Rapidity-Only Tmd Factorization At One Loop, Ian Balitsky Jan 2023

Rapidity-Only Tmd Factorization At One Loop, Ian Balitsky

Physics Faculty Publications

Typically, a production of a particle with a small transverse momentum in hadron-hadron collisions is described by CSS-based TMD factorization at moderate Bjorken xB ~ 1 and by kT-factorization at small xB. A uniform description valid for all xB is provided by rapidity-only TMD factorization developed in a series of recent papers at the tree level. In this paper the rapidity-only TMD factorization for particle production by gluon fusion is extended to the one-loop level.

Two-Point Correlator Of Twist-2 Light-Ray Operators In N=Sym In Bfkl Approximation, Ian Balitsky, Vladimir Kazakov, Evgeny Sobko

Physics Faculty Publications

We generalize local operators of the leading twist-2 of đ’© = SYM theory to the case of complex Lorentz spin j using principal series representation of sl(2, R). We give the direct computation of correlation function of two such non-local operators in the BFKL regime when j → 1. The correlator appears to have the expected conformal coordinate dependence governed by the anomalous dimension of twist-2 operator in NLO BFKL approximation predicted by Kotikov and Lipatov.

Surface Properties And Rf Performance Of Vapor Diffused Nb₃Sn On Nb After Sequential Anneals Below 1000 °C, Jayendrika K. Tiskumara, Jean R. Delayen, U. Pudasaini, G. Eremeev Jan 2023

Surface Properties And Rf Performance Of Vapor Diffused Nb₃Sn On Nb After Sequential Anneals Below 1000 °C, Jayendrika K. Tiskumara, Jean R. Delayen, U. Pudasaini, G. Eremeev

Physics Faculty Publications

Nb₃Sn is a next-generation superconducting material that can be used for future superconducting radiofrequency (SRF) accelerator cavities, promising better performance, cost reduction, and higher operating temperature than Nb. The Sn vapor diffusion method is currently the most preferred and successful technique to coat niobium cavities with Nb₃Sn. Among post-coating treatments to optimize the coating quality, higher temperature annealing without Sn is known to degrade Nb₃Sn because of Sn loss. We have investigated Nb₃Sn/Nb samples briefly annealed at 800-1000 °C, for 10 and 20 minutes to potentially improve the surface to enhance the performance of Nb₃Sn-coated cavities. Following the sample studies,

Recent advancement in superconducting radio frequency cavity processing techniques, with diffusion of impurities within the RF penetration depth, resulted in high quality factor with increase in quality factor with increasing accelerating gradient. The increase in quality factor is the result of a decrease in the surface resistance as a result of nonmagnetic impurities doping and change in electronic density of states. The fundamental understanding of the dependence of surface resistance on frequency and surface preparation is still an active area of research. Here, we present the result of RF measurements of the TEM modes in a coaxial half-wave niobium cavity

For the 14 mrad crossing angle proposed, crab cavity systems are fundamentally anticipated for the viable operation of the International Linear Collider (ILC), in order to maximise its luminosity performance. Since 2021, a specialist development team have been defining optimum crab cavity technologies which can fulfil the operational requirements for ILC, both for its baseline centre-of-mass energy of 250 GeV, but also extending those requirements out to higher beam collision intensities. Five design teams have established crab cavity technology solutions, which have the capability to also operate up to 1 TeV centre-of-mass. This presentation showcases the key performance capabilities of

C3 is an opportunity to realize an e+e- collider for the study of the Higgs boson at √s = 250 GeV, with a well defined upgrade path to 550 GeV while staying on the same short facility footprint [2,3]. C3 is based on a fundamentally new approach to normal conducting linear accelerators that achieves both high gradient and high efficiency at relatively low cost. Given the advanced state of linear collider designs, the key system that requires technical maturation for C3 is the main linac. This paper presents the staged approach towards a

Liouvillian Dynamics Of The Open Schwinger Model: String Breaking And Kinetic Dissipation In A Thermal Medium, Kyle Lee, James Mulligan, Felix Ringer, Xiaojun Yao

Physics Faculty Publications

Understanding the dynamics of bound state formation is one of the fundamental questions in confining quantum field theories such as Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). One hadronization mechanism that has garnered significant attention is the breaking of a string initially connecting a fermion and an antifermion. Deepening our understanding of real-time string-breaking dynamics with simpler, lower dimensional models like the Schwinger model can improve our understanding of the hadronization process in QCD and other confining systems found in condensed matter and statistical systems. In this paper, we consider the string-breaking dynamics within the Schwinger model and investigate its modification inside a thermal

Nor is the new public nuisance a “second best” solution to widespread social problems. These actions rest on joint ventures between prosecutors and personal-injury lawyers that are likely to generate over- and under-deterrence and risk runaway liability.

A modular reinforced bone scaffold with enhanced mechanical properties has recently been developed by our group. It includes: 1) A load-bearing module: a skeleton which is made of a slowly degradable material, undertaking mechanical necessities of the scaffold, and 2) A bio-reactive module: a porous and biodegradable component undertaking biological necessities of the scaffold. The load-bearing module is placed into the bio-reactive module to reinforce it. This paper is dedicated to optimizing the load-bearing module for a certain customized alveolar bone defect. More specifically, a 3D-printed skeleton, made of polycaprolactone (PCL), is optimized based on the boundary conditions of the

The Major Questions Doctrine: Right Diagnosis, Wrong Remedy, Thomas W. Merrill

The Supreme Court’s “major questions” doctrine has been attacked as an attempt to revive the nondelegation doctrine. The better view is that this statutory interpretation responds to perceived failings of the Chevron doctrine, which has governed court-agency relations since 1984. This article criticizes the major question doctrine and proposes modifications to the Chevron doctrine that would partially correct its failings while preserving the traditional interpretive role of courts.

We propose to use the High Momentum Spectrometer of Hall C combined with Neutral Particle Spectrometer (NPS) to perform high precision measurement of the deeply virtual compton scattering (DVCS) cross section using a beam of positrons. The combination of measurements with oppositely charged incident beams is the only unambiguous way to disentange the contribution of the DVCSÂČ term in the photon electroproduction cross section from its interference with the Bethe-Heitler amplitude. This provies a stronger way to constrain the Generalized Parton Distributions of the nucleon. A range of kinematics accessible with an 11 GeV beam off an unpolarized proton target

Event-Driven Suits And The Rethinking Of Securities Litigation, Merritt B. Fox, Joshua Mitts Jan 2023

Event-Driven Suits And The Rethinking Of Securities Litigation, Merritt B. Fox, Joshua Mitts

Faculty Scholarship

Event-driven securities suits-ones that arise after an issuer has experienced some kind of disaster-have become increasingly prevalent in recent years. These suits are based on the fraud-on-the-market doctrine, a doctrine that ultimately gives rise to the bulk of the damages paid out in settlements and judgments pursuant to private litigation under the U.S. securities laws. The theory behind fraud-on-the-market cases is that when an issuer's share price has been inflated by a Rule-10b-5-violating misstatement, investors who purchased shares at the inflated price have suffered a compensable injury if they still hold the shares after the inflation is gone. Although these

In recent years, securities lending — making shares available for borrowing by short sellers who “sell first and buy later” — has been an object of increasing regulatory attention. Securities lending is linked to the growth of passive investing because large, buy-and-hold passive investors are among the largest lenders of portfolio securities. But relatively little is understood about the relationship between securities lending and passive investing. In this Article, I show how securities lending allows passive investors to generate revenue from a decline in the value of their investment portfolios in addition to borrowing fees determined by demand from the

Reducing The Variability And Cost Of Determining The Coefficient Of Friction Of Various Lubricants, James M. Wirth

Honors Theses and Capstones

The Navy requires accurate fastener preloading for many of its fastened applications to protect the safety of the vessel and its personnel, and to ensure proper operation of various components. The preload is based on many properties including fastener materials, fastener geometries, and the coefficient of friction (COF) between mating surfaces. The COF is a critical value in determining the torque-load relationship of a fastener, and is dependent on the contact surface area and the materials in contact, the condition and finish of the contact surfaces, and any lubricant applied in these contact areas. Due to the large amount of

Amid the ongoing pandemic, as overburdened and underfunded health systems are requiring health care social workers (HSWs) to assume responsibilities beyond their scope of practice, institutional constraints have undoubtedly heightened encounters of moral distress (MD). MD is the psychological disequilibrium that arises when institutional factors obligate an individual to carry out a task that violates their professional and/or personal ethics. Our qualitative study investigated HSWs’ (n = 43) MD in Texas during the 2019 COVID-19 pandemic. Findings from our study indicate that MD occurs across five levels: (i) patient care decisions; (ii) personal care decisions; (iii) team/unit decisions; (iv)

Enhancing Neuromorphic Computing With Advanced Spiking Neural Network Architectures, Paolo Gabriel Alejandro Cachi Delgado

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation proposes ways to address current limitations of neuromorphic computing to create energy-efficient and adaptable systems for AI applications. It does so by designing novel spiking neural networks architectures that improve their performance. Specifically, the two proposed architectures address the issues of training complexity, hyperparameter selection, computational flexibility, and scarcity of neuromorphic training data. The first architecture uses auxiliary learning to improve training performance and data usage, while the second architecture leverages neuromodulation capability of spiking neurons to improve multitasking classification performance. The proposed architectures are tested on Intel's Loihi2 neuromorphic chip using several neuromorphic datasets, such as NMIST,

Activity Levels Of Different Cell Types In An Epileptogenic Model Of Cortical Microgyria: A Cfos Investigation, Peter F. Lamothe

Theses and Dissertations

A large percentage of individuals with intractable epilepsies have an accompanying cortical malformation, the underlying cellular mechanisms of which are not fully understood. In an animal model for one such malformation, polymicrogyria, epileptogenesis occurs most easily in a region of tissue just adjacent to the microgyria termed the paramicrogyral region (PMR). Previous studies implicate somatostatin containing interneurons (SOM) as a potential contributor to this pathology, and show increased excitation of SOM in the PMR. We hypothesis that SOM are more active in the PMR when compared to SOM within the homologous region of the control cortex. In addition to this

Nannies And Public Space: Reproductive Labor In Richmond, Va, Hannah D. Woehrle

Theses and Dissertations

In the realm of urban planning, the gendered and spatial dynamics of childcare as a field of labor have been historically overlooked. This thesis addresses this gap by examining the geographies shaped by nannies in Richmond, VA, and their implications for urban planning in the context of the evolving neoliberal "new" economy. Existing research focuses on the geographies of children and burgeoning sectors of gig work in the neoliberal city. This study positions itself at the intersection of these areas, focusing on nannies as long standing gig workers within the childcare network, uniquely positioned to be affected by economic transitions.

Evolution Of The Diets Of Australian Possums (Marsupialia: Phalangeriformes) From The Etadunna Formation In The Lake Eyre Basin, South Australia, Theodore C. Wheat

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

The Lake Eyre Basin in South Australia holds Australia’s oldest known fossil marsupials representing both extant and extinct families in the Etadunna Formation, a formation that spans nearly two million years from 23.3 to 25 MA. During that two-million-year period, the terrestrial herbivorous marsupials present in the area underwent a dramatic transition both taxonomically and dentally, likely brought on by a changing environment caused by a warming climate. However, it is unknown whether a similar change occurred to the marsupials like possums that live up in the canopy. Understanding this could help determine how extensively this change in the environment
