Clay-rich flocculated suspended sediments are an important constituent of estuarine and coastal systems globally. They are responsible for the host, movement and deposition of a variety of pollutants, contaminants and sediment itself. Accurate modelling of the movement of these sediments is crucial for a number of industries including fisheries, aquaculture, shipping and waste management. This requires an accurate and reliable measurements of the physical properties of flocs and their behaviour. Porosity is a key element in floc structures, and this research provides updated 3D quantified porosity and pore space morphological data in relation to influences on floc settling behaviour. We …

Hate Speech, Historical Oppressions, And European Human Rights, Eva Nave
Buffalo Human Rights Law Review
Today, around 5 billion people communicate through the Internet. While the benefits of online communication are undeniable, we also witness the proliferation of online hate speech, often associated with an increase in offline violence. Internet intermediaries and public bodies have developed frameworks to counter online hate speech. However, current frameworks lack a standardized approach to the conceptualization of hate speech. Some conceptualizations are overbroad, and others are underinclusive; overbroad because they lead to the removal of legal content (e.g. removal tools deleting legal content posted by marginalized communities), and underinclusive as the context of posts by linguistic minorities is often …

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The capacity of specialty memory clinics in the United States is very limited. If lower socioeconomic status or minoritized racial group is associated with reduced use of memory clinics, this could exacerbate health care disparities, especially if more effective treatments of Alzheimer disease become available. We aimed to understand how use of a memory clinic is associated with neighborhood-level measures of socioeconomic factors and the intersectionality of race.
METHODS: We conducted an observational cross-sectional study using electronic health record data to compare the neighborhood advantage of patients seen at the Washington University Memory Diagnostic Center with the …

The Bølling-Allerød interstadial (14,700–12,900 years before present), during the last deglaciation, was characterized by rapid warming and sea level rise. Yet, the response of the Arctic terrestrial cryosphere during this abrupt climate change remains thus far elusive. Here we present a multi-proxy analysis of a sediment record from the northern Svalbard continental margin, an area strongly influenced by sea ice export from the Arctic, to elucidate sea level - permafrost erosion connections. We show that permafrost-derived material rich in biospheric carbon became the dominant source of sediments at the onset of the Bølling-Allerød, despite the lack of direct connections with …
