Perceiving Critical Infrastructure With A New Awareness Of Cyber Risk, Duncad Card
Perceiving Critical Infrastructure With A New Awareness Of Cyber Risk, Duncad Card
Canadian Journal of Law and Technology
North America’s critical infrastructure has been the subject of cyber-attack, in various cycles of activity, for many years. In March of 2017, a cyber-attack caused periodic ‘‘blind-spots” for electricity distribution grid operators in the Western US for about 10 dangerous hours. In May of this year, there was panic at the gas pumps across many States in southeastern United States, which has been attributed to a cyber-attack on a major US pipeline that disrupted fuel supplies to the US East coast. US Commerce Secretary Raimondo soon after that attack announced that those sorts of attacks are becoming more frequent and …
The Organization Of Islamic Cooperation (Oic): Opportunities And Challenges For Practicing Culturally-Sensitive Mediation In Intra-Muslim Conflicts, Nirvana Ahmad
Theses and Dissertations
Established in 1969, the OIC sat a unique paradigm in the international order as an intergovernmental organization that claims a religious identity and mandate: working for Muslim unity and interests. In that pursuit, it has assumed the function of the peaceful settlement of disputes as one of its primary roles. Over half a century of its existence, not only did the OIC drift away from its founding principles and commitments; it is now condemned for turning into an arena for polarization among Muslims, where unchecked geopolitical competition has aroused rampant violence of all sorts.
The literature on the OIC extensively …
Estimating Solar Energy Production In Urban Areas For Electric Vehicles, Shaimaa Ahmed
Estimating Solar Energy Production In Urban Areas For Electric Vehicles, Shaimaa Ahmed
Theses and Dissertations
Cities have a high potential for solar energy from PVs installed on buildings' rooftops. There is an increased demand for solar energy in cities to reduce the negative effect of climate change. The thesis investigates solar energy potential in urban areas. It tries to determine how to detect and identify available rooftop areas, how to calculate suitable ones after excluding the effects of the shade, and the estimated energy generated from PVs. Geographic Information Sciences (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) are used in solar city planning. The goal of this research is to assess available and suitable rooftops areas using …
Revolution In Cuba And Iran: Toward A Unified Theory Of Analysis, Mason Sims
Revolution In Cuba And Iran: Toward A Unified Theory Of Analysis, Mason Sims
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis seeks to fill a small gap in the study of revolution through unifying approaches and theories utilized to explain the complex social phenomenon. To facilitate this, a large portion of the work focuses on revolution literature which has been chosen to represent authors from the earliest generations covering the subject to the more recent. In compiling and reviewing these works, it can be seen that there exist common lines of not just explanation, but also a continuous series of critiques resurfacing within each generation. Within this compilation lies the roots of the theory presented in this thesis, that …

BISNIS & BIROKRASI: Jurnal Ilmu Administrasi dan Organisasi
Social media has altered emergency communication between local governments and citizens. Studies on social media and natural disasters are expanding. Few studies have explored the crisis of social media use among local government officials. This study investigated how Indonesian leaders use social media. It used data scraping techniques with the Twitter API and the http://tweepy.readthedocs.io/en/v3.5.0/api.html#tweepy-api-twitter-api-wrapper library to collect tweets from each governor's account in Bahasa, Indonesia, between January 1, 2020, and December 31, 2020. The collected data were stored in a MySQL database to facilitate manual analysis and converted to text format. The data were manually labeled using a three-step …

The Locational Structure Of Amman City Hotels, Naseem Barham, Areen Almaani
An-Najah University Journal for Research - B (Humanities)
This study aimed at applying Ashwort (1989) model which reflects the relation between urban development and hotel location structure in a few cities, and the impact of transportation, the central market of the city, the cultural as well as natural features in a given city on Amman’s hotel locations and their development in the last 100 years using the evolutionary approach and by application of Geographical Information System (GIS). The results are partially consistent with the mentioned model. In this regard, the image of the new neighborhoods, the location of public and private establishments - such as universities, hospitals, and …

To Find A Seat: Tracing The Ideoscape Of Seats In The Pathars’ Lifeworld In Penang, Sanjeh Kumar Raman, Safial Aqbar Zakaria
To Find A Seat: Tracing The Ideoscape Of Seats In The Pathars’ Lifeworld In Penang, Sanjeh Kumar Raman, Safial Aqbar Zakaria
Interiority
This article examines the roles taken by seats in the buildings that form the lifeworld of Pathars—traditional Tamil goldsmiths—as an ideoscape following their migration to Penang during the British colonial period in the 19th century. This study used a phenomenological ethnography method to bring Pathars’ lived experiences with their physical environment to the forefront, highlighting the subjectiveness of architecture that shapes their lifeworld. The ideoscape of seats is analysed in themes to examine the power and politics of seats in the Pathars’ lifeworlds, including present-day migrant workers. To find a seat is a metaphor that elicits discussion on Pathars’ existential …

Estimates Of The Spatially Complete, Observational-Data-Driven Planetary Boundary Layer Height Over The Contiguous United States, Shiqi Tao, Zolal Ayazpour, Dan Li, Amy Jo Scarino, Ralph E. Kuehn, Kang Sun
Student Publications [Scholarly]
This study aims to generate a spatially complete planetary boundary layer height (PBLH) product over the contiguous United States (CONUS). An eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGB) regression model was developed using selected meteorological and geographical data fields as explanatory variables to fit the PBLH values derived from Aircraft Meteorological DAta Relay (AMDAR) reports hourly profiles at 13:00-14:00 LST (local solar time) during 2005-2019. A preprocessing step was implemented to exclude AMDAR data points that were unexplainable by the predictors, mostly under stable conditions. The PBLH prediction by this work as well as PBLHs from three reanalysis datasets (the fifth-generation European Centre …

Theory Follows Photography: The Evolving Gaze Of Denise Scott Brown, Pablo Meninato
Theory Follows Photography: The Evolving Gaze Of Denise Scott Brown, Pablo Meninato
Interiority
Throughout history, architects have communicated their ideas through writing, drawing, model-making, speculation, and built work. Photography, which appeared in architecture books at the beginning of the 20th century, was mostly considered to be ancillary to the written word. A recent exhibition of photographs by Denise Scott Brown at Tyler School of Art and Architecture in Philadelphia during summer 2021 demonstrates the possibility of another creative and intellectual path for the medium. Photography simultaneously serves as a precedent and catalyst for architectural and urban thinking and theory. This article aims to examine the relationship and continuity between Scott Brown's photographs and …

Interiority
This study aims to find and define interiority as an initiative to preserve culture and traditions in Sade Village, Lombok Island, a tourist area in Indonesia. This study adopted qualitative research with the case study method, recording several data sources through field observation, literature studies, archives, and in-depth interviews with community leaders. This study identifies the typology of areas that create psychological, form-based, atmospheric, and programmatic interiority (Teston, 2020) in various configurations. This study found the types of interiorities in Sade Village that contribute to the corridor’s uniqueness, visitors’ feeling of insideness, and the area’s maintenance. Book Review Rethinking The Jurisprudence Of Cyberspace, David Cowan
Book Review Rethinking The Jurisprudence Of Cyberspace, David Cowan
Canadian Journal of Law and Technology
It is a common claim that law is always catching up with technology. This is not entirely fair. The European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation1 (GDPR) could be viewed as a case of technology having to catch up to the law. That said, clearly there are challenges in law and in the legal profession, both in terms of how the law can adapt to changes in the digital world and the disruption of the legal profession. On the former point, there are perhaps three broad schools of thought: existing law is sufficient for adapting to new technological challenges, as it …

A Non-Reference Evaluation Of Underwater Image Enhancement Methods Using A New Underwater Image Dataset, Ashraf Saleem, Sidike Paheding, Nathir Rawashdeh, Ali Awad, Navjot Kaur
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
The rise of vision-based environmental, marine, and oceanic exploration research highlights the need for supporting underwater image enhancement techniques to help mitigate water effects on images such as blurriness, low color contrast, and poor quality. This paper presents an evaluation of common underwater image enhancement techniques using a new underwater image dataset. The collected dataset is comprised of 100 images of aquatic plants taken at a shallow depth of up to three meters from three different locations in the Great Lake Superior, USA, via a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) equipped with a high-definition RGB camera. In particular, we use our …

Nebraska State Constitution
Because Nebraska’s constitutional provision for direct democracy involves voting and the exercise of the People’s legislative authority, it is subject to the principles of Reynolds v. Sims and the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. This understanding of the People’s power of initiative and referendum as legislative is supported by Nebraska history, as is the severability of the two-fifths, county-distribution requirement from Article III, § 2 of the Nebraska Constitution. The county-distribution requirement fails the one-person-one-vote constraint placed upon States by the federal constitution. As a matter of statistical analysis, that requirement gives more power to voters in counties with …

Toward An Afrofuturist Landscape: A Refutation Of The Deceptive Aesthetics Of Spatial Violence In Wynberg, Cape Town, Benjamin Perry Levy
Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities
Statement of Purpose: This essay represents a continuation of work that I was fortunate enough to be able to begin while I was studying abroad at the University of Cape Town in South Africa during the spring 2022 semester. Beyond this, however, this paper represents an exploratory dive into the spatial humanities, particularly with regard to architecture, history, and landscape–an interest of mine that has developed (and which I hope to pursue more [in/ex]tensively in my graduate studies) as I have had the opportunity to learn from Professor Walter Greason, one of my mentors here at Macalester College. Throughout this …

Challenging Medical Authority: Autonomous Health Movement And Contemporary Harm Reduction Practices In Minneapolis, Louise D. Bequeaith
Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities
Statement of Purpose: Sometimes, I find it difficult to comprehend the vast problems and systems of inequity that exist within the United States’ (US) healthcare system. The US’s profit-driven model of health is so deeply integrated into our society that it feels impossible to change. It is hard to imagine an alternative. The COVID-19 pandemic has created an environment where the health of our communities is brought to the forefront. It is a moment when as a society we are beginning to understand that health crises are not a sum of individual failures, but instead are systematically produced and reproduced …
