Physical And Chemical Effects Of Conventional Microplastic Glitter Versus Alternative Glitter Particles On A Freshwater Plant (Lemnaceae: Lemna Minor), Bas Boots, Dannielle Senga Green, Brigitta Olah-Kovacs, Falco F De, Emanuele Lupo
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Glitters are primary microplastics which are directly littered into the environment, yet the ecological effects have seldom been tested. When microplastics enter the environment, their physical presence and chemical leachate may alter the physiology of primary producers. Glitter can be composed of plastic or natural and/or biodegradable materials, often with additives. Three experiments were run for 14 days to separate chemical and physical effects of different types of glitter: polyethylene terephthalate (PET), biodegradable modified regenerated cellulose (MRC), synthetic mica, and a natural particle control (kaolinite) on several physical characteristics of Lemna minor (common duckweed). L. minor was exposed to either …
Lead And Mercury In Historical Books And Their Contribution To Dust Contamination, Andrew Turner
Lead And Mercury In Historical Books And Their Contribution To Dust Contamination, Andrew Turner
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Historical products are often a source of toxic substances, like heavy metals, that have since been restricted. In this study, the lead (Pb) and mercury (Hg) content of 133 books housed in two collections in southwest England (a university library and council repository), and published between 1704 and 2018, have been determined on-site by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. Lead was detected in the front panels, text blocks and interior colour illustrations of most books, with maximum concentration of 15,100 mg kg-1, 8680 mg kg-1 and 12,800 mg kg-1, respectively. However, concentrations above 1000 mg kg-1 were generally restricted to books published …
Combining Expert Opinions To Assess Risk Of Change In Earth Systems: Permafrost Collapse, Global Wildfire, And Water Security, Sayedeh Sara Sayedi
Combining Expert Opinions To Assess Risk Of Change In Earth Systems: Permafrost Collapse, Global Wildfire, And Water Security, Sayedeh Sara Sayedi
Theses and Dissertations
In a world of uncertainty and change, leaders should base their decisions on best available scientific evidence. However, history has shown that science is often inadequately incorporated into the decision-making process. This dissertation investigates three environmental issues to identify the challenges of considering Earth system dynamics in policymaking and management. I also propose solutions for improving the two-way exchange of knowledge and values between researchers and policymakers. In chapter one, I investigate subsea permafrost carbon sensitivity to climate change using an expert assessment. The analysis revealed that subsea permafrost contains significant carbon stocks and is already contributing to climate change …

Two Cardinal Portraits By Scipione Pulzone In The Harvard Art Museums And Their Related Versions, Danielle Carrabino
Museum of Art: Books
Book abstract:
The visual legacy of early modern cardinals constitutes a vast and extremely rich body of artworks, many of superb quality, in a variety of media, often by well-known artists and skilled craftsmen. Yet cardinal portraits have primarily been analyzed within biographical studies of the represented individual, in relation to the artists who created them, or within the broader genre of portraiture. Portrait Cultures of the Early Modern Cardinal addresses questions surrounding the production, collection, and status of the cardinal portrait, covering diverse geographies and varied media. Examining the development of cardinals' imagery in terms of their multi-layered identities, …
Social And Cultural Values In Alaskan Subsistence Management: Rurality And The Meaning Of “Meaningful” Natural Resource Management, Jarred Haynes
Social And Cultural Values In Alaskan Subsistence Management: Rurality And The Meaning Of “Meaningful” Natural Resource Management, Jarred Haynes
Capstone Collection
In Alaska, subsistence is a way of life for some communities. The Federal Subsistence Board (FSB) oversees the Federal Subsistence Management Program. One of its responsibilities is to determine areas as subsistence or non-subsistence areas. This decision, in part, is based on whether subsistence is a “principal characteristic of the economy, culture, and way of life”. (James A. Fall, Division of Subsistence, 2018). The federal policy grants these communities priority in the taking of wild resources (Title VIII of the Alaska National Interests Lands Conservation Act). Interviews revealed factors of vulnerability and resilience, specifically in the context of subsistence. Scoones …

Many people suffer from poverty globally, and economic tools used to combat it have varied from one country to another with some enacting noticeable change. The topic of micro-credit attracted attention after the Grameen Bank’s microfinance method was recognized for decreasing poverty in rural Bangladesh by granting loans to women almost exclusively. This paper explores the application of the Grameen method of microfinance in Egypt by reviewing the specific conditions surrounding women’s poverty in Egypt and the economic and social outcomes of past Grameen microfinance efforts in Egypt. While the Grameen method of microfinance successfully improved well-being indicators and economic …

The Provenances And Postscripts Of 1989, Jokubas Salyga
The Provenances And Postscripts Of 1989, Jokubas Salyga
Political Science Faculty Publications
The books under review exemplify some of the finest recent work on the historically informed political economy of Central and Eastern Europe. While different in their conceptual frameworks and geographical foci, the titles converge in the advancement of nuanced and convincing arguments, displaying both theoretical acuity and empirical depth to great effect. Bartel, Fabry, and Pula all share a resolute dedication to illuminating the under-explored provenances of neoliberalism and/or globalization in the region, that predate the annus mirabilis of 1989. Their contributions situate the ‘Eastern bloc’ states within the contours of evolving global political economy and the existential crises engulfing …

Multi-Label Classification With Deep Learning For Retail Recommendation, Zhi Yuan Poo, Choo Yee Ting, Yuen Peng Loh, Khairil Imran Ghauth
Journal of Informatics and Web Engineering
Selecting the right retail business for a location is crucial for the success of a business because it determines the likelihood of favourable return on investment. One common approach used in retail recommendation is multi-class classification, where retail businesses are categorized into different classes or categories based on various features or attributes. Existing research in the field of retail recommendation has extensively proposed and evaluated different algorithms, techniques, and approaches for multi-class classification in the context of retail recommendation, however, limited work has been focusing on formulating retail recommendation as a multi-label problem. This is because in retail recommendation, one …

Computing Availability Metric For 5g As A Service Network, Nithin Chitta, Darin Andrew Kaufman, Somaraju Kaki
Defensive Publications Series
In the traditional way of computing availability, the measures mean time between failure and mean time to restore service are employed as parameters. However, for a 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) fifth-generation (5G) as a service consumer network (that encompasses a cloud-based deployment which is operated by a vendor), any metric that is exposed to a service provider (SP) needs to be refined to indicate the availability of the different services without being improperly influenced by hardware and software failure times. Techniques are presented herein that support the development of an overall network availability metric. Aspects of the presented techniques …
The Role Of Medium And Small Size Ports In Sustainable Development: Evidence From The Port Of Plymouth, S Karamperidis, Ms Lafir
The Role Of Medium And Small Size Ports In Sustainable Development: Evidence From The Port Of Plymouth, S Karamperidis, Ms Lafir
Plymouth Business School
Ports are a key facilitator of maritime trade as 80% of global trade is carried by ships (UNCTAD, 2022). Ports act as crucial gateways and nodes which support billions of tonnes moving through them. Ports are viewed as an economic catalyst for the regions they serve contributing to economic growth, jobs, taxes, and facilitating decarbonisation (Notteboom et al, 2022; Alamoush et al, 2022). The rapid rise of globalisation and technological advances has increased trade through shipping, specifically containers, to utilise economies of scale (UNCTAD, 2022). That adds tremendous pressure on the logistics and infrastructure of ports (ibid). Larger vessels present …

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Debris-covered glaciers are a common feature of the mountain cryosphere in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau. A better understanding of these glaciers is necessary to reduce the uncertainties in regional water resource variability and to anticipate potential cryospheric risks. In this study, we quantified the seasonal thinning and surface mass balance patterns of two neighbouring debris-covered glaciers (23K Glacier and 24K Glacier) in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau with four unpiloted aerial vehicle surveys and in situ measurements. We observed that the thinning of 23K Glacier was ∼2–7 times greater than that of the 24K Glacier for annual and cold periods. The …

Against The Tide: Indigenous Knowledge And Education For Humanization, Arturo Rodriguez, Kevin Russel Magill
Journal of Multicultural Affairs
Power brokers and their market economies enforce education on a global level. According to the United Nations, the effects of global neoliberal capitalism cause human rights violations in all parts of the world, yet democratic countries scoff at these findings (Pogge, 2002 & 2005). People of the world continue to believe that tying minoritized students to existing structures and ensuring enculturation is the best possible outcome for all involved (Suárez-Orozco & Suárez-Orozco, 2015). That is, minoritized children are educated to ensure first-world countries produce a minimally educated and willing labor force. In this paper we argue the following: 1) power …

Reproductively Viable Population Of American Black Bears (Ursus Americanus) In Lowland Chihuahuan Desert Habitat Of Trans-Pecos Texas, Franklin D. Yancey Ii, Stephen Kasper
Western North American Naturalist
During a 6.5-year camera-trap study in Big Bend Ranch State Park (situated in the Trans-Pecos region of West Texas), we documented a persistent breeding population of American black bears (Ursus americanus) in the Solitario region of the park. The habitat in the Solitario, which is an isolated, eroded remnant of volcanic activity, is low-elevation Chihuahuan Desert scrub but includes significant and complex localized topography and prolonged water sources in the form of tinajas. From January 2016 to May 2022, camera traps captured 367,301 photographs. Of these, 868 contained one or more black bears, resulting in 1010 black bear …

Leyla Erbil’S A Strange Woman As The Undoing Of Shame And The Discovery Of Self, Gönül Kığılcım
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Shame plays a major role in the formation of femininity, and as Ruth Leys argues, shame has surpassed guilt as the dominant emotional reference in the Western world. If shame is a lived social experience rather than an interior trait, how does this new understanding of shame influence our readings of literature, particularly that of women writers? Analyzing Leyla Erbil's recently translated novel, A Strange Woman (1971), and interacting with theories of emotion and affect theory, I explore whether viewing women's writing from this new perspective can offer new insight into literature by women and particularly the literature by women …
