Clinically Applicable Sociolinguistic Assessment For Cognitive-Communication Disorders, Louise C. Keegan, Jerry K. Hoepner, Leanne Togher, Mary Kennedy Mar 2023

Clinically Applicable Sociolinguistic Assessment For Cognitive-Communication Disorders, Louise C. Keegan, Jerry K. Hoepner, Leanne Togher, Mary Kennedy

Communication Sciences and Disorders Faculty Articles and Research

Purpose:

The third International Cognitive-Communication Disorders Conference was held in early 2022, providing an opportunity for researchers and clinicians to discuss management of cognitive-communication disorders (CCDs). Presentations that addressed social discourse initiated broader conversations about implementing sociolinguistic methods in research and clinical contexts. Given the heterogeneity of CCDs and sociocultural contexts, a person-centered approach is needed. Sociolinguistic methods are inherently relevant and salient to the individual's communication context and partners. Sociolinguistic analyses provide information about language skills, cognitive-communication skills, and social cognition. The purpose of this article is to share a model of social communication and provide descriptions of current …

Internally Displaced Persons: Ordeals And Analyses Of The Possible Regimes Of Legal Protection Frameworks, Olawale Ogunmodimu Mar 2023

Internally Displaced Persons: Ordeals And Analyses Of The Possible Regimes Of Legal Protection Frameworks, Olawale Ogunmodimu

St. Mary's Law Journal

This present global community is complicated because of anxiety and uncertainty. It is thoroughly interconnected yet intricately partitioned. Pivotally, one could argue that the centrality to this global anxiety is identity and belonging. People want to identify with and belong to a political system, territory, and culture. It seems that there is a present world that mirrors the political emergence of the interwar period that had nationalism on the rise. There is hostility to non-citizens globally, whether as refugees, internally displaced peoples (IDPs), or immigrants seeking to join new political communities. This Article explains the difficulties that ensue from being …

Examining Librarians’ Rights In The Philippine Copyright Law: The Academic Law Librarians' Standpoint, Willian Sa Frias, Bryan Boy C. Cortez Mar 2023

Examining Librarians’ Rights In The Philippine Copyright Law: The Academic Law Librarians' Standpoint, Willian Sa Frias, Bryan Boy C. Cortez

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Academic law librarians have two primary responsibilities in the profession: to be faithful to the fundamental law of library science, and to be the frontrunners in implementing the law of the land. The Philippine copyright law tests the academic law librarians' purpose in accomplishing both responsibilities. In this pandemic, when most library services are on online modality, the academic law librarians’ duty of providing information the fastest way possible may slow down due to their obligation to abide by the copyright law. To avoid this scenario and provide recommendations when this happens, the researchers of this study examines the overall …

Coming And Going To Zion: Conceptualizing Emigrant Motives Of British Latter-Day Saints, 1840-60, Samuel Benson Mar 2023

Coming And Going To Zion: Conceptualizing Emigrant Motives Of British Latter-Day Saints, 1840-60, Samuel Benson

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis examines the push- and pull-factors that caused Latter-day Saint converts to emigrate from the U.K. between 1840 and 1860. A close reading of firsthand accounts written by 50 emigrants suggests that temporal and spiritual motives are deeply intertwined in the minds of early Mormon emigrants, and distinguishing between the nature of these factors is difficult. Several patterns emerge in the study of these accounts: first, economic factors were intertwined with millenarian belief; second, the allure of charismatic authority (prophets) or communication with God was influential; third, the doctrine of “gathering” was central to their decision-making, though the focus …

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Risks associated with dust hazards are often underappreciated, a gap between the knowledge pool and public awareness that can be costly for impacted communities. This study reviews the emission sources and chemical, physical, and biological characteristics of airborne soil particles (dust) and their effects on human and environmental health and safety in the Pan-American region. American dust originates from both local sources (western United States, northern Mexico, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina) and long-range transport from Africa and Asia. Dust properties, as well as the trends and interactions with criteria air pollutants, are summarized. Human exposure to dust is associated …

A Grounded Theory For The Dissatisfaction Of Asynchronous Online Education Among Community College Students, Scott Sandok Mar 2023

A Grounded Theory For The Dissatisfaction Of Asynchronous Online Education Among Community College Students, Scott Sandok

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

As higher education institutions face the pressures of decreasing enrollment, online education is experiencing significant growth. Students are attracted to asynchronous online courses’ flexibility but often have inconsistent experiences. Previous research focused on drivers of satisfaction for online learning; this study concentrated on identifying the drivers of dissatisfaction for asynchronous online delivery among community college students. This study utilized a survey and semi-structured interviews to generate a grounded theory answer to the drivers of dissatisfaction. A survey based on Moore’s Transactional Distance Theory model broadly identified the areas of most significant concern for students with experience with asynchronous online courses. …

Making Room For The Past In The Future: Managing Urban Development With Cultural Heritage Preservation, Kubra Guzin Babaturk Mar 2023

Making Room For The Past In The Future: Managing Urban Development With Cultural Heritage Preservation, Kubra Guzin Babaturk

Sustainable Development Law & Policy

Few would disagree that art and architecture are indispensable aspects of the collective human experiences. But can there be “too much” of it? How much is “too much?” Could art and cultural heritage be a hindrance to progress, urbanization, and sustainability? Which art is worth saving? A growing question is how to balance and reconcile expanding urban needs with efforts to preserve cultural heritage. Many cities across the global face this fresh moral dilemma. Cities like Istanbul, Rome, and Cairo––heirs to great empires, with history and art cursing through every alley, are still modern-day metropolises, with ever-burgeoning populations and social …

Left-Behind Bangladeshi Wives Of Muslim Male Migrants In New York: A Critique Of Vivek Bald’S Bengali Harlem And The Lost Histories Of South Asian America, Prerana Das Mar 2023

Left-Behind Bangladeshi Wives Of Muslim Male Migrants In New York: A Critique Of Vivek Bald’S Bengali Harlem And The Lost Histories Of South Asian America, Prerana Das

Journal of International Women's Studies

Vivek Bald wrote Bengali Harlem and the Lost Histories of South Asian America to trace the untold story of Muslim Bengali men’s migration from British colonial Bengal throughout the 19th and 20th centuries and integration into the U.S. during the Asian exclusion era. This book review deconstructs gaps around Muslim women’s representation within Bengali Harlem through three analytical frameworks: self-orientalization and differential assimilation; masculinities and transnational migration; and the biopolitics of the racialized female body. This review aims to question how patriarchal constructions of Muslim masculinity impact men’s decisions to migrate and establish communities in New York. It explores how …

The Case For Working With Feminist New Materialisms Against The Dualisms That Divide Us, Ștefania Chihaia Mar 2023

The Case For Working With Feminist New Materialisms Against The Dualisms That Divide Us, Ștefania Chihaia

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper provides a theoretical overview of dualisms which lie at the foundation of Western thought in an attempt to highlight the fundamental contribution that feminist new materialisms bring to sociological theory and practice and beyond. To delineate the oppressive patterns of thought generated by anthropocentric dualistic thinking, I will draw on the influential works of ecofeminist Val Plumwood, science studies scholar and feminist Donna Haraway, and feminist theorist Karen Barad within the material turn. The exploration begins with an analysis of the Cartesian subject-object dichotomy rejected by post-humanists and new materialists, a dichotomy which spawns many others, and continues …

Ecofeminist Concerns And Subaltern Perspectives On ‘Third World’ Indigenous Women: A Study Of Selected Works Of Mahasweta Devi, Bholanath Das, Sahel Md Delabul Hossain Mar 2023

Ecofeminist Concerns And Subaltern Perspectives On ‘Third World’ Indigenous Women: A Study Of Selected Works Of Mahasweta Devi, Bholanath Das, Sahel Md Delabul Hossain

Journal of International Women's Studies

The lives of Aboriginals, as an indigenous form of a subaltern identity, have been less documented in narratives so far. Indigenous subaltern identity forms an alter-identity in which indigenous women’s identity is even more silenced in the social order of gender hierarchy. Maria Mies and Vandana Shiva in their book Ecofeminism locate the “Third World Woman” (in India) as a stakeholder of indigenous identity. The knowledge of Third World women in nurturing biodiversity drastically differs from both the Androcentric and Eurocentric models of bio-conservation. Indigenous women and the indigenous flora are both objects of genocidal violence, identity dissolution, and cultural …

Rangeland As A Common Property Resource: Contrasting Insights From Communal Areas Of Central Eastern Cape Province, South Africa, J. E. Bennett, H. R. Barrett Mar 2023

Rangeland As A Common Property Resource: Contrasting Insights From Communal Areas Of Central Eastern Cape Province, South Africa, J. E. Bennett, H. R. Barrett

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

In communal areas of South Africa, grazing systems are held under a variety of different common property regimes. However, the social and ecological realities of these communal grazing systems remain poorly understood, particularly with regard to the use of land allocated for crop production. Little is known about how these arable areas are utilised as a common grazing resource but the wide array of tenure arrangements under which they are held suggests that they facilitate some interesting departures from recognised common property systems. A clearer understanding of how common property regimes function at an integrated level in South Africa will …

Optimization Of The Pasture Resource In Boundary Environments As A Basis For Regional Nature Management, M. V. Rogova Mar 2023

Optimization Of The Pasture Resource In Boundary Environments As A Basis For Regional Nature Management, M. V. Rogova

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

In spite of the globalization processes encompassing all spheres of human life and activity, land remains the main resource and provides the feeding source for population and the fodder base for livestock rearing. On the other hand, the activity of local communities can have important global consequences. The study area that includes Lake Baikal’s western shore (East Siberia) and the lake’s largest island exemplifies the traditional type of nature management, namely, grazing management which was originated by an indigenous population within the context of suitable natural climatic conditions. This investigation furnished an opportunity to make an assessment of the status …

A Pen, A Pencil, or a Keyboard: Online Writing Center Tutors’ Perceptions

Author, Adjunct Faculty, Grand Canyon University

Abstract

Writing can be challenging for some students, even those who have graduated high school and are moving forward to higher learning. Thus, an idea about students and writing support led to a study about writing centers and the individuals responsible for supporting struggling writers. This qualitative case study explored the tutors’ perceptions of online writing tutoring and investigated how tutors perceive their work using both asynchronous and synchronous online tutoring modes at a 4-year university. Though the writing center participating in …

Underrepresentation Of Minority Students In Higher Level High School Classes In The Low Country Of South Carolina: A Case Study, Lori Thomas Mar 2023

Underrepresentation Of Minority Students In Higher Level High School Classes In The Low Country Of South Carolina: A Case Study, Lori Thomas

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this qualitative multiple-case study is to explore the process and the experiences of teachers in recommending minority students for advanced placement (AP) and honors-level high school classes. The theory guiding this study was the invitational theory introduced by Purkey (1978). The invitational theory focuses on the phenomenon that learning is enhanced when people are encouraged to participate or invited into an educational experience. This case study was set in three high schools in a suburban school district in the Low Country of South Carolina and explored the experiences of 12 teachers with the recommendation process. Data collection …
