Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc)

Background: The purpose of this article is to produce a review of the literature on a recently growing topic of interest. We believe the widespread use of acetaminophen in pregnancy makes the rising concern for acetaminophen use in pregnancy and the development of childhood attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) a national public health matter. The mechanism of action of acetaminophen, the pathophysiology of drug transfer through the placental barrier, and the most up-to-date research studies were analyzed with the goal of bringing clarity and promoting healthy pregnancies for all.

Methods: PubMed, PLOS One, and Google Scholar served as the cornerstone …

Beyond The Physical Wounds: A Proactive Approach To Mental Health Recovery After A Traumatic Injury, Christine Mcgahey Dec 2023

Beyond The Physical Wounds: A Proactive Approach To Mental Health Recovery After A Traumatic Injury, Christine Mcgahey

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Beyond the Physical Wounds: A Proactive Approach to Mental Health Recovery After a Traumatic Injury

Background: Every year, millions of Americans incur a life-threatening traumatic event and are admitted to trauma centers to treat their acute physical injuries. While traumatic injury is closely associated with developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), patients are rarely evaluated for PTSD risk or educated about long-term psychological sequelae.

Local Problem: The predictive value of early screening to quantify PTSD risk in trauma patients is well documented in the literature. However, in a 241-bed Level II Trauma acute care hospital, there was no protocol to evaluate …

An educational intervention was done with nursing staff to assess their knowledge of the Clinical Institute Withdrawal Assessment for Alcohol (CIWA) scale and to stress the importance of frequent and accurate use of the scale. Data was collected for three months before the educational intervention and three months after the educational intervention on the total number of patients admitted to the facility with a diagnosis of …

Feasibility Of Using Podcasts For Knowledge Dissemination To Reduce Health Disparities For Women Targeting Preventative Initiatives And Lifestyle Medicine Interventions, Kristin Stovern Dec 2023

Feasibility Of Using Podcasts For Knowledge Dissemination To Reduce Health Disparities For Women Targeting Preventative Initiatives And Lifestyle Medicine Interventions, Kristin Stovern

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Project

The purpose of this feasibility project was to look at podcasts to shed light on the issues that affect the well-being of women with gender-based disparities in healthcare. Women face persistent obstacles when it comes to the quality of healthcare they receive. One of the barriers that has been ever-present is with failure of the medical system to rigorously study the effects of diseases and drugs on women or to fund studies on women’s health conditions. Implicit biases and lack of access to care inhibit the quality of healthcare. Collectively, these issues result in unnecessary sickness, disability, and decreased quality …

The Hidden History Of The Norseman And Celts, Amber Nicole Johnson Dec 2023

The Hidden History Of The Norseman And Celts, Amber Nicole Johnson

Whittier Scholars Program

When people hear the word Celts or Vikings there seems to be a common stigma or romanticization of them. This seems to stem from the early iron age and has shifted over to the 21st century with the production of movies and franchises. They are often depicted as being savage, barbaric, or warrior based (a term used to describe them) when there is a whole other side to these people. In the Spring of 2023, I took an independent study course that allowed me to examine the available archaeological and other evidence to understand the identities of the Germanic and …

Documenting Range Expansion Of Two Invasive Tick (Acari:Ixodidae) Species In Eastern South Dakota, Braden Wojahn Dec 2023

Documenting Range Expansion Of Two Invasive Tick (Acari:Ixodidae) Species In Eastern South Dakota, Braden Wojahn

Dissertations and Theses

This project documents the expanded zoogeographic ranges of the blacklegged tick (Ixodes scapularis) and lone star tick (Amblyomma americanum) within eastern South Dakota. Ticks are important when considering a “One Health” approach, as many species are competent vectors of zoonotic pathogens causing human diseases and conditions such as Lyme disease, tularemia, rickettsia, and alpha-gal syndrome. The research involved constitutes two steps. First, tick surveillance was conducted in eastern counties of South Dakota, spanning March 2021 through August 2022. Surveillance took place along edge habitat at recreation areas, state and public parks, wildlife management areas and refuges, and other natural areas …

Don’T Put All Your Eggs In One Basket: Increasing Survivorship In A Headstarting Program For The Endangered Hine’S Emerald Dragonfly (Somatochlora Hineana), Lauren Michelle Morris Dec 2023

Don’T Put All Your Eggs In One Basket: Increasing Survivorship In A Headstarting Program For The Endangered Hine’S Emerald Dragonfly (Somatochlora Hineana), Lauren Michelle Morris

Dissertations and Theses

In the age of the Anthropocene, wildlife is impacted by the presence of humans in both positive and negative ways. Many humans desire to conserve wildlife and the associated resources that come with it, while simultaneously the ever-expanding human population demands the land, food, and water resources, as well as other materials sourced from wildlife. Insects, a diverse and necessary group of animals are no exception to the impacts currently being experienced by wildlife. Because of this, some species are threatened or endangered, and human intervention is necessary. The federally endangered Hine’s Emerald dragonfly (Somatochlora hineana) is receiving intervention to …

Perceived Neuroscience Knowledge And Counselor Self-Efficacy, Cristina Buus Dec 2023

Perceived Neuroscience Knowledge And Counselor Self-Efficacy, Cristina Buus

Dissertations and Theses

There has been an increase in neuroscience research within the counseling field which has then been integrated into counseling practice. There is limited research, however, that investigates how this neuroscience information impacts counselors directly. This study investigated the association between counselor self-efficacy and perceived neuroscience knowledge. This study also sought to understand what factors were predictive of perceived neuroscience knowledge (gender, age, licensure tier, years of experience, CACREP-status, and perceived benefit of neuroscience knowledge). To answer the research questions, a multiple regression design was utilized to identify any factors that were predictive of perceived neuroscience knowledge. Additionally, a correlation was …

Hytplankton And Chlorophyll Dynamics Across Various Aquatic System Types In The Middle Missouri Rivber Basin, Ryan Alan Dunbeck Dec 2023

Hytplankton And Chlorophyll Dynamics Across Various Aquatic System Types In The Middle Missouri Rivber Basin, Ryan Alan Dunbeck

Dissertations and Theses

Much like the response to naturally occurring physical, chemical, and biological variables controlling phytoplankton dynamics, anthropogenic modification to those variables may have profound implications on phytoplankton density and community structure in aquatic systems. We theorized that extensive land use and river channel modifications would result in (1) an increase in basin-wide phytoplankton density in the Middle Missouri River Basin (MMRB), and (2) a shift in community structure within and downstream of reservoirs filled after 1950 by examining data collected from 2020 and 2021 across the Middle Missouri River Basin to data collected in 1950. Our results suggest that system-wide increases …

The Impact Of Sitting And Crawling On The Acquisition Of Object Permanence In Infants With Motor Delays And Infants With Typical Development, Karl Jancart Dec 2023

The Impact Of Sitting And Crawling On The Acquisition Of Object Permanence In Infants With Motor Delays And Infants With Typical Development, Karl Jancart

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Object permanence (OP) is the ability to understand that objects continue to exist even when they cannot be perceived. During play, infants with an understanding of OP will continue searching for toys when the toys have been obscured by other items. Searching requires movement. The theory of embodied cognition maintains that the form and function of an organism’s body influence how the organism learns; Therefore, if a child has difficulties with movement, as demonstrated by children with motor delays, they will likely have difficulty engaging in play, the modality by which children learn about their world. The current research is …

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is characterized by leukocytosis with left-shifted neutrophilia, basophilia, eosinophilia, and variable thrombocytosis. However, extremely rare cases of patients with CML without significant leukocytosis and thrombocytosis (aleukemic phase [ALP] CML, or CML-ALP) have been reported. Due to its rarity and limited awareness, there remains a significant knowledge gap concerning the pathologic diagnosis, disease progression, and optimal patient management and outcomes. In this multi-institutional study, we investigated 31 patients with CML-ALP. Over half (54.8%) of patients had a history of or concurrent hematopoietic or nonhematopoietic malignancies. At time of diagnosis of CML-ALP, approximately 26.7% of patients exhibited neutrophilia, …

The Effect Of Factors And Constraints On Sporting Attendance, Joshua D. Whitlow Dec 2023

The Effect Of Factors And Constraints On Sporting Attendance, Joshua D. Whitlow

Honors Theses

21,625 fans packed the confines of Brooks stadium on September 3, 2022, for a clash between the Army Black Knights football team and the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers football team. This was a new record at Brooks stadium, and was followed with just 12,261 the next week vs. Gardner Webb. Meanwhile, a 2022 Coastal Carolina Women’s Soccer game draws in less than 200 spectators. On the surface level, the disparity of these numbers appears confusing and unconnected to one another, however there are a multitude of factors that go into the number of people who show up to a particular sporting …

Department of Jefferson Headache Center Papers and Presentations

Headache is a leading cause of disability and suffering. One major challenge in developing device treatments is demonstrating their efficacy given devices' often-high placebo rate. This paper reviews the importance of validating sham devices as part of finalizing the design for larger-scale prospective randomized controlled trials in patients with chronic headache as well as the results of a prospective, single-blind trial to validate two potential sham noninvasive thermal nerve block devices. Study participants were trained to self-administer thermal nerve block treatment using sham devices in an office visit. Two different sham systems with different temperature profiles were assessed. Devices were …

Terriers Unleashed, Allison C. Douglass Dec 2023

Terriers Unleashed, Allison C. Douglass

Student Scholarship

This zine was created in Fall 2023 by the students in English 346: American Political Rhetoric with Dr. Douglass, and it captures their engagement with important issues at Wofford. Often, when we think of “politics,” we are thinking about party politics surrounding systems of state governance. However, this class was interested in politics as a broader category of activities that influence decision-making within communities. Our class asked: What does the Wofford we want to attend look like, and what changes could we advocate for in order to move toward that Wofford? Each student crafted a message intended to influence our …

Environmental Ozone Exposure, Gestational Health, And The Lung-Placental Axis, Russell Hunter Dec 2023

Environmental Ozone Exposure, Gestational Health, And The Lung-Placental Axis, Russell Hunter

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Adverse gestational outcomes of pregnancy are a globally occurring threat to fetomaternal health, with limited clinical prognostic and intervention strategies aside from premature labor induction. Epidemiological data shows strong correlations between gestational exposure to air pollution and the incidence of adverse gestational outcomes. The research presented here was designed to evaluate potential murine models of gestational exposure, as well as quantify maternal cardiovascular damage therein. These studies employ radiotelemetry, echocardiography, single cell RNA-sequencing, and untargeted lipidomic analyses in efforts to study these effects. Results implicate cardiovascular responses to mid-gestational ozone exposure as evidenced by decreased maternal cardiac output and increased …
