Undergraduate Student Nurses’ Attitude Toward Mental Health Education: A Cross-Sectional Analysis, Abdulellah Modhi Alsolais, Benito Jr Nillo Areola, Amal Alfouzan, Marie Grace Mejia Nones, Talal Ali Alharbi
Makara Journal of Health Research
Background: Reportedly, there has been a long-standing nursing shortage in Saudi Arabia. This study explored the attitudes of undergraduate student nurses considering them to be a factor contributing to this shortage. This study also investigated the association among gender, hospital exposures, and campus enrollment concerning mental health education.
Methods: Quantitative correlational analysis was used on 124 student nurses in mental health nursing. Using Point Binary, Spearman's rank and one-way ANOVA, significant determinants were correlated to the domains of mental health nursing.
Results: Student nurses have a positive attitude toward mental health education. Gender is significantly related to …

The Creation Of Political Survival Strategies By Black Collegiate Women On Virginia’S Predominantly White Campuses, Maya Jenkins
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
The University of Mary Washington is a liberal arts institution founded in 1908 as a normal and industrial school for women (Our History - About UMW, 2015). Because of its small size, Mary Washington was historically known as Virginia’s “undiscovered gem” (Boyer, 2011). Mary Washington is described as a place built to support the “innovative, passionate, intellectual, and genuine” (Boyer, 2011). However, in 2020, the deaths of Breonna Taylor and Tony McDade and a racial protest that took place near the college’s campus caused many Black collegiate women at Mary Washington to question if their university was built to support …
Dungeons & Dragons: Fractals Of The Human Self, Katie Anderson
Dungeons & Dragons: Fractals Of The Human Self, Katie Anderson
Honors Theses
Dungeons & Dragons at its core is roleplay based storytelling, which implies the idea that the game is a work of fiction. While the world of Iad and the Free States of Tarvan does not exist on planet earth, the experiences and emotions felt by the players and their characters within the world are very much real. Players use extensions of themselves, their characters, to interact with the world around them, forging relationships and new lines of fate and destiny. Characters are fractals of their out of game personas, attached to one’s base personality and expanding outwards. The development of …

Since the Internet era began, numerous earth science data services have been developed to facilitate data discovery (for example, data sources, documents, facts, visualization, opinions) and data access for research and application activities. For example, a large collection of NASA’s earth science data has been made searchable and freely downloadable over the Internet. Some value-added services even allow users to analyze and visualize many variables online (for example, 2,000+ in NASA Giovanni) without downloading data and software.
However, finding and discovering suitable datasets and information for interdisciplinary research (involving two or more scientific disciplines), applications, education, and other emerging activities …

"If anthropology doesn't break your heart, then you're not doing it right." - Ruth Behar Writing this thesis has been a trying experience. Within these pages, you will find the therapeutic expedition of a caramel-colored, Spanish-speaking, second-generation black Dominican woman from Newark, NJ who took advantage of this research opportunity to better understand the racial and ethnic parts of her identity which have caused her much turmoil and low self-esteem. Centering myself, my identity, and my story in this research and grappling with the complexities of the subject matter has been an exhausting yet liberating experience. I have contemplated many …

Narrowing The Achievement Gap By Increasing Student Opportunities In An Outdoor Project-Based Learning Environment, Britney Christensen
Narrowing The Achievement Gap By Increasing Student Opportunities In An Outdoor Project-Based Learning Environment, Britney Christensen
Masters Projects
The nation’s lack of student achievement on standardized tests is a result of the insufficient number of opportunities a student has to interact with their environment. Research indicates racial and economic disparities limit the number of chances these groups have to build the wide range of background knowledge needed to support the academic demands in the classroom. As a result, their performances show a widening of the achievement gap. Therefore, this project speaks to perspectives centered around constructivism as a way to explain how students acquire knowledge over time. The author contends that reading diverse texts, writing for different purposes, …

Understanding Groundwater Flow In A Saturated Buffer Zone ( Sbz ) Using Numerical Models: Case Study Of T 3 Site, Mclean County, Central Illinois, Nnaemeka Henry Nsude
Theses and Dissertations
Loss of nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorous, from agricultural lands in the Midwest affects farm productivity and environmental quality. Nutrient runoff from lands discharged into streams degrades the aquatic ecosystem through eutrophication and subsequent hypoxic conditions. The presence of nitrogen also threatens the potability of numerous aquifer bodies globally due to their high solubility in water. To tackle this problem, best management practices such as Saturated Buffer Zone (SBZ) are implemented to reduce nitrogen from nitrate-laden tile water from agricultural lands before being discharged into streams. Groundwater flow and interactions at SBZ are not well understood. To aid the …

Impact Of Rural Financial Institutions Building Program (Rufin) On The Productivity Of Women-Owned Farms And Non-Farm Enterprises In Northern Nigeria, Ayodele Abiodun Olaleye, Abigail John Jirgi, Kpotun Mohammed Baba, Usman Shabba Mohammed
Journal of International Women's Studies
This study was undertaken to determine the impact of the Rural Financial Institution Building Program (RUFIN) on the productivity of women-owned farms and non-farm enterprises in Northern Nigeria. The study utilized primary data collected through a questionnaire administered to 390 beneficiaries and an equal number of non-beneficiaries selected through a multi-stage sampling procedure. The productivity of women-owned enterprises was determined using Total Factor Productivity (TFP), which was measured as a ratio of the total annual output of the enterprise to the product of capital input, labor input, and total material input. The propensity score matching approach was used to analyze …

Globalization And Migration: The Great Gender Equalizer?, Akm Ahsan Ullah, Sharifah Nurul Huda Alkaff, Shirley Chin Wei Lee, Diotima Chattoraj, Jannatul Ferdous
Journal of International Women's Studies
Globalization has been extensively debated in a range of contexts, from trade to borders, international relations, and conflict. It appears to be a positive force for women as many scholars contend that it has offered women new opportunities, thus enhancing greater gender equality in many countries where traditional patriarchal structures are firmly entrenched. However, some scholars are more skeptical of the benefits of globalization for women. They note that despite women gaining an increasing share of employment opportunities in a globalized world, the expected redistribution of domestic, household, and childcare responsibilities often did not materialize. They also argue that multinational …

Zoning By A Thousand Cuts, Sara C. Bronin
Zoning By A Thousand Cuts, Sara C. Bronin
Pepperdine Law Review
Zoning is increasingly viewed as a constraint on the nation’s housing supply, and as zoning enters its second century, there is a strong drumbeat for reform. Across the country, reformers have targeted the elimination of single-family zoning, pointing to research showing that single-family zoning drives up development costs, degrades the environment, and homogenizes communities. While allowing more multi-family options could help address these issues, reformers should not exclusively focus on the elimination of single-family zoning. Process requirements including mandatory public hearings, and substantive requirements involving lot configuration, building size, and occupancy, among other things, play a significant role in determining …

Frontline Insights On Climate Resilience And Adaptations In Sids, Jervon Sands
Environmental Studies Student Work
Climate resilience and adaptation in Small Island Developing States (SIDS) have been global models since the earliest signals of the climate emergency yet the tools needed for SIDS to overcome this growing crisis have not been sufficiently provided. This deficiency is a common problem among SIDS which is becoming more severe in proportion to the climate crisis. According to the report Climate Change 2022: Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability, launched by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC): “Small islands present the most urgent need for investment in capacity building and adaptation strategies (high confidence) but face barriers and constraints which …

Mixed Speak: Towards A Re-Poetics Of Race And Self, Celina Mizuki Ohga Samuelson
Media and Cultural Studies Honors Projects
This paper tells the stories of mixed-race Japanese people. I engage in a re-poetics, positing storytelling as an essential tool into complicating our understandings of race and self. I examine the relationship between language and race, exploring how subjects existing within a space of mixedness navigate identity-formation and racial belonging. Operating under a socio-constructivist lens, I begin with a brief re-telling of the history of race in Japan, re-framing mythologies of race throughout literature, legislation, and into national and colonial projects. While popular discourse alleges Japan was and is a country of racial homogeneity, I argue that this falsifies colonial …

In the Age of the Enlightenment, women of nobility in Spain began to gain some authority to contribute to society. The tertulia provided women with a path into the political and social climate of Spain. This research examines the role of women in tertulias, specifically exploring primary documents from the Academia del Buen Gusto and analyzing them for their depiction of Enlightenment ideals and women. This research also examines the life and work of the Marquesa de Fuerte- Híjar, a woman who played many roles throughout her life, from an orphan and wife to a tertulia owner and president of …

A Call For Planetary Kinship: The Development Of New Forms Of Subjectivity In Jeff Vandermeer's Annihilation, Jennifer Kinne
Masters Theses
This thesis joins a vibrant conversation on the importance of storytelling in an age of climate change through an analysis of Jeff VanderMeer’s Annihilation, a strange and prophetic novel whose environments and characters are confronted with significant ecological devastation and transformation. It explores the ways in which VanderMeer opens liminal spaces between the human and nonhuman through his usage of the New Weird genre, uncanny and abcanny imagery, and monstrous characters.
In my first chapter, I will explore the emerging world of New Weird fiction and argue that this genre is uniquely suited to addressing climate change, namely because of …

How Art Interpretation Preserves Memory: The Significance Of Historic Responses To A Sunday Afternoon On The Island Of La Grande Jatte (1884), Olivia Tambrini
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
This paper discusses how art interpretation preserves memory by reflecting upon several different interpretations of A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte (1884) by George Seurat. Throughout history, audiences have interpreted La Grande Jatte’s message and preserved its significance in their own way. Still, each memory has centered around and brought forth a feeling of harmony. This paper argues that the timeless, compelling nature and legacy of Seurat’s masterpiece demonstrates a powerful characteristic of our memories—their ability to simultaneously shift, change, and even contrast while still holding the innate emotion and significance embedded in our remembrances. These …

Global Water Level Variability Observed After The Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’Apai Volcanic Tsunami Of 2022, Adam Thomas Devlin, David A. Jay, Stefan Talke, Jiayi Pan
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
The eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcano on 15 January 2022 provided a rare opportunity to understand global tsunami impacts of explosive volcanism and to evaluate future hazards, including dangers from “volcanic meteotsunamis” (VMTs) induced by the atmospheric shock waves that followed the eruption. The propagation of the volcanic and marine tsunamis was analyzed using globally distributed 1 min measurements of air pressure and water level (WL) (from both tide gauges and deep-water buoys). The marine tsunami propagated primarily throughout the Pacific, reaching nearly 2 m at some locations, though most Pacific locations recorded maximums lower than 1 m. …

Ecoracism And Antiracism In The Environmental Justice Movement And Their Place In Literature, Jill Amari
Ecoracism And Antiracism In The Environmental Justice Movement And Their Place In Literature, Jill Amari
Academic Festival
The term “ecoracism” has recently entered the fields of environmental activism, ecocriticism, and Critical Race Theory, though not much research on ecoracism has yet been done in the latter two fields. Antiracism, another modern concept, refers to the acknowledgment of racism and the promotion of racial equality. This paper explores how ecoracism and antiracism are important within the environmental justice movement, just as they are significant in literature. But how can looking at nature literature through an ecoracist and antiracist lens help future studies of these subjects, as well as future environmental and literary scholars? Scholars, like activists, have a …

Food insecurity is a complex, multifaceted issue that affects millions and millions of people across the globe. It is an overwhelming issue with many different direct and indirect causes that are associated with increasing the likelihood that an individual or household may experience food insecurity at some point in their life. Food insecurity in America is most heavily influenced by poverty and other social determinants of health, and it has seriously adverse effects on the health outcomes of those who experience it. Although there are effective programs in place to work towards alleviating the issue of food insecurity, it is …
