Evaluation Of A Complexity-Based Morphosyntactic Treatment For Children With Language Disorders Of Mixed Etiologies, Kirsten M. Russell Jan 2023

Evaluation Of A Complexity-Based Morphosyntactic Treatment For Children With Language Disorders Of Mixed Etiologies, Kirsten M. Russell

Faculty Publications

Language disorder is characterized by difficulty with the comprehension and production of different aspects of language. School-aged children with developmental language disorder (DLD) and school-aged children with Down syndrome (DS) demonstrate similar deficits in the area of morphosyntax, which often creates barriers during social interactions and for academic learning. Although affected children may receive intervention, progress can be slow. Selecting appropriate treatment targets is critical for effective intervention. Traditional approaches for selecting treatment targets are based on developmental readiness (i.e., developmental) or functional need (i.e., remedial). However, intervention utilizing targets selected by these methods produce only modest results, despite a …

With the growth of blended teaching comes a need to support teachers that are shifting their instruction to this mode of teaching. Coaching is a form of professional development that is growing in K–12 institutions. However, research of coaching specifically intended to support blended teaching practices is lacking. This phenomenological qualitative study seeks to contribute to the body of research by exploring the coaching experiences of four K–12 teachers from second, fifth, junior high, and high school that are new to blended teaching. Through semi-structured interviews we sought to understand how our participants were experiencing the support for blended teaching …

Does Audit Regulation Improve The Underlying Information Used By Managers? Evidence From Pcaob Inspection Access And Management Forecast Accuracy, Brant E. Christensen, Lijun (Gillian) Lei, Sydney Qing Shu, Wayne Thomas Jan 2023

Does Audit Regulation Improve The Underlying Information Used By Managers? Evidence From Pcaob Inspection Access And Management Forecast Accuracy, Brant E. Christensen, Lijun (Gillian) Lei, Sydney Qing Shu, Wayne Thomas

Faculty Publications

Survey evidence and academic research raise the possibility that audit regulation can impact not only the information contained in external financial reports but also the internal information used by management. We investigate this possibility by examining the improvement in management forecast accuracy around initiation of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board's (PCAOB) international inspection program. Consistent with managers having improved information, we find that managers issue more accurate forecasts following PCAOB inspection access. Multiple additional analyses support that an improved information environment is the mechanism underlying our results, and this effect is distinct from, and incremental to, any effects of …

Auditing With Data And Analytics: External Reviewers’ Judgments Of Audit Quality And Effort, Scott A. Emett, Steven E. Kaplan, Elaine G. Mauldin, Jeffrey Pickerd Jan 2023

Auditing With Data And Analytics: External Reviewers’ Judgments Of Audit Quality And Effort, Scott A. Emett, Steven E. Kaplan, Elaine G. Mauldin, Jeffrey Pickerd

Faculty Publications

Audit firms hesitate to take full advantage of data and analytics (D&A) audit approaches because they lack certainty about how external reviewers evaluate those approaches. We propose that external reviewers use an effort heuristic when evaluating audit quality, judging less effortful audit procedures as lower quality, which could shape how external reviewers evaluate D&A audit procedures. We conduct two experiments in which experienced external reviewers evaluate one set of audit procedures (D&A or traditional) within an engagement review, while holding constant the procedures’ level of assurance. Our first experiment provides evidence that external reviewers rely on an effort heuristic when …

Ethnic Minority Analysts’ Participation In Public Earnings Conference Calls, Rachel W. Flam, Jeremiah Green, Joshua A. Lee, Nathan Y. Sharp Jan 2023

Ethnic Minority Analysts’ Participation In Public Earnings Conference Calls, Rachel W. Flam, Jeremiah Green, Joshua A. Lee, Nathan Y. Sharp

Faculty Publications

We investigate ethnic minority and non-minority sell-side analysts’ participation in public earnings conference calls. We find that minority analysts are underrepresented in conference call Q&A sessions, and minority analysts who do participate on the calls experience lower levels of prioritization than do nonminority analysts. Minority analysts’ lower participation rates are partially but not fully mediated by characteristics such as experience, work environment, and stock rating favorability. Additionally, firm and conference call fixed effects mediate approximately half the magnitude of lower minority participation rates. Extroverted minority analysts participate at higher rates, but the negative association between minority status and conference call …

Managers’ Use Of Humor On Public Earnings Conference Calls, Andrew C. Call, Rachel W> Flam, Joshua A. Lee, Nathan Y. Sharp Jan 2023

Managers’ Use Of Humor On Public Earnings Conference Calls, Andrew C. Call, Rachel W> Flam, Joshua A. Lee, Nathan Y. Sharp

Faculty Publications

Despite the prevalence and importance of humor in interpersonal communication, the disclosure literature is silent on the use of humor in the context of corporate communication. Using a sophisticated machine learning algorithm, we identify managers’ successful uses of humor during public earnings conference calls. When managers use humor on an earnings call, stock market returns and analyst forecast revisions following the call are more positive, primarily because of a muted response to negative earnings news. Consistent with managers’ successful use of humor being a favorable signal of future firm performance, we find no evidence of a return reversal over the …

The Spillover Effect Of Sec Comment Letters Through Audit Firms, Kenneth L. Bills, Ryan Cating, Chenxi Lin, Timothy Seidel Jan 2023

The Spillover Effect Of Sec Comment Letters Through Audit Firms, Kenneth L. Bills, Ryan Cating, Chenxi Lin, Timothy Seidel

Faculty Publications

This study examines whether auditors serve as a conduit for disseminating Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) views on reporting and disclosure matters as the result of being privy to clients’ SEC comment letters. This examination is important because auditors’ involvement in, and private access to, clients’ comment letters can enhance the timeliness of dissemination and have a constraining influence on reporting or disclosure choices that diverge from SEC views. Among clients with a greater expectation of impaired goodwill that do not receive a comment letter with a goodwill-related comment, we find a greater likelihood of goodwill impairment when the audit …

Does Gender And Ethnic Diversity Among Audit Partners Influence Office-Level Audit Personnel Retention And Audit Quality?, Eric R. Condie, Ling Lei Lisic, Timothy Seidel, J. Mike Truelson, Aleksandra "Ally" B. Zimmerman

Faculty Publications

Motivated by prior literature on organizational identification and 23 semistructured interviews with a variety of U.S. audit partners and directors, we examine whether the gender and ethnic diversity of an office’s audit partners influences the retention of the office’s audit professionals and the quality of the audits conducted by the office. Using hand-collected data on U.S. audit partners, we find that greater levels of (or changes in) diversity in office audit partners’ gender and ethnicity are associated with lower (reduced) turnover among office audit professionals and higher (increased) office-level audit quality. To provide further insight into the audit quality results, …

Experimental Study Of A Floating Two-Body Wave Energy Converter, D Li, Sanjay Sharma, Alistair G.L. Borthwick, Heao Huang, Xiaochen Dong, Y Li, Hongda Shi

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

A novel floating two-body wave energy converter (WEC) is tested in regular waves. The WEC consists of a streamlined conical outer buoy that surrounds an elongated inner buoy, with a hydraulic power take-off (PTO) system and an optimized mooring system. Free decay tests quantify the natural frequency characteristics of two-buoy system. A parameter study characterizes the multi-degree-of-freedom coupled motion response of the system dynamics in regular waves. It is found that the two-body system with two resonant frequencies broadens the motion frequency band and possesses stability and survivability attributes that enhance energy capture performance. By quantifying the peak energy, the …

The Effect Of Process Parameters On The Properties Of Elastic Melt Blown Nonwovens: Air Pressure And Dcd, Li Change, Yanfen Zhou, Stephen Jerrams, Jianwei Ma, Shaojuan Chen

Articles

An elastic masterbatch and elastic melt blown nonwovens are prepared based successively on styrene-ethylene/butylene-styrene (SEBS) and polypropylene (PP) blend. The phase separation morphology, rheological properties and crystal structure of the elastic masterbatch are investigated. The results show that a compatible and stable structure is obtained in molten SEBS and PP blend with excellent mobility in the temperature range of 210–230C. The crystallization of PP slows down resulting in a finer structure due to the restriction of the SEBS network structure with rarely change of crystalline structure. The relationship between process parameters and properties of the elastic nonwoven is also studied …

Developing A Maritime Cyber Safety Culture: Improving Safety Of Operations, Rory Hopcraft, Kimberly Tam, Palbar Misas J Dorje, Kemedi Moara-Nkwe, Kevin Jones

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

A rise in catastrophic loss-of-life events as a result of poor safety management (e.g., the capsizing of the Herald of Free Enterprise and the Costa Concordia) has driven the maritime sector to improve its safety management practices. This paper will explore the vital role of the human element within safety management, and why, as part of that safety management, organizations must foster a safety culture. This development must be achieved if organizations are to make a significant step forward in preventing similar catastrophes in the future. It is important to note that the development of safety cultures is not new …

New Code-Based Cryptosystems Via The Ikkr Framework, Terry Shue Chien Lau, Fedor Ivanov, Muhammad Rezal Kamel Ariffin, Ji Jian Chin, Timothy Tzen Vun Yap Jan 2023

New Code-Based Cryptosystems Via The Ikkr Framework, Terry Shue Chien Lau, Fedor Ivanov, Muhammad Rezal Kamel Ariffin, Ji Jian Chin, Timothy Tzen Vun Yap

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

One main construct for code-based public key cryptosystems is the McEliece framework that hedges upon the hardness of decoding arbitrary linear codes. Based on Goppa codes, the original McEliece cryptosystem however, suffers from having very large public keys. To alleviate this problem, we define a new problem that is NP-complete and use this assumption of the intractability of the decisional problem to construct a IND-CCA2-secure code-based public key encryption scheme. We consider generalized Reed–Solomon codes in our public-key cryptosystem and show that it resists Sidelnikov and Shestakov’s key recovery attack. Our generalized Reed–Solomon code encryption scheme achieves optimal public key …

The Microbiomes Of Wildlife And Chemical Pollution: Status, Knowledge Gaps And Challenges, R. D. Handy, N. J. Clark, L. P. Hutt, R. Bescós Jan 2023

The Microbiomes Of Wildlife And Chemical Pollution: Status, Knowledge Gaps And Challenges, R. D. Handy, N. J. Clark, L. P. Hutt, R. Bescós

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

The effect of chemical pollution on the microbiomes of wildlife has been given little attention. A new concept is emerging where microbiomes are vital to host animal or plant health, and for ecosystems. Data are mainly on mammals, birds, and fish. Changing environmental conditions (e.g., salinity, pH, season) and exposure to chemicals alter the composition of gill, gut and skin microbiomes. Gut microbiomes are also modulated by diet, and exposure to chemicals including metals, nanomaterials, fungicides or microplastics. However, a change in the microbiome does not necessarily infer adverse effects on the host, with some evidence of co-adaptation. Environmental risk …

Black-Odorous Water Bodies Annual Dynamics In The Context Of Climate Change Adaptation In Guangzhou City, China, Bing Liu, Haojun Xi, Tianhong Li, Alistair G.L. Borthwick Jan 2023

Black-Odorous Water Bodies Annual Dynamics In The Context Of Climate Change Adaptation In Guangzhou City, China, Bing Liu, Haojun Xi, Tianhong Li, Alistair G.L. Borthwick

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Black-odorous water (BOW) in urban areas has brought detrimental ecological effects and posed a threat to the health of surrounding residents. Identifying BOWs in urban areas is difficult because they are usually small in area, and discontinuous in spatial distribution. The efforts to adapt to climate change in cities have a direct connection to urban environment and may affect the dynamics of BOWs, but their relationship has seldom been addressed in previous research. This research builds a new urban BOW detection model using Gaofen (GF) images and ground-level in-situ water quality data to detect the spatiotemporal dynamics of BOWs in …

A Two-Dimensional Double Layer-Averaged Model Of Hyperconcentrated Turbidity Currents With Non-Newtonian Rheology, Yining Sun, Ji Li, Zhixian Cao, Alistair George Liam Borthwick

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Hyperconcentrated turbidity currents typically display non-Newtonian characteristics that influence sediment transport and morphological evolution in alluvial rivers. However, hydro-sediment-morphological processes involving hyperconcentrated turbidity currents are poorly understood, with little known about the effect of the non-Newtonian rheology. The current paper extends a recent two-dimensional double layer-averaged model to incorporate non-Newtonian constitutive relations. The extended model is benchmarked against experimental and numerical data for cases including subaerial mud flow, subaqueous debris flow, and reservoir turbidity currents. The computational results agree well with observations for the subaerial mud flow and independent numerical simulations of subaqueous debris flow. Differences between the non-Newtonian and …

Medical Diagnostic Value Of Digital Pcr (Dpcr): A Systematic Review, Sophia Nazir Jan 2023

Medical Diagnostic Value Of Digital Pcr (Dpcr): A Systematic Review, Sophia Nazir

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Digital polymerase chain reaction (dPCR) is an emerging technique for the absolute quantification of target nucleic acids. dPCR got attention as a precise quantification tool in preclinical research, particularly when used to detect genetic mutations and result in highly precise measurements. In dPCR, the statistic of Poisson distribution was followed for the random distribution of molecules in different partitions, which is essential for dPCR quantification. Amplified target sequences in different partitions are identified by fluorescence and each partition functions as a separate PCR microreactor. Without the need for calibration, the percentage of PCR-positive partitions is sufficient to estimate the concentration …

River Water Quality In Agricultural Areas • R (Sahota) V Herefordshire Council And Another [2022] Ewca Civ 1640, B Coupland, J Sellick, J Lowther

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

Introduction. The issue at the heart of this judicial review relates to the maintenance of water quality in agricultural areas and where there is documented stress placed on river systems though nutrient run-off. Often this is caused through manure spreading and/or the use of chemical fertilisers. The case concerned a proposal for relatively small agricultural development, the consequences of which would be additional manure generation and land spread in the River Wye catchment. The river is noted as under pressure from such inputs and a challenge was brought against a decision of the respondent local authority to permit the proposed …

Failures In Regulating Discharges Of Untreated Sewage Into Rivers • R (Wild Justice) V Water Services Regulation Authority [2023] Ewca Civ 28, N Zubowicz, J Lowther, J Sellick

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

Introduction. The appeal against the decision not to permit a judicial review was at its heart concerned with a challenge to the respondent Office for the Water Regulator (Ofwat) for its alleged shortcomings in regulating sewage discharges. The appellant (WJ) is a not-for-profit company, which advocates to promote better conservation of wildlife in the UK, to encourage greater public participation in issues related to nature conservation, and to provide a means to forward the interests of wildlife in UK law, policy and practice via the legal system. Of late there has been significant controversy around the way in which discharges …

Voyage Data Recorders (VDR) or 'black boxes' for ships hold critical navigational and sensor data that can be used as evidence in an investigation. These systems have proven extremely useful in determining the cause of several previous shipping accidents. Considering the importance of the VDR and the increasing number of cyber-attacks in the maritime sector, the likelihood of it being attacked is high. This paper examines the security and accessibility of VDR data through a malicious USB device. A USB device is used after a series of tests, detailed in this paper, found it to be a viable way to …

The Rural Enterprise Crime Complex: ‘Undefendable Rural Space’ And The Threat From The Fortress Farm, Orlando Goodall Jan 2023

The Rural Enterprise Crime Complex: ‘Undefendable Rural Space’ And The Threat From The Fortress Farm, Orlando Goodall

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

In response to the concept of the ‘fortress farm’ and its appropriation of traditional defensible space theory, this article introduces the conditions of undefendable rural space and the rural enterprise crime complex. Perspectives that invert traditional theory to determine contexts conducive to the incidence of rural enterprise crime. Empirical data from extensive fieldwork on crimes against wild animals in rural England is used to argue that the fortress and undefendable rural space can in effect serve to ‘design-out’ crime control and lock crime in. A dichotomous outcome, which creates a fortress for relatively powerful human insiders and a rural enterprise …

Instability Of Waves In Deep Water — A Discrete Hamiltonian Approach, David Andrade, Raphael Stuhlmeier Jan 2023

Instability Of Waves In Deep Water — A Discrete Hamiltonian Approach, David Andrade, Raphael Stuhlmeier

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

The stability of waves in deep water has classically been approached via linear stability analysis, with various model equations, such as the nonlinear Schrödinger equation, serving as points of departure. Some of the most well-studied instabilities involve the interaction of four waves – so called Type I instabilities – or five waves – Type II instabilities. A unified description of four and five wave interaction can be provided by the reduced Hamiltonian derived by Krasitskii (1994). Exploiting additional conservation laws, the discretised Hamiltonian may be used to shed light on these four and five wave instabilities without restrictions on spectral …
