Social Support And Minority Student-Athletes, Jason Thompson
Social Support And Minority Student-Athletes, Jason Thompson
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
Interpersonal relationships in the family are important to individuals, especially college students. A subgroup within the larger population of college students that calls for further examination is ethnic minority college student-athletes. The present study involved examining ethnic minority college student-athletes’ perceptions of social support they receive from their family as they attend a Predominantly White Institution (PWI). Findings indicated that student- athletes perceived various types of social support that they found beneficial to them both as student-athletes in general and as minority student-athletes in particular. Types of social support included emotional support, informational support, tangible assistance support, task appreciation support, …

The Effects Of Sport Participation On Student-Athletes’ And Non-Athlete Students’ Social Life And Identity, Steve Chen, Shonna Snyder, Monica Magner
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
This study examined perceived athletic identity, sport commitment, and the effect of sport participation to identify the impact of athletic participation on college students. This study surveyed 163 student-athletes (59%) and 112 non-athlete students (41%) from a National Collegiate Athletic Association Division-I affiliated institution (males = 172, 62.5%; females = 103, 37.5%). The survey questionnaire was developed and modified from four well-established instruments, the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale, the Sport Commitment Model, the Life Roles Inventory-Values Scales, and Athletic Involvement on the Social Life. The data collection process was initiated and completed in the 2008 spring semester. Seven sub-factors: Personal …

Examining The Dearth Of Black Head Coaches At The Ncaa Football Bowl Subdivision Level: A Critical Race Theory And Social Dominance Theory Analysis, Kwame Agyemang, Joshua Delorme
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
Forecasting future obstacles, W.E.B. Du Bois once envisaged color to be the dilemma facing the United States of America (USA) in the 20th Century. Wherein some individuals may disagree with this claim and counter by alleging America has moved towards a post racial society, unremitted racial structuring subsisted in the 20th century and has continued to cast a dark shadow in 21st century American society. The realm of sport is no exception as Black student-athletes comprise approximately half of the football participants at the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) level. Oddly enough, Black head coaches are severely underrepresented at this level. …
Clashing Models Of Commercial Sport In Higher Education: Implications For Reform And Scholarly Research, Allen Sack
Clashing Models Of Commercial Sport In Higher Education: Implications For Reform And Scholarly Research, Allen Sack
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
Big-time college sport has successfully weathered one wave of reform after another for over 100 years. Yet, passionate debates continue regarding the educational impact of highly commercialized sport in American universities. The major purpose of this study is to identify the issues and assumptions that divide reformers and reform groups. It also makes explicit the conceptual models—intellectual elitist, academic capitalist, and athletes rights—they use to interpret the reality of commercialized college sport. This study does not test the validity of each model. Rather it explores logical connections between these models and reform policies likely to be pursued by those who …
Academic Majors Of Upperclassmen Football Players In The Atlantic Coast Conference: An Analysis Of Academic Clustering Comparing White And Minority Players, Jeffrey J. Fountain, Peter S. Finley
Academic Majors Of Upperclassmen Football Players In The Atlantic Coast Conference: An Analysis Of Academic Clustering Comparing White And Minority Players, Jeffrey J. Fountain, Peter S. Finley
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
Studies on graduation rates of college athletes have typically utilized subdivisions based on race, gender, and sport to allow for more transparent scrutiny of potential problem areas. However, subdivision by race has not been utilized when examining clustering of football players into academic majors. Clustering occurs when 25% or more of an athletic team shares a single academic major (Case, Greer, & Brown, 1987). Football media guides from Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) schools were utilized to determine the academic majors of upperclassmen to explore whether race could be a factor in academic clustering. The results showed that Minority players were …

Taking Science To The Streets: Participatory Research Approaches To Improve Environment, Health, And Quality Of Life In Urban Areas, Na'taki Osborne Jelks
Sustainability Seminar Series
Environmental justice communities, those disproportionately affected by pollutants, are simultaneously exposed to multiple environmental stressors and also experience social and cultural factors that may heighten their health risks in comparison to other communities. Availability of fine-grained, community-level data is limited to support said communities’ appeals for public health practice, planning, and policy changes. In Northwest Atlanta, Georgia’s Proctor Creek Watershed community residents (watershed researchers), academics, and non-profit organizations have leveraged local, community knowledge; community science methods; and participatory approaches to identify, document, and analyze the impacts of local environmental hazards and quality of life stressors. This highly collaborative and interdisciplinary …

Refereed Research - Learning From Subsistence Marketplaces And Beyond: A Cross-Sectoral Comparison In Benin, Paul Ingenbleek, Souleimane A. Adekambi, Hans C.M. Van Trijp
Subsistence Marketplaces
Subsistence Marketplaces publishes studies that study consumers, entrepreneurs, and marketplaces from a broad range of low income contexts in their own right, transcending the boundaries between sectors and disciplines to derive practically meaningful implications. This paper contributes to accomplishing the mission of the new journal by contextualizing market learning theory to subsistence marketplaces. More specifically, the study links two modes of market learning (exploration and exploitation) with producers’ livelihood performance. It hypothesizes that within subsistence marketplaces, producers benefit the most from exploration but to seize a market opportunity beyond the subsistence context, BoP producers should strengthen their exploitative learning processes. …

Fintech Lending In India: Taking Stock Of Implications For Privacy And Autonomy, Vidushi Marda, Amber Sinha
Indian Journal of Law and Technology
In the last five years, the Fintech sector has thrived in India, with Machine Learning (ML) driven credit scoring based on alternative data, emerging as a growing segment. The credit scoring industry in India needs to be viewed in light of a careful examination of rights, inclusion, appropriate safeguards and discrimination, currently missing from the discourse and practices. In this paper, we explain how ML-based credit scoring works, and the regulatory and commercial factors that have enabled and impeded its growth in India. Through legal and technological analysis, richened by insights from qualitative interviews with entrepreneurs and practitioners, we provide …
Bringing Shadow Libraries Out Of Legal Shadows: An Opportunity For The Delhi High Court, Rahul Bajaj, Anchal Bhateja
Bringing Shadow Libraries Out Of Legal Shadows: An Opportunity For The Delhi High Court, Rahul Bajaj, Anchal Bhateja
Indian Journal of Law and Technology
At the heart of the copyright bargain is the need to strike a balance between fostering creativity, by incentivizing producers of intellectual property and promoting the interests of the public at large. These two are often in tension with each other. Some cases bring this tension into sharp focus. The ongoing litigation in the Delhi high Court, on the legality of shadow libraries - Libgen and Sci Hub - is one such case. The case has seminal importance for ensuring that the right to education is duly respected and fulfilled.
In this paper, we argue that this litigation offers the …
Do Judges Understand Technology? How Attorneys And Advocates View Judicial Responsibility In Cyberstalking And Cyberharassment Cases, Kateryna Kaplun
Do Judges Understand Technology? How Attorneys And Advocates View Judicial Responsibility In Cyberstalking And Cyberharassment Cases, Kateryna Kaplun
International Journal on Responsibility
As new technologies emerge and are increasingly used to commit interpersonal cybercrimes like cyberstalking and cyberharassment, the legal system lags in assisting victims in obtaining justice in these types of experiences. This qualitative research study explores how attorney and advocate interviewees from Illinois, New Jersey, and New York view judges’ responsibility to the law in cyberstalking and cyberharassment cases. This study finds three themes: judges’ lack of understanding of technology and its harms, discretion, and law on the books versus law in action as important factors and frameworks that contribute to why judges do not consider the importance of technology …

Social media users benefit from a more personalized and interactive connection with public figures and others they engage with via social media. However, such engagement requires active effort from the public figure and can only occur when the celebrity is available for such sessions. This disclosure describes techniques, implemented with specific user permission, to train an artificial intelligence (AI) model based on user data of an individual or entity. The trained model can represent the individual’s personality and engage in online interactions on behalf of the individual or entity with users of a social media platform, a messaging/chat service, audio …

Trauma And Stigma In Aids Literature: Tony Kushner’S Angels In America (1995) And Colm Tóibín’S The Blackwater Lightship (1999), J. Javier Torres-Fernández
Journal of Franco-Irish Studies
This paper explores the representation of trauma and stigma tied to HIV/AIDS in The Blackwater Lightship (1999) by Colm Tóibín and Angels in America (1995) by Tony Kushner. Both works arguably respond to the socio-political and biomedical crisis that affected queer identities and international politics. These experiences of health and illness highlight the silenced and marginalized voices of those infected with HIV during the 80s and 90s. HIV/AIDS-related stigma and shame marked the LGBTQ+ community under the illness as punishment metaphor for their sexuality. The role of politics and religion remains fundamental in the historical silence around this illness and …
The [Dis] Advantage Of Studying Higher Education (He) With Dyslexia, Keith Murphy
The [Dis] Advantage Of Studying Higher Education (He) With Dyslexia, Keith Murphy
Journal of Franco-Irish Studies
Contemporary discourse and literature surrounding dyslexia is often dominated by notions of disability, deficit, lack, vulnerability, and social expectancies around achievement in education. This paper explores that when students identify dyslexia as a limitation, it becomes a barrier to successful learning and has a negative effect on their identity, which impacts them socially and academically, leading to vicissitudes, voice suppression and what I term, academic imprisonment. Accepting dyslexia as an integral part of the self and viewing it through a prism of difference as opposed to a deficit, are emerging themes for students with dyslexia to help achieve, while studying …
