Important Role Of Precipitation In Controlling A More Uniform Spring Phenology In The Qinba Mountains, China, Jianhao Li, Jingyun Guan, Wangqiang Han, Ruikang Tian, Binbin Lu, Danlin Yu, Jianghua Zheng

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Under global warming, the gradual pattern of spring phenology along elevation gradients (EG) has significantly changed. However, current knowledge on the phenomenon of a more uniform spring phenology is mainly focused on the effect of temperature and neglected precipitation. This study aimed to determine whether a more uniform spring phenology occurs along EG in the Qinba Mountains (QB) and explore the effect of precipitation on this pattern. We used Savitzky-Golay (S-G) filtering to extract the start of season (SOS) of the forest from the MODIS Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) during 2001-2018 and determined the main drivers of the SOS patterns …

A 17-Year Time-Series Of Fungal Environmental Dna From A Coastal Marine Ecosystem Reveals Long-Term Seasonal-Scale And Inter-Annual Diversity Patterns, Nathan Chrismas, R Allen, Mj Allen, Kimberley Bird, Michael Cunliffe

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Changing patterns in diversity are a feature of many habitats, with seasonality a major driver of ecosystem structure and function. In coastal marine plankton-based ecosystems, seasonality has been established through long-term time-series of bacterioplankton and protists. Alongside these groups, fungi also inhabit coastal marine ecosystems. If and how marine fungi show long-term intra- and inter-annual diversity patterns is unknown, preventing a comprehensive understanding of marine fungal ecology. Here, we use a 17-year environmental DNA time-series from the English Channel to determine long-term marine fungal diversity patterns. We show that fungal community structure progresses at seasonal and monthly scales and is …

Pathology Research and Scholarship

BACKGROUND: Estimating the economic costs of self-injury mortality (SIM) can inform health planning and clinical and public health interventions, serve as a basis for their evaluation, and provide the foundation for broadly disseminating evidence-based policies and practices. SIM is operationalized as a composite of all registered suicides at any age, and 80% of drug overdose (intoxication) deaths medicolegally classified as 'accidents,' and 90% of corresponding undetermined (intent) deaths in the age group 15 years and older. It is the long-term practice of the United States (US) Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to subsume poisoning (drug and nondrug) deaths …

“Can A Snowman Have More Than Three Snowballs?” Conducting Project Studies With Young Deaf Children, Christi Batamula, Bobbie Jo Kite Herbold, Julie Mitchiner

Perspectives on Early Childhood Psychology and Education

This study explored conducting project studies with young deaf children in two American Sign Language (ASL) and English bilingual schools for deaf children. Project studies involve teachers’ facilitation of exploration on a topic that interests young children. In projects, children learn by doing, starting with questions based on children’s curiosity about a topic and finding answers to the questions through investigation, field trips, and play. Children then represent their understanding and ideas about the topic in various ways. This study used ethnographic methods by observing specific strategies that teachers used to facilitate deaf children’s learning in multiple early childhood classrooms. …

Glacial Lake Outburst Floods Threaten Millions Globally, Caroline Taylor, Tom R. Robinson, Stuart Dunning, Carr J Rachel, Matthew Westoby

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

AbstractGlacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) represent a major hazard and can result in significant loss of life. Globally, since 1990, the number and size of glacial lakes has grown rapidly along with downstream population, while socio-economic vulnerability has decreased. Nevertheless, contemporary exposure and vulnerability to GLOFs at the global scale has never been quantified. Here we show that 15 million people globally are exposed to impacts from potential GLOFs. Populations in High Mountains Asia (HMA) are the most exposed and on average live closest to glacial lakes with ~1 million people living within 10 km of a glacial lake. More …

Putin’S Ukraine Invasion: Turbocharging Sino-Russian Collaboration In Energy, Maritime Security, And Beyond?, Andrew S. Erickson, Gabriel B. Collins

Naval War College Review

Putin’s war of choice in Ukraine will continue to send shock waves across the shores of maritime Asia for years, with unfolding impacts on ecosystems inhabited by oil barrels, gas pipelines, submarine technologies, jet engines, and basing access, within a context of a China-Russia relationship characterized over the centuries by cycles of fear, temporary bonds, and renewed division.

The Euro-Russian Energy Divorce: How Ukraine And Climate Broke Ostpolitik, Emily J. Holland Feb 2023

The Euro-Russian Energy Divorce: How Ukraine And Climate Broke Ostpolitik, Emily J. Holland

Naval War College Review

Russia’s war in Ukraine is forcing a redrawing of global energy flows and a reevaluation of contemporary European security architecture. The war has pushed Europe into a brutal reckoning with its energy dependence on Russia, and European states’ turn toward cleaner energy technology and nuclear will diminish Russia’s place on the European continent, redirecting the latter’s attentions eastward.

Naval Considerations In The Russo-Ukrainian War, Seth Cropsey

Naval War College Review

Russia’s grand military strategy has a distinct maritime bent, the Ukrainian south coast is Russia’s most tangible strategic prize, and naval forces are crucial to holding it. Since the war’s beginning, Ukraine’s carefully planned strategy has applied stress to key elements of Russia’s maritime strategy, and Ukraine’s theory of victory is shaped by maritime considerations as thoroughly as Russia’s.

Teaching With Collective Resilience During Covid-19: Korean Teachers And Collaborative Professionalism, Minseok Yang, Yujin Oh, Sunbin Lim, Taeyeon Kim

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

This study applies system-focused resilience and collaborative professionalism to examine how teachers in Korea collectively developed resilience and transformed teaching during COVID-19. Using qualitative data from seven individual interviews and four focus groups, we found Korean teachers navigated complex challenges (rapidly changing policies, online teaching, exacerbated learning gaps, and excessive social pressure) and utilized contextual resources (collective autonomy and flexibility, solidity and solidarity, and collective responsibility) to develop strategies (collaborative inquiry, timely communication, and envisioning the future of schooling). The study extends teacher resilience toward more collective and communal, from the individual level, by linking resilience to collaborative systemic changes. …

Department of Paediatrics and Child Health

Background: With the high frequency of acute respiratory infections in children worldwide, particularly so in low-resource countries, the development of effective diagnostic support is crucial. While pulse oximetry has been found to be an acceptable method of hypoxemia detection, improving clinical decision making and efficient referral, many healthcare set ups in low- and middle-income countries have not been able to implement pulse oximetry into their practice.
Main body: A review of past pulse oximetry implementation attempts in low- and middle-income countries proposes the barriers and potential solutions for complete integration in the healthcare systems. The addition of pulse oximetry into …

An Anticolonial Dream Against The Disaffection And Dissonance: Teaching The (Other) International Law In India, Swati S. Parmar Feb 2023

An Anticolonial Dream Against The Disaffection And Dissonance: Teaching The (Other) International Law In India, Swati S. Parmar

Indonesian Journal of International Law

The States, self-defined as the civilised, clothed in the ‘refined’ urbane bourgeois created a modern cosmopolitan order at a civilizational scale. The remaining world was driven into a cultural subjection and classified by the ‘civilised’ into these fixated identities while their indigeneity and socio-cultural identity were marginalised. Projected itself as the cradle of intellect, Europe consciously crafted imperialism as a cultural reference for the rest of the world. The colonial encounters left imperial imprints on the peoples of these colonies, the consequences of which remain evident in the styles and pedagogies of teaching international law in the geographical South. Historical …

Deconstructing “The New Indian Woman”: An Analysis Of The Sleuth Heroines Of Indian English Women’S Detective Fiction, Somjeeta Pandey, Somdatta Bhattacharya Feb 2023

Deconstructing “The New Indian Woman”: An Analysis Of The Sleuth Heroines Of Indian English Women’S Detective Fiction, Somjeeta Pandey, Somdatta Bhattacharya

Journal of International Women's Studies

Feminist discourses on the “New Indian Woman” focus on the woman's body as a surface upon which modernity is inscribed. Sexual transgression has been the only lens through which the New Woman has been usually studied and analyzed until now, thus offering a superficial definition of modernity by women being defined only by the corporeal. This is problematic not only because it offers a reductionist view of modernity but also “constructs a boundary around the notion of modern womanhood that excludes woman whose bodily autonomy has been compromised, for example through sexual assault” (Daya, “Embodying Modernity” 97). This paper will …
