BACKGROUND: Many individuals undergoing cancer treatment experience substantial financial hardship, often referred to as financial toxicity (FT). Those undergoing prostate cancer treatment may experience FT and its impact can exacerbate disparate health outcomes. Localized prostate cancer treatment options include: radiation, surgery, and/or active surveillance. Quality of life tradeoffs and costs differ between treatment options. In this project, our aim was to quantify direct healthcare costs to support patients and clinicians as they discuss prostate cancer treatment options. We provide the transparent steps to estimate healthcare costs associated with treatment for localized prostate cancer among the privately insured population using a …

2020-Current year OA Pubs

INTRODUCTION: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a harmful, life-threatening illness. Patients with severe AN often receive acute treatment but, upon discharge, experience high relapse rates. Evidence-based, outpatient treatment following acute care is critical to preventing relapse; however, numerous barriers (e.g., location, financial limitations, low availability of providers) preclude individuals from accessing treatment. mHealth technologies may help to address these barriers, but research on such digital approaches for those with AN is limited. Further, such technologies should be developed with all relevant stakeholder input considered from the outset. As such, the present study aimed to garner feedback from eating disorder (ED) treatment …

Waterbodies Thermal Energy Based Systems Interactions With Marine Environment — A Review, Amir Bordbar, Konstantinos Georgoulas, Yong Ming Dai, Simone Michele, Frank Roberts, Nigel Carter, Yeaw Chu Lee

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Waterbodies’ thermal energy potential, as a green, renewable, and limitless source of energy, can be exploited in response to the growing energy demands of islands and coastal cities. Up to now, the technologies that have been developed for this purpose include seawater air-conditioning, surface water heat pump, and ocean energy thermal conversion systems or their combinations, which are presented here as Waterbodies Thermal Energy Based Systems (WTEBSs). The growth and development of these technologies raise concerns regarding their potential impacts on sustainability of the marine environment. The present work provides a comprehensive review of the available literature and state-of-the-art technologies …

Development Of A Goal Setting And Goal Management System: Intervention Mapping, Eunyoung Kang, Erin R Foster Jan 2023

Development Of A Goal Setting And Goal Management System: Intervention Mapping, Eunyoung Kang, Erin R Foster

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND: Although goal setting and goal management (GSGM) is a key component of chronic disease management and rehabilitation practice, there is currently no widely used evidence-based intervention system available. This paper describes the theoretical underpinnings and development of a new intervention called MyGoals. MyGoals is designed to guide occupational therapy (OT) practitioners to implement theory-based, client-engaged GSGM for adults with chronic conditions in community-based OT rehabilitation settings.

METHODS: We first developed a planning team with two adults with chronic conditions, two clinicians, and two researchers. As a collaborative team, we co-developed MyGoals by following Intervention Mapping (IM) steps 1-4 and …

Situating Implementation Science (Is) In Res(Is)Tance: A Conceptual Frame Toward The Integration Of Scholarship From The Black Radical Tradition, Cory D Bradley, Whitney C Irie, Elvin H Geng

2020-Current year OA Pubs

This manuscript undertakes a disciplinary self-critique of the field of implementation science, a field which attempts to bridge the gap between evidence-based interventions and their practical application. Despite the heightened emphasis on health equity and racial disparities, the field's current discourse is limited by key epistemic shortcomings. First, even though prevalence of implementation gaps between racialized groups in the United States necessitates a comprehensive understanding of the systems perpetuating these disparities, the field does not operate with a general explanation for disparities not as a failure of systems, but a system historically and structural designed to produce disparities. Second, the …

Objective Large-scale, multisite hospital improvement initiatives can advance high-quality care for patients. Implementation support is key to adoption of change in this context. Strategies that foster collaboration within local teams, across sites and between initiative developers and users are important. However not all implementation strategies are successful in all settings, sometimes realising poor or unintended outcomes. Our objective here is to develop guiding principles for effective collaborative implementation strategies for multi-site hospital initiatives. Design Mixed-method realist evaluation. Realist studies aim to examine the underlying theories that explain differing outcomes, identifying mechanisms and contextual factors that may trigger them. Setting We …

Jones, Sarah Langford, Jessica Michel Dearte, John Schofield, Martin Thiel, Kayleigh J. Wyles

School of Psychology

As human behaviors play a crucial role in addressing the global threat of plastic pollution, it is vital to understand perceptions about marine plastic litter (MPL) and to develop interventions encouraging pro-environmental behaviors (PEBs). This study evaluates story writing as a window to explore perceptions and as an engagement activity to boost PEBs. During the COVID-19 lockdowns, schoolchildren from the East Pacific coast participated in this activity, each creating a story and answering a pre-post survey. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of 81 stories and 79 surveys show awareness of sources and impacts. Participants identified land and local pollution as significant …

When Reputation Is At Stake: Honour, Masculinity And Militarism In The Courts Martial Records Of The Marine Corps, 1755 – 1779, Lee-Jane Giles Jan 2023

When Reputation Is At Stake: Honour, Masculinity And Militarism In The Courts Martial Records Of The Marine Corps, 1755 – 1779, Lee-Jane Giles

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses

This dissertation examines how the Marine Corps, as a newly formed permanent force, understood and embodied key social ideals such as honour and trustworthiness, respect and deference alongside martial behaviours. It uncovers and analyses the self-sanctioning nature of the marines’ officer corps to impose conforming behaviours during this key period in the Marine Corps’ development. However, this dissertation is equally interested in the non-commissioned and enlisted ranks, and their responses to the imposed conformity to these values. These early cases, linked to ideal behaviour, show a form of self-fashioning as the men of the Corps sought to form their identity …

George Morland (1763-1804) And The Representation Of Social Types, Heather Yeomans Jan 2023

George Morland (1763-1804) And The Representation Of Social Types, Heather Yeomans

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses

George Morland was an eighteenth century artist, who was very popular not only during his lifetime, but in the following hundred years as well. He then fell out of popularity after changes in fashion and trends following the First World War. His paintings contain scenes of rural communities, families, animals, travellers, seaside communities as well as the slave trade, they cover a wide range of eighteenth century social types. Morland lived a ‘bohemian’ lifestyle which allowed him to get to know the people he depicted, living within the communities. His paintings have been analysed in detail in only a few …

The following thesis will present the current state of South-West rural representation in contemporary theatre and explore who has the right to tell rural communities stories. Using rural proofing as a base framework will present a new framework for theatre makers to inform and influence their creative representations of South-West rural life. To understand the current state of representation and create the framework to improve this, I will be using formalist, actantial and script analysis of select plays, practitioners and theatre companies representing rural life in their work. Equally, my work as a theatre maker will be analysed as I …

Assessing National Progress Of Mediterranean Countries In Shark Governance In The Context Of International Legal Obligations, Lydia Koehler Jan 2023

Assessing National Progress Of Mediterranean Countries In Shark Governance In The Context Of International Legal Obligations, Lydia Koehler

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses

The work presented in this thesis introduces a conceptual framework for shark policy making against which national progress of Mediterranean coastal States in shark governance was assessed. A detailed assessment strategy was developed based on three distinct constructs, namely political commitment, research, and implementation effort. Based on multiple data sources (national reports under relevant conventions; policy documents; national legislation; online databases; scientific literature; and survey questionnaires to relevant government bodies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and national experts, designed as part of this assessment), individual differences between countries were determined and evaluated within the context of legal requirements under international and regional …

Speculations On Force And Form: Resisting The Neurotypical In The Neoliberal University, Helen Bowstead Jan 2023

Speculations On Force And Form: Resisting The Neurotypical In The Neoliberal University, Helen Bowstead

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses

Can reframing a thesis in terms of what it can do rather than what it is generate a joyful-artful engagement with the PhD process and engender a more response-able relationship with the world? In this tentative exemplification of the speculative potential of force and form, the very act of writing emerges as a powerful antidote to constraints of the neoliberal university. Exploring writing as immanent doing, Erin Manning’s philosophical projects of research-creation, artfulness and thought in motion find expression through the ordinary, the everyday and the mundane. By refusing to engage in the dis-abling constraints prescribed by institutional expectations of …

My Auschwitz State Of Mind: A Study Of The Nature Of Emergence Of A Text In Relation To Auschwitz, Ivan Alexander Pope

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses

This thesis uses practice-based research to ask how I can write a textual deep map from an investigation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. As a key part of the research, I made repeated visits to the environs of Auschwitz-Birkenau, walking and cycling extensively around the area in a search for contemporary fragments in the landscape, for example buildings, routes, sites, landmarks, place names, signposts and found objects. I used my own collection of guides, documents, textual, cartographic and photographic fragments and other ephemera related to the town and the Auschwitz museum in addition to support from the Auschwitz Museum itself and external archives …

State Medical Boards (SMBs) can take severe disciplinary actions (e.g., license revocation or suspension) against physicians who commit egregious wrongdoing in order to protect the public. However, there is noteworthy variability in the extent to which SMBs impose severe disciplinary action. In this manuscript, we present and synthesize a subset of 11 recommendations based on findings from our team's larger consensus-building project that identified a list of 56 policies and legal provisions SMBs can use to better protect patients from egregious wrongdoing by physicians.

Alterity In Central And Eastern European Illustrations For The Lord Of The Rings 1981-1993, Joel Merriner Jan 2023

Alterity In Central And Eastern European Illustrations For The Lord Of The Rings 1981-1993, Joel Merriner

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses

The 2001-2003 cinematic release of Peter Jackson’s movie adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings heralded a period of widespread pictorial homogenisation in Tolkien visual culture. Propelled by the conceptual design of veteran “Western” Tolkien artists Alan Lee and John Howe, Jackson’s vision of Middle-earth became the hegemonic model by which other depictions are measured. Consequently, the potential for undertaking a scholarly examination of an alternative, specifically non-Western Tolkien vision (with all the implications for visual difference and/or commonality this might involve), has been largely ignored. This dissertation, however, seeks to foster a deeper understanding of the possibility …

Post-Covid Syndrome And Adults With Intellectual Disability: Another Vulnerable Population Forgotten?, R Shankar, B Perera, A Roy, Et Al

Peninsula Medical School

An area of interest presently is the lingering symptoms after COVID-19, i.e. post-COVID-19 syndrome (PCS). Specifics of diagnosis and management of PCS are emerging. However, vulnerable populations such as those with intellectual disabilities, who were disproportionately affected by the pandemic, risk being ‘left behind’ from these considerations.

Spatial And Seasonal Variations In Dissolved Methane Across A Large Lake, Mike Peacock, Scott J. Davidson, Dolly N. Kothawala, Joel Segersten, Martyn N. Futter Jan 2023

Spatial And Seasonal Variations In Dissolved Methane Across A Large Lake, Mike Peacock, Scott J. Davidson, Dolly N. Kothawala, Joel Segersten, Martyn N. Futter

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Lakes process large volumes of organic carbon (OC), are important sources of methane (CH4), and contribute to climatic warming. However, there is a lack of data from large lakes >500 km2, which creates uncertainty in global budgets. In this data article, we present dissolved CH4, OC bioreactivity measurements, water chemistry, and algal biovolumes at 11 stations across Lake Mälaren, the third largest (1,074 km2) Swedish lake. Total phosphorus concentrations show that during the study period the lake was classed as mesotrophic/eutrophic. Overall mean CH4 concentration from all stations, sampled five times to cover seasonal variation, was 2.51 μg l−1 (0.98–5.39 …

Defining Solute Carrier Transporter Signatures Of Murine Immune Cell Subsets, Tania Løve Aaes, Javier Burgoa Cardás, Kodi S Ravichandran Jan 2023

Defining Solute Carrier Transporter Signatures Of Murine Immune Cell Subsets, Tania Løve Aaes, Javier Burgoa Cardás, Kodi S Ravichandran

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Solute carrier (SLC) transporters are membrane-bound proteins that facilitate nutrient transport, and the movement across cellular membranes of various substrates ranging from ions to amino acids, metabolites and drugs. Recently, SLCs have gained increased attention due to their functional linkage to innate immunological processes such as the clearance of dead cells and anti-microbial defense. Further, the druggable nature of these transporters provides unique opportunities for improving outcomes in different immunological diseases. Although the SLCs represent the largest group of transporters and are often identified as significant hits in omics data sets, their role in immunology has been insufficiently explored. This …

The Microbiomes Of Wildlife And Chemical Pollution: Status, Knowledge Gaps And Challenges, R. D. Handy, N. J. Clark, L. P. Hutt, R. Bescós

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

The effect of chemical pollution on the microbiomes of wildlife has been given little attention. A new concept is emerging where microbiomes are vital to host animal or plant health, and for ecosystems. Data are mainly on mammals, birds, and fish. Changing environmental conditions (e.g., salinity, pH, season) and exposure to chemicals alter the composition of gill, gut and skin microbiomes. Gut microbiomes are also modulated by diet, and exposure to chemicals including metals, nanomaterials, fungicides or microplastics. However, a change in the microbiome does not necessarily infer adverse effects on the host, with some evidence of co-adaptation. Environmental risk …
