Environmental Justice And Low-Income Residents Of Houston Texas: The Inequities Of Catastrophic Weather Event Recovery Left Out And Expendable - Again, Carmen Danielle Reed
Dissertations (2016-Present)
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Office of Coastal Management, from 2017-2021, the United States has averaged 17.2 annual climate/weather disasters. In 2021 alone, the U.S. experienced 20 billion-dollar disasters and since 1980, the U.S. has experienced 341 climate/weather disasters which in toto, resulted in $2.155 trillion in losses. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is authorized under The Stafford Act, to be the lead federal agency tasked to help people after disasters specifically floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, and forest fires. In anticipation of increased climate driven disaster, for FY 2021, the U.S. House Appropriations Committee allocated to FEMA $25.89 …

Beyond Corporate Greenwashing: Discourse Of A 'Just' Electric Energy Transition Materialized At The Thacker Pass Lithium Mine, Laekyn Kelley
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Thacker Pass in Northern Nevada is a rich desert ecosystem with spiritual significance to local Indigenous peoples, and it is also the site for what will be, for now, the United States’ largest open-pit lithium mine. Lithium is one mineral constituent of electric batteries which are essential to current U.S. electric energy transition policy, a transition which policymakers and other public groups have called on to be done in a way which is just. However, what exactly a just electric energy transition looks like in places like Thacker Pass is under continued negotiation in theoretical and practical senses. Existing research …
Influence Of Access To Public Parks On Mortality Among Older Adults In The United States, Jiaying Dong
Influence Of Access To Public Parks On Mortality Among Older Adults In The United States, Jiaying Dong
All Dissertations
Research shows the health benefits of green spaces are universal, but there's a noticeable disparity in their distribution in the U.S., especially between urban and rural areas. Marginalized groups, particularly those of lower economic status or racial minorities, often have limited access to these spaces. This inequity could be more impactful on the elderly, who are more vulnerable to health issues. However, specific health benefits of green spaces for seniors are not well defined. This study examines the correlation between park access, mortality in those over 65, and income disparities across all U.S. counties.
The study employed a quantitative approach …

Analyzing Transportation Amenities In The City Of Shamokin: An Emphasis On The Lower Anthracite Transportation System, Zane Hensal, Jeff Cianfrocca, Kosta Varkaris
Coal Region Field Station Student Projects
As the population gets older, and means of transportation get more expensive, the need for increased public transportation has increased exponentially. To develop recommendations for the Lower Anthracite Transportation System (LATS) in Northumberland County, this report compared various forms of multimodal transportation throughout the United States, and other foreign countries, and compared them with the current standards and practices set by LATS service. According to the United State Census Bureau, Shamokin is a small 3rd class city in Northumberland County Pennsylvania, with a population of 6,901, a poverty rate of 35.9%, and is in the LATS service area. Shamokin …
Shadow Districts, Quinn Yeargain
Shadow Districts, Quinn Yeargain
Cardozo Law Review
Redistricting disputes—for congressional, state legislative, and local districts—have proven all-consuming in politics. Litigation over the legality of districts, under both federal and state law, is near constant when decennial redistricting occurs. But largely omitted from redistricting litigation and scholarship, however, are the districts drawn to elect members of statewide boards. These boards have outsized authority over some of the most salient disputes in politics today, with state boards of education setting policies for what can be taught in classrooms and how LGBT students are treated by the public education system, public utility commissions adopting policies for renewable energy production and …

Identifying The Disproportionate Impacts Of Hurricane Harvey, Hurricane Katrina, And Covid-19 On African Americans: A Pandemic Within A Pandemic, Daniella Plaza
Dissertations (2016-Present)
African Americans have endured a disproportionately high amount of exposure to natural and man-made calamities. The racial inequities against African Americans following the hurricanes Katrina, Harvey, and the Coronavirus were examined in this study. Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Harvey took place in two different states, but the low-income vulnerable populations encountered the same outcome which manifested as deteriorating health, lack of rapid assistance from the government, and, the exacerbation of pre-existing conditions. Literature reviews have uncovered political apathy and systemic racism. These people have lost faith in the government as evidenced by Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Harvey, and COVID-19. The results …
Making Kin With Trees: Three Educators And Children Entangled With Treescapes, Stephanie Jones, Lindsey Lush, Sarah Whitaker
Making Kin With Trees: Three Educators And Children Entangled With Treescapes, Stephanie Jones, Lindsey Lush, Sarah Whitaker
Occasional Paper Series
In this article, three educators from one small U.S. city draw on Donna Haraway’s feminist, posthumanist idea of making kin to explore their personal relations with trees and their work as educators to support children’s entanglements with trees. Working in three very different contexts with children: a working-class neighborhood, a public school kindergarten, and a forest kindergarten, the three authors illuminate the “magical” emergences of making kin with trees that fundamentally shifts what becomes possible to do and be. Their writing contributes to the fields of critical childhood geographies, feminist posthumanist pedagogies in early childhood education, and writing in affect …

Breaking The Loop: Strategies For Fighting Climate Change On U.S. Farms, Ashley Barry
Honors Capstones
Climate change is an increasingly urgent area of research due to the hardships it causes for lands and communities across the globe. Specifically in regard to the United States (U.S.), climate change has many concerning implications on our agricultural system. Increased weather hazards, decreased crop production, and drought are just a few of the hardships American farmers are facing in their fight to keep their farms alive and feed their communities, despite a rapidly changing climate. This study investigates how farmers can fight and prevent climate change through the use of specific mitigation and adaptation strategies on their farms. Semi- …
Exploring The Effect Of Freight On Tennessee Communities, Mitra Salehi Esfandarani
Exploring The Effect Of Freight On Tennessee Communities, Mitra Salehi Esfandarani
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This research underscores the critical role of Tennessee's transportation network, particularly its heavy reliance on trucking along rural roads, in facilitating the movement of goods and significantly impacting the state's economy. It emphasizes the need to comprehend the implications of freight transportation on both urban and rural areas, shedding light on the latter's frequent neglect despite substantial impacts. To bridge this disparity, the research focuses on evaluating and mitigating freight-related impacts in suburban and rural communities. The objective is to identify freight movement hotspots, analyze related externalities, and propose mitigation strategies while considering cost-effectiveness and stakeholder welfare. The study highlights …

Black Liberty In Emergency, Norrinda Brown
Black Liberty In Emergency, Norrinda Brown
Northwestern University Law Review
COVID-19 pandemic orders were weaponized by state and local governments in Black neighborhoods, often through violent acts of the police. This revealed an intersection of three centuries-old patterns— criminalizing Black movement, quarantining racial minorities in public health crises, and segregation. The geographic borders of the most restrictive pandemic order enforcement were nearly identical to the borders of highly segregated, historically Black neighborhoods.
The right to free movement is fundamental and, as a rule, cannot be impeded by the state. But the jurisprudence around state power in public health emergencies, deriving from the 1905 case Jacobson v. Massachusetts, has practically resulted …
Racism As A Threat To Financial Stability, Cary Martin Shelby
Racism As A Threat To Financial Stability, Cary Martin Shelby
Northwestern University Law Review
This Article draws from several theoretical frameworks such as critical race theory, law and economics, and rule of law conceptions to argue that the Financial Stability Oversight Council (FSOC) should formally recognize racism as a threat to financial stability due to its interconnectedness with recent and projected systemic disruptions. This Article begins by first introducing a novel model created by the author through which to dissect this claim. This “Systemic Disruption Model” provides a theoretical depiction of how racism drives every phase along the life-cycle continuum of a systemic disruption.
First, with respect to the Model’s “Introduction” phase, this Article …

Archaeology in 2022 features more calls than ever for a socially and politically engaged, progressive discipline. Archaeologists increasingly respect and integrate decolonizing and Indigenous knowledge in theory and practice. They acknowledge and embrace the fluidity and diversity of sexes and genders, past and present. They document patterns of migration, ancient as well as contemporary, to combat retrograde and racist narratives that remain pervasive in the public sphere. At the same time, the field has a deep‐seated conservative bastion toward which many scholars retreat, arguing for an “objective” past that is free of political implications or interpretive ambiguity. As anarchist archaeologists, …

Climate Futures: Classroom Engagements For Imagining Otherwise, Elaine Alvey
Climate Futures: Classroom Engagements For Imagining Otherwise, Elaine Alvey
Faculty and Staff
Given the realities currently at hand, it is easy to imagine the worst-case scenario climate futures, to become paralyzed by climate grief or to disengage all together. Inspired by pedagogical engagements with imagination and drawing on foundational geography skills, this three-day mini-unit invites secondary students to first analyze localized impacts of climate change, and then look to examples of positive climate futures before finally imagining for their own community’s resilient climate future.

Judicial Activism As A Pathway To Environmental Justice In Africa’S Mining Industry: The Case Of Nigeria And South-Africa, Onyekachi Eni Dr, Dr. Ngozi Chinwa Ole
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
Africa’s mining industry embodies the tension between socio-economic development, and environmental protection. On account of their abundant mineral resource endowments, Nigeria and South-Africa constitute Africa’s mining hub with the attendant environmental burdens evident in the distortion of natural environmental equilibrium, disruption of ecosystem services and dislocation of the people from their cultural moorings contrary to extant global and regional instruments on development and human rights. Notwithstanding the negative externalities of mining, the incidence of poverty and the absence of basic amenities in many mining communities often combine to frustrate the effort of mining-affected persons to obtain redress for the violation …
