Authentic Assessment And Embedding Sustainable Literacy And Technology Skills In Tourism Education., Jennifer Stewart, Catherine Gorman Jan 2023

Authentic Assessment And Embedding Sustainable Literacy And Technology Skills In Tourism Education., Jennifer Stewart, Catherine Gorman

Irish Journal of Academic Practice

John Tribe proposed a model for ethical tourism which ‘utilises the Aristotelian idea of actions guided by practical wisdom, and that can contribute to curriculum, which participates in ‘tourism world-making' (Tribe, 2002, p323). Considering the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the integration of sustainability literacy into tourism education becomes essential for nurturing graduates capable of sustainable practices. This case study, employing a virtual fieldtrip (VFT) with authentic assessment, examines the integration of sustainability literacy and technology skills. Whilst technology enhances engagement, its role in the VFT does not surpass traditional methods. Integrated assessment and a multi-stakeholder approach make learning comprehensive. Yet, …

Operational water-resource forecasters, such as the Colorado Basin River Forecast Center (CBRFC) in the Western United States, currently rely on historical records to calibrate the temperature-index models used for snowmelt runoff predictions. This data dependence is increasingly challenged, with global and regional climatological factors changing the seasonal snowpack dynamics in mountain watersheds. To evaluate and improve the CBRFC modeling options, this work ran the physically based snow energy balance iSnobal model, forced with outputs from the High-Resolution Rapid Refresh (HRRR) numerical weather prediction model across 4 years in a Colorado River Basin forecast region. Compared to in situ, remotely sensed, …

Simulations Of The Holocene Climate In Europe Using An Interactive Downscaling Within The Iloveclim Model (Version 1.1), Frank Arthur, Didier M. Roche, Ralph Fyfe, Aurélien Quiquet, Hans Renssen

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Abstract. This study presents the application of an interactive downscaling in Europe using iLOVECLIM (a model of intermediate complexity), increasing its atmospheric resolution from 5.56 to 0.25∘ kilometric. A transient simulation using the appropriate climate forcings for the entire Holocene (11.5–0 ka BP) was done for both the standard version of the model and with an interactive downscaling applied. Our results show that simulations from downscaling present spatial variability that agrees better with proxy-based reconstructions and other climate models as compared to the standard model. The downscaling scheme simulates much higher (by at least a factor of 2) precipitation maxima …

Values Of Literature In Geographical Research: A Case Study Of French Geographers' Study Of Literature, Jia Zhao Jan 2023

Values Of Literature In Geographical Research: A Case Study Of French Geographers' Study Of Literature, Jia Zhao

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Since the 1970s, French geographers' studies of literature have heralded the rise of geographical approaches to literature in France, paving the way for the later schools of “geographical criticism” and “geographic poetics”. This article takes French geographers' research on literature as an example, in order to reveal the value of literature in geographical research. The first value lies in its function of witnessing. Writers' geographical description and their perception of the social structure of a region provide references for geographers. Some geographers believe that the value of literature lies not in the accuracy of description, but in the writer's ability …

Dust And Loess As Archives And Agents Of Climate And Climate Change In The Late Paleozoic Earth System, Gerilyn S. Soreghan, Nicholas G. Heavens, Lily Pfeifer, Michael J. Soreghan

School of Earth & Environment Departmental Research

Palaeo-loess and silty aeolian-marine strata are well recognized across the Carboniferous–Permian of equatorial Pangaea. Aeolian-transported dust and loess appear in the Late Devonian in the west, are common by the Late Carboniferous, and predominate across equatorial Pangaea by the Permian. The thickest loess deposits in Earth history – in excess of 1000 m – date from this time, and archive unusually dusty equatorial conditions, especially compared to the dearth of equatorial dust in the Cenozoic. Loess archives a confluence of silt generation, aeolian emission and transport, and ultimate accumulation in dust traps that included ephemerally wet surfaces and epeiric seas. …

Reverse Social Impact Of Oil Palm Plantation Expansion: A Study Of Three Communities In Jambi, Indonesia, Pahmi Pahmi, Budhi Gunawan, Johan Iskandar, Rini Soemarwoto

Forest and Society

Studies on the social impacts of oil palm development have focused on various communities with distinct characteristics. Due to the rarity of comparative investigations, this study aimed to examine the impact of oil palm plantation expansion on the Suku Anak Dalam, Jambi Malay, and the Javanese transmigrant, the three communities with different socio-economic characteristics. In-depth interviews and observations were conducted to understand the communities' interaction and dependence on forest resources. The study also conducted a household census to assess 67 Malay and 66 Javanese transmigrant families. However, a household census could not be conducted to asses 45 families of …

Background: Viral suppression is the ultimate goal of the HIV treatment cascade and a primary endpoint of antiretroviral therapy. Empirical evidence found racial/ethnic disparities in viral suppression among people living with HIV (PWH), but the evidence of the relationship between racial/ethnic residential segregation and place-based viral suppression is scarce. Further exploring potential structural moderators in this relationship has substantial implications for healthcare policymaking and resource allocation. The current study aimed to investigate the spatial-temporal disparities in the HIV viral suppression rate across 46 counties in South Carolina from 2013 to 2018. We also examined the impact of racial/ethnic residential segregation …

Book Review: In The Shadow Of The Palms: More-Than-Human Becomings In West Papua. Sophie Chao. Duke University Press, 2022, Carter Beale Jan 2023

Book Review: In The Shadow Of The Palms: More-Than-Human Becomings In West Papua. Sophie Chao. Duke University Press, 2022, Carter Beale

Forest and Society

In the Shadow of the Palms offers a haunting and novel perspective on themes of dispossession and alienation wrought by the expansion of oil palm agribusiness in Indonesia. Drawing on fieldwork with a Marind community in the Upper Bian in West Papua, the text endeavors to describe such dispossessory dynamics from an embodied Marind ontology. Meticulous descriptions of interactions with various animal and plant species evidence a profound intersubjectivity of human and environment in the Marind world. Moreover, these encounters with multi-species entanglements often reveal how the Marind accommodate and assimilate the spiritual and material incursions inflicted by expanding oil …

Sandurot Festival As Mugna : Exploring Modernity And Belonging Through The Civic Festival, Lady Flor Niñal Partosa

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

Focusing on the Sandurot Festival organized by the City of Dumaguete in the Philippines, my study explores the process of embodying local identity as site to actualize modernity. To highlight this collaborative, creative, and often contentious process, I put forward the concept of mugna (a Cebuano word which means to create) to examine how social actors (such as festival organizers, cultural workers, and artists) configure nodes of belonging to the time and space of the city by engaging with notions of tradition, authenticity, progress, and development. As Cultural Studies stresses the significance of radical contextuality, I examine in this project …

The Evolution Of Life History Traits And Their Thermal Plasticity In Daphnia, Larry L. Bowman Jr., David M. Post Jan 2023

The Evolution Of Life History Traits And Their Thermal Plasticity In Daphnia, Larry L. Bowman Jr., David M. Post

ETSU Faculty Works

Few studies have explored the relative strength of ecogeographic versus lineage-specific effects on a global scale, particularly for poikilotherms, those organisms whose internal temperature varies with their environment. Here, we compile a global dataset of life history traits in Daphnia, at the species-and population-level, and use those data to parse the relative influences of lineage-specific effects and climate. We also compare the thermal response (plasticity) of life history traits and their dependence on climate, temperature, precipitation, and latitude. We found that the mode of evolution for life history traits varies but that the thermal response of life history traits most …
