Teaching Beyond ‘Kings Leopold’S Ghost’: New Sources And Voices In A Global History Curriculum On The Democratic Republic, Jen Chapin Jun 2023

Teaching Beyond ‘Kings Leopold’S Ghost’: New Sources And Voices In A Global History Curriculum On The Democratic Republic, Jen Chapin

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The complicated history of the Democratic Republic of Congo is not typically part of high school curricula, yet events and historical trends concerning this nation connect with many key topics and themes, including feudalism, Haitian Revolution, New Imperialism, genocide, World War I & 2, Decolonization movements, Cold War politics, neo-colonialism/globalization, modern China’s economic power, authoritarianism, cult of personality, grassroots democracy movements, responses to climate change, etc. Designing and delivering a rigorous yet accessible curriculum on Congo poses a challenge for teaching beyond “King Leopold’s Ghost”, meaning, working past the prevalence of materials focusing on Belgian king’s genocidal two-decade rule over …

Improving South Dakota Parents’ Knowledge Of Congenital Cytomegalovirus, Hannah M. Williams, Jessica Messersmith, Jacynda Gellhaus

Journal of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention

Introduction: Congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) is the most common infectious condition present at birth and the leading non-genetic cause of sensorineural hearing loss in children. Despite CMV being common and preventable, knowledge of CMV remains low among individuals in the United States (Doutre et al., 2016). Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is also common among infants in the United States, but unlike cCMV, several studies have researched which educational methods have been most effective for improving parents’ knowledge of safe sleep practices. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether educational methods shown to be most effective for improving parents’ …

Attitudes Of Counselors Toward Collaboration With Healthcare Professionals, Rashunda Miller Reed, Theodore P. Remley Jr., Lillian M. Range May 2023

Attitudes Of Counselors Toward Collaboration With Healthcare Professionals, Rashunda Miller Reed, Theodore P. Remley Jr., Lillian M. Range

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

Counselors are experts in handling mental health issues, however many mental health issues are reported to primary care providers. Collaboration between counselors and healthcare providers is increasing yet little is known about counselors’ attitudes toward this challenging practice. In this study 165 counselors completed surveys related to their attitudes and social anxiety levels toward interacting with healthcare professionals. Counselors in this study reported having slightly negative attitudes toward healthcare professionals. There was no significant relationship between attitudes and social anxiety. Social anxiety was inversely related to frequency of collaboration, however, only a few counselors reported social anxiety. More importantly, most …

The Scope Of The Prison Mailbox Rule, Caitlyn B. Switzer May 2023

The Scope Of The Prison Mailbox Rule, Caitlyn B. Switzer

Liberty University Law Review

Federal courts are filled with situations where an inmate might rely on the prison mail system to mail a document to the court. However, the prison mail system is notoriously unreliable. The prison mailbox rule was formed to provide a fair opportunity for inmates to personally mail a filing to the court before the expiration of the legally permitted time to file.

Federal Rule of Appellate Procedure 4(c) codifies the prison mailbox rule. It provides that an inmate’s appeal is considered filed with the clerk when the inmate delivers the filing to prison mail authorities. Prior to the Supreme Court’s …

The Spatial Patterns Of Deforestation In The Ko'mara Forest Area, Leny Rachmawati, Samuel A. Paembonan, Syamsu Rijal, Munajat Nursaputra, Andang Suryana Soma, Syamsuddin Millang, A. Mujetahid

Jurnal Penelitian Kehutanan Wallacea

Land-use changes result from changes in the human population, their activities, and social and environmental activities, which occur in a complex and dynamic manner. The change of forested areas to non-forested areas, also known as deforestation, is a land-use change. Deforestation influences land cover by creating a specific distribution pattern (fragmentation). Almost the entire forest has been fragmented into smaller areas, but the pattern of each of these forest areas is uncertain. As a consequence, it would be more challenging to control potential deforestation. Using the spatial metrics of Clumpiness index, Contiguity index, and Patch density, deforestation in one of …

Marginal To Whom? Reflections On Gow’S "Purús Song", Magnus Course May 2023

Marginal To Whom? Reflections On Gow’S "Purús Song", Magnus Course

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

This paper constitutes a personal exploration of the impact of the work of Peter Gow on my own attempts to think through specific ethnographic problems, both in the Mapuche communities of Southern Chile and the Gaelic communities of Western Scotland. I focus in particular on how Gow’s lesser-known essay “Purús Song” inverts received wisdom about the relationships between center and periphery, and between nation-state and Indigenous people. I see this as one iteration of Gow’s broader aim of letting ethnographic realities transform theoretical complacencies.

Indigenous Transformations In The Comunidad Nativa: Rethinking Kinship And Its Limitations In An Expanding Resource Frontier, Evan Killick, Juan Pablo Sarmiento Barletti May 2023

Indigenous Transformations In The Comunidad Nativa: Rethinking Kinship And Its Limitations In An Expanding Resource Frontier, Evan Killick, Juan Pablo Sarmiento Barletti

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

In Of Mixed Blood, Peter Gow sets out an account of the transformations of kinship and the construction of social relations among Indigenous, mainly Yine (Piro), people of the Bajo Urubamba valley in the early 1980s, when Peru’s “Comunidades Nativas” (“Native Communities”) were receiving their new official titles. We revisit Peter’s proposition by comparing it our more recent ethnographic engagements with Indigenous Asháninka/Ashéninka communities in the region. While tracing continuities from his observations, we also show how social relations now play out in different ways, as certain important resources have become scarcer and the need for …

Heating Up At The Plate: Relationships Between Temperature, Climate Type In Place Of Birth, And Mlb Batting Performance, Nathan M. Hitchens, Reuben J. Allen May 2023

Heating Up At The Plate: Relationships Between Temperature, Climate Type In Place Of Birth, And Mlb Batting Performance, Nathan M. Hitchens, Reuben J. Allen

The Geographical Bulletin

This study seeks to determine whether long-term heat acclimatization affects batting performance of Major League Baseball players based upon the climate in which a player was born. Each player with at least one at-bat from 1980–2018 was linked to a climate class and subdivision based on the Köppen-Geiger climate classification of their place of birth, and the ambient temperature at game time was determined for each game that took place. Games played in temperatures at least one standard deviation below and above the mean were categorized as cold- and hot-weather games, respectively. Common baseball metrics such as batting average, slugging …

Spatial Patterns Of Micromobility Ridership: A Multi-City Analysis, Mohammad Anwar Alattar, Mark Beecroft

The Geographical Bulletin

Lightweight, electricity-powered vehicles such as electric bicycles and scooters, known as micromobility, are expanding rapidly in urban areas worldwide. Micromobility holds a promising potential in improving transportation by a number of means, including filling public transportation gaps and reducing dependence upon the private car and thereby internal combustion engine emissions. As a result of the proliferation of micromobility sharing schemes around the world, ridership trajectories can be obtained. Through Ridereport (https://www.ridereport.com), datasets have been acquired from several cities (Santa Monica, California, USA; San Francisco, California, USA; Portland, Oregon, USA; Austin, Texas, USA; Auckland, New Zealand; and Melbourne, Victoria, Australia), this …

Sean Gotcher, a real estate agent for 11 years, went viral on TikTok with a real estate hypothetical.1 Gotcher asked how weird society would be if a billion-dollar company collected data on what people would be willing to pay for housing by zip code and then use that information to buy under the market-rate in order to sell above the market rate.2 He wondered how weird it would be if this company bought 31 homes in a two-mile radius to sell for a profit of $1.2 million within a year.3 Zillow inspired this scenario. 4 After Gotcher’s TikTok video received …

Civilized Elders And Isolated Ancestors: The Multiple Histories Of Contemporary Amazonia, Casey High May 2023

Civilized Elders And Isolated Ancestors: The Multiple Histories Of Contemporary Amazonia, Casey High

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

In this article I consider the impact of Peter Gow’s writing on indigenous histories as a key area of research on Amazonia. Building on his study of kinship as history on the Bajo Urubamba (1991) he presented a regional perspective on the dynamic social categories by which Amazonian people understand their relations with various “others.” Focusing on indigenous agency and modes of thought, Gow challenged certain lines of historical thinking that dominated anthropology at the time. I explore how his ethnographic approach to history has influenced a generation of regional scholarship, including my own work on memory and social transformation …

Desire, Difference, And Productivity: Reflections On “The Perverse Child” And Its Continued Relevance, Christopher Hewlett May 2023

Desire, Difference, And Productivity: Reflections On “The Perverse Child” And Its Continued Relevance, Christopher Hewlett

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

This article is concerned with the relationships through which children have been born, raised, and made into Amahuaca people over the past 75 years, and within contemporary Native Communities on the Inuya River since their formation beginning in the 1980s. The process of making children into kin among Amahuaca people is similar to that described throughout much of lowland South America. The production, preparation, and sharing of proper food (manioc, plantains, fish, and game) as well as manioc beer are central aspects of sociality and the formation of specific kinds of bodies. While the processes of sharing substances, demonstrating care, …

The Impact Of Russia-Ukraine War On Energy Policy Maneuvers To Strengthen Energy Security And Cybersecurity In Indonesia, Bobby Adhityo Rizaldi, Abdi Manab Idris, Nurbaiti Nurbaiti May 2023

The Impact Of Russia-Ukraine War On Energy Policy Maneuvers To Strengthen Energy Security And Cybersecurity In Indonesia, Bobby Adhityo Rizaldi, Abdi Manab Idris, Nurbaiti Nurbaiti

Journal of Terrorism Studies

The war between Russia and Ukraine is highly discussed in global geopolitics and geostrategy. The strategy of attacking Russia directly at the point of a vital national object, namely the power plant, which was preceded by a cyber attack at the Nuclear Power Plant in Chornobyl, followed by a conventional physical attack from the air, resulted in an energy crisis in Ukraine. The resulting war affects many sectors, such as the energy sector, food, and supply chains, especially (at the end of 2021) before the war. WTI oil price was only around 75$/barrel, but when the war broke out, the …

The White Supremacist Structure Ofamerican Zoning Law, Sarah J. Adams-Schoen May 2023

The White Supremacist Structure Ofamerican Zoning Law, Sarah J. Adams-Schoen

Brooklyn Law Review

This article disrupts the false narrative of white supremacism that has, for more than a century, cast American land use law as race neutral. In doing so, this article builds on an important but underdeveloped body of legal scholarship elucidating zoning law’s role in creating and perpetuating a separate and unequal dual housing system. It provides primary historical evidence and a clear narrative demonstrating that the defining feature of American zoning law—a strict residential use taxonomy that privileges neighborhoods of restrictively regulated single-family homes and burdens less restrictively regulated residential areas—emerged directly from the facially race-based and facially neutral, but …

Between Cocama And Modernity In The Ucamara (Peruvian Amazon), Marta Krokoszyńska May 2023

Between Cocama And Modernity In The Ucamara (Peruvian Amazon), Marta Krokoszyńska

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

Combining a contemporary ethnographic perspective with a review of historical records, the article extends Peter Gow’s re-reading of the ex-Cocama phenomenon in the Western Amazon. It argues that the foundation of the Amazonian Peruvian town of Requena at the beginning of the 20th century took place during an important historical moment in the region. Within the post-rubber boom context, schools became a particularly important idiom that enabled Requena’s growth as the centre of education and modernity. The paper investigates relations between the widespread desire for education in the Ucamara region, and Cocama descendants’ and other “ribereño” ex-Mainas peoples’ specific notions …

Neutrosophic Mcdm Methodology For Risk Assessment Of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles, Shimaa S. Mohamed, Ahmed Abdel-Monem, Alshaimaa A. Tantawy May 2023

Neutrosophic Mcdm Methodology For Risk Assessment Of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles, Shimaa S. Mohamed, Ahmed Abdel-Monem, Alshaimaa A. Tantawy

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications

Due to its usefulness in several industries and the military, researchers have concentrated on developing autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). However, AUV navigation continues to be a difficult challenge to solve owing to the variety of underwater settings. The usage of AUVs, or autonomous underwater vehicles, is not without dangers like malfunction, ecological risks, loss of communications, cybersecurity risks, collisions, and others. There are many criteria to assess these risks technical, operational, economic, and regulatory. So, the methods of multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) is used to deal with these various criteria. The analytical hierarchy process (AHP) method is an MCDM methodology, that …

A Seasonal Wind Climatology Of The Great Lakes Region Of The United States: 1990-2019, Anna Allen, Michael A. Davis May 2023

A Seasonal Wind Climatology Of The Great Lakes Region Of The United States: 1990-2019, Anna Allen, Michael A. Davis

The Geographical Bulletin

The Great Lakes region has been the subject of numerous climate related research studies. The seasonal wind and circulation patterns are critical to understanding how weather patterns propagate as well as for potential wind energy generation. Furthermore, wind is a critical component in weather forecasting; thus, additional information on atmospheric circulation tendencies in this area can lead to improvements in weather forecasting. By utilizing monthly average wind speed data from 46 Great Lakes stations, augmented with NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data (Kalnay, et al. 1996; Kistler, et al. 2001), the seasonal differences in wind speeds throughout the region can be analyzed. To …

Impacts And Perceptions Of Climate Variability On Shea (Vitellaria Paradoxa) And African Locust Bean (Parkia Biglobosa) In Burkina Faso, Joseph Yaméogo, Isidore Pawendkisgou Yanogo

The Geographical Bulletin

This article examines manifestations of climate variability and its impacts on tree species (shea, African locust bean) in agricultural fields through an analysis of the opinion of the field managers. The Likert-type survey form was prepared for this purpose for the collection of primary data in the field. A sample of 110 households out of a total of 480 was selected, and secondary data (rainfall, temperature and wind) were also collected through Burkina Faso’s national meteorological agency. Descriptive statistics were used to analyse the primary data collected. The study revealed that 90% of agroforestry parkland managers perceive climate variability through …

Towards Urban Biodiversity: Simulating Design Parameters For Wildlife-Inclusive Green Infrastrcuture, Alisa Abdulghany, Baher Farahat

BAU Journal - Creative Sustainable Development

As of 2021, more than half of the global population resides in urban areas. This resulted in an overwhelming footprint affecting species habitat areas leading to biodiversity loss. By definition, urban biodiversity is the diversity of living things within the urban realm. By providing chances for habitat as part of new developments, preserving on-site habitats, and attempting to connect with the local ecosystems, we can help promote biodiversity. Green infrastructure (GI), which includes all semi-natural areas in the urban context, can serve as a vessel for biodiversity. Therefore, the problem can be defined by the urban footprint that expands on …

Revitalizing The Borderlines Through Architecture Of Green Networking - Case Study: Beirut, Lebanon, Karim Al-Khatib, Maged Youssef, Mona M. Salem

BAU Journal - Creative Sustainable Development

Borders are an essential part of cities and countries, and they can create both physical and cultural divides. Inner-city borders can lead to social isolation and inequality, which can contribute to tensions and conflicts. Borders around the world have become a symbol of conflict, racism, fear, inequity, and division. One single line could divide between opportunity and hope and poverty and oblivion. Accordingly, some borders create social isolation between various cultures in cities that increase socio-political problems and remove urban connectivity. Green networking involves using urban green spaces, such as parks and gardens, to connect different areas of a city …

Murphy And The Sixteenth Amendment In Relation To The Taxation Of Non-Excludable Personal Injury Awards, Joseph M. Dodge May 2023

Murphy And The Sixteenth Amendment In Relation To The Taxation Of Non-Excludable Personal Injury Awards, Joseph M. Dodge

Florida Tax Review

A recent panel decision of the U. S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, Murphy v. Internal Revenue Service, shocked the tax community by holding that Internal Revenue Code section 104(a)(2) was unconstitutional by failing to exclude from gross income revenue (damages for emotional distress and injury to professional reputation) that is not “income” under the Sixteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

A petition for rehearing en banc was filed, but, in a highly unusual move, the D.C. Circuit panel that decided the case, on its own motion, vacated its judgment and set the case for re-argument. …

Transoptic Landscape Analysis: Multidimensional Landscapes Of A Multinational Wales, Mark Rhodes May 2023

Transoptic Landscape Analysis: Multidimensional Landscapes Of A Multinational Wales, Mark Rhodes

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

In this article I propose a novel extension to landscape analysis through multidimensional understandings, including—yet reaching beyond—tangible and into more-than-representational understandings of landscape. This "transoptic" approach to landscape, breaking away from strictly searching for visual representations of culture, allows for sonic, experiential, and emotional layers of meaning embedded in landscapes to emerge from their plural cultural and historical contexts. Memory, and the production and experience of that memory in the landscape, benefit from this transoptic understanding. Utilizing memory work, which includes both memory production and consumption, in Wales as a case study, I employ a transoptic landscape analysis to approach …
