce the Medical Action Ontology (MAxO), an ontology specifically designed to organize medical procedures, therapies, and interventions.
METHODS: MAxO incorporates logical structures that link MAxO terms to numerous other ontologies within the OBO Foundry. Term development involves a blend of manual and semi-automated processes. Additionally, we have generated annotations detailing diagnostic modalities for specific phenotypic abnormalities defined by the Human Phenotype Ontology (HPO). We introduce a web application, POET, that facilitates MAxO annotations for specific medical actions for diseases using the Mondo …

Amicus Curiae Brief Of The Navajo Nation, Paul Spruhan
Amicus Curiae Brief Of The Navajo Nation, Paul Spruhan
Faculty Scholarship
The Navajo Nation Labor Commission ("NNLC" or "Commission") invited the Navajo Nation Department of Justice ("DOJ") to file an amicus brief in this matter. As discussed more fully below, the DOJ recommends that the NNLC hold an evidentiary hearing to gather facts necessary to conduct a full jurisdictional analysis under Montana and determine whether the Northern Apache County Special Healthcare District ("NACSHCD") has sovereign immunity. The fact gathering process is necessary given the fact-intensive analysis under both Montana and Arizona's sovereign immunity laws. As the Navajo Supreme Court has instructed, the proper threshold inquiry is whether jurisdiction exists over the …

Importance The fat mass and obesity–associated gene (FTO) is associated with obesity phenotypes, but the association is inconsistent across populations. Within-population differences may explain some of the variability observed.
Objective To investigate sex differences in the association between FTO single-nucleotide variants (SNVs) and obesity traits among self-identified non-Hispanic Black and non-Hispanic White US adults, to examine whether the SNVs were associated with cardiometabolic diseases, and to evaluate whether obesity mediated the association between FTO SNVs and cardiometabolic diseases.
Design, Setting, and Participants This cross-sectional study used data from the Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) …

Our Changing Reality: The Metaverse And The Importance Of Privacy Regulations In The United States, Anushkay Raza
Global Business Law Review
This Note discusses the legal and pressing digital challenges that arise in connection with the growing use of virtual reality, and more specifically, the metaverse. As this digital realm becomes more integrated into our daily lives, the United States should look towards creating a federal privacy law that protects fundamental individual privacy rights. This Note argues that congress should emulate the European Union's privacy regulations, and further, balances the potential consequences and benefits of adapting European regulations within the United Sates. Finally, this Note provides drafting considerations of future lawyers who will not only be dealing with the rise of …

An Assessment Of Sentencing Disparities By Race In The State Of Arkansas, Viola Schaeffer
An Assessment Of Sentencing Disparities By Race In The State Of Arkansas, Viola Schaeffer
Theses and Dissertations
Past research has found that there are often disparities in sentencing outcomes due to extralegal factors such as race, gender, age, socioeconomic status, education level, and geographic location. The most prominent and widely studied of these factors, however, is race. Specifically, studies have shown that minority offenders (e.g., African Americans) were more likely to receive a lengthier sentence than their White peers. The purpose of this thesis is thus to examine if there is racial bias in sentences levied to violent offenders in Arkansas. This is be done by analyzing sentencing data from the Arkansas Office of the Courts between …

Esg, Public Pensions, And Compelled Speech, Mark R. Kubisch
Texas A&M Law Review
Investing based on Environmental, Social, and Governance (“ESG”) principles has dramatically increased in recent years. Many institutional investors— including public pension funds funded by mandatory contributions from government employees—now incorporate ESG principles into their investment and engagement strategies even though certain aspects of ESG, such as investing to reduce carbon emissions, are politically controversial. Over this same period, courts have reaffirmed that the First Amendment protects individuals from being compelled to associate with or to subsidize the speech of third parties. Indeed, applying this compelled speech doctrine, the Supreme Court recently overruled a forty-year-old precedent that allowed states to force …

Chronic Kidney Disease Android Application, Paul Le
Computer Science and Engineering Senior Theses
Chronic kidney disease is increasingly recognized as a leading public health problem over the world that affects more than 10 percent of the population worldwide, where electrolytes and wastes can build up in your system. Kidney failure might not be noticeable until more advanced stages where it may then become fatal if not for artificial filtering or a transplant. As a result, it is important to detect kidney disease early on to prevent it from progressing to kidney failure. The current main test of the disease is a blood test that measures the levels of a waste product called creatine …

Sex hormones exert a wide influence on several systems of the human body, especially in women, who undergo intense changes in the trans and postmenopausal periods. Different experimental models are used to mimic these conditions; however, the impact on hormonal profile may be different. This study aimed to analyze and compare vaginal cytology of different post-estropausal mice models, along with their microscopical ovarian features. Forty-six C57BL/6J female mice with the ages of 4, 6 and 18 months at the beginning of the experiment, weighing about 25–28 grams, constituted five groups: NC–(negative control) animals with no treatment, OVX-SHAM—sham ovariectomized, OVX–ovariectomized, VCD–medicated …
