Examining The Digital Divide In Education During Covid-19 From Teachers’ Perspectives, Elife Ceviker, Tuba Gezer
Examining The Digital Divide In Education During Covid-19 From Teachers’ Perspectives, Elife Ceviker, Tuba Gezer
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
The outbreak of COVID-19 resulted in unprecedented school closures in education, leading online education to become “the new normal.” Concurrently, emergency online instruction further exacerbated what is known as the digital divide, one of the contributing factors to inequality of educational opportunities. The purpose of our research is to examine in what ways the digital divide influences teachers and students during COVID-19. A better understanding of teachers' perceptions of teaching online and the digital divide can offer more information for effective teaching during the pandemic. In this multi-method study, researchers collected data from 36 teachers through Likert scale questions …
Defining Gastrocriticism As A Critical Paradigm On The Example Of Irish Literature And Food Writing: A Vade Mecum, Anke Klitzing
Defining Gastrocriticism As A Critical Paradigm On The Example Of Irish Literature And Food Writing: A Vade Mecum, Anke Klitzing
Doctoral
The aim of this study is to map out the gastrocritical approach, using Irish literature and writing to test its premises, and to provide a vade mecum for its practical application, particularly for interdisciplinary scholars. The gastrocritical approach furnishes a “culinary lens” for reading food and foodways in imaginative texts, informed by work in the field of food studies and gastronomy. The approach was broadly characterised by Tobin in 2002, but only sparsely used since. The past fifteen years have seen an increasing self-awareness and reflexivity in the field of literary food studies. As the field matures, there have been …
Isolation And Characterization Of Nut Shell Proteins From Arachis Hypogea Linn. And Cocos Nucifera Linn. And Its Effect On Macrophage Activation To Treat Visceral Leishmaniasis, Suhatha S
Theses and Dissertations
Glycoproteins are among several immunomodulatory agents known to activate the innate immune system. Plant derived glycoproteins are a generous source of glycoproteins that could be utilized as cost effective preparations for therapeutics. Isolating glycoproteins from agricultural by- products with the intention to use them against Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) was the focus in this doctoral study. The two nut shells, Arachis hypogea L. (Groundnut) and Cocos nucifera L. (Coconut), were used for the isolation of glycoprotein used in the study. Crude glycoproteins from the A. hypogea L. (AHP-C) were isolated and fractioned. AHP-F2 was identified as 28.37 kDa Mannose/Glucose binding lectin …

Engaging Stakeholders To Achieve The Sdgs: The Case Of The Province Of Bataan, Sherilyn F. Valdecañas, Maria Assunta C. Cuyegkeng
Journal of Management for Global Sustainability
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (2030 ASD) was designed to address global problems like poverty, conservation of the planet, and peace and prosperity. Successfully pursuing it, however, will be highly dependent on how local and regional governments implement the agenda—the rapid realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) would involve various actors ranging from civil society organizations to the academe, the corporate sector, and many private individuals. This paper presents a case study on stakeholder engagement undertaken at the local level to achieve the SDGs, specifically in the Philippine province of Bataan. The selection of Bataan Province stems from …

Towards The Aim Of The Eu Circular Economy In A Multi-Stakeholder Process: From Policy To Industry And Back, Erja Kettunen
Journal of Management for Global Sustainability
This paper explores the negotiations and actions among various actors, or stakeholders, in formulating the aim of the EU circular economy. Taking the perspective of a member state and its industries, it focuses on how stakeholders—EU bodies, industry associations, companies, and the state—communicate and collaborate while having divergent interests. The research approach combines perspectives from business studies and international political economy to explore stakeholder engagement and bargaining in formulating circular economy aims in a multi-stakeholder network. In doing so, the study investigates the stakeholders’ communication network as an interaction between the policy and industry levels that cooperate to advance sustainable …

Local Approaches To Address Global Challenges: Educating Local Innovators For Positive Social Change, Martha Leticia Silva-Flores, Melisa Ladrón De Guevara
Journal of Management for Global Sustainability
Aligning global concerns with local challenges is essential for achieving long-term sustainability. This entails addressing local communities’ needs and issues to develop effective and sustainable solutions. This approach not only benefits communities but also has the potential to impact the environment and society positively. Local innovators play a fundamental role in promoting sustainable development by devising creative and sustainable solutions to problems affecting their communities. However, in the case of local entrepreneurs in the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area (GMA), their ventures often have a fleeting lifespan, limiting their impact on global challenges. This research study, therefore, focuses on empowering these local …
The Effect Of Reading Habits On Academic Success, Taylor Hicks
The Effect Of Reading Habits On Academic Success, Taylor Hicks
Masters Projects
The goal of most students is to achieve academic success. In order to be successful, students must form healthy reading habits because there is a positive correlation between academic success and reading habits. The more students read, the greater their chances of performing well academically. By participating in frequent reading, students will, not only perform well in school, they will also expand their vocabulary, improve their writing skills, and sharpen their critical thinking skills. We are in the midst of a literacy crisis, though. Students are choosing other avenues for entertainment instead of reading. This could potentially have detrimental consequences. …
Employment, Income, And Poverty In Kalamazoo City Core Neighborhoods, Val Klomparens
Employment, Income, And Poverty In Kalamazoo City Core Neighborhoods, Val Klomparens
Reports
This report employs a traditional methodology using American Community Survey data to examine employment, income, and poverty in three neighborhoods in Kalamazoo, Michigan: Eastside, Northside, and Edison. These neighborhoods are studied with an emphasis on eligibility status for the Distressed Area Recompete Pilot Program, administered through the U.S. Economic Development Administration. Eastside residents are unique in that a larger share earn income through wages or employment than do Michigan residents, yet their median income falls below those at the county and state levels in a statistically significant way. The Edison neighborhood is characterized by greater income inequality than the other …
Rupturing Tradition: Theorizing Black Women’S Place In The Discipline Through The Disruptive Rhetoric Of Sanctuary, Celnisha Leta Dangerfield
Rupturing Tradition: Theorizing Black Women’S Place In The Discipline Through The Disruptive Rhetoric Of Sanctuary, Celnisha Leta Dangerfield
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Black women need refuge from physical, mental, emotional and rhetorical violence. However, refuge that does not foster liberation can never offer the full protection of sanctuary. Black women uniquely understand that the only way to ensure full access to sanctuary is by circumventing place. Yet, people and scholarly disciplines overlook their valuable, experiential awareness of place. This dissertation takes an intersectional approach to place by analyzing Black women’s contributions to the rich rhetorical tradition. When we look to the past for guidance, it is easy to see Black women’s struggles are not bound by place or time. An analysis of …
"Sometimes Human Places Create Inhuman Monsters': An Examination Of The Monstrous And The Abject In American Literature, Carol Wardell
"Sometimes Human Places Create Inhuman Monsters': An Examination Of The Monstrous And The Abject In American Literature, Carol Wardell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
“‘Sometimes Human Places Create Inhuman Monsters’: An Examination of the Monstrous and the Abject in American Gothic Literature” defines “characters” in select texts as monstrous beings. These identified beings engage Julia Kristeva’s abject and differ from a grotesque. Whereas a grotesque character is often supportive in relation to the development of the story, the characters I have identified are crucial to the text. Without these characters and the abjection these monstrous beings evoke, the story would not develop in the same manner, have the same repercussions, nor have the same representation of cultural anxieties. In order to develop a definition …
Employment Leave For Early Pregnancy Endings: A Biopolitical Reproductive Governance Analysis In England And Wales, Al Middlemiss, I Boncori, J Brewis, J Davies, Vl Newton
Employment Leave For Early Pregnancy Endings: A Biopolitical Reproductive Governance Analysis In England And Wales, Al Middlemiss, I Boncori, J Brewis, J Davies, Vl Newton
School of Nursing and Midwifery
When a pregnancy ends in England and Wales, statutory time away from paid employment is limited to circumstances where there is a live birth or stillbirth. Forms of leave, such as Maternity Leave or Paternity Leave, depend on parental status derived from the civil registration of a new person or a post-viability stillbirth. Other early pregnancy endings, such as miscarriage or abortion, do not provide specific time off work after pregnancy. This paper uses the concept of reproductive governance to analyze current and shifting biopolitical truth discourses, strategies of intervention, and modes of subjectification around post-pregnancy leaves. It shows how …

Sounding Ethics: Musical Signification Of Moral Choices In Video Games, Hayden Mesnick
Sounding Ethics: Musical Signification Of Moral Choices In Video Games, Hayden Mesnick
Honors Projects
Interactivity is what distinguishes video games as a medium. In “moral choice video games,” or games in which the moral alignment of player choices affects plot and gameplay, the music often reflects the branching storylines. While scholarship exists that explores musical signifiers in video games, and scholarship alike exists that investigates moral choice video games, a gap in literature exists at the juncture of these two topics. This paper explores two moral choice video games—Undertale (Toby Fox, 2015) and Red Dead Redemption 2 (Rockstar Games, 2018)—in order to identify musical signifiers used by each game’s composer to represent these levels …

Chemical Characteristics Of Artificial Plastic Plants And The Presence Of Hazardous Elements From The Recycling Of Electrical And Electronic Waste, Andrew Turner, Montserrat Filella
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Because of their convenience, the demand for decorative plastic plants has been increasing over recent years. However, no information exists on the origin or nature of the polymers employed or the type of additives used in order to understand potential environmental impacts and inform safe and sustainable disposal or recycling practices. In this study, 203 parts or offcuts from 175 plastic plants acquired from European shops and venues have been analysed by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry to determine elemental content, while a selection has been analysed by infrared spectrometry to establish polymer type. The (usually green) moulded components (n = 159) …
