Suffering In Search Of A Methodological Frame: Interdisciplinarity In The Context Of The Gendered Impact Of Climate Migration, Becky L. Jacobs
Scholarly Works
In this essay, the author places the gendered impact of climate migration within the methodological frame of scholars such as geographers Sylvia Winters and Doreen Massey, historian Achille Mbembe, philosopher Gilles Deleuze, philosopher and psychoanalyst Félix Guattari, and anthropologist Tim Ingold. The author discusses the importance of interdisciplinarity and describes the gender-specific risks related to climate displacement before delving into theory.

Plural Communities: A Cultural Mapping Project + A Framework Plan For Cherokee Village, Arkansas, Community Design Center
Plural Communities: A Cultural Mapping Project + A Framework Plan For Cherokee Village, Arkansas, Community Design Center
Community Design Center Project Reports
What do urban designers do with culture? How might we redevelop a mid-century modern planned community through the mapping of cultural influences that shaped it? We explored memory and heritage central to cultural mapping and its participatory-based forms of public inquiry. 54 drawings integrate maps, folklore materials, archived media, photographs, and new drawings into five synchronic cultural frameworks that shaped Cherokee Village—Native American heritage, Ozark pioneer and folk heritage, camping and scouting, midcentury planned communities, and regional modernism in design and planning.
Cherokee Village was developed within a mid-twentieth century planning ethos that valued uniformity …

In March 2022, the President tasked the Provost with leading a diverse taskforce, coordinated by three co-leaders, that grew to include 21 members from across the campus community. The taskforce created a timeline and process that engaged internal and external stakeholders, each of whom contributed personal and professional insight into how EIU might define, measure, and support high-impact success initiatives in its classrooms, on its campus, and across the region.
Targeted surveys (one external survey and two internal surveys), group meetings, and four public town halls (two in Fall 2022 and two in Spring 2023) helped to sharpen and prioritize …

The Impacts Of Active Learning, Kayla Badgie
The Impacts Of Active Learning, Kayla Badgie
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This literature review identifies the impacts that using active learning has on elementary school students and student achievement. Research to seek this information began by identifying different studies using an active learning approach and then verifying that they were elementary students and had a focus on the impacts of using that style of learning. Results indicated different forms of active learning implementation, impacts on students academically, and impacts on students non-academically. In the end, students who are taught and engage with an active learning approach benefit positively in a variety of ways from the use of this approach. Some of …

Legacy Industry And Redlining In American Cities, Mark D. Bjelland, Jacob Foll
Summer Research
Throughout the 1930s, the HOLC created residential security maps which graded residential areas from best to hazardous. This study investigated the connection between the proximity of industry to HOLC-graded zones on residential security maps in the top 50 most populous metropolitan regions in the United States in 1930, utilizing both geospatial and textual analysis. In ArcGIS Pro, ModelBuilder was used to automate the process of identifying and separating HOLC graded zones, creating buffers around industrial land use polygons, clipping the buffers to the HOLC graded zones, and calculating the area of the HOLC graded zones in proximity to industrial area. …
What About Tornadoes Makes Cars Fly?, Fred Haan, Minji Lee
What About Tornadoes Makes Cars Fly?, Fred Haan, Minji Lee
Summer Research
Tornadoes move and evolve throughout their lifetime, causing several types of forces against objects. Although vehicles are observed to fly in real tornadoes, simulating this experimentally and numerically has been very difficult – the vehicles do not seem to want to fly. We studied the effect of pressure gradient forces. These have typically been ignored in past simulations, so we estimated them to see if they add the missing force to get things to fly. Some researchers have made mathematical models of tornado wind fields, so we used those models to estimate pressure gradient forces. We also used some full-scale …

ASEE North Midwest Section Annual Conference 2023 Publications
Background - Distractions create well-known impediments to student learning. Many researchers have proposed techniques to overcome the challenges associated with distractions in the classroom.
Purpose - Our study investigates instructors’ experiences in using various theories and practices in a variety of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math) and HSS (Humanities & Social Sciences) classrooms applied in a post-secondary setting. We examine how well the techniques work in practice, investigating questions such as which techniques were most employed, whether instructors perceived improvements in student engagement, and whether instructors plan to use the techniques in the future or advocate the use of …

Access to electricity remains elusive for over 700 million people worldwide. Although much attention has been given to solving this vexing problem in the context of communities in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, often overlooked is that in even within so-called developed countries access to electricity might not be universal. It is estimated that more than 200,000 people living in North America do not have a connection to the electric grid. Many of these people live on Native American reservations or other Tribal Lands. Recently, there has been a concerted effort in the public, private, and non-profit sectors to electrify …

Considering The Shrinking Physical, Social, And Psychological Spaces Of Rohingya Refugees In Southeast Asia, Kendra L. Duran, Robin Al-Haddad, Saleh Ahmed
Global Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
Refugees experience shrinking social, economic, political, and physical spaces at astonishing rates. However, these shrinking spaces are challenging to trace simultaneously and are rarely considered in policymaking or analysis. Using the Rohingya case study, this paper implores policy analysis to include these spaces, conceptually categorizing them into physical, social, and psychological spaces. Here we chronologize the plight of Rohingya refugees and identify how their spaces have changed over time. Our findings reveal four primary causal relationships linked to Rohingya refugees' fluctuating spaces, including: (I) Bangladesh's policy framework has kept the Rohingya largely isolated, yet their public-private partnerships have expanded their …

Democracy's Other Boundary Problem: The Law Of Disqualification, Tom Ginsburg, Aziz Z. Huq, David Landau
Scholarly Publications
Almost all national constitutions contain one or more ways to disqualify specific individuals from political office. Indeed, the U.S. Constitution incorporates at least four overlapping pathways toward disqualification. This power of disqualifying specific individuals or groups stands at the heart of the complex project of maintaining democratic rule. In practice, disqualification can work both as an instrument for preserving democratic rule and also as a knife against it. This Article is the first to systematically analyze the complex positive and normative questions raised by disqualification. We offer both a positive account of the function that disqualification plays in constitutional ordering …

Ousmane Sembène : Une Esthétique Du Diiso, Mbaye Diouf
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
The representation of public speech continues to determine two major components of African text and film, that is, the dialogical and the narrative. As a site of relational negotiations, reminders of the doxa and ceremonial practices, this public word is formulated and refined in instances of verbal performance such as consultation (diiso), panegyric (tagg), farce (foh) or tirade (xas). For an author such as Ousmane Sembène, the elaboration of the text (Le dernier de l’Empire) and of the film (Guelwaar) constitutes a moment of aestheticization of the diiso …
Deducting Dobbs: The Tax Treatment Of Abortion-Related Travel Benefits, Samantha J. Prince
Deducting Dobbs: The Tax Treatment Of Abortion-Related Travel Benefits, Samantha J. Prince
Faculty Scholarly Works
In 2022, Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization overturned both Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey thereby giving the states carte blanche to do as they wish regarding abortion access. The decision created upheaval in the United States. However, it also provided the impetus for the creation of a new employee benefit, abortion-related travel benefits.
Thirteen states had anti-abortion trigger bans that were unenforceable until Dobbs. Several other states have passed legislation that criminalizes, or significantly restricts, abortion access. Women residing in these states will now endure greater financial, health, and temporal challenges to travel out of state …

Seeing The Unseen: Bridging Realities Of Experience Through Dependent Origination, Shubham Sapkota
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Overall, this project looks into the problem and history of colonialism, the impact of it on the people and knowledge coming from South Asia, and offers an alternate view to understand our world. The notion of seeing the unseen acknowledges that there are facets of our day-to-day reality that we are often unaware of when thinking about our communities and ourselves. Yet, being able to fully acknowledge and understand the seen and unseen aspects of our community is necessary if we are to work towards improving our communities for the long run. By relying on the Buddhist teaching and discourse …
School District Demographic Change Through The Lens Of High School Students: A Phenomenological Case Study, Isaac S. Solano
School District Demographic Change Through The Lens Of High School Students: A Phenomenological Case Study, Isaac S. Solano
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Over the past two to three decades, inner-ring suburban school districts in certain areas around the United States have experienced significant demographic change. These shifts influence who lives in these communities, as well as who attends schools in these K–12 school districts. In a metropolitan area, in the Rocky Mountain West Region of the United States, numerous school districts are experiencing such shifts. Although past empirical research has examined shifts through the lens of school leaders and teachers, few studies have explored how students experience this change.
This qualitative hermeneutic phenomenological case study examines how high school students experience these …
Sense Of Community And (Third) Place Among Young Adults In Permanent Supportive Housing: A Mixed-Methods Inquiry, Danielle Maude Littman
Sense Of Community And (Third) Place Among Young Adults In Permanent Supportive Housing: A Mixed-Methods Inquiry, Danielle Maude Littman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Unhoused young people have often endured co-occurring experiences of marginalization, including long-term abuse and neglect from systems which have failed to support them. Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) is a formal intervention which seeks to offer stability and support to young people. This three-manuscript dissertation uses community-engaged mixed methods to understand sense of community, sense of place, and third places among young adults in PSH in Grand Junction, Colorado.
The first manuscript used longitudinal mixed methods to understand how PSH residents’ (N = 27) sense of community shifts over 1.5 years of living in PSH. We found that residents’ sense …
A Participatory Drone Mapping And Critical Physical Geography Of Water Security For Irrigation In Northern Ghana, Dinko Hanaan Dinko
A Participatory Drone Mapping And Critical Physical Geography Of Water Security For Irrigation In Northern Ghana, Dinko Hanaan Dinko
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Dam discourse frequently incorrectly assumes that their emergence unilinearly translates to an expansion of economic opportunities while not considering how dams become sites for the reproduction of inequality and injustice. This dissertation investigates how the politics of irrigation water access are nested in a complex web of physical materialities of the 'natural' environment and power relations, with lived consequences on differentiated social identities in semiarid Ghana. The research draws on transdisciplinary perspectives from political ecology, embodiment, critical physical geography, and mixed methods, including interviews, focus group discussions, surveys, participatory drone mapping, and laboratory analysis of soil biochemical properties. The study …

No. 57: Pandemic Precarity And Food Insecurity In Urban Ghana During Covid-19, Elizabeth Opiyo Onyango, Bernard Owusu, Jonathan Crush
Hungry Cities Partnership
The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on urban households in the Global South has not yet been adequately explored, despite an emerging consensus that impacts of the pandemic were more severe in urban than rural Africa. This paper addresses the knowledge gap by examining the relationship between pandemic precarity and food insecurity in Ghana’s urban areas during the pandemic in 2020. The data comes from the World Bank (WB) and Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) COVID-19 High-Frequency Phone Survey. Using a sub-sample of 1,423 urban households, the paper evaluates household experiences of the pandemic. Our findings show that household demographic characteristics …

Labour Of Love: Chinese-To- English Fan Translations Of Bl Web Novels, Kirk Kanesaka, Gladys Mac
World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications
The genre of boys’ love (BL) has enjoyed huge popularity since its Japanese beginnings in the 1960s, and it has taken root in popular cultures in many countries. BL arrived in China via fan translations of Japanese manga into Chinese. With the rise of online fiction platforms in China, local writers produced widely popular male–male romances that gained traction locally and abroad. The outflow of Chinese BL mirrors fan activities that led to the popularity of Japanese manga and anime in the United States. Fan translations of Chinese-to-English BL fiction are one of the most important links in introducing Chinese …
Perception Vs. Reality: The Influence Of Civic Experiences In High School On Adult Civic Engagement, Kaya Bottmeyer
Perception Vs. Reality: The Influence Of Civic Experiences In High School On Adult Civic Engagement, Kaya Bottmeyer
Political Science & International Studies | Senior Theses
Research on political socialization has shown that individuals’ families and education play a significant role in their later political actions and attitudes, but more needs to be understood on how large the role of education is and, specifically, what impact secondary education has on people’s political socialization. Literature suggests that educational standards that require more civics or social science courses are more effective in creating civically engaged individuals, and curriculums that employ service learning and experiential learning techniques are even more effective at increasing civic engagement, but to what extent does a person's perception of their educational experience factor into …
