Are You Ready For Retirement? Retirement And Quality Of Life As Resources, Hyunsook Kang, Gina Causin, Mary Olle

Journal of Human Services: Training, Research, and Practice

Abstract

Retirement in later life has been considered as an important aspect of life course, because it contributes in many ways to one’s life change, social relations updates, and health declines. Although aging brings with changes and declining all aspects of life, many older adults still remain in active after their retirement. This study will address about relationships between older adults’ retirement and its’ quality-of-life resource. Retirement, itself, may be associated with a loss of professional colleagues and work-related friends (Gloria et al, 2015). By contrast, growing numbers of older adults may maintain their active participation in social networks through …

Background: A few cross-sectional studies have highlighted inconsistent associations between cardiovascular disease (CVD) and musculoskeletal conditions. We sought to investigate the relationship between clinical CVD including subtypes, compromised muscle function, as well as incident self-reported and injurious falls in older women. Materials and methods: 1431 community-dwelling older women (mean age ± SD; 75.2 ± 2.7 years) were included in over 14.5 years of a prospective study, the Perth Longitudinal Study of Ageing in Women. CVD (up to 18-years prior to the baseline visit) and injurious fall hospitalizations over 14.5 years were obtained from linked health records. Self-reported falls for five …

We studied the genetic associations of a previously developed Metabolomic Risk Score (MRS) for Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and beta-aminoisobutyric acid metabolite (BAIBA)-the metabolite highlighted by results from a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of the MCI-MRS, and assessed their association with MCI in datasets of diverse race/ethnicities. We first performed a GWAS for the MCI-MRS and BAIBA, in Hispanic/Latino adults (n = 3890) from the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL). We identified ten independent genome-wide significant (p value <5 × 10-8) variants associated with MCI-MRS or BAIBA. Variants associated with the MCI-MRS are located in the Alanine-Glyoxylate Aminotransferase 2 (AGXT2 gene), which is known to be associated with BAIBA metabolism. Variants associated with BAIBA are located in the AGXT2 gene and in the SLC6A13 gene. Next, we tested the variants' association with MCI in independent datasets of n = 3178 HCHS/SOL older individuals, n = 3775 European Americans, and n = 1032 African Americans from the Atherosclerosis Risk In Communities (ARIC) study. Variants were considered associated with MCI if their p value <0.05 in the meta-analysis of the three datasets and their direction of association was consistent with expectation. Rs16899972 and rs37369 from the AGXT2 region were associated with MCI. Mediation analysis supported the mediation effect of BAIBA between the two genetic variants and MCI (p value = 0.004 for causal mediated effect). In summary, genetic variants in the AGXT2 region are associated with MCI in Hispanic/Latino, African, and European American populations in the USA, and their effect is likely mediated by changes in BAIBA levels.

Financial Illiteracy, Tyler Maloney

Academic Festival

No matter the socioeconomic class, people deserve sufficient resources to have opportunities for a better life. The increase of financial procarities creates a greater strain on health, building upon the problems people in poverty already face. The cycle that further cripples generations of low socioeconomic individuals and families must be fixed. In order to end this suffering, implementation of health and educational resources must become the cornerstone.

Food Related Intrusive Thoughts: A Pilot Study, Hoor Ul Ain Apr 2023

Food Related Intrusive Thoughts: A Pilot Study, Hoor Ul Ain

Honors Theses

Food related intrusive thoughts (FRITs), a type of intrusive thoughts, might be associated with greater frequency of food intake, greater anxiety and distress, and negative affect in general. However, little is known about the experience of FRITs in the moment. I hypothesized that (1) momentary food related intrusive thoughts or FRITs would be positively related to momentary negative affect and (2) that time since eating will moderate this relationship such that people with more time since eating will show a stronger positive relationship between FRITs and negative affect. These relationships were not found to be significant; however, there was a …

Sense Of Relatedness From Racial Groups Within Maltreated Youth, Jessica Castillo, Jaelin Isquith Apr 2023

Sense Of Relatedness From Racial Groups Within Maltreated Youth, Jessica Castillo, Jaelin Isquith

Undergraduate Research Symposium Posters

Sense of relatedness is a crucial factor in the development of meaningful interpersonal relationships (Datu, 2017). Interpersonal relationships have demonstrated a significant impact on how individuals cope with their environment (Yulina et al., 2021). Youth in low socioeconomic environments are at higher risk of being exposed to unstable relationships which further increases this vulnerable population to learning ineffective interpersonal skills throughout their lifespan (Colman & Wisdom, 2004). Youth from marginalized groups have higher risk at experiencing negative life experiences, for example economic inequalities, heightened distress, systemic oppression, and economic inequalities (Hatch & Dohrenwend, 2007). Previous research has suggested African-American individuals …

The Project That Claire, Uh I Mean The Student Completed: Relative Clauses And Repair Disfluencies, Claire O’Shaughnessy Apr 2023

The Project That Claire, Uh I Mean The Student Completed: Relative Clauses And Repair Disfluencies, Claire O’Shaughnessy

Honors Theses

Several areas of psycholinguistics focus on the role of memory in language processing. Two of these areas are repair disfluencies and complex syntactic structures; however, these two topics have traditionally been investigated completely separately from one another. The current experiment combines these two topics by presenting listeners with spoken sentences containing subject-extracted relative clauses (SRCs) and object-extracted relative clauses (ORCs) in which the semantic similarity between the critical noun phrases (NPs) was manipulated. In addition, the sentences could be spoken fluently, or there could be a repair disfluency in which the reparandum contained information that would be potentially helpful in …

Coping Among Older Adults During Covid-19 Pandemic: A Qualitative Research Study, Nicole Sperling, Vaibhavi Siddhartha, Emily Gorskie, Rebecca Barakat

Academic Festival

Previous research has discovered that as people age, their coping skills are enhanced due to different life experiences and resources accumulated over time. However, due to the severity of COVID-19, older adults were faced with hardships that resulted in them needing to cope. COVID-19 posed unique challenges such as quarantining and social distancing measures. The main objective of this current study was to determine how older adults have coped with the COVID-19 pandemic and how the pandemic has impacted their overall well-being. In this current qualitative research study, forty-one older adults were recruited to talk about their experiences during the …

The Use Of Simulation And Standardized Patients To Enhance Nursing Student Competency In Caring For Lgbtq Individuals, Laura Pittiglio Apr 2023

The Use Of Simulation And Standardized Patients To Enhance Nursing Student Competency In Caring For Lgbtq Individuals, Laura Pittiglio

General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)

HP 2020 proposes that increasing training for health care providers in the provision of culturally competent care will improve health outcomes for this vulnerable population. Nurses are usually the first point of care for individuals seeking care. Therefore, that initial patient-provider encounter can influence decisions regarding future health care. In order to enhance nursing competencies in culturally competent care, a simulation experience using a narrative script and a high-fidelity manikin was incorporated into a undergraduate nursing course. The simulation scenario was designed to facilitate the delivery of healthcare to LGBTQ identifying individuals. A pre-simulation and post-simulation survey was administered in …

Co-Designing Assistive Technology With And For Persons Living With Dementia, Dympna O'Sullivan, Jonathan Turner, Siobhan O'Neill, Micheal Wilson, Julie Doyle

Conference papers

Dementia is a chronic and progressive neurodegenerative illness, which can lead to significant difficulties in a person’s capacity to perform activities of daily living (ADLs) and engage in meaningful activities. There is an acute need, which digital health technologies can potentially fulfil, to provide proactive support for persons living with dementia (PLwD) and their caregivers. However, there is limited involvement of PLwD in the design of technology that could be used to support their personal plans for independent living at home. In this paper, we describe how we are employing a co-design methodology to support engagement in an assistive technology …

Combating Long-Term Care Isolation Through Healing Touch, Veronica J. Butts Apr 2023

Combating Long-Term Care Isolation Through Healing Touch, Veronica J. Butts

ONU Student Research Colloquium

Loneliness is defined as feelings of disconnectedness, lack of belonging, and perceived isolation that can manifest as a physical or psychological state. In long-term care facilities, this sentiment can develop into social isolation in which residents are disconnected from family, removed from familiar environments, and suffer from various cognitive conditions that cause them to socially withdraw. Various clinical studies seek to identify the connection between isolation, loneliness, and lack of human touch with worsening health conditions and outcomes, determining that there is a correlation between this feeling of discontent. To combat this, healing touch has been a rising topic of …

Racial Diversity And Law Firm Economics, Jack Thorlin Apr 2023

Racial Diversity And Law Firm Economics, Jack Thorlin

Arkansas Law Review

There is an eternal temptation to think that if one recognizes a moral problem and does something about it, then one is blameless even if the action taken does not solve the problem. We usually recognize that it is absurd to credit intent when the disconnect from results is vast—consider the rightfully mocked tendency of people to respond to tragedies by declaring that their “thoughts and prayers” are with the victims rather than taking any meaningful step to ameliorate their suffering. People still engage in such posturing because the behavior benefits them in several ways: (a) others see that the …
