Decreasing Surgical Complications In Diabetic Patients, Bandana Mahato
Decreasing Surgical Complications In Diabetic Patients, Bandana Mahato
DNP Qualifying Manuscripts
Executive Summary
Objective: This manuscript aims to determine if controlling diabetes prior to undergoing low back surgery could decrease complications and disability.
Contexts: Despite the overwhelming information on the complications of uncontrolled diabetes, patients continue to have elevated HgA1C before having surgery. Furthermore, there is a plethora of data showing uncontrolled diabetic patients will have higher complications after surgery, yet patients continue to have elective surgery despite having unchecked diabetes. There are no clear guidelines for primary care providers or surgeons on when they should allow patients to have elective surgery. Therefore, it is vital that HgA1c needs to be …

The Role Of Social And Personal Competencies In Quality Teacher Instruction, Jane Blair Laoo
The Role Of Social And Personal Competencies In Quality Teacher Instruction, Jane Blair Laoo
Ed.D. Dissertations
Despite the appropriate and high level of concern about providing high-quality core instructional practices and educating the whole child, teacher stress and inability to understand and manage emotions stood in the way of making progress. Teaching is a highly stressful profession. Researchers highlighted the need for interventions to enhance teacher abilities and promote student success, particularly in understanding social and personal competencies. The purpose of my qualitative, interpretive study was to explore elementary school teachers’ perceptions of social and personal competencies in public K-12 rural Tennessee schools to determine how schools supported teacher social and personal competencies as a way …
Predictive Looking And Predictive Looking Errors In Everyday Activities, Sophie Su
Predictive Looking And Predictive Looking Errors In Everyday Activities, Sophie Su
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
People spontaneously segment continuous streams of experiences into distinct episodes. Prediction errors are theorized to drive segmentation. However, existing studies exploring the relationship between prediction error and event segmentation lack a continuous measure of prediction error during naturalistic perception and often fail to distinguish between prediction error and prediction uncertainty. Do moment-by-moment fluctuation of prediction errors, not prediction uncertainty during naturalistic event perception correlate positively with segmentation probabilities? To tackle this question, we harnessed the predictive nature of eye movements and introduced a predictive looking model. In this model, individuals’ prior gaze patterns act as predictors for critical features in …

Women In Leadership: How Far Have We Come And Where Do We Go?, Alexandra Hill
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Corporate leadership has evolved throughout the decades due to societal and organizational changes. With a shift towards a more equitable workplace, women have taken on higher executive roles. While there has been progress, women are still outnumbered in leadership positions. Where do we go from here? What can organizations and society do to advance the idea of leadership as a gender-neutral concept? This paper researches the evolution of leadership theory, the gender differences in women’s leadership styles, and the challenges women encounter in their positions of power. Through analysis of the internal and external barriers facing women’s advancement into and …

Much of modern science takes place in a computational environment, and, increasingly, that environment is programmed using R, Python, or Julia. Furthermore, most scientific data now live on the cloud, so the first step in many workflows is to query a cloud database and load the response into a computational environment for further analysis. Thus, tools that facilitate programmatic data retrieval represent a critical component in reproducible scientific workflows. Earth science is no different in this regard. To fulfill that basic need, we developed R, Python, and Julia packages providing programmatic access to the U.S. Geological Survey’s National Water Information …

SARS-CoV-2 infection-induced aggravation of host innate immune response not only causes tissue damage and multiorgan failure in COVID-19 patients but also induces host genome damage and activates DNA damage response pathways. To test whether the compromised DNA repair capacity of individuals modulates the severity of COVID-19 infection, we analyze DNA repair gene expression in publicly available patient datasets and observe a lower level of the DNA glycosylase NEIL2 in the lungs of severely infected COVID-19 patients. This observation of lower NEIL2 levels is further validated in infected patients, hamsters and ACE2 receptor-expressing human A549 (A549-ACE2) cells. Furthermore, delivery of recombinant …

Doctor Of Physical Therapy Students’ Experience With Microaggressions In The Clinic: A Call To Action, Jocelin T. Friedman, Todd E. Davenport
Pacific Journal of Health
As Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students fulfill off-campus clinical experience requirements at healthcare institutions, they are mentored by clinical instructors who are employees of said healthcare institutions. Clinical instructors, patients, or other staff members there may commit microaggressions against physical therapy students with varying subject matters, intentions, and effects on the students. Microaggressions are brief verbal humiliations which may or may not be intentional, but nonetheless convey derogatory slights or insults towards a target group. This article explores DPT students’ real-life experiences with microaggressions within the clinical education realm and the challenges a Director of Clinical Education faced in …

Providing An Eco Mode Feature For Optical Modules, Antonio Carugati
Providing An Eco Mode Feature For Optical Modules, Antonio Carugati
Defensive Publications Series
Techniques are presented herein that leverage the reality that many optical link installations could safely operate even with a reduced transmission optical power level. Aspects of the presented techniques offer a new optical transceiver feature (which may be referred to herein as an 'Eco Mode') in which a module may be set to work with a lower transmission power level. Under such an approach, at least one extra power level is allowed beyond (i.e., in addition to) an existing nominal power level. Through an Eco Mode option, a 100 gigabits per second (G) transceiver that is deployed in a Quad …

Aligning Map Patches To Estimate Lane Marker Geometry, Daniel J. Lingenfelter, Stephen P. Russell, Simon Desai, Jonathan T. Barron, Daniel Sievers
Defensive Publications Series
Accurate lane marker geometry is important for autonomous vehicles to navigate roads safely and efficiently. Map patches provide valuable data for estimating lane marker geometry but need to be aligned before they can be used to estimate the lane marker geometry. Traditional feature-based approaches for aligning map patches are unsuitable for map patches that include only lane markers, which typically lack distinctive features. This disclosure describes techniques for aligning map patches, specifically aligning lane markers on road geometries. Per the technique, correspondence between lane markers is determined, focusing on smooth curves without distinct features. Map patch alignment technique combines sensor …
