Characterization Of Raindrop Size Distribution Over Santa Clara Valley, Nathan Quinn, Sen Chiao
Characterization Of Raindrop Size Distribution Over Santa Clara Valley, Nathan Quinn, Sen Chiao
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
This study presents a year-long (January 2019–April 2020) analysis of the Z–R relationship and drop size distribution (DSD) scaling parameters for size, concentration, and shape of rain events over Santa Clara Valley, CA. External influences were analyzed based on synoptic variability and seasons. For the former, 850 hPa winds were separated into groups based on direction and magnitude. Results show that greater drop size, lower concentration, and larger shape parameters for spring, while winter and fall showed smaller drop sizes, higher concentrations, and smaller shape parameters. For synoptic variability, southeasterly-to-southwesterly flow was associated with larger drop sizes, larger concentrations, and …
Slow Speed Rail: The Social, Psychological And Environmental Benefits Of Long-Distance Train Travel, Vincent Gragnani
Slow Speed Rail: The Social, Psychological And Environmental Benefits Of Long-Distance Train Travel, Vincent Gragnani
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Long-distance train travel in the United States is slow, inefficient and woefully underfunded. Trains are routinely delayed for freight traffic. Many major cities are served in the middle of the night, or not at all. And the cost of a sleeping compartment is far out of reach for most Americans. This is all in stark contrast to the reliable services offered across Europe and parts of Asia. But for the 3.5 million people who ride Amtrak’s long-distance trains every year, the experience can be a fulfilling one. This web-based project, slowspeedrail.com, explores these benefits, namely, an intimacy with the landscape …

Essays On Tax Impacts On Corporate Finance, Corporate Governance And Regional Disparity, Mei Li
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation consists of three chapters that cover topics on tax impacts on corporate finance, regional disparity and corporate governance.
Chapter 1 - How Do Net Operating Loss Carryforwards Affect Tax Impact on Corporate Capital Structure? This paper examines the impact of net operating loss (NOL) carryforwards on the tax implications of corporate capital structure. Leveraging the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 (TCJA), the largest tax reform in four decades, this paper investigates the effect of NOL carryforwards on firms' sensitivity to tax reforms. As NOL carryforwards have become increasingly significant since 2000, but not widely researched due …

A Functional Genomics Pipeline To Identify High-Value Asthma And Allergy Cpgs In The Human Methylome, Andréanne Morin, Katherine Rivera-Spoljaric, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
BACKGROUND: DNA methylation of cytosines at cytosine-phosphate-guanine (CpG) dinucleotides (CpGs) is a widespread epigenetic mark, but genome-wide variation has been relatively unexplored due to the limited representation of variable CpGs on commercial high-throughput arrays.
OBJECTIVES: To explore this hidden portion of the epigenome, this study combined whole-genome bisulfite sequencing with in silico evidence of gene regulatory regions to design a custom array of high-value CpGs. This study focused on airway epithelial cells from children with and without allergic asthma because these cells mediate the effects of inhaled microbes, pollution, and allergens on asthma and allergic disease risk.
METHODS: This study …

Dispersion In Single-Wall Carbon Nanotube Film: An Application Of Bogoliubov–Valatin Transformation For Hamiltonian Diagonalization, Chandra M. Adhikari, Da’Shawn M. Morris, Thomas W. Noonan, Tikaram Neupane, Basu R. Lamichhane, Bhoj R. Gautam
College of Health, Science, and Technology
We present a theoretical study on the energy dispersion of an ultrathin film of periodically-aligned single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with the help of the Bogoliubov–Valatin transformation. The Hamiltonian of the film was derived using the many-particle green function technique in the Matsubara frequency formalism. The periodic array of SWCNTs was embedded in a dielectric with comparatively higher permittivity than the substrate and the superstrate such that the SWCNT film became independent with the axis of quantization but keeps the thickness as the variable parameter, making the film neither two-dimensional nor three-dimensional, but transdimensional. It was revealed that the energy dispersion …

Regulatory Trading, David A. Weisbach
Regulatory Trading, David A. Weisbach
University of Chicago Law Review
Regulatory trading systems, such as the SO2 cap-and-trade system, are ubiquitous in environmental and natural resources law. In addition to cap-and-trade systems for pollutants such as SO2, NOx, and CO2, environmental and natural resources law uses trading in areas such as endangered species, water quality, wetlands, vehicle mileage, and forestry and farming practices. Trading, however, is rarely used as a regulatory approach in other areas of law. This Article seeks to identify the reasons for this dichotomy. To understand the dichotomy, the Article examines the uses of trading in environmental and natural resources law, where it has been successful, and …

Knowledge of a species’ distribution throughout a landscape is crucial for developing long-term conservation practices and effective management plans. Accurate distributional data are particularly important for threatened or rare species with a broad geographic range and low detectability in their preferred habitats, as surveying and successfully encountering this type of species is oftentimes difficult. One such species is the eastern massasauga (Sistrurus catenatus), a small- bodied, federally threatened rattlesnake with a distribution centered around the Great Lakes region. The current status of many massasauga populations remains uncertain, hindering effective recovery efforts. We used single-season occupancy models to reassess the status …

Reclaiming And Reconceptualizing Accountability, Joseph Hailpern
Dissertations
This body of work contributes to the exploration of the intended and unintended consequences of the policy levers, referred to as education accountability policy, that have driven entire systems toward the inclusion of student performance data into educator performance ratings and the impact on the profession. Only from an extensive understanding of where we have been can a reimagined path forward be born to serve our youth and society better. This mixed methods dissertation does so by uncovering the legal landscape that defines the policy levers and bringing educators together in focus groups to delve deeply into these levers’ impact …

The recent proliferation of DNA testing in both popular culture and higher education calls to question whether such testing reifies race as a biological construct and, in particular, whether or not it disrupts or reinforces monoracial categorizations. Graduate students, who are often at a point in their educational journeys to further question and critique commonly held ideas, provide a unique lens through which to investigate discourses surrounding DNA testing. In this qualitative study, we analyze data from four focus groups with 22 racially diverse U.S. graduate students who had recently completed an ancestry test. We identify two specific discourses that …

Emancipatory And Retributive Labor: Conflicting Representations Of Enslaved Labor In Us And Caribbean Literature, 1830–1855, Michael Druffel
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Emancipatory and Retributive Labor follows the development of a concept that I call emancipatory labor as it appeared in the US and Caribbean during the period 1830 to 1855. Emancipatory labor is a subversive tactic in which enslaved people in the United States and Caribbean redefined a portion of their labor in capitalist terms. Re-theorizing a portion of enslaved labor stakes a claim to agency and humanity according to Western, humanistic logic. Examples of the types of labor being redefined include selling commodities, hiring time, and working “extras” for wages. I use enslaved person Lunsford Lane’s 1842 narrative as a …

The application of carbonate clumped isotope (Δ47) thermometry in deep-time is often limited by modification of the original temperature signal by thermal resetting. New modeling approaches to estimate the initial isotopic composition of partially reset calcites and maximal burial temperatures, however, open promising avenues in temperature reconstruction. Such approaches strongly depend on laboratory-derived kinetic parameters of calcite materials, which may differ in their microstructure, water content and distribution, and minor and trace element composition, and thus may have different resetting kinetics. The rostra of belemnites, an extinct group of mollusks with a wide temporal and spatial occurrence in the Mesozoic, …

Available soil moisture is thought to be the limiting factor for most ecosystem processes in the cold polar desert of the McMurdo Dry Valleys (MDVs) of Antarctica. Previous studies have shown that microfauna throughout the MDVs are capable of biological activity when sufficient soil moisture is available (~2–10% gravimetric water content), but few studies have attempted to quantify the distribution, abundance, and frequency of soil moisture on scales beyond that of traditional field work or local field investigations. In this study, we present our work to quantify the soil moisture content of soils throughout the Fryxell basin using multispectral satellite …

Rural And Urban Difference In The Acceptance Of Alternative Water Management Strategies: Case Study Of Idaho Residents, Monica L. Hubbard, Rebecca L. Som Castellano
Public Policy and Administration Faculty Publications and Presentations
Idaho is one of the fastest-growing states in the US. The stressors of population growth and climate change are increasing the strain on its water resources, emphasizing the need for water management strategies. Public support, however, can vary by a range of factors, including geography. This study aims to assess the rural and urban distinctions of support for water resource management. In 2014, 401 people from Idaho’s general public responded to an online survey, with 375 of the respondents georeferenced into three groups: urban areas; urban clusters (small towns); and rural. The responses showed similarities in support among the groups; …

A Minor Place: A Short Story Collection, Nathaniel Pyle
A Minor Place: A Short Story Collection, Nathaniel Pyle
Master's Theses
In this collection, characters often face interior struggles such as past lives, abusive upbringings, dead partners, and relationship struggles. A Minor Place concerns loneliness and existentialism set with a melancholy, southern gothic setting. Characters toil with their psychological state within a shared and collective universe of the unknown. The characters found within A Minor Place deal with sensitive issues such as loss, isolation, and overcoming their difficulties. A Minor Place implements narratives to showcase a "minor” tonality and coloration and style to accompany this titular minor place.

Old trees have many ecological and socio-cultural values. However, knowledge of the factors influencing their long-term persistence in human-dominated landscapes is limited. Here, using an extensive database (nearly 1.8 million individual old trees belonging to 1,580 species) from China, we identified which species were most likely to persist as old trees in human-dominated landscapes and where they were most likely to occur. We found that species with greater potential height, smaller leaf size and diverse human utilization attributes had the highest probability of long-term persistence. The persistence probabilities of human-associated species (taxa with diverse human utilization attributes) were relatively high …

Investigation Of Natural Pozzolans: Analyzing The Practicality Of Natural Pozzolans As A Partial Substitute For Cement In Grout Production, Jadyn I. Breien, Andrew J. Baro, Logan T. Marino
Architectural Engineering
This senior project aims to investigate whether natural pozzolans are more sustainable than fly ash and a sufficient substitute for cement in the production of grout. By following the intent of the ASTM (American Society of Testing and Materials) standards, a conclusion will be made to determine if natural pozzolans can contribute comparable strength in compression. The objective is to prove that natural pozzolans should be utilized in the production of grout rather than alternatives such as fly ash because it can provide similar strength while being more economical and more sustainable.

The Role Of The Armed Forces Of The Philippines (Afp) In Disaster Response And Adaptation Strategies To Climatic Disasters In Manila, Edmundo Nicolas Jr.
Geography Masters Research Papers
This study described the roles of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) in Disaster Risk Reduction Management (DRRM) in Metro Manila and how climate-induced hazards impact the role of the military. It used a qualitative approach, which involved semi- structured interviews among AFP officers and barangay leaders with expertise and experience in DRRM and an analysis of selected policy documents and military doctrine. These methods revealed that: (1) the military acts as a political first-aid, since they are the first responders – thus, the face of the local government – in climactic disasters during peacetime; (2) the military is …
Indigenous Water Justice: Theory, Gaps, And Opportunities For Application, Ruby Howard
Indigenous Water Justice: Theory, Gaps, And Opportunities For Application, Ruby Howard
University Honors Theses
Indigenous people are particularly at risk of water scarcity in the U.S. and abroad, and face high rates of nonexistent or failing water infrastructure, water pollution, pipeline proposals that threaten water resources, and water-related climate change impacts. They also are often unequipped, politically and economically, to react and adapt to these impacts, resulting in devastating health impacts. Due to this widespread insecurity, many scholars are calling for the application of a theory and set of principles known as water justice. However, Indigenous people have pointed out that water justice literature does not focus enough on Indigenous issues, often neglecting the …

The Sanitary Lens: A Study Of 19th Century Public Health In British Colonial India And Australia, Josephine Cannistra
University Honors Theses
Specific colonial processes informed highly distinct policies of public health and sanitation in colonial India and Australia. Their distinctions and lasting legacies are obscured when they are uncritically lumped together within the British Empire. The 19th century was a period of great change throughout India and Australia. It was also a period of dramatic change in general understandings of sanitation and health. This paper examines colonial India and Australia through the lens of sanitation and medicine as it was understood and practiced in British spheres of influence. A comparative approach to these histories and this past sheds light on how …

Mauldin, Stephen Mattingly, Mahshid Haque, John P. Connolly, Latisha Thomas, Zachary Tarbet, Farzana Chowdhury, Rupal Parekh
TREC Final Reports
Nearly 4.6 million immigrants aged 65 and older live in the United States. This population is expected to more than triple in size by 2050. A lack of culturally appropriate transportation solutions for older immigrants creates disparities in access to services for older immigrant populations, increasing their risk of social isolation and reduced physical and mental health. A growing number of older immigrants live in low-density urban environments, which are characterized by high automobile dependency and limited public transportation. In these environments, older immigrants are likely to depend on others to provide private transportation. Negative aspects of this reliance on …

Bike Share: A Discussion And Case Study Analysis Including Recommendations For Cal Poly And The City Of San Luis Obispo, Gabrielle N. Delavallade
City and Regional Planning
Since 2015, micromobility has swiftly expanded to new cities across the United States. Micromobility is defined as a category of transportation services that are shared-use, lightweight, and personal use such as electric scooters (escooters), shared bicycles, and electric bicycles (e-bikes). Micromobility vehicles can be person powered, electrically powered, or a combination of the two (CRCOG, 2022; BTS, 2022). One form of micromobility that is gaining popularity is known as bicycle share. In 2020, the North American Bikeshare and Scootershare Association (NABSA) 2020 State of the Industry Report found that an estimated 83.4 million trips were taken in North America alone …
Racializing Algorithms, Jessica M. Eaglin
Racializing Algorithms, Jessica M. Eaglin
Articles by Maurer Faculty
There is widespread recognition that algorithms in criminal law’s administration can impose negative racial and social effects. Scholars tend to offer two ways to address this concern through law—tinkering around the tools or abolishing the tools through law and policy. This Article contends that these paradigmatic interventions, though they may center racial disparities, legitimate the way race functions to structure society through the intersection of technology and law. In adopting a theoretical lens centered on racism and the law, it reveals deeply embedded social assumptions about race that propel algorithms as criminal legal reform in response to mass incarceration. It …
