Background/aim: Impaired trunk control is common in neurological disorders; however, trunk control has not been examined in patients with cervical dystonia (CD). Therefore, the primary aim was to compare trunk control between patients with CD and healthy people. The secondary aim was to investigate the relationship between trunk control and balance, functional mobility, and disease severity in patients with CD. Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study included 32 patients with CD and 32 healthy people. Trunk control was compared using the trunk impairment scale (TIS) that consists of three subscales: static sitting balance, dynamic sitting balance, and trunk coordination between …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background and aim: The optimal sarcopenia measurement method in patients with a diagnosis of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is unknown. It has been found that temporal muscle thickness (TMT) may reflect sarcopenia and be associated with survival, but the relationship between temporal muscle area (TMA) and GBM prognosis has never been evaluated before. The primary outcome of the study was to evaluate the relationship between TMA/TMT and overall survival (OS) time in newly diagnosed GBM patients. Materials and methods: The data of patients who presented at the university hospital between January 2009 and January 2019 with a confirmed diagnosis of glioblastoma …

Screening The “Invisible Population” Of Older Adult Patients For Prescription Pain Reliever Non-Medical Use And Use Disorders, Alyssa M. Falise, Vinita Sharma, Carolin C. Hoeflich, Catalina Lopez-Quintero, Catherine W. Striley
Public and Population Health Faculty Publications and Presentations
Background: In the United States, the number of older adults reporting non-medical use of prescription pain relievers (NMUPPR) between 2015 and 2019 has remained constant, while those meeting criteria for opioid use disorders (OUDs) between 2013 and 2018 increased three-fold. These rates are expected to increase due to increased life expectancy among this population coupled with higher rates of substance use. However, they have consistently lower screening rates for problematic prescription pain reliever use, compared to younger cohorts. Objectives: This commentary reviewed trends in older adult NMUPPR and OUDs and reviewed several available screening tools. We then considered …

The Relationship Between Childhood Maltreatment And A Woman’S Desire To Have Children, Tayah Simpson
The Relationship Between Childhood Maltreatment And A Woman’S Desire To Have Children, Tayah Simpson
Psychology | Senior Theses
This study evaluated the relationship between childhood maltreatment and feelings about parenting among adult females. It was hypothesized that women with a history of maltreatment during their developmental years would have less desire to have children than females of similar age who were not maltreated. The Childhood Maltreatment History and Desire to Have Children Questionnaires were completed by 51 females aged 20 years and older. Results indicated a statistically significant lower desire to parent among females with histories of Low and Severe childhood maltreatment than for females without such history. Further comparisons revealed the same pattern of findings when women …
Primary Care Provider Adherence To Quality Measures: Advance Directives, Hayden S. Kilgore
Primary Care Provider Adherence To Quality Measures: Advance Directives, Hayden S. Kilgore
DNP Projects
The need for advance directives is increasingly relevant to the current healthcare system. Advancing technology has transformed chronic, terminal illnesses to conditions that cause slow debilitation. Individuals now enter into care alone more often than in the past. With no advance directive in place, families and/or healthcare providers are forced to make difficult healthcare decisions alone. Advance-care-planning affords the opportunity for disease detection and improving patient outcomes while lowering overall costs; however, such conversations are not easy to approach. Therefore, the purpose of this project was to deliver education to primary care providers in rural Mississippi to improve provider attitudes, …
A Brief Mindfulness Intervention And Its Effect On Stress Response And Recovery: Rumination As A Moderator., Kacie Peters
A Brief Mindfulness Intervention And Its Effect On Stress Response And Recovery: Rumination As A Moderator., Kacie Peters
Lewis Honors College Thesis Collection
It is inevitable that every human will encounter many stressors in their life, so research on this topic is generalizable to many and carries a heavy weight. While facing one small stressor may not be enough to have a significant impact, it is the degree of the stressors and the response to them that can dictate whether or not it leads to serious consequences (WHO). Stress can be characterized as a stressor or combined stressors that lead to physical, emotional, and mental strain (WHO). It is important that we know the ways in which to best recover from stress, otherwise …

Participants attended weekly behavioral sessions, comply with a reduced calorie diet, and complete 100 min of physical activity (PA)/wk. Cognitive function tasks at baseline included Flanker (attention), Stroop (executive control) and working memory, demographics, body weight and cardiovascular fitness were assessed at baseline. Session attendance, adherence …
Utilizing An Educational Intervention To Increase Advance Directive Completion Rates For African Americans In A Family Practice Clinic In Louisiana, Nicole N. Richards
Utilizing An Educational Intervention To Increase Advance Directive Completion Rates For African Americans In A Family Practice Clinic In Louisiana, Nicole N. Richards
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Abstract
Advance care planning (ACP) is a process that allows for an individual to document ahead of time the medical treatment they want if they are unable to communicate after an unexpected life-threatening situation. The legal forms used to document these wishes are called advance directives (ADs). Since African Americans (AAs) develop chronic disease at younger ages and often experience shorter lifespans than other racial groups, it is imperative that they have a clear understanding of the pros and cons of ACP. Regrettably, because AAs seldom complete ADs, more aggressive, and often, ineffective medical care is provided at the end …

Cat Part Iv: Occupational Therapy Interventions To Support Upper Extremity Spasticity In Older Adults Following A Stroke, Mary Redlin, Allie Reiffenberger, Shannon Ring, Aubrey Rude
Critically Appraised Topics
This critically appraised topic focuses on interventions for improving hand functions in activities of daily living (ADLs) for elderly adults who have chronic upper extremity spasticity following a stroke. For the purpose of this critically appraised topic, the focus will be on the elderly population, defined as being age 55 and older; research indicates stroke is most prevalent in this population (Mayo Clinic, 2022). When considering a particular theory, the Ecology of Human Performance (EHP) is the most suitable model for our focus question (Dunn, 2017). The Ecology of Human Performance is focused on the person and environment to increase …

Early Identification Of Barriers To Medication Adherence In The Elderly Population Through The Use Of A Modified Screening Tool, Miranda Joyner, Blake Meranto
Early Identification Of Barriers To Medication Adherence In The Elderly Population Through The Use Of A Modified Screening Tool, Miranda Joyner, Blake Meranto
Doctoral Projects
Medication nonadherence (MNA) is a major contributor to hospitalizations and accounts for billions of dollars spent every year on health care. Despite medications being prescribed in nearly 75% of healthcare interactions, it is estimated that 33 to 50% of Americans do not take their medications as prescribed, if at all (Bartlett Ellis et al., 2020; Kleinsinger, 2018). The COM-B (Capability, Opportunity, Motivation, Behavior) Model used in this DNP project suggests that an individual must have the capability, opportunity, and motivation to enact a certain behavior, and should any of these areas be lacking, the behavior is unlikely to occur. This …

Effects Of An Age Suit Simulation On Nursing Students’ Perspectives On Providing Care To Older Persons - An Education Intervention Study, Björn Bouwmeester Stjernetun, Jenny Hallgren, Catharina Gillsjö
College of Nursing Faculty Publications
Nursing students are important future health care providers to the growing number of older persons in society. However, two barriers are their common ageist attitudes and lack of interest in geriatrics. This is a concern in light of the global demand for nurses and a challenge that need to be addressed in nurse education. Age suit simulation has been shown to affect the attitudes of students toward older persons, but the important context of home is often missing from studies. Accordingly, the present study employed a quantitative approach with the goal of investigating the effects of aging simulation with an …

The Impact Thinking Framework: A Process For Adbancing Research-To-Ractice Initiatives In Neuroaesthetics, Susan Magsamen, Tasha L. Golden, Catriona A. Towriss, Joy Allen
Faculty Works
Neuroaesthetics research explores brain, body and behavioral responses to engagement with the arts and other aesthetic sensory experiences. Evidence indicates that such experiences can help address various psychological, neurological and physiological disorders, and that they can support mental and physical well-being and learning in the general population. The interdisciplinary nature of this work contributes to its impact and promise; however, it also creates challenges as various disciplines approach and define research and practice in varied ways. Recent field-wide reports have noted that a consensus translational framework is needed to support further neuroaesthetics research that can deliver meaningful knowledge and interventions. …

Part 5: Death And Dying In Hampton Roads, Dragas Center For Economic Analysis And Policy, Old Dominion University
State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads
Death and taxes may be inevitable, but where we die is usually not a topic of public policy or discussion. Hospice care is the specialized treatment that provides support and comfort to patients who are terminally ill with a general life expectancy of six months or less. In this chapter, we take a close look at serious disease and hospice care in the United States and Virginia. We examine the demand for hospice care by Medicare beneficiaries as well as the changing nature of hospice care suppliers as now more than two-thirds of hospices nationwide operate as for-profit entities.
Diurnal Cortisol, Mood, And Hormonal Contraceptives: An Examination Of The Differences In Diurnal Cortisol Patterns And Mood Between Hormonal Contraceptive Users And Non-Users, Irene Hanabergh
Theses & ETDs
Cortisol is a steroid hormone that plays a role in the physiological response to stress. One standard pattern of cortisol change is the diurnal rhythm which peaks in the morning and declines throughout the day. Disruptions in this pattern are linked to chronic stress and poorer mental health outcomes. Previous research has found blunted cortisol responses as well as increased stress and depressive scores in hormonal contraceptive (HC) users compared to non-users. Yet little is known about the effect of HC use on average diurnal cortisol patterns. The goal of this study is to examine differences in diurnal cortisol pattern …
