New Law Governs Stock Donations
New Law Governs Stock Donations
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
The new "Business Act" has created a new opportunity for persons looking for tax deduction opportunities. Donors have until 31 May 1997 to take advantage of an expanded tax deduction (based on market value rather than cost) for contributions of publicly held stock to private foundations like FARMS. There are limits, of course. Consult a competent professional for more information and for answers to specific questions.
Reprint Clarifies Issues On Geographies Focused On New York
Reprint Clarifies Issues On Geographies Focused On New York
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
A new FARMS Reprint makes available portions of three publications from the 1980s that retain their value for providing insights into Book of Mormon geography. In "A Key for Evaluating Nephite Geographies," reprinted from the first issue (1989) of the Review of Books on the Book of Mormon, John Clark elucidates what the Book of Mormon itself says that can be used to construct a basic framework for a Book of Mormon geography. He focuses especially on those references that give relative distances or directions between various locations. The resulting framework provides an excellent test for proposed geographies.
Generative Ai And Opportunities For Feminist Classroom Assignments, Sarah F. Small
Generative Ai And Opportunities For Feminist Classroom Assignments, Sarah F. Small
Feminist Pedagogy
Handwringing about ChatGPT and generative AI has penetrated teaching circles. Many educators are concerned it will disrupt education in negative ways. However, I introduce two approaches to assignments in which students work in tandem with AI to develop better understandings of reflexivity and feminist epistemology. I believe, if we are intentional in our teaching practice, our educational responses to generative AI can be in feminist directions.

The Crocodile God Of Pharaoh In Mesopotamia, John Gee
The Crocodile God Of Pharaoh In Mesopotamia, John Gee
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
In the famous anti-Mormon crusade against the book of Abraham in 1912, one of the individuals involved asserted that the book of Abraham could not be true because "Chaldeans and Egyptians are hopelessly mixed together, although as dissimilar and remote in language, religion and locality as are American and Chinese." This exaggerated opinion was seconded by the Reverend Samuel A. B. Mercer: "I challenge any intelligent person who knows Chaldean and Egyptian history to read the first chapter of said book [of Abraham] without experiencing the same feeling. Chaldea and Egypt are hopelessly mixed . . . . No one …

In the latest issue of the FARMS Review of Books, editor Daniel C. Peterson recommends the LDS Collectors Edition (a CD containing an electronic library of books, periodicals, and study aids) most highly among the publications reviewed. This product is inexpensive and brings together a large quantity of publications invaluable to students and teachers of the gospel. Also receiving favorable reviews are the Book of Mormon Reference Library (another CD), and books by Robert L Millet and H. Donl Peterson.

A Framework For Creating Virtual Reality Models For More Effective Coastal Flood Risk Communication, Tina Korani, Alexandrea Martinez
A Framework For Creating Virtual Reality Models For More Effective Coastal Flood Risk Communication, Tina Korani, Alexandrea Martinez
CSU Journal of Sustainability and Climate Change
Coastal cities are exposed to increasing risks of flooding from sea-level rise. Climate change is expected to double the frequency of coastal flooding within the next decade, and some areas could experience floods of a magnitude 100 times higher than currently (Vitousek et al., 2017). People living in at-risk areas often ignore the impact of climate change on flood intensity and frequency. Immersive visual storytelling techniques proved promising and powerful tools to engage with and raise awareness of flood hazards. Here, we are introducing a framework to use Virtual Reality (VR) to reach better people living in coastal cities and …
Taxonomic Revision And Phylogenetic Analysis Of The Philadelphicus Group In The Genus Proctacanthus (Insecta: Diptera: Asilidae), And Key To All Proctacanthus North Of Mexico, Teagan Marie Mulford
Taxonomic Revision And Phylogenetic Analysis Of The Philadelphicus Group In The Genus Proctacanthus (Insecta: Diptera: Asilidae), And Key To All Proctacanthus North Of Mexico, Teagan Marie Mulford
Theses and Dissertations
Proctacanthus (Macquart 1838), an elegant genus of robber flies within the Asilidae family, plays a significant ecological and economic role. However, the lack of a comprehensive taxonomic treatment hinders their identification and thus their use in evolutionary and behavioral research. This study focuses on the taxonomic revision of the Proctacanthus, identifying the features used in recognizing the philadelphicus Species Group and the rufiventris Species Group. By providing systematic and biological data, describing new species, and offering a key for identification, this research contributes to understanding the ecological significance and geographic distribution and history of Proctacanthus. This work will enhance future …

Social Networks, Access To Healthcare, And The Health-Related Quality Of Life Of Young Informal Workers In Nigeria’S Construction Industry, Ayomide Oluwaseyi Oladosu
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
Young informal workers in Nigeria face a significant decline in their health-related quality of life (HRQoL) due to their lack of control over their employment conditions. This problem is particularly pronounced among young informal workers in the construction industry, given its precarious and hazardous nature. To enhance HRQoL, these workers primarily rely on their social networks for support. However, given the level of hazards they encounter in the construction industry, social networks alone may not be sufficient to directly improve their HRQoL. Nevertheless, social networks can facilitate access to healthcare, which in turn may enhance HRQoL. Unfortunately, limited research has …

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
The analysis of plutonium (Pu) in soil samples can inform the understanding of soil erosion processes globally. However, there are specific challenges associated for analysis in tropical soils and so an optimal analytical methodology ensuring best sensitivity is critical. This method aimed to demonstrate the feasibility of sample preparation and analysis of Pu isotopes in African soils, considering the environmental and cost implications applicable to low-resource laboratories. The separation procedure builds upon previous work using TEVA columns, further demonstrating their usefulness for the reduction of uranium (U) interference in ICP-MS analysis with enhanced selectivity for Pu. Here several steps were …

On March 27 Carl Johannessen, emeritus professor of Geography from the University of Oregon, spoke about evidences found in the ancient Old World of crops normally considered indigenous to the New World, particularly maize. His discussion, entitled "Diffusion of Cultural Traits across the Oceans in Pre-Columbian Times," included a slide presentation showing ancient architecture that depicts what he argues is maize. If his evidence is confirmed by additional research, it will help establish the existence of contacts between the Old and New Worlds before Columbus, thus helping to establish the plausibility of the Book of Mormon account.

01. Animating Traditional Stories As Pedagogical Tools For Language Reclamation (P, T), Noah Ha'alilo Solomon, Dannii Yarbrough
CoLang 2022 Workshops
In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn practical skills for creating animated videos of traditional stories for use in community language reclamation efforts. Curriculum centered within Indigenous storytelling prioritizes place-based education and alternative literacies that are essential to Indigenous knowledge systems while reinforcing the validity of Indigenous traditions of language transmission and destabilizing the hegemony of Western pedagogical practices. Each day we will begin with a presentation and discussion of different topics from Indigenous scholarship in pedagogical methods as they relate to developing appropriate animated videos, including linguistic features of narratives, and potential applications of animated traditional stories in language …
